HP announced the refreshed version of its Omen 17 gaming laptop in 2023, featuring new chips from Intel and Nvidia. The inclusion of new hardware from Intel and Nvidia is the most significant change to the HP Omen 17 this year. The CPU options include the new Intel Core i9-13900HX and Core i7-13620HX, both of which utilize a hybrid architecture with a combination of high-performance and efficient cores.

HP has not specified the graphics card choices, but users are likely to be able to select at least a GeForce RTX 4080, if not an RTX 4090. In terms of memory and storage, the Omen 17 supports up to 32GB of DDR5 RAM (running at a speed of 5600MHz) and up to 2TB of NVMe storage.

Additionally, the laptop features a new cooling solution called “Tempest Cooling technology” which is designed to provide a desktop-like gaming experience in a compact form factor.

In terms of design, the Omen 17 remains largely unchanged from the previous model. But this year’s model marks the first time that an HP gaming laptop is available with an optical-mechanical keyboard. It is said to be up to 25 times faster than a typical keyboard, making it a valuable asset for gamers and alike.

The Cupertino-based company got a lot of stick for “just adding a button.” However, many of the updates were software-based, including the integration of Apple Intelligence. As I mentioned earlier, a lot of the upgrades on the 2024 version of iPad Mini come from the software front. This tablet is now “supercharged” with Apple Intelligence. Users get features like Writing Tools that help refine what they write across various apps such as Mail, Notes, Pages, and even third-party apps. Likewise, they will also be getting the updated Siri with richer language understanding and deeper system integration. Not only that, the users can tap into ChatGPT and its extensive knowledge on this iPad as well.

The DJI Avata 2 looks more or less similar to its predecessor. It comes with four propellers and a camera visible right from the get-go. The camera here has a 1/1.3-inch sensor with an effective resolution of 12MP. Meanwhile, it is capable of taking 4K videos at up to 60 fps. Similarly, for power, it relies on a 2,150 mAh battery and offers approximately 23 minutes of flight time.

Intel’s mid-range Arc A770 graphics card now available in Nepal

The Intel Arc A770 GPU was announced alongside the 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPUs. This limited edition GPU has finally made their way here into Nepal. So let’s get into the specifications, features, availability, and expected price of the Alchemist-based Intel Arc A770 GPU in Nepal.

Intel Arc A770 Overview:

Intel Arc graphics cards come with AV1 encode and decode support, and the software drivers work best with DirectX 12 and Vulkan API. As a result, the company claims that the Arc 770 will match or outperform the RTX 3060 in DirectX 12 or Vulkan games. In addition, Intel claims that the GPU can deliver a 65% peak performance improvement over the competition in ray tracing games, though it does not specify the specific hardware, so we assume RTX 3060.

But note that not all games make use of DirectX 12 and Vulkan. In fact, the most popular games on the Steam chart actually make use of older DirectX versions, which Intel Arc cards like the A770 lack optimization for. As a result, Intel is dividing games into three tiers based on how well they have been optimized for Arc GPUs.

“Best in Class” Performance in Tier 1

Games with DirectX 12 and Vulcan that run exceptionally well on Intel’s discrete GPUs fall under Tier 1. Intel claims that Arc GPUs will “kill everyone” in price-to-performance and will boast “best in class” performance in these titles.

Tier 2

The second tier or Tier 2 games, like their Tier 1 counterparts, are built on the latest APIs but are less optimized for gaming. These games will still run on the Intel Arc GPU like the A770 but not as good as the Tier 1 games.

Dismal status of Tier 3

Moving on, Tier 3 games are those that use DirectX 11 or older APIs. And Intel has done very little to optimize these games. As a result, these games will perform inferiorly on systems equipped with A770 and other Intel Arc graphics cards. For example, in a test conducted by the Linus Tech Tips team, Tom Raider dropped from 80 fps to 39 fps after switching from DirectX 12 to 11 on the Arc A770.

Because the Arc A770 is the top-tier Alchemist card, it includes the ACM-G10 chip, which has 32 Xe-cores, 4096 ALUs, and 32 Ray Tracing units. It comes in two memory sizes: 8 GB and 16 GB. They both use GDDR6 VRAM but the 8GB model has a slightly lower bandwidth and memory clock.  All other specifications are identical, including the 256-bit memory lane. It also has a Total Board Power (TBP) of 225W.

Alongside the headline-making Ryzen 9950X3D, AMD also announced its less powerful sibling: the Ryzen 9 9900X3D with fewer cores and lower power draw. Regardless, the new CPU seems just as impressive as its older brother on paper, it’s sure to be a popular pick among many gamers and creators alike.

Since we’ve already covered the top-of-the-line Ryzen 9 9950X3D, let’s talk about the major differentiating factors between the two. The Ryzen 9 9900X3D has fewer Zen 5 cores (12 vs 16) and slightly lower clock speeds compared to its pricier counterpart. It also draws less power at 120W and has slightly less amount of cache. Regardless, it’s still a good enough upgrade over its predecessor: the Ryzen 9 7900X3D with Zen 4 cores.

To be specific, the Ryzen 9 9900X3D has 12 cores with 24 threads in total, with a boost clock of up to 5.5 GHz. The TDP stays the same as its predecessor and so does the amount of cache (140Mb in total), but it’s using AMD’s 2nd gen V-cache technology under the hood. This means the cache is situated below the Core Complex Dies (CCDs) so the CPU can push higher frequencies without worrying about heat. This has resulted in better performance for X3D CPUs outside of pure gaming with these chips performing as well as their ‘X’ (Ryzen 9 9900X) counterparts on creative and productivity tasks.
