A closer look at Huawei’s Kirin 9000S: CPU-GPU performance

0

Geek Bay, the trusted tech source for tech news, recently conducted a broad analysis of Huawei’s Kirin 9000S processor. The test basically focused on its CPU and GPU performance. Now, let’s break down the details in simpler terms.

Huawei Kirin 9000S Overview:

So, what’s inside this chip?

The Kirin 9000S processor is equipped with a CPU that features a powerful custom core running at 2.62GHz. Additionally, it has 3 capable medium custom cores operating at 2.15GHz, and 4 smaller but efficient A510 cores running at 1.5GHz.

The big custom core is less powerful than Snapdragon 888‘s X1 but consumes a bit more power, approximately 1W more. About the medium cores, they perform well but don’t quite match the energy efficiency of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1‘s A710. When it comes to saving power, the small A510 cores, however, are quite efficient. It surpasses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1’s A510 in efficiency.

Huawei Kirin 9000S CPU

Performance

In Geekbench 5, the Kirin 9000S scored 1005 points in single-core performance. Additionally, the multi-core score was 4019.

When running at its maximum capacity, the Kirin 9000 uses almost 13 watts of power from the motherboard.

In terms of energy usage, it actually performed better than the Snapdragon 888. However, when compared to the Snapdragon 865 and the original Kirin 9000, the new Kiring 9000S doesn’t seem as impressive.

Huawei Kirin 9000S performance

Hyper-Threading Boost

While turning on Hyper-Threading, the test resulted in a 21.8% boost in performance. But again, the chip consumed more power, 24.2% more to be exact.

GPU in the Kirin 9000S

The GPU Maleoon-910 in the Kirin 9000 boasts 4 cores running at 750MHz. It matches the Snapdragon 888 in performance and energy efficiency. When compared to Kirin 9000 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Kirin 9000S falls slightly behind in energy efficiency. Notably, there’s a significant gap compared to Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Gaming Performance

Some games are not fully optimized for the Kirin chip just yet. Due to this, the games are showing slightly lower frame rates. As per Geek Bay testing, “Cold Water Cold” reached 52 fps at 7.0W (compared to Kirin 9000’s 54 fps at 5.8W), and “Crackdown 3” achieved 58 fps at 7.0W (compared to Kirin 9000’s 56 fps at 7.5W).

Huawei Kirin 9000S GPU

Huawei Kirin 9000S: What’s next?

So, in a nutshell, the Kirin 9000S offers slightly better multi-core performance and a GPU that matches the Snapdragon 888. However, it has worse energy efficiency than other flagship chips. Still, it’s noteworthy that this chip is made domestically in China.

Moreover, there’s a rumor about Kirin 9100 chips possibly making their way into Huawei’s upcoming Mate 60 Pro+ and Mate 60 RS.

Polaroid I-2 is an instant camera with a mini display, Lidar ranging, and manual controls

0

Following up on the infamous Impossible-1 instant camera, Polaroid has introduced its predecessor with a slew of new and advanced features. But it sure doesn’t come cheap. In this article, let’s talk about the features, and expected price in Nepal of the Polaroid I-2 instant camera

Polaroid I-2 Overview:

For those unfamiliar, Polaroid Originals (or just Polaroid) is a Dutch company specializing in instant cameras. In late 2016, the company came up with the Impossible-1 which made physical photos that develop right in your hands.

However, it had some clear weaknesses regarding battery life, colors, focus, and auto exposure. Now, after 7 long years, they have finally followed up with the I-2 with built-in manual controls and Li-Dar autofocus making it the most advanced instant cam on the planet.

Polaroid I-2 Design

Features

Lidar ranging and autofocus

For starters, the I-2 features a 3-lens autofocus setup that uses lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) to produce “the sharpest” images of any Polaroid camera ever. Pair that with their wider apertures, and you can now click stunning bright portraits with beautiful depth of field. The I-2 has a fixed focal length of 98mm and supports 7 different f-stops from f/8-64.

Customization

There are 6 different camera modes: Aperture, Shutter, Multi-Exposure, Timer, Manual, and Auto. The multi-exposure mode is especially interesting as it allows for the layering of multiple shots for a totally different image. The camera also supports SX-70 on top of the 600, and i-Type film formats. Combining the two, advanced photographers get a lot of customization options which wasn’t out of the question up until now.

Polaroid I-2 Customization

Others

The Polaroid I-2 brings a much-needed upgrade. You get a small OLED display now, that allows for adjusting shutter speed, brightness, aperture, and shooting modes. This was missing on the I-1 where you had to use the companion app for it.

By the way, you can also attach additional filters to your I-2 but those will be sold separately. The camera has an internal battery that lasts for about 120 shots and it can recharged via USB-C. Other features include a built-in flash, Bluetooth connectivity, and app support.

Polaroid I-2 Specifications:

  • Build: PMMA plastic, Aluminium alloy, Stainless Steel
  • Dimensions: 149.9 x 119.3 x 91.2 mm
  • Weight: 1.26 kg
  • Lens: 3-element lens with continuous autofocus system
  • Focal Length: 98mm
  • Aperture: f/8, f/11, f/16, f/22, f/32, f/45, f/64
  • Camera Modes: Aperture, Shutter, Multi exposure, Timer, Manual, and Auto
  • Display: Outer(Mono LCM) + Viewfinder
  • Battery: Up to 120 shots, USB-C charging
  • App Support: Polaroid (iOS | Android)

Polaroid I-2 Price in Nepal and Availability

The instant cam costs a whopping USD 599. Very unlikely, if it makes it here, we expect the Polaroid I-2 price in Nepal to be around NPR 88,888.

MediaTek’s 3nm chip promises faster speed, and lower power usage

1

MediaTek is widely expected to announce the flagship Dimensity 9300 chipset in the fourth quarter of this year, with plans to power certain flagship phones in 2024. Likewise, a reliable source on Weibo, Digital Chat Station, has indicated that MediaTek along with TSMC has completed the chip design for another chipset using 3nm process and is prepared for its production, possibly the Dimensity 9400.

So, in this article, we will explore the expected performance boost this upcoming chipset will bring, the devices it is likely to power, and more.

MediaTek’s 3nm chip Overview

Performance

MediaTek placed a 3nm TSMC process and 5nm N5 TSMC together through which certain conclusions were derived. The new process increases speed by 18%, all while maintaining the same power consumption as the 5nm version. Moreover, when operating at the previous speed (5nm), the new process reduces power consumption by 32%. Additionally, this process brings about an approximately 60% increase in logic density.

MediaTek's 3nm chip probably the Dimensity 9400

Having said this, it is unclear how the chipset will function as compared to the 4nm process, integrated into most of the flagship chips nowadays. Also, Digital Chat Station pointed out that it the unsure if this chipset will follow ARM’s public version architecture with 4*X5 and 4*A730 cores for this upcoming 3nm chipset.

Will it only power phones?

It seems likely that MediaTek’s 3nm chipset won’t just be limited to Android phones. MediaTek has confirmed that this chipset will be integrated to power a range of devices, including phones, tablets, cars, and other devices

MediaTek’s 3nm chip Availability:

As of now, it appears highly likely that the chipset based on the 3nm process will be the Dimensity 9400. Its commercial availability is expected in the latter half of 2024. We are likely to see it in devices around 2025.
