Today I have the latest smartphone from Tecno – the Camon 30 Premier! And before starting off with this Tecno Camon 30 Premier review, let me tell you something… If you have been following Tecno closely, you will be surprised by how improved their phones have become lately. And this (show phone) is a perfect example of how Tecno, as a brand, has grown and is getting really competitive.

The Camon 30 Premier is priced at Rs. 24,000 Pesos in the Philippines and some INR . 36,999 in India for the sole 12GB RAM and 512GB storage variant. And at that price, I think it has a LOT to offer, especially with the cameras.

Tecno Camon 30 Premier Review

Design

Anyway, let me start my review with this unique-looking design! If you look at the design of most of the phones under 35,000, honestly they all look quite boring with Plastic bodies, right?  But, here, the Tecno Camon 30 Premier is trying to offer a premium experience right away. It has a more robust aluminum frame and a nice eco-leather back that nicely fuses with the metal on the right side like this.

I also like this modern-looking camera module, which gives off a flagship phone vibe. Now, I don’t know how to explain this, but the top half of the Camon 30 Premier’sback protrudes like this, which helps for a better grip while holding the phone. So…Overall, I like its solid heft and it definitely feels like you are carrying a flagship phone. BTW, I am currently reviewing the Poco F6 and the Realme GT Neo 6T and they don’t feel like I am holding an expensive phone. So, great job by Tecno in this regard.

Camon 30 Premier Notification LED

I also like this LED notification on the back which lights up when I receive a call or notifications. It’s just one of those small quality-of-life things you might like having on your phone.

Display

Upfront, I am happy with the display quality too. The Tecno Camon 30 Premier has minimal bezels all around, but more than that Tecno has included a nice OLED LTPO panel that refreshes at as low as 10Hz and can go up to 120Hz. It also produces nice colour, viewing angles and contrast, and the touch response is great too. However, HDR support on Netflix and Amazon Prime is missing here. But that’s something the company can push via an update, so I hope that will happen soon!

This display of the Camon 30 Premier can get fairly bright as well, but I struggled a bit while using it outdoors in direct sunlight. So, not as good as the competition, but it’s completely fine when used indoors. I also would have liked it if the fingerprint sensor was a little above , it’s positioned a bit lower for my small hands to reach easily, but never mind! It’s fast and responsive, so I got used to it pretty quickly.

Audio and Haptics

That being said, I like the haptic feedback here. It seems like Tecno has used top-grade X-asis motor, so it feels pleasing to type on. Likewise, the speakers on it sound nice with Dolby Atmos support.

It can get very loud too with slightly higher trebles, but overall I had a nice time listening to music and watching movies on this phone.

UI and Software

Another aspect where I feel like about the Camon 30 Premier is its improved UI. Tecno is in the right direction is its software game.  Two or three years ago, Tecno’s software was just trash. There was a lot of bloatware which I could not uninstall and it would get frustrating. Plus, they were even accused of coming with pre-installed malware in Africa.

Tecno Camon 30 Premier UI/OS

But things have changed a lot since last year! Tecno’s new HiOS has been as clean and refined as stock Android. There are some pre-installed apps but most of them can be uninstalled or disabled. Plus, Tecno has also finally committed to providing 3 years of OS upgrades, so thats great process to see.

Performance

The overall performance of the Camon 30 Premier is also more than satisfactory! It’s definitely not as fast as the Poco or IQOO, but the Dimensity 8200 Ultra thats powering this phone is a decent chipset and I didn’t find it to be slow. The 12GB RAM also helps, so I was able to get a fast day-to-day experience here.

Tecno Camon 30 Premier Gaming

Tecno has also recently pushed an update that has improved the thermals. Previously, it used to get warm quite fast and quite easily, but now it remains cool. Even in terms of gaming, I am seeing better temperatures and fps after the update. But, if you are a hardcore gamer, you will get better gaming results on phones like Poco F6 or the Neo 9 Pro. But, if you don’t play a lot of games, like me, this phone will work just fine.

Battery and Charging

The only area I think Tecno should improve is optimizing the battery endurance. Although the Camon 30 Premier has a big enough 5000mAh battery, an LTPO screen, and a 4nm energy-efficient chipset, I am not getting as good of battery life here.

Tecno Camon 30 Premier Charging

The max I am getting is like 5-5.5 hours of SOT, it should be providing me with better backup! There seems to be some optimisation issue. The overnight battery drain is also quite high, so..! Thankfully, Tecno has provided a fast 70W wired charger inside the box, which can get the phone from 0 to 100% in about 45 minutes!

Cameras

Ok, another aspect I believe where the Tecno Camon 30 Premier stands out against the competition is its cameras! The company is marketing it as the first mid-range smartphone with Sony’s dedicated imaging chip, which helps the CPU’s ISP for faster and better image processing.

Tecno Camon 30 Premier Camera

Along with that, the camera hardware looks promising as well with a 50MP Sony IMX 890 main lens, a 50MP Ultrawide lens, and a 50MP periscope lens with 3x optical zoom. Upfront too, we have a 50MP selfie camera.

Tecno Camon 30 Premier Camera

Ok so first, let me talk about the portraits and a disclaimer: if you like taking portraits… you will be happy with what the Camon 30 Premier does.

Portraits

You can click in different focal lengths like 1X, 1.5X, and 2X, but the 3X 70mm portraits from the periscope are something outstanding. The shots are something that can even be compared to a flagship phone. The background blur, the skin tone, edge detection in the Camon 30 Premier is superbly rendered. Even my dog’s portrait looks so good. The best thing is the near-natural color reproduction and detail preservation!

Main Camera

Even from the main camera, the output is nice. I am not a fan of the warmth the photos have most of the time, and the colour tuning could have been better too but the details, sharpness and dynamic range are most of the good here.

The only that Tecno tends to go overboard is with the contrast and shadow processing sometimes, but other than that, in good lighting conditions, the photos come out quite nice. Much better than the Poco, Realme or IQOO phones.

Night Time

That’s especially true during nighttime! Just look at these samples, they are just outstanding! I mean, I have never seen a mid-range phone process exposure, sharpness and highlights so well during nighttime.

Trust me when I say this, out of all the nighttime samples I have taken from this phone, only 2-3 are not good, otherwise, the nighttime capabilities of its primary lens is quite good. The 3x nighttime photos are not bad too, the sharpness and everything are good, but it’s just that sometimes the images look a bit faded.

UltraWide

Even the ultra-wide lens is above average in my books. Here, even though it is a 50MP sensor, the details are not comparable to its main lens and you will notice a definite degradation in dynamic range too. That stands true for both daytime as well as nighttime ultra-wide photos.

Selfies

Also, selfies are just okay here, nothing extra. Sometimes you can get a few nice shots but at times, the pictures are contrasty and shadows are not maintained well!

Videography

Videography-wise, Tecno has surprised me once again. You can shoot 4k 60 fps footage from all four lenses. Weirdly, the phone does not let you switch between the lenses at any resolution, so that’s something I hope an update will fix it.

At 4k 60 fps, the videos don’t have good stabilization, but if you switch to 30 fps the videos are quite nice with nice colors and details as well.

Tecno Camon 30 Premier Review Conclusion

So, if you look at all the smartphones that come within its price range, most of them are focusing on performance & performance only! But I think Tecno has surprisingly found a way to offer all-rounder balanced features here! So, yeah, a surprisingly good phone from Tecno that’s easy for me to recommend, especially if you want the best camera for the price. However, the device has not been launched in Nepal just yet, but if it arrives, it might be the time of the year to switch to Tecno.

Redmi Note 13R launched and it’s barely an upgrade…

Redmi silently added a new member to its Note series. Even though it is the successor to Redmi Note 12R, there are barely any meaningful updates. Thus, the latest Redmi phone is more or less the repackaging of the same old thing. Anyway, let’s discuss the Redmi Note 13R further in this article including its price in Nepal.

Redmi Note 13R Overview

Design and Display

As I mentioned earlier, the phone has not changed much from its prior generation. This reigns true in terms of design as well. Given that, the overall outlook of the phone is the same. However, it does receive an updated finishing touch. The company website has two different entries for the Redmi Note 13R. One entry includes three colour options, two of which have a monotone finish and the remaining has wavy patterns. Meanwhile, the other entry comprises an additional three options with a shimmery finish and a distinct black camera island.

On the front, the phone dons a 6.79-inch LCD with FHD+ resolution. You get a dynamic refresh rate ranging from 30Hz to 120Hz on the Redmi Note 13R. Similarly, the screen also offers full DC dimming with 2047 dimming levels. Additionally, it also comes with a 240Hz touch sampling rate and a peak brightness of 550 nits.

Performance

The Redmi Note 13R does not get any update in terms of the primary processor. This means that this phone still ships with the same Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 under its helm. Software-wise, the phone thankfully ships with Xiaomi’s HyperOS out of the box instead of MIUI.

Redmi Note 13R Performance

In the meantime, it is available in six different configurations divided between the two listings. The available memory and storage combo on this phone are 4GB+128GB, 6GB + 128GB, 8GB + 128GB, 8GB + 256GB, 12GB + 256GB, and 12GB + 512GB.

Camera and Battery

Asus Vivobook (2024) notebooks are official in Nepal!

The 2024 iteration of the Vivobook lineup with new Intel processors is now available in the country. In this article, let’s discuss the latest Asus Vivobook laptops including the Vivobook 14 (2024), 15, and 16, their features, price in Nepal, and availability.

Asus Vivobook (2024) Overview

Design and Display

Not much has changed in the new Vivobook machines from the outside. You still get the iconic Vivobook cutout on the lid, the textured Enter key, and the same color options housed in the same chassis. That means more colorful choices for the smaller 14-inch and 15-inch while the 16-inch will have to do with just Silver & Black. Weight-wise, the Vivobook 14 weighs 1.4kg, while the 15 and 16-inch variants are a couple of hundred grams heavier at 1.7 and 1.88 kg respectively. They all feature Asus’ micro-bacterial Guard and boast military-grade endurance.

Asus Vivobook 2024 Design and BuildOn the display side, you are getting Full HD screens on the Vivobook 14 and Vivobook 15 laptops.  The 16-inch one can be configured with either a FHD+ screen or a sharper 1440p panel. All are equipped with 60Hz IPS screens with a modest 250 nits of brightness and varying color accuracy. Variants include 45% NTSC displays, 100% sRGB ones, and a special 100% Adobe colors one but only the former has arrived in Nepal thus far.

Performance and Memory

Powering the new Vivobook laptops is the Intel Core Series 1 processors. You get a pick between the Core 3 100U, Core 5 120U, and the Core 7 150U. Unlike the Meteor Lake Core Ultra processors, these are based on Raptor Lake architecture much like last year’s 13th Gen Intel Core CPUs. Hence, these do not get the upgraded Arc graphics and are based on less-efficient Intel 7 architecture.

As for the memory, the Vivobooks feature soldered memory with an additional SO-DIMM slot for future upgrades. There’s a single M.2 slot housing an NVME SSD.

Battery and Connectivity

Despite the difference in size, all Vivobook notebooks (2024) ship with 42Wh batteries with a 45W charger in the box. They feature single-stream WiFi 6 alongside Bluetooth 5.2. For wired connectivity, you get a USB 3.2 Type-C port, two USB 3 Type-A ports, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI, and an audio jack.

Asus ROG Strix G18 (2023) with RTX 4070 available for purchase in Nepal

2

In a bid to strengthen its hold in the premium gaming laptop segment, Asus has unveiled the new Strix G18 in Nepal. This gaming laptop features the latest processors for Intel and NVIDIA, as well as other gaming technology from Asus itself. The Asus ROG Strix G18 (2023) has now launched in Nepal, so let’s look at its specs, features, and official price.

Asus ROG Strix G18 (2023) Overview:

Performance

The new ROG Strix G18 packs the latest gaming components from Intel and NVIDIA. On the CPU front, you basically have the option to choose between two 13th-gen “Raptor Lake” processors. The base variant features the Core i7-13650HX, whereas you can get the i9-13980HX by spending a little extra.

There are relatively more options for the graphics. Here, you can pair the ROG Strix G18 from entry-level RTX 4050 up to RTX 4080 on the high-end. The latter is capable of drawing up to 175W of power whereas all other GPU variants max out at 140W.

New Tri-Fan Cooling Solution

While most gaming laptops feature a dual-fan setup, the ROG Strix G18 adds a third one solely for GPU and VRAM. This Tri-Fan technology was first introduced on the Flow X16 (2022) but Asus has scaled it for the new 16-inch and 18-inch ROG Gaming laptops. Likewise, Asus has also remodeled the full-width heatsink of the Flow X16 for the Strix G18. As a result, the new model has a 92.23% larger heat sink compared to its predecessor. This is paired with seven heat pipes and Asus also includes Conductonaut Extreme liquid metal on the models with RTX 4080 graphics.

Design and Display

Moving on, the Asus ROG Strix G18 comes with an 18-inch QHD “Nebula Display” that refreshes at 240Hz. It boasts a 3ms response rate and is compatible with NVIDIA G-Sync. Moreover, the screen boasts 500 nits of brightness and 100% DCI-P3 coverage. There is also a cheaper option with a WUXGA screen with a 165Hz refresh rate and 100% sRGB coverage. It still retains the G-SYNC support and Dolby Vision HDR.

Asus offers the ROG Strix G18 in two color options, Eclipse Gray and Volt Green. The laptop has a cyberpunk-like aesthetics with all the pixel art accents and painted patterns above the exhaust ports. The laptop measures up to 30.8mm in thickness and weighs around 3.1 kg.

AYANEO launches a mini PC with APU and an adjustable display

AYANEO recently held an event where they revealed a bunch of retro products updated with modern-day hardware. The event showcased handheld consoles including a Game Boy-like offering, a graphics dock, a power bank, and a mini PC. In this article, we will highlight the latter product i.e. AYANEO Retro Mini PC AM01S and also discuss its price in Nepal.

AYANEO Retro Mini PC AM01S Overview

Design

This mini PC from AYANEO is the successor to the Retro Mini PC AM01 and gets an “S” added to its name. The device remotely resembles the Macintosh Plus — just like its predecessor — and looks like it is straight out of the 80s. It has got a bit of redesign, but, still gives the same retro vibe.

The AYANEO Retro Mini PC AM01S comes with a flip-up screen which is the first in the series. The company has not revealed the exact specifications of this panel as of yet. However, they do mention that it will display performance data while also allowing for performance mode adjustments. Given that, this display is likely a touchscreen. Other than that, this mini PC comes with a wide choice of port options. This includes two USB4s, two 2.5G ethernet, six USB Type-A, two HDMIs, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

Performance

In terms of performance, the AYANEO Retro Mini PC AM01S relies on the Ryzen 8000HS series APU. To be more specific, this thing packs either a Ryzen 7 8845HS or a Ryzen 9 8945HS processor. Both these silicon are built on Zen 4 architecture, rely on AMD Radeon 780M for graphics, and come with AMD Ryzen AI. While there are a lot of similarities between the two processors, they are set apart by a slight difference in their clock speeds.

AYANEO Reto Mini PC AM01S Processors

Additionally, the Chinese manufacturer has pushed the TDP of these chips by 20W and as a result, achieves a 65W TDP. In the meantime, AYANEO has also equipped the Retro Mini PC AM01S with a dual-fan cooling system to keep the thermals steady. Besides that, there is no information on the additional hardware of the device. Regardless, it will likely be available in various configurations as well as a barebone option similar to its previous iteration.

AYANEO Retro Mini PC AM01S Specifications

  • Design: Compact retro design with flip-up screen
  • Display: Multi-angle adjustable, touchscreen*
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS or Ryzen 9 8945HS (overclocked to 65W)
  • Ports: 2x USB4 (Type-C), 6x USB Type-A, 2x HMDI, 2x 2.5G Ethernet, 1x 3.5mm combo headphone jack, 1x DC-in
  • Colour: White

AYANEO Retro Mini PC AM01S Price in Nepal and Availability

The product was announced on 18 May 2024 through the company’s official portal. However, the company has neither revealed the launch date nor its pricing so far. The previous model went for anywhere between USD 199 to USD 499. Therefore, considering the upgrades, the AYANEO Retro Mini PC AM01S might go for upwards of USD 299, which translates to its price in Nepal being around NPR 47,599.

[The price I mentioned for this product is merely my speculation, hence, the official price will most definitely be different. And the chances of this mini PC making its way to Nepal is quite unlikely too.]
