Price Drop Alert: Budget-friendly Benco S1 gets even more affordable in Nepal

2

Benco has always targeted the lower-budget phone industry with its smartphones. Their Y and V series featured major features at costs under NPR 15K. Even this time, with the release of the new S series, starting with S1, they have continued this trend. So let’s learn more about the Benco S1, including its specifications, features, official price, and availability in Nepal.

Benco S1 Overview:

Design and Display

Benco S1 features a slim body measuring 8.5mm with rounded corners. The back has a matte finish that gives a premium feel to the mobile phone. Furthermore, it arrives in two color variants, i.e. Emerald Green and Gemstone Black—both of which feature a big glossy camera island.

The modern design continues on the front too. Here, you get a 6.8-inch LCD screen with a punch-hole cutout. Benco claims a 91% screen-to-body ratio thanks to slim bezels and the 20.5:9 aspect ratio. I must say, except for HD+ resolution, the display sounds pretty impressive for an entry-level smartphone.Benco S1 Design

Camera

Another highlight of the Benco S1 is the camera. It uses a 48MP image sensor for the primary rear camera. The sensor uses 4-in-1 pixel binning to churn out 12MP native photos. You can choose between four major shooting modes: AI Pro, Portrait, Capture, and Ultra Clear. One is for macro shots that you can use from within a 3cm distance of the subject. The other is an “AI” camera whose purpose is unclear. Also, this phone introduces a 16 MP selfie camera with AI portrait mode at the front.

Performance

Over on the performance front,  Benco brings Unisoc T606 built on a 12nm processor. It is an octa-core processor with two Cortex-A75 “Performance” (@1.6GHz) and six Cortex-A55 (@1.6GHz) “Efficiency cores. And for the graphics, it comes with ARM Mali-G57 MP1 GPU.

Moreover, the device provides you with 4 GB of physical RAM and 3GB of virtual RAM on top. The S1 can store up to 128 GB of whatever you want to add, and that threshold can be extended via a micro SD card. Benco has used UFS 2.2 storage which performs considerably faster than eMMC, usually found in budget devices.

Rest of the specs

For the remaining, the brand-new Benco S1 packs a 5000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. The connectivity options for the phone include WiFi, Bluetooth, dual 4G SIM slots, and much more. And the fingerprint sensor mounted on the power button is claimed to be unlocked in 0.1s. The phone ships with Android 13 out of the box.

Vivo V30 vs Samsung Galaxy A55

Cameras

Vivo V30 vs Samsung Galaxy A55 Camera

Daylight

So, let’s start with the cameras! And during the day, I found that both these phones can capture great-looking shots. There’s a healthy amount of detail in the photos and things like dynamic range are also well taken care of. But peeking a little closer, I noticed how both Samsung and Vivo have different kinds of optimization.

Samsung favors a more natural output while Vivo tends to brighten the output and lift the exposure, highlights, and shadows to make the pictures look more eye-catching. It’s like V30’s output is already edited!

I know most people prefer brighter-looking images — like the one from the Vivo V30 — but I’m more fond of what the Galaxy A55 captured instead. The way Vivo has lifted the shadow details all over the frame looks a bit too unnatural for my taste. While the same processing works in Vivo’s favor some other time.

Close-ups

Its photos also have punchier contrast and warmer colors compared to the Galaxy A55 even when I’m shooting in the “Natural” mode that’s supposed to look… natural. Although this kind of tuning is great for closeup subjects. If you look at these samples, Vivo’s closeup shots have great colors and focus while 6 out of 10 times, A55’s shots are washed out and out of focus.

So, in the primary camera, it’s really what you prefer, a natural-looking output or a processed image. Both cameras have their pros and cons, but nothing is that distinct to actually label one as better than the other!

Ultrawide

However, the Vivo V30 takes an easy win with its ultrawide shooter. That 50MP sensor captures more details compared to the Galaxy A55’s 12MP camera. And it’s not just about the resolution, A55’s ultra-wide sensor is not as optimized as well.

It has a relatively weaker dynamic range and the color shift from the primary to ultra-wide images is quite noticeable on the A55. Vivo’s output is also not perfect, it does tend to go overboard with the highlights sometimes, but 90% of the time, you will get well-detailed and balanced ultra-wide shots.

Lowlight

And things are pretty much the same in lowlight conditions too. The one thing I’ll tell you right away is that you’re actually better off without switching to the dedicated “Night Mode” option on either of them because the normal photo mode itself does a decent job of capturing the night scene.

Anyway, remember how the V30 preferred darker contrast and warmer colors during the day? Well… it turns out that sorta thing complements the nighttime photos brilliantly.

Again, the A55 has a more natural output with natural detailing, I am gravitating a little towards Vivo, its images are just so striking and well-exposed. There is some hint of over-sharpening in Vivo’s images, but it does not look bad, so I won’t complain!

Portraits

Even in portraits, the Galaxy A55 and the Vivo 30 are wildly different in this aspect! Samsung likes to make the subject’s face just a tad bit pinkish while Vivo’s portraits are more contrasty with a Yellow tone on the subject’s face that looks great.

It is quite difficult to choose actually, but I like the natural processing from Samsung a bit more. Having said that, I really wish the Galaxy A55 had a 2x option for taking portraits like Vivo.

Aura light on Vivo

Likewise, Vivo’s “Aura Light” is also a neat trick to take good-looking portraits at night, but I will admit, I don’t care so much about that.

Selfies

Unlike the portraits, in the selfies, the Vivo V30 has a pinkish tone this time while Samsung favors a yellowish tone, but both phones take great selfies. One advantage Vivo has is there’s an autofocus for selfies, which can come in handy if your hands are shaky.

Videos

Okay, What about videos? So you can shoot at up to 4K 30 fps from the primary, the ultrawide, and the selfie camera on the Galaxy A55, while the V30 can’t do 4K videos from its ultrawide lens yet. Which feels a little weird since that 50MP sensor has plenty of pixels to make room for 4K videos.

Either way, I’m gonna have to go with the Galaxy A55 in terms of videos. The Vivo V30 cranks up that exposure dials yet again — like it did with the photos — while I’m also a bit surprised to see how it struggles a little with stabilization. Its footage is noticeably jerky when walking around with the phone, whereas I’m not seeing any improvement even after switching to 1080 / 30 fps mode in the hopes of steadier recordings.

The only good thing I can think of with the V30’s videos is that the one from its selfie camera has a wider field of view. And its microphone quality isn’t too bad either.

Design and Build

So yeah, based on everything I’ve discussed so far, the Galaxy A55 and the Vivo V30 are pretty evenly matched phones in the battle of the cameras. And apart from that, these two are quite different in a lot of other aspects too.

Like, the design for instance. The Vivo V30 has this nice, curved finish on both sides and it feels absolutely incredible to hold. I would’ve liked to see some form of Gorilla Glass protection at the back and also maybe better ingress protection than IP54, but it’s not a total dealbreaker.

On the contrary, the Galaxy A55 goes the exact opposite way with flat edges all around a more robust IP67 dust/water resistance, and a Gorilla Glass Victus Plus protection for the display.

And you guys already know I’m a big fan of such modern-looking design but here, I’m really not fond of how sharp its edges are. I mean… it just makes holding the phone for long hours so unnecessarily uncomfortable.

Performance and software

And if you’re into mobile gaming, you’ll find that the Galaxy A55 has some catching up to do as well. Although its Exynos 1480 chip stands remarkably toe-to-toe against Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 and the Dimensity 8200 on the Vivo V30 and V30 Pro in different synthetic benchmarks but the Galaxy A55 simply hasn’t been optimized enough to play nice with most popular games.

Funtouch OS vs OneUI

But let me reassure you that you won’t have any trouble with casual, everyday usage with either of them. In fact, the software experience on the Galaxy A55 is positively first-class. For me, Samsung’s One UI is way too far ahead in terms of things like stability, usability, customizability, and all that compared to something like Vivo’s not-so-fun Funtouch OS. Plus, the Galaxy A55 is also a clear winner when it comes to timely updates and longer software support as well.

Display

And you know… there’s just something about the display on a Samsung phone.

Vivo V30 vs Samsung Galaxy A55 Display

The V30’s screen isn’t bad by any means — it’s actually the brighter of the two — although the Galaxy A55 does color consistency, HDR processing, and those things better. Samsung has optimized the 120Hz refresh rate on this thing perfectly as well, while the V30 refuses to hit 120Hz even when setting it to high refresh rate mode for some reason.

Speaker and Haptics

Moreover, I like Samsung’s sharper, stronger haptics more and its stereo speakers are also more fuller and louder versus Vivo V30’s ridiculous single-speaker setup. I really don’t understand why Vivo’s V-series even in 2024 don’t have stereo speakers!

Battery and Charging

As for the battery life, I was getting roughly similar screen time from both of these phones. At around 7 hours on average, which is fantastic.

Vivo V30 vs Samsung Galaxy A55 Charging

But Vivo V30 charges insanely faster here. Exactly twice as fast! Plus, you also get a compatible 80W charger inside the box itself with the V30, whereas the 25W charging speed is just not appealing on a premium midrange phone with Samsung.

Vivo V30 vs Samsung Galaxy A55: Conclusion

Alright, let me wrap things up now. So, if your budget is strictly under Rs. 61,000, with cameras as a priority — then I believe this year’s Vivo V30 is an incredible phone. Its videography aspect isn’t the best for the price and not having a stereo speaker is also a bummer, but overall, it’s a nice package!

Vivo V30 vs Samsung Galaxy A55 Android Version

The Galaxy A55, on the other hand, is also slightly expensive! Almost overpriced considering you can’t enjoy games here and you will also notice it to be slightly slower! But that premium Samsung is asking for you to pay is for No. 1 the brand value, and No. 2 the more refined software experience and the 4 years of updates you are going to get over the years.

Plus, you are also getting a better multimedia experience, nicer haptics, more natural camera images, and a much more robust IP67 rating and Gorilla Glass Victus protection. So, paying that premium for the A55 is not a terrible idea. But, if you play games, I suggest you just stay away from the A55.

Redmi introducing new “Turbo” series: The Ultimate Midrange!

Xiaomi’s sub-brand — Redmi has some of the most iconic smartphone series. This includes the likes of the K-series, the Note series, the numbered series and even the A-series of smartphones. Now, we are getting a separate “Turbo” series from Redmi and we are here to talk about it!

Redmi Turbo Series Overview

The announcement of the new Redmi Turbo series comes after the company outlined their plan for the coming decade. Additionally, the Xiaomi sub-brand also announced its new product matrix. This matrix gives us an idea of Redmi products’ hierarchy as well as the price bracket. Here is how all the Redmi series are lined up for the next 10 years:

Redmi Product Matrix

1. K-Series

Starting with the K-series, it’s the flagbearer of the Redmi brand. The series started as the flagship killer and slowly moved into the flagship space itself. Hence, you can expect K-series phones to include high-end flagship phones with almost no compromise in tech and performance.

2. Turbo Series

The new Redmi Turbo series sits right behind the top-of-the-line K-series. Meaning — this series will have the upper midrange phones that blur the line between flagships and midrange. So basically, the Redmi Turbo series will be filling the vacant space left by the K-series, after it shifted into the flagship space.

3. Note Series

Moving on, the Note series is hands down the most popular series from the brand. It sits under the Redmi Turbo series in the matrix, at a more comfortable midrange space. The entire Redmi Note 13 series — especially the Pro+ variant — was perfectly balanced. So much so, that it’s hard to make a case against them.

Redmi Note 13 Pro Plus Design
Redmi Note 13 Pro+

Redmi Note series will continue on this trajectory and provide well-balanced phones with flagship-inspired features in a midrange price bracket.

4. Number Series

Next up is the Redmi’s titular numbered series. It consists of and will continue to have affordable phones. As per the company, they aim to raise the industry standard for the basic functionality of a smartphone with this series. Thus, we can expect them to continue offering quality features at a pocket-friendly price point.

5. A-Series?

The company skipped mentioning anything about the Redmi A-series in their announcement. This series operates a price tag that the other companies have long ditched and forgotten. So, does this mean Redmi is walking the same road? Or there isn’t anything interesting to share about the series? I guess, we will just have to wait and see.

Redmi A3 Rear Design

On a side note, the latest entry in the series — the Redmi A3 was quite a good package. Why not take some time to read our review of the phone?

First Entry in the series: Redmi Turbo 3?

As it stands, the first entry in the series is set to be the Redmi Turbo 3! Now, a straight jump to the number “3” seems uncalled for on the surface. However, we did get the Turbo 1 and 2. But as the Redmi Note 11T Pro and the Redmi Note 12 Turbo. So, technically we are in fact on the third iteration of the Turbo series. This should also mean that the Redmi Note 13 Turbo will just be the Redmi Turbo 3 instead.

Redmi Turbo 3 Marketing

While on the subject of Redmi Turbo 3, the phone will possibly carry on the exterior of the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ and opt for the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 on the inside. This phone reportedly scored an AnTuTu score of over 1.7 million during the lab test. Therefore, the Redmi Turbo 3 will come with flagship-like performance, while sitting on the budget space.

Redmi Turbo Series: Conclusion

The Redmi Note series was getting convoluted with all the Pro, Pro+, T, and Turbo variants. Therefore, by separating the “Turbo” from the Note series and creating an entirely new series — it clears up a lot of confusion. On top of that, it also opens up wider marketing and sales opportunities for the company. Lastly, as a consumer, it is good to have great products with easier names to remember.

Best Budget Speakers Under NPR 3,000 in Nepal [Updated]

Gone are the days when you required big TVs and expensive sound systems to enjoy your movies and music. These days all you need is your phone and a good-sounding portable speaker. Fortunately, both these industries have come far from the old days. Today, you can get a decent pair of smartphones and Bluetooth speakers on a budget. In this article, we will be focusing on the latter so without further ado here’s the list of best budget portable speakers under NPR 3000 in Nepal.

Best Budget Portable Speakers Under NPR 3000 in Nepal [Updated]

6. X-Age Convo Mono Pod

Starting the list of the best budget portable speakers under NPR 3000 in Nepal is the X-Age Convo Mono Pod. In case you didn’t know, X-Age is a homegrown Nepali brand. Talking of the product itself, the little guy comes in a cylindrical shape with pores at the top.

It is powered by 45mm drivers that deliver 5W of power. Additional features of the ConvE Mono Pod 5W include support for FM radio, TF (microSD)/USB card play, and compatibility with Bluetooth calling, thanks to the built-in microphone. With true wireless stereo (TWS) support, you can pair two speakers for an expansive soundstage that fills any space.

In terms of the audio quality, we found it to be okay for the price. If you are an audio fanatic who knows the basics, you might notice that it’s a bit weak on the vocals and trebles side. It also lacks an IP rating. And the 1200mAh cell provides a battery life of 4 hours. So, this guy becomes suitable for indoor usage apparently.

X-Age ConvE Mono Pod 5W

X-Age ConvE Mono Pod Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 96 x 96  x 32 mm
  • Driver Size: 14mm
  • Range: 10m
  • Bluetooth: v4.2
  • Battery Capacity: 1200 mAh
  • Battery Charging: Full charge in 3-4 hours
  • Ip Rating: N/A
  • Audio: 5W
  • Price in Nepal: Rs. 2,199

5. Purple PBS-001

Next, we have PBS-001. It’s from Purple, which is another new Nepali OEM brand. The brand mainly focuses on smartwatches and TWS earbuds. As a result, the PBS-001 is the only portable Bluetooth speaker from the company so far. It’s priced at NPR 2,99, but you can get it for cheaper as it tends to go on sale on Daraz time and again.

It has a unique dome-shaped design with the driver firing upwards through perforations that remind me of the Y-shaped logo of the Lenovo Legion brand.

At 240 grams, it is the heaviest speaker on this list, which I would have been okay with if it packed a high impedance driver, but what you get here is a 4 Ohm speaker with a 5W output which is loud but not uncommon in this price range.

Talking about the sound, Purble PBS-001 delivers clear vocals and decent highs. You can notice distortions at higher levels so it is best to leave the speaker at 60 – 80% range. There is bass too but it is not as prominent as the mids and the highs.

Weirdly enough, all the buttons are placed on the bottom in a horse-shoe-like arrangement which is not convenient at all. The buttons don’t have the same level of tactility – some buttons are more clicky and others which kind of feels weird. Also, the 4-hour battery life is just decent.

Purple PBS-001

Purple PBS-001 Specifications:

  • Dimension: 100 x 100 x 45.5mm
  • Weight: 240 grams
  • Audio Driver: 5W, 4 Ohm, 52mm
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.0
  • Controls: Power on, Volume up/down, Play/Pause button
  • Battery backup: Up to 4 hours
  • Protection: IPX4
  • I/O: Micro-USB (Charging)
  • Built-in microphone: Yes
  • Price in Nepal: Rs. 2,499

4. Havit SK800BT

Fourth on our list of best budget speakers in Nepal is the Havit SK800BT. Before we get into the audio bits, I would like to highlight how well-designed this speaker is. It has this compact form factor that is best suited for a computer desk or even bedside. This is a front-facing speaker with a fabric grille over the driver. You have all the controls on the top where you can easily access them. They are quite clicky as well. All the ports are concealed by a flap at the back. You also get a lanyard for times you do decide to take the speaker outdoors.

I was pretty surprised by its loudness as Havit advertises it as a 4W speaker. It gets a little noisy at the highest volume but it’s still enjoyable nonetheless. Havit SK800BT has better depth and instrument separation compared to the Purble PBS-001. The bass, though not punchy, is also better.

The only complaint that I have with this speaker is its battery life. It is only rated for 6 hours of playback at moderate volume. Also, it takes quite a long time to charge fully (~ 4 hours).

HAVIT SK800BT

Havit SK800BT Specifications:

  • Dimension: 96 x 68 x 64mm
  • Weight: 190 grams
  • Protection: IPX6 (Water Resistant)
  • Audio Driver: 4W,

3. Ultima Dynamite

Starting at around Rs. 2,000, it is the most affordable speaker on this list. This speaker is from Ultima, a Nepal-based OEM, which is growing in popularity in both offline and online spaces.

Coming to the Dynamite, it sports a rugged design and is also IPX6-rated against splashes. Despite the tough design, the speaker is pretty lightweight as it’s mostly made of plastic. It has a built-in lanyard, too, which makes it easy to carry around. There are rubber feats throughout the outer woven texture allowing for different placements.

That said, I recommend placing it upright, as placing it otherwise can cause the surface underneath to vibrate, ruining the experience. Ultima Dynamite can get pretty loud, making it a viable option when going on a picnic or any outdoor adventure. That said, the overall audio quality is not that great if you are looking to install it on your desk or bedside. It has a boomy sound that sometimes masks mids and other details.

There is even a microphone in here that lets you activate voice assistant from the phone. Likewise, you can use it wired with the included audio jack or skip the phone entirely and blast your favorite music from an SD card. The company claims up to 11 hours of battery life on a single charge, but in our test, it was around 5 hours on high volume. That said, the endurance can vary depending on the usage.

2. MIVI ROAM 2

This is not a problem with the next speaker on this list which is the Mivi Roam 2. It is a Bluetooth speaker with great battery life which also sounds good. The main selling point is undoubtedly its battery life. Mivi Roam 2 claims endurance of up to 24 hours but it is at mid-volume and you will have different experiences depending upon your usage. Still, the speaker lasted over multiple office days in our tests.

It’s compact, and the build quality is great, with an official IPX7 rating. There’s a wide range of colors to match the aesthetics of your room, and you can even take it outside by hanging it by the lanyard. You can even use it plugged in using an Aux-in cable. The built-in microphone means it can take on the role of a speakerphone too.

Even better is the overall sound quality. It is not as loud as the Wrap, nor does it have sharp trebles. The sound signature is quite balanced, so whether you listen to pop, rock, or hip-hop, you will surely get a pleasurable listening experience.

All in all, it’s a good all-around speaker for NPR 3000. But then, the balanced sound is not for everyone, as it can feel void of impact at times.

Bagging the best of the bunch crown is none other than the Ultima Rock speaker. This budget BT speaker packs impressive specs for the price and performs well too. First up, this guy boasts 12W of power, it is super loud too. And it doesn’t crank up that bad in the highest volume too. Plus, there are RGB lights on each side for a party vibe.

Ultima Rock Speaker

In terms of ingress protection, you get an IPX5 rating here. So, minor splashes of water shouldn’t damage this thing. Likewise, powering the Ultima Rock is a 2200mAh battery which tops up fully in 2.5 hours. Google finally agrees to delete browsing information collected in Incognito!

0

For years, Google’s Incognito mode has been promoted as a way for users to browse the internet without leaving any traces. However, Google is now facing the reality that this claim hasn’t held up. In a significant development, Google has agreed to delete or make anonymous billions of records of web browsing data collected during Incognito mode sessions, as part of a proposed class action settlement filed on Monday. In this article, let’s dive into discussing the latest Google Incognito Lawsuit saga in more detail.

Google Incognito Lawsuit Overview

What does the settlement involve?

The proposed settlement, stemming from the lawsuit Brown v. Google, aims to clarify Google’s data collection practices in Incognito mode and impose limits on future data collection. If approved by a federal judge in California, it could impact 136 million Google users. Initiated in 2020, the lawsuit was led by Google account holders alleging illegal tracking through Incognito mode.

Valued at $5 billion, the settlement’s worth is based on the data Google would delete and what it couldn’t gather. Google must address data collected in private browsing sessions up to December 2023, ensuring any remaining data is stripped of identifiable information.

Google Incognito Lawsuit

Responses to the Settlement

The plaintiffs hailed the settlement as a win for online privacy, emphasizing its role in holding Google accountable. Google’s response, however, was mixed. José Castañeda, a Google spokesperson, welcomed the resolution but clarified that no financial compensation would be provided. He assured users of Google’s commitment to privacy, stating that data from Incognito mode would be deleted and not used for personalization.

Google Incognito Lawsuit: Conclusion

As part of the agreement, Google must update its disclosures regarding the limitations of Incognito mode, a change already underway in Chrome. Additionally, for the next five years, users will have the option to block third-party cookies by default in Incognito mode, reducing Google’s ability to track their activities across external websites.

Despite the proposed settlement not including damages for the class, affected individuals retain the right to file claims for compensation in California state court. Already, 50 such claims have been submitted, indicating a potential increase in litigation stemming from this significant settlement.
