Huawei Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro review: Why buy Apple or Samsung?

So… despite the US government’s best efforts, it turns out Huawei is doing quite alright by itself huh?

It is still among the largest smartphone makers in China, and the company is apparently planning for a global comeback as well. With its homemade Kirin chips… served on a delicious bowl of HarmonyOS. And it seems like the perfect time for a comeback ‘cause — as someone who just finished reviewing the incredible Mate 70 Pro+ — I can’t wait to check out more Huawei phones in the future.

Not just that but Huawei also overtook Apple as the world’s largest smartwatch maker last year. And… I’m pretty sure the new Watch GT 5 series had a big hand in that success. So there’s the regular Watch GT 5 that starts at NPR 29,990 here in Nepal, while the Watch GT 5 Pro costs NPR 49,990.

I’ve actually been testing them both for a few weeks at this point and guess what?

Although I couldn’t really switch to the Mate 70 as my primary phone due to the whole “Google apps and services” thing, the Watch GT 5 series has been tempting me to move away from my Apple Watch so. bad. ‘Cause it does pretty much everything I want from a smartwatch. And it does so with excellent battery life. Let me discuss all that in this full review of the Huawei Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro.

Huawei Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro review:

Battery life

  • Up to 7 / 14 days depending on case size
  • 10W wireless charging

Yes… the battery life is one of the best things about wearing a Huawei watch. Like it always has been. I tried so damn hard to kill its battery by turning on literally every single health-tracking feature I could find. I also recorded around half an hour of workout whenever I could and even then, both of them would go on for 7 – 8 days before I needed to fetch the charger. Which takes a little over an hour for a refill.

Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro - Charging

That week-long battery life is only possible with the larger 46 mm watch, by the way. Which is what I have. But even with the smaller models, I’m sure you’ll be good for at least 4 – 5 days before the battery runs out. Or in other words, the battery on this thing lasts long enough to make anyone with an Apple Watch or a Samsung watch suuuuuuper jealous.

Design and build

  • GT 5: 41 / 46 mm, Stainless steel frame
  • GT 5 Pro: 42 / 46 mm, Nanocrystal ceramic or titanium alloy frame
  • 20 / 22 mm universal strap support
  • 5 ATM, IP69K rating (both) + EN13319 (only GT 5 Pro)

Alright.

So as you can see, the Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro kinda look the same with these octagonal frames. While the smaller 41/42 mm timepieces have that traditional circular aesthetics. But although they may look similar, there are a couple of differences you should know about.

Like how the GT 5 Pro has a ceramic case on the 42 mm variant or a more lightweight titanium alloy on the larger one. The Watch GT 5, on the other hand, gets the “stainless steel” treatment for both sizes. So even though this is a pretty big watch, I love how it doesn’t weigh down my wrist at all. The “Pro” guy also has a couple of exclusive health tracking features and its display is covered by a more scratch-resistant, more shatter-resistant sapphire crystal glass as well.

Huawei Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro - Strap

Huawei does say the Watch GT 5 should handle scratches twice as much better than last year’s Watch GT 4, but man. I’ve been begging Huawei to include sapphire glass in all its flagship smartwatches every single year so this is a bit disappointing to see.

Display

  • 1.32 / 1.43-inches AMOLED panel
  • Sapphire crystal glass (only on GT 5 Pro)

You know what isn’t disappointing to see?

This gorgeous OLED display in itself. I mean… you give me a list of what you want from a flagship smartwatch screen and I’ll bet that the Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro will check off every single item. The texts, the animations… they all look perfectly sharp and readable, its color reproduction is equally impressive, and this is also one of the most responsive displays I’ve seen on a smartwatch.

It wakes up the moment I raise my wrist to check time, turns off the moment I’m done — and of course — the actual touch response itself is fantastic. Whether when I’m just scrolling through different pages or when I’m typing up a message.

Oh yeah. You heard me right.

I can finally type a message on a Huawei watch instead of being restricted to a few pre-programmed quick replies. It doesn’t work with every messaging app, there’s no swipe typing yet, and I also would’ve liked to see some sort of confirmation dialog every time I sent something but I love this anyway.

A few new watch faces

Huawei’s newest smartwatches come with a bunch of new watch faces too. As is tradition. There are 11 of them for the GT 5 — and two more for the GT 5 Pro — although I keep coming back to the one that mimics the famous “Windows blue screen of death” every time I review a Huawei watch. Maybe I am a nerd. I just don’t know it yet.

Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro - Watch face

I really like how Huawei made interacting with this display so fun as well. There are a couple of buttons to help me navigate across the UI, including this neat rotating crown which even has a nice, sharp haptic feedback every time I turn it up and down. How cool is that?!

I guess the GT 5’s brightness number kinda disappoints if you compare it to some of the big boys like Apple’s Watch Series 10 or the Galaxy Watch 7 but trust me. 1,200 nits is plenty bright. More than bright enough to maintain great readability when I suddenly get the urge to go on an outdoor walk on a particularly sunny day.

Software

  • HarmonyOS 5.0
  • No word on the number of software updates

Okay.

So let me talk about its software next and there’s obviously a lot to love here too. I already fangirled about that “typing” thing a little while ago, whereas Huawei’s new HarmonyOS 5.0 is also so incredibly well-designed and responsive. I know there are still no Google apps or a whole lot of other third-party apps here.

But if that’s something you don’t care about, I’m sure you’re gonna have a great time with the Watch GT 5.

This thing just feels so… smooth and responsive. The animations have gotten a lot snappier as well, the graphical elements feel richer, and Huawei also added one super important feature this time. Offline maps. Yes. I can sorta navigate through places and get my real-time position on the Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro without reaching for my phone, although I should tell you that it only works when I start an outdoor workout. Like walking, running, or cycling.

Health and fitness tracking

  • 100+ workout modes
  • Heart rate, stress, sleep monitoring
  • Huawei TruSense System

That reminds me, the GT 5 duo also has something called “Sunflower Positioning System” for better location tracking… on top of dual-band GPS. And when I took it to the streets of Kathmandu, I gotta say it did a fairly good job of pinpointing my location.

Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro - Outdoor walk
Huawei Watch GT 5 Pro – Outdoor walk

It did struggle a bit when I was walking through some particularly narrow lanes — as expected — but this is impressive stuff. And hey, in case I get lost or forget my way during a workout, I can just use the “route back” feature on the Watch GT 5 to take me back to my starting point. Exactly like on an Apple or Samsung watch.

These things are excellent fitness trackers too. I get to log over 100 different sports modes, I can customize my workout exactly how I want, it can also measure my heart rate recovery rate after I finish a workout, and there are a few features designed especially for runners. Like analyzing your running form and all sorts of running courses with different difficulty levels.

And if you’re serious about golf or underwater sports like freediving, then you might wanna pick up the GT 5 Pro over the standard GT 5. ‘Cause this guy is loaded with a bunch of golfing features and it’s good for free dives up to 40 meters as well. Both of them are fine for swimming — thanks to 5 ATM and IP69K rating — but only the Pro model gets diving-specific perks.

The Watch GT 5 series is just as good at keeping track of my overall health. And I think I’ve said this about practically every Huawei watch I’ve reviewed over the years.

What’s with the redesign?

So when I found out that these two now have completely redesigned health monitoring tech, I was a bit skeptical at first.

Huawei calls it “TruSense”, and what you need to know is that it has a redesigned sensor setup, upgraded algorithms for better accuracy, and faster data readouts to name a few. And yeah, I’ve definitely noticed how fast the GT 5 is at reading my health data. Especially in terms of SpO2 since it can now measure my blood oxygen level in just 15 seconds like on an Apple Watch.

Other than this, everything from heart rate to sleep tracking is perfectly dependable as always on the Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro. I wore it alongside Apple Watch Series 10 (review) to bed one night — and as you can see above — they both got my time to bed, the time I got up, my sleep stages, and my heart rate levels throughout the night almost the same.

Even when I went for a quick outdoor run, I was getting similar readings from them at everything. Be it my heart rate level itself, my pace, or my cadence. Aka the number of steps I take every minute. So yeah… all this is to say that the Watch GT 5 series is great at keeping me informed on my physical health.

Whereas I love how it also takes my emotional wellbeing into account by constantly observing my emotional state all day long. And looking back at the data, I’m honestly quite surprised to see how close the GT 5 got to understanding me emotionally. There’s even a separate watch face with a little baby panda to visualize how I’m feeling. How cute!

Huawei Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro review: Conclusion

I guess I’ve gone through everything there is about Huawei’s new Watch GT 5 and GT 5 Pro by now so… let’s wrap things up. And I’m sure you’ve already figured out that I absolutely love this thing, right? ‘Cause like I said in the very beginning, these two pretty much have everything I’m looking for in a proper flagship smartwatch.

Huawei Watch GT 5 - Design 1

I know its lack of Google apps sucks, and that it might even be a dealbreaker for some.

But if you’re not among that crowd and just want a reliable smartwatch with a glorious design, a top-notch display, fantastic performance, excellent battery life, and some of the best health and fitness tracking on a smartwatch, this is it. I don’t think it gets better than the Watch GT 5 series.

And between the two of them, I find it pretty easy to recommend the regular GT 5 over the GT 5 Pro for its absolute value for money. You’re compromising a little in terms of the build quality and missing out on a few health tracking features but other than that, the Huawei Watch GT 5 brings 99% of what makes the GT 5 Pro awesome at almost 50% the price. So… like Shakira’s hips, the math doesn’t lie either.

Scientists discover molecular “switch” that reverses cancer cells to healthy state

0

Scientists in South Korea have uncovered a breakthrough that could change cancer treatment. They have discovered a molecular “switch” that can reverse cancer cells to a healthy state, offering hope for less toxic treatments. This study has been published in the Advanced Science journal.  This article will discuss more about the latest discovery on the Molecular Switch that reverses cancer.

Cancer Reversing Switch Overview

Research

Molecular Cancer Switch

The team of scientists identified a critical moment before cells irreversibly transform into cancer. By targeting this transition, they were able to stop the progression of cancer. This new approach rewires cancer cells rather than eliminating them, which could reduce harmful side effects compared to traditional cancer treatments.

The  Process

Researchers conducted experiments on lab-grown mini-tumors made from colon cancer cells. During the tests, they identified a state where cells show both healthy and cancerous traits. They then focused on molecular pathways that control this transition and identified an enzyme responsible for hindering the breakdown of cancer-related proteins. By blocking this enzyme, the researchers were able to halt tumor growth and reverse the cells to a healthy state.

Expert Insights

Dr. Tiffany Troso-Sandoval noted that this method could lead to less toxic treatments compared to current therapies. Kwang-Hyun Cho, co-author of the study, emphasized that the discovery highlights crucial genetic changes in cancer development, opening new possibilities for treatment.

PUBG developer unveils new tactical shooter as PUBG: Blindspot

    0

PUBG: Blindspot, previously known as Project ARC, is the latest addition to the PUBG universe. Unlike the original PUBG, which is a large, open-world game, the PUBG: Blindspot will be a 5V5 tactical shooter. In this article, we will get into the depth of this new game.

    PUBG Blindspot: Overview

The confirmation of PUBG Blindspot comes directly from the developer’s official Discord Community. The main idea of PUBG Blindspot is that there will be a small team of 5 players each and the focus will be on strategy, teamwork, and shooting in tight, indoor spaces.

    PUBG war

The game will be played from a top-down perspective, meaning you’ll view the action from above. Players will need to think carefully and be aware, so it won’t be easy to see everything around them. This makes the game more about tactical planning and team coordination rather than just running around and shooting.

    Connections to the original PUBG

Although PUBG: Blindspot is a shift from the battle royale style of the original game, it retains some nods to its roots. One example is the inclusion of a character named Apex, alongside the iconic phrase, “Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner.” So while it’s a different style of game, it’s still part of the PUBG universe.

    PUBG Blindspot similarities to PUBG

    Testing and release date

The game has already been tested by some players in a closed beta, which is a small preview of the game to gather feedback before its official release, and it seems to be in a fairly complete stage. While the release date has not been confirmed yet, PUBG: Blindspot is expected to launch sometime between 2025 and 2026.

One more thing: because PUBG has a feature that prevents players from cheating, they might limit who can play the game, especially on devices like the Steam Deck, which is a handheld gaming device. In the past, PUBG had problems with players using cheats on certain devices, so they may restrict which platforms can play this new game.

POCO X7 Pro review: The midrange gaming king

So, let’s talk about the POCO X7 Pro today! Unlike Redmi phones, I believe its little brother POCO is on the right track. They have priced it very well and now POCO phones create the same type of hype which we used to see with Redmi phones before!

So, yeah, POCO = Redmi from 5 years ago! And after using the POCO X7 Pro alongside my current best midrange phone, the OnePlus Nord 4, there are a lot of areas where POCO just kills the Nord 4. But there are still a few things, where buying the Nord 4 makes sense for some people. Let me make it all clear in this article – it gets quite interesting!

    POCO X7 Pro 5G Specifications

    • Display: 6.67-inch OLED, 1.5K (2712 x 1220 pixels), 120Hz refresh rate, 3200 nits brightness, 1920Hz PWM dimming, 12-bit colors, HDR10+, Dolby Vision

    POCO X7 Pro Review

    Performance

    • MediaTek Dimensity 8400-Ultra

    POCO X7 Pro Performance

Ok first, let me start with the performance and here the POCO X7 Pro is just so much ahead. The Dimensity 8400 Ultra chipset is an excellent update over the Dimensity 8300 Ultra from last year, CPU-wise, GPU-wise, everything.

The Snapdragon 7+Gen 3 that we get on the OnePlus Nord 4 is also a very good chipset, but no matter which benchmark I ran, the Dimensity 8400 gives you much better results. Even my real-life test tells the same story. I was able to get a stable 60 fps in Genshin Impact in high settings and 60 fps mode whereas the OnePlus Nord 4 gave me less fps, less 5% lows and less overall smoothness.

Even playing something less demanding like PUBG for instance, the POCO X7 Pro manages an average of 118 fps with 100% smoothness. The OnePlus Nord 4 on the other hand, only manages to provide 89 average fps with less smoothness. POCO was slightly hotter by 3 to 4 degrees, but it is also pushing drastically better and stable fps, and the heating isn’t unbearable either, so it’s understandable I guess.

I also went to the extreme to see how much the POCO X7 Pro would heat and ran Antutu 5 consecutive times, shot a 4k 60 fps video in the sun for 30 minutes and the max temperature I recorded was 45 degrees. So, if you are someone who prioritizes gaming and sustained performance over everything else, the POCO X7 Pro just blows away the OnePlus Nord 4 by a lot. And keeping the gaming audience in mind, I like how POCO has also provided a flat, comfortable design, which isn’t heavy and bulky even though it has a big 6550 mAh battery.

    Battery

    • 6,550mAh with 90W fast charging

    POCO X7 Pro Performance

It’s a Silicone Carbon battery, so it occupies less space and has great endurance at the same time. It easily lasted me more than a day on normal everyday usage, like technically, it would give me around 8 hours of screen on time on heavy usage – which is fantastic. On the other hand, the OnePlus Nord 4 also sports a flat design, but because of its metal design, it’s a bit heavier, which means I found it not to be the most comfortable for longer gaming sessions.

And because of its smaller 5500mAh battery, I am getting slightly less 7 hours of backup on the Nord 4 Vs the 8 hours I got with the POCO X7 Pro! But when it comes to charging, OnePlus with its 100-watt support + smaller battery charges faster (35 minutes) while the POCO X7 Pro takes around 30 minutes (1 hour 5 minutes) more for a complete refill with its included 90-watt charger.

    Design

That said, the one thing that bugs me a little about the POCO X7 Pro is the looks! No hate, but I feel like POCO is taking the “beauty lies on the inside” phrase quite seriously and with every generation of their smartphones, their design choices are getting worse.

With the X7 Pro, you either get this leather-back finish or a plastic back if you go with the green or black color variant. This leather-back finish has a nice feel to it, but looking at how dirty my X6 Pro has gotten over time (which also is impossible to clean by the way), it’s better you go with the plastic version.

But when it comes to durability, the POCO X7 Pro is a clear winner. First off, it has Gorilla Glass 7i protection on the screen vs some unbranded tempered glass protection we get with the Nord 4. Plus, this is the first POCO phone to have proper IP69 dust and water resistance, whereas the Nord 4 only has IP65.

Besides that, both phones feature fast optical in-display fingerprint sensors, and both have IR blasters too which can come in really handy, but for some reason, they do not come with headphone jacks. I guess it’s understandable on Nord 4 because it’s not really a gaming-centric phone, but POCO should have included it, that would have made the gamer community so-so happy!

    Display

    • 6.67-inch OLED, 12-bit colors, HDR10+, Dolby Vision
    • 1.5K (2712 x 1220 pixels)
    • 120Hz refresh rate, 3200 nits brightness

Anyway, what POCO has nailed is the display side of things. You can visibly see how the X7 Pro’s display is brighter than the Nord 4 and its colours look slightly better too – thanks to it being a 12-bit display vs 10 bit on the Nord 4. Even when playing HDR videos, you can see how POCO’s display looks brighter and better. Overall, for general tasks, both screens are fantastic, but spec-wise, POCO definitely has a little edge here, POCO also does not have that Green Line issue (funny way ma), so you get the point!

    Haptics and Audio

Next, I want to talk about the haptics and speakers, both of which are slightly better on the Nord 4. OnePlus has borrowed OPPO’s O-Haptics technology here and hence, the feedback on it is tight and crisp. Now, don’t get me wrong, POCO also has an X-Axis vibration motor and feels good, but OnePlus’s feedback is just more impactful.

Same with the speakers, both phones are very comparable, but the Nord 4 just has a tiny bit better loudness and fullness to its audio. So, you could say that the “experience side of things” is something the OnePlus Nord definitely does a better job at.

    UI and Software

    • Android 15 with HyperOS 2

    UI

And that also relates highly to the software experience. Honestly, I have never been a big fan of MiUI or HyperOS.  Although Hyper OS 2.0 is somewhat more refined than before, I still so much prefer the cleaner and lightweight experience of Oxygen OS.

The Nord 4 also received the Android 15 update last month and thankfully the X7 Pro boots on Android 15 as well.  They both will receive updates till Android 18, but OnePlus also offers 2 extra years of security updates than POCO, you will also get slightly faster updates in the future, and it comes with a whole lot less bloatware apps, so yeah, software-wise, OnePlus just feels more polished and intuitive to use.

    Cameras

    • 50MP (Sony LYT-600, OIS) + 8MP ultrawide
    • 20MP (front camera)

Ok… best for the last – The cameras. And honestly, I didn’t have much expectations from POCO, since it’s not necessarily a camera-centric device and I really thought that the OnePlus Nord would crush POCO in this aspect, but I will admit, I was WRONG!

As expected POCO has sort of a punchy color reproduction, but they actually look better than the pale photos from the OnePlus Nord 4. POCO seems to have worked on the green tint issue that was there on the POCO X6 Pro. Sometimes dynamic range could be a hit or miss, but most times, the output from the POCO X6 Pro is decent, not bad!

In fact, the POCO X7 Pro does an impressive job during nighttime. The punchy color reproduction works in its favor and I have gotten some detailed images with good exposure management from this phone.

I don’t have the same praise for its ultra-wide photos though. For some reason, the ultra-wide photos have a yellow tint that just looks bad. And since it’s an 8MP sensor, the details are nothing to write home about either.

The POCO X7 Pro clicks decent portraits and selfies though. Not the kind you would want to post on social media, but not that bad either. The portraits could pass for just a story or so on Instagram and such, but nothing more.

This year, POCO has improved the videography side as well. I clearly did felt the jerkiness and wobble while walking, but, for still footage, the videos are actually good and sharp. I found both the Nord 4 and X7 Pro doing a pretty similar job here.

With the 4k 30 fps videos, the stabilization on both phones improves slightly, so I would recommend you guys to shoot in 4k 30 fps instead. From the front camera, both phones only shoot 1080p videos at 30 fps, and here POCO’s output is slightly steadier, but again the quality is just average at best on both devices.

    Pros and Cons

    Pros:

    • Better overall performance
    • Superior display quality
    • Longer battery life
    • More durable build
    • Strong main camera
    • Better value for money

    Cons:

    • Slower charging
    • Lacks premium design
    • Software has bloatware
    • Weak ultrawide camera
    • Average haptics & audio

    POCO X7 Pro Review: Conclusion

Alright, so you can see that the POCO X7 Pro just kills the Nord 4 in a lot of areas. It has better performance – its gaming results are basically unmatched in its price range. Plus, it has a better display, better build quality, a surprisingly better main camera and slightly better battery life.

This year, you can actually say that the POCO X7 Pro is an all-around device, except for the design, I think POCO still needs to work on that!

So, if you are someone who uses a case and is okay with the HyperOS experience, the POCO X7 Pro is definitely a much better value this year.

But I can understand people still going for the OnePlus Nord 4 because of the cleaner UI experience. But if you are planning to get the Nord 4 right now, Just make sure you wait for some discounts and offers.

iPhone SE 4 (2024) will come as early as next week

    1

Despite many delays and reports of being canceled, Apple is finally announcing the iPhone SE 4 next week. The phone is delayed but will feature the biggest change in the lineup so far such as an OLED display. So, in this article, let’s discuss the latest development in the iPhone SE 4 saga.

    iPhone SE 4 Rumors:

    A big design shift

Apple is no stranger to reusing designs from its older phones on the SE lineup. B As per the previous rumors, the iPhone SE 4’s display could stretch 6.1 inches with no Touch ID on the bottom, for obvious reasons, as Apple moved to FaceID a long ago. And the classic bathtub notch on top.

But now, the rumors are different. Apple will instead use a design similar to the iPhone 16 (review), including a distinctive notch. This a big shift from the iPhone 8 chassis that Apple had been using for the last two generations. Consequently, the shift from Touch ID to Face ID is imminent.

iPhone SE 4 Design and Display

So, it is also safe to say that this iPhone will also come with a USB Type-C port, although it’s expected to offer slower data transfer speed as compared to the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro series models.

    An OLED panel

And finally, we’ll get to see an OLED panel for the first time on an iPhone SE phone. It will be a 6.1-inch panel as per the latest rumors. But Apple is Apple, so, the refresh rate will likely stay at 60Hz which will be too old-fashioned for a 2025 phone.

    48MP camera

As always, the iPhone SE 4 will bear a single camera. But this time, it’s gonna be a 48MP shooter that should offer better outputs than the 12MP one on the last-gen SE.

    Apple A18

The upcoming Apple iPhone SE 4 will pack an Apple A18 chipset and 6 or 8GB of RAM. Which will bring a major performance boost over the A15 Bionic on the iPhone SE 2022.

    Apple A18 Chipset

    The rest of the features

The iPhone SE 4 is also rumored to bring an action button that might sit above the volume controls just like on the iPhone 15 Pro Series.

    iPhone SE 4 Delayed Launch

The iPhone SE lineup is home to Apple’s most affordable smartphone. And there have been two new iterations since the company dropped the first one in 2016. It was succeeded by the iPhone SE (2nd Gen) in 2020, while the third iPhone SE arrived almost two years later in 2022.

Going by this recent timeline, Apple was expected to launch the 4th gen iPhone SE in 2024. However, the company seemed to have dropped the idea altogether. The main reason for its cancelation was believed to be the lower-than-expected sales of affordable iPhones, including the iPhone SE 3, iPhone 13 mini, and iPhone 14 Plus.

In addition, the added cost of manufacturing the iPhone SE 4 was also said to have played an influential role in Apple’s decision. The reason all of the previous iPhone SEs were relatively affordable was that they all used the same old chassis. However,  the company was planning to take a new route with an all-screen panel on the fourth iPhone SE.

iPhone SE 4 Launch and Availability

The iPhone SE 4 will launch as early as February 11th. Its price is expected to be slightly higher than the current price, which stands at USD 429. We’ll continue adding more info as and when it becomes available.
