Redmi A3 review: A budget phone with a bold design

If you’re in the market for a very affordable and feature-packed smartphone or need a secondary phone, you are at the right place. The title would have already made it clear, yes, I’m talking about the Redmi A3. The latest budget offering is priced at just 12,000 rupees for the 3/64 GB variant, and 13,000 rupees for the 4/128 GB variant.

For this price, Redmi has gone with a stunning design, and the unit I have with me has a leather-like back texture. Additionally, Redmi has provided Android 14 here with the Helio G36 chipset, which is a decent performer for this price range. When you hear all these specs, it sounds too good to be true, so how does the actual phone fare? Is it the best budget phone? Let’s find that out in my Redmi A3 review.

Before heading in, let’s take a look at the specifications of the Redmi A3.

Redmi A3 Review

A bold design

  • 168.3 mm x 76.3 mm x 8.3 mm (192 / 199 gm)
  • Leather/Glass Back, Plastic frames

Let’s start with the design – which is one of its main USP. I mean, just look at this! Would you believe this is a phone priced at 12,000? The camera module is bold and looks premium as compared to other phones in this segment. If you were to compare it to Xiaomi’s flagship phone, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, the camera module looks similar – so I can say, there’s been no compromise in terms of looks.

Moreover, the leather-like finish gives it a premium feel on my Olive Green variant. But if you are someone who prefers a glass back, you can choose the Midnight Black and Star Blue color options as well.

Display

  • 6.52” HD+ IPS LCD display
  • 90Hz refresh rate

In terms of display, Redmi has opted for a dewdrop notch screen. I know, it’s understandable for a budget phone to opt for this notch. But Tecno’s Spark Go 2024 brings a hole-punch panel in the very same segment and it looks better.

Apart from that, this is a decent 6.71-inch IPS LCD panel with HD+ resolution. It’s good enough for watching YouTube videos, scrolling through Facebook, or browsing Instagram reels considering the price.

Redmi A3 Social Media Usage

One improvement over the previous model, the Redmi A2, is the inclusion of a 90Hz refresh rate display instead of the static 60Hz. However, don’t expect a super smooth scrolling experience as it’s a budget phone.

At times, I did feel it’s a bit sluggish, apps take a bit of time to load, and switching between them isn’t always seamless. However, compared to the previous 60Hz screen, it’s an improvement. I hope upcoming updates will further optimize the 90Hz refresh rate.

Another thing to note is that Redmi has only provided a peak brightness of 500 nits and during my usage period, I found the screen under direct sunlight to be not bright enough.

Performance

  • MediaTek Helio G36 4G (12nm)
  • Octa-core (4×2.2 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53
  • PowerVR GE8320 GPU

As for the processor, Redmi has opted for the same one used in the Redmi A2/A2+, the Mediatek Helio G36, which is an octa-core chip. For day-to-day usage, the phone performs decently. Basic games like Subway Surfers and Temple Run run smoothly. But sometimes, it does feel a bit sluggish, especially during multitasking.

Redmi A3 Gaming

Software and UI

  • Android 14

Talking about the software, surprisingly, this phone boots Android 14 out of the box. Why surprisingly? Because even Xiaomi’s recently launched entire Note 13 Series ships with Android 13 out of the box.

Redmi A3 deserves some praise in terms of software updates. Xiaomi has promised 2 years of OS updates and 3 years of security patches, which is commendable for a budget phone.

Redmi A3 Android 14

Unlike its predecessors, which came with stock Android Go Edition, Redmi A3 comes with full-fledged Android 14. However, it’s not entirely stock Android as you’ll still find some MIUI elements here and there, like in the status bar and camera app. Plus, the software info also mentions MIUI, which is a bit strange.

Given its budget nature, it’s not the smoothest device, but if it were running Android Go Edition like its predecessor, it might have been more forgiving on this chip.

Camera

  • Dual (8MP + 0.08 MP depth)
  • 5MP selfie

This phone comes with a dual-camera setup, featuring an 8-megapixel main camera and a less useful 0.08 MP auxiliary lens. There’s also a 5MP selfie shooter on the front.

Daylight

Considering the price, I didn’t have high expectations for the camera, and as expected, it delivers average photos. Photos taken under daylight conditions look decent, but zooming in reveals a lack of detail, which is understandable for an 8MP camera.

Lowlight

Similarly, night-time photos are quite basic, lacking a dedicated night mode option.

Portraits

When it comes to portraits, you get decent enough results for a budget phone. I really don’t wanna complain a lot here.

Selfies

Plus, the 5MP selfie camera does a decent job for casual selfies and video calls.

Videography

Video recording tops out at 1080p 30fps, and there’s no stabilization, which is expected at this price point. But again, for a budget phone, it’s decent.

Battery

  • Non-removable Li-Po 5000mAh battery
  • 10W charging

The Redmi A3 packs a 5000mAh battery, which lasted me about 1.5 days with my usage. Light users can easily stretch it to 2 days. However, it supports only 10W charging, which takes around 2 hours to fully charge! Yes, 2 hours! It would have been nice to see at least 18W fast charging support.

The good news is that Redmi has finally bid farewell to the old-fashioned Micro USB port in favor of a USB Type-C port, which is a welcome change. Plus, it supports dual 4G and microSD card expansion. It also supports Band 20 for 4G, ensuring compatibility in rural areas.

Redmi A3 Review: Conclusion

Overall, Redmi has delivered a decent player in the budget segment with the A3. Its bold design, Gorilla Glass 3 protection, and out-of-the-box Android 14 experience are its strong points. Plus, it offers decent camera performance and acceptable overall performance.

So if you’re looking for a secondary smartphone, this should work fine! And its target audience is slightly older folks who don’t need a high-performance device. And for first-time smartphone users, the Helio G36’s performance should be adequate.

Redmi A3 Usage

In conclusion, for those on a tight budget and not looking for high performance, the Redmi A3 is a good option at just 12,000 rupees. But if you can spare a bit more from your budget, for just 2,000 more, you can go for the Redmi 13C, which offers better performance and specs.

Redmi A3 Review: Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Bold design
  • 90Hz display
  • Boots on Android 14
  • Decent performance

Cons

  • UI can be more optimized
  • Only 10W charging

Vivo X Fold 3 unveiled as the lightest foldable ever alongside the Pro variant!

0

Vivo recently lifted the curtains on its 3rd generation of foldables with a vanilla X Fold 3 model alongside a beefier Pro. In this article, let’s take a quick look at both, their similarities, differences, expected price in Nepal, and availability details.

Vivo X Fold 3 Series: Overview

Design and Display

On the design side of things, there’s not a lot of deviation but you’ll still be able to distinguish the two. The vanilla Vivo X Fold 3 features a side-mounted fingerprint sensor while the Pro model hides its ultra-sonic tech under the display.

Moreover, the Pro is also beefier at 236 grams and rated IPX8 against water splashes. As such, it misses out on the lightest (in-ward) foldable title held by its base sibling (Vivo X Fold 3) at just 219 grams. That’s less than the popular bar flagships like the iPhone 15 Pro Max (221 grams), and the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (232 grams).

Don’t mistake the lightness for a lack of strength though as the X Fold 3 series is certified to withstand 500,000 folds with its lightweight carbon fiber hinge and also features the  Swiss SGS five-star drop-resistant rating.

Vivo X Fold3 design

Talking of the display(s), both share identical setups. There’s a larger 8.03″ foldable OLED panel on the inside while the external one measures 6.53 inches. Both are 120Hz LTPO screens with a local peak brightness of 4,500 nits. Pixel-wise, you are getting sharp displays with pixel densities of ~412 and ~457 ppi on the outer and inner screens respectively. Besides that, you get all the goodies like HDR 10+ certification, Dolby Vision, and 1 billion colors.

Performance

Under the hood, the base Vivo X Fold 3 features last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor while the Pro variants ships with the latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC. Both are 4nm processors manufactured by TSMC but the latter features more powerful cores at higher clocks and a better GPU + NPU. As for the memory, you can configure both with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage.

Vivo X Fold3 Pro Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Camera

There’s a total of 5 cameras spread across the Vivo X Fold 3 foldable(s). The 50MP ultrawide and the 32MP selfie cameras (two) are shared between the models while the main and zoom lenses are buffed up in the Pro. The vanilla X Fold 3 features a 50MP 1/1.49” Sony sensor while its Pro sibling features a larger 1/1.3” OmniVision OV50H. The 50MP Sony portrait lens on the X Fold 3 is also replaced by a 64MP 3x persicope camera.

China prepares to ban AMD and Intel chips from goverment computers

In a recent geopolitical change, China is on a move to ban the chipset from US companies like AMD and Intel. And following the news, stocks of chipmaking giants Intel and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) took a hit on Monday morning. In this article, let’s dive into discussing the  latest Chinese regulations imposed on US chip manufacturing giants

China Bans AMD and Intel Overview

Chinese Government’s Technology Restrictions

The move comes from the Chinese government’s efforts to restrict foreign technology from its federal computers. This includes operating systems like Microsoft’s Windows and other database software produced overseas. Moreover, Beijing’s push for technological independence, termed xinchuang or “IT application innovation,” is a key component of China’s strategy across military, governmental, and state sectors. State-owned enterprises are mandated to transition to domestic technology providers by 2027, as directed by the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission. Quarterly progress reports on IT system revamps have been initiated, although certain foreign technologies may still be permitted for use.

China brings news regulations

Currently, China has approved eighteen chips for use, all of which are from domestic companies. Among these approved entities are Huawei and state-backed Phytium, both of which are listed on the U.S. trade embargo.

Impact on U.S. Semiconductor Industry

Amidst the ongoing competition with China, the United States government is advancing its investments in chipmaking, with American semiconductor firms reaping the benefits. In parallel, Intel is among the recipients of funds from the CHIPS and Science Act, a $52.7 billion initiative aimed at bolstering domestic chip production.

Intel cpu

Domestic Alternatives

The Chinese industry ministry, in late December, released a statement outlining three separate lists of CPUs, operating systems, and centralized databases deemed “safe and reliable” for a three-year period, all sourced from Chinese companies.

Market Response in the US

Initially, Intel’s stock dropped by about 3% when markets opened on Monday, with AMD also experiencing a 1% decline. However, by mid-morning, Intel managed to recover slightly, trading down only 2%, while AMD remained unchanged.

China bans AMD and Intel Conclusion

Although this move as understood only applies to government-related computers, this regulation could play an intensifying role in the China-US geopolitical landscape.

0

Poco, a sub-brand of Xiaomi has announced a “new” phone. This phone is a repackaging of the Redmi A3 which launched a while earlier. Let’s go ahead and discuss more on the Poco C61 including its expected price in Nepal.

Poco C61 Overview

Design and Display

As I have noted earlier, the Poco C61 is a reskin of the Redmi A3 and the design of the phone is almost the same as well. Given that, It comes in flat frames with a large centre-aligned circular camera island on the back. The Poco C61 also ships in the same three colours as the Redmi A3: Green, Blue, and Black. The green variant of the Redmi phone was available in a leather finish. However, that is not the case for the Poco offering — all the colour options ship with a glass back.

Poco C61 Design

A 6.71-inch screen greets you on the front with a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Moreover, the panel here is an LCD with HD+ resolution. In addition, it offers you a refresh rate of 90Hz, a touch sampling rate of 180Hz, and a peak brightness of 500 nits.

Performance

Under the hood, you get the MediaTek Helio G36 chipset, which is about a year old at this point. You see this processor in the Redmi A3 as well. It is an octa-core processor that comes with 12nm fabrication, and a peak clock speed of 2.2 GHz.

MediaTek Helio G36 SoC

The Poco C61 got rid of the 3GB memory option which was available in its Redmi counterpart. Given that, it comes in two configurations altogether — 4GB + 64GB, and 6GB + 128GB. You can expand the storage to 1TB via a MicroSD card when you require more storage on your phone. Similarly, you can also virtually extend the RAM On the software front, it boots on the stock Android 14.

Camera and the rest

An 8MP camera leads the optics department on the Poco C61. It is coupled with an “AI Camera”, which serves no purpose except for the phone’s aesthetics. Meanwhile, on the front, you get a 5MP shooter.

Poco C61 Features

In the tank, you get a 5,000 mAh battery which is pretty standard in 2024. You get dual SIM, 4G LTE, WiFi 5, and Bluetooth v5.4 for wireless connectivity. On the other hand, you get USB Type-C and a 3.5mm headphone jack for wired connections.
