Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G review: Could have been better

So today, I have Xiaomi’s new Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G in for review. It starts at exactly 50,000 rupees here in Nepal, and considering all the competition, it doesn’t look half bad.

Not because this thing is absolutely terrific or anything, but the Nepali smartphone doesn’t have any worthy competition to it compared to the Indian market. Where you have some fantastic midrange phones like the OnePlus Nord 4 (review), Realme 14 Pro+ (review), Motorola Edge 50 Pro, or iQOO’s Neo lineup.

So should you buy the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G? Let’s find out in this review.

Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G review Specifications:

  • Design and Build: 162.53 x 74.67 x 8.75 – 8.85 mm, 205 – 210 gm, IP68 rating

Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G Review:

Design and Build

  • 162.53 x 74.67 x 8.75 – 8.85 mm, 205 – 210 gm
  • Gorilla Glass Victus 2 front, plastic frames, glass/PU leather back
  • IP68 dust/water resistant

When I first got my hands on Redmi Note 14 Pro+, I was already impressed with its design and display. The hands-on feel is also comfortable — and not to mention — the cute “Phantom Purple” color it comes with.

Redmi Note 14 Pro Plus 5G - IP68 rating

On the back, we get Gorilla Glass 7i protection while it has Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protecting the display. The Note 14 Pro+ is also IP68 rated against dust and water damage, although its Indian variant even has IP66 and IP69 ratings. It’s not really that big of a deal and overall, I think Xiaomi has done a great job with the design and build quality this time.

Display

  • 6.67-inch 1.5K HDR OLED curved screen
  • 120Hz refresh rate, 12-bit colors

Its display is equally impressive with a slight curve on the side. You’re looking at a 120Hz AMOLED screen that delivers great brightness both indoors and outdoors.

Redmi Note 14 Pro Plus 5G - Display 1

In fact, this is the phone with the brightest display in this price range. Featuring a peak brightness of 3000 nits. So whether you’re watching normal SDR videos or enjoying HDR content on YouTube, the display on the Note 14 Pro+ is a treat. Xiaomi has also paired with a great set of stereo speakers and a sharp X-axis vibration motor so yeah.

Performance

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 5G (4nm)
  • 8/12GB RAM, 256/512GB storage (non-expandable)
  • HyperOS 1.0 based on Android 14
  • 3+4 years of updates

For the performance, the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ features a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3… which honestly feels a bit underwhelming. Compared to MediaTek’s Dimensity 7200-Ultra on Note 13 Pro+, this is not a notable improvement I’d say. And the real-world performance didn’t feel much of an upgrade either.

And in terms of gaming, I played three demanding games between these two: PUBG Mobile, Genshin Impact, and Mobile Legends. The results? PUBG on the Note 13 Pro+ had an average fps of 56, while the Note 14 Pro+ pushed that to 59 fps. In Genshin Impact, the fps difference was minimal, but in Mobile Legends the older model won the battle.

Redmi Note 14 Pro Plus 5G - Gaming

So yeah, I was expecting more from this phone’s performance. Maybe it’s because older Redmi phones were performance-focused, but I’m honestly finding it difficult to digest these “downgrades” year over year. What’s even more disappointing is that the Note 14 Pro+ still boots on Android 14-based HyperOS 1.0. Effectively turning its 3+4 years of update policy into 2+4 years when you really think about it.

Cameras

  • Triple camera setup at the back
  • (200MP main, 8MP ultrawide, 2MP macro)
  • 20MP selfie camera (hole-punch cutout)

Moving on to the cameras, I’m sad to say that I don’t have much good news either. Redmi 14 Pro+ packs the same camera setup as its predecessor and I mean… why? We at least deserve an upgrade when the series gets a new version, right? It’s got the same 200MP primary camera, 8MP ultra-wide, and a 2MP macro shooter.

Its Indian variant does have a newer 50MP Sony sensor and a 2.5X telephoto lens, but I have no idea why Xiaomi decided to skip that on the global models.

It could have been considerable if at least the optimization was better, but sadly we don’t get that as well. I compared it with the Redmi Note 13 Pro+ and on most occasions, it took better-looking photos than this guy. Quite unexpected stuff.

The photos from Note 14 Pro+ have that signature boost in terms of colors and contrast. But the highlight management? Well, let’s just say it could use some work. I am crossing my fingers for an update that fixes things, although I’m not holding my breath honestly.

As for portraits, I found the Note 13 Pro+ to be doing a better job once again.

They both could use a little more polish in terms of how skin tone is handled but yeah. And it’s the same with selfies as well, so I’m just hoping a future update will fix all this.

That 8MP ultra-wide camera didn’t impress me either. Nothing special, not much details, and the colors remain, well… okayish.

Then again, Redmi Note 14 Pro+ takes great lowlight photos. Thanks to OIS. The results were sharp, punchy, and with great color rendition. Turns out you might not even need to turn on the night mode in most cases.

Videography

As for videos, that 7s Gen 3 processor on this guy doesn’t support 4K 60 fps recording. And at 4K 30 fps mode, the videos still turn out a bit shaky. Which means Xiaomi could’ve optimized the gyro-based EIS much better. The selfie videos, on the other hand, max out at 1080p 60 fps. And like the ones from the main camera, the selfie videos from Note 14 Pro+ aren’t that impressive as well.

Battery and Rest

  • 5110 mAh battery
  • 120W fast charging (120W adapted provided)

Redmi Note 14 Pro Plus 5G - Charging

Let’s talk about the one area where I won’t complain: battery life. The Redmi Note 14 Pro+ comes with a 5110 mAh battery, which lasted me about 7 hours of screen time on average. Plus, with 120W fast charging, I was able to get it to 100% in just half an hour. Not bad at all.

Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G review: Conclusion

To wrap up this review, the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ 5G is clearly a “could have been better” phone for me. It’s not that bad but there’s definitely a big room for improvement. While it offers good features like in terms of the display, design, speakers, and haptics, the software and camera side of things could’ve used some work.

So, is it worth the price? I’m kinda hesitant to say “yes”, although considering the fact that there’s really not much competition in the NPR 50,000 segment, the Redmi Note 14 Pro+ does make sense.

Understanding VoWiFi and VoLTE: What are they?

0

With the evolution of mobile networks, voice calls have moved beyond traditional cellular connections. And two key technologies, VoWiFi (Voice over Wi-Fi) and VoLTE (Voice over LTE), which might be something you might have seen a lot on the internet are now changing how we make voice calls. Let’s break down both technologies, how they work, and their impact on call quality and coverage.

Explained: VoLTE / VoLTE

What is VoWiFi?

VoWifi Calling

VoWiFi allows you to make voice calls over a Wi-Fi network rather than relying on the cellular network. This technology works by routing your voice call through your internet connection, which can be especially useful in areas with weak mobile coverage but strong Wi-Fi. What i mean is Vo Wifi is not a separate third thing, but something of specialized technology of WiFi itself.

So when you’re in a building or location where cellular reception is poor, like something of an underground area, dense buildings, or rural zones— VoWiFi ensures you don’t miss networking. In essence, a stable Wi-Fi connection is enough to make and receive calls without interruptions. In addition, the VoWiFi is also available for NTC users (altho it depends whether the device supports or not)

The Benefits of VoWiFi

  1. Call Quality: In places where cellular signals are weak, VoWiFi leverages a strong Wi-Fi connection. Hence, a much much better call clarity.
  2. Costs: VoWiFi calls use less data compared to standard cellular calls.
  3. Coverage: This technology enhances voice calling where traditional mobile networks might not reach. As said previously, through VoWiFi it is possible to establish a call connection at any zone.

What is VoLTE?

VoLTE aka or Voice over LTE, is a technology that allows voice calls to be made over a 4G LTE network, instead of older 2G or 3G networks. The major benefit here is the use of a high-speed data network, which results in better voice quality and faster call setup times compared to traditional voice calls.

VoLTE uses data packets to transmit voice, rather than using circuit-switched voice channels, which means you can use high-definition voice calls along with the data services available on 4G. Then what is the difference between LTE and VoLTE? Well, LTE is a high-speed data network designed for internet use, while VoLTE is a specialized technology that enables voice calls over the LTE network.

The Advantages of VoLTE

  1. Voice Quality: VoLTE offers crystal-clear voice calls, often referred to as HD Voice, which significantly improves your call experience.
  2. Call Connection: VoLTE helps establish quicker calls compared to legacy networks.
  3. Data Use: Unlike older networks, VoLTE allows you to use mobile data (browsing, streaming) during calls without affecting the quality of your voice connection.

Ncell and NTC’s Use of VoLTE

In Nepal, both Ncell and NTC offer 4G services, but the frequency bands they use for VoLTE are pretty different..

Ncell has recently expanded its 4G service to include Band 1 (2100 MHz), a band previously used for 3G. Now, Ncell uses Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 8 (900 MHz), and Band 1 (2100 MHz) for VoLTE calls, offering a combination of good coverage and high-speed data. Specifically, Ncell allocates 5 MHz of bandwidth from Band 1 for 4G (with 10 MHz still dedicated to 3G), 20 MHz from Band 3, and 5 MHz from Band 8, bringing a total of 30 MHz for its 4G network.

On the other hand, NTC (Nepal Telecom) uses Band 3 (1800 MHz) and Band 20 (800 MHz) for VoLTE. Band 3 offers fast speeds for urban areas, while Band 20 provides better coverage, particularly in rural and remote areas, thanks to its lower frequency.

NTC officially unveils VoWiFi in Nepal

On its 21st anniversary, Nepal Telecom has officially unveiled VoWiFi service in Nepal. Now-supported devices can make use of WiFi Calling. Despite it being officially announced today, we have been using this service for the past two years already.

Conclusion

Both VoWiFi and VoLTE have transformed how we make voice calls. VoWiFi shines in areas with poor mobile signals but good Wi-Fi, while VoLTE provides high-definition voice calls over the fast 4G LTE network.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 gets cheaper in Nepal

0

It’s that time of the year and we have the 2024 iterations of the Samsung foldable, the Galaxy Fold 6, and the Galaxy Flip 6 go official in Nepal. This article will all be about the Galaxy Flip 6 which has received some upgrades in the design, performance, and other departments. Samsung Nepal has also dropped its price. Without further ado, let’s groove right into the specs, features, and official price of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 in Nepal.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Overview:

Design

The Galaxy Z Flip 6 represents a step forward in Samsung’s foldable smartphone evolution, with a design that builds upon the successes of its predecessor. At the same time, it maintains the iconic clamshell form factor.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Design and Display

This new Flip guy has gotten some changes in terms of thickness and sturdiness. It is slimmer at just 14.9mm thickness when folded. Plus the armor aluminum frame makes it tougher than the Flip 5. Also, Samsung has included an IP48 rating this time against dust and water damage. Note that its last iteration only had the IPX8 rating. Another notable change is that the camera cutouts on the front panel match the color of the frame.

Display

The cover display on the Z Flip 6 retains the same 3.4-inch diagonal size and 60Hz refresh rate. It boasts a folder-like cutout that houses the dual camera on the top side. As for the resolution, it is a 720 x 728 display with 16M color depth.

Opening the phone gets you to the 6.7-inch main display which is a 120Hz Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel with FHD+ resolution. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Camera

The Z Flip 6 aims to impress with notable upgrades in camera technology. The main camera is now bumped to a 50MP sensor, a substantial improvement from previous models. And the 12MP Ultrawide unit is here to stay. Likewise, Samsung has provided a 2X in-sensor zoom from the primary camera while the digital zoom is up to 10X. Upfront, there is a 10MP snapper for selfies and video calls.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 Camera

In terms of videos, you are sorted with up to 4K 60fps videos from both rear and front cameras.

Processor and AI features

To no one’s surprise, Samsung foldables have always used the top-of-the-line chipsets. So, you get a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC for Galaxy here and thankfully, it’s all over the world. That means, there is no Exynos variant of the phone. And the “For Galaxy” monitor denotes extra clock speed than the regular SD 8 Gen 3. To keep things cool, Samsung has used VC cooling for the first time on a flip phone too. So, expect your Flip 6 to run cooler. Moreover, the chip is paired with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 6 AI Features

And how can Samsung forget the Galaxy AI features? The Z Flip 6 enjoys all of the Galaxy AI stuff like the Circle to Search, Generative Edit, and such from its S24 Series siblings. You can directly send messages from the cover screen with Chat Assist.

Battery and Others

Moving to the batter, the new Flip phone has finally achieved the most anticipated upgrade. It now comes with a 4000mAh cell that should offer extra hours of battery life. The charging speed is still capped at 25W though. Likewise, connectivity features include 5G, VoNR, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, GPS, NFC, and USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C port.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 receives a price cut in Nepal

0

The sixth iteration of Samsung’s foldable has gone official today in Nepal. It brings a lighter chassis and other iterative upgrades over its predecessor. And we have a new massive price drop for this phone. In this article, let’s take a look at the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, its specifications, official price in Nepal, and availability.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 Overview

An improved design and display

While it is not a design overhaul, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 brings a couple of distinctive changes. Firstly, the hinge has been redesigned alongside the internals to improve durability and fit a larger vapor chamber, and the overall dimensions have shifted to a more boxier approach.

That’s to say that the new Fold is a bit shorter (1.5mm) and wider (2.9mm) than the Fold 5. It is also lighter now weighing under 240 grams (239 grams) which is just around the mark of what regular flagships weigh.

Furthermore, the new design also makes the fold more resistant against debris and dust particles earning it an IP48 rating against the IPX8 in the Fold 5. All that’s to say, Samsung is refining things here and tweaking things there in this iteration.

Because of the design change, the outer display is also slightly larger at 6.3 inches diagonally. The aspect ratio is also not as tall at 22.1:9 now. On the inside, you are greeted by a 7.6″ Infinity Flex screen with a 20.9:18 aspect ratio. Both inner and outer displays ship with an adaptive refresh rate from 1-120Hz while only the cover display gets Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2 protection (alongside the back glass).

Performance and Software

On the performance side of things, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 features the best of Qualcomm. We are getting the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip that has been specifically optimized for Galaxy phones. On the memory end, you get to choose between 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB variants (UFS 4.0) all configured with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM.

Samsung Circle to Search

Besides that, Galaxy AI is also one of the highlights in the Z Fold. Since it’s a foldable, Samsung made sure to emphasize their innovative new features and their integration with the big screen and productivity.

You can use features like Circle to Search and Note Assist just like on the S24 series. Furthermore, One UI 6.1.1 is also optimized to take advantage of the foldable form factor for AI-based productivity. That includes features like Interpreter where two people can view translations from the cover and inner displays while Sketch transforms your sketches into gorgeous art using the power of AI. Finally, as expected, Samsung has promised a whopping 7 years of Android updates for the Z Fold 6.

Camera and Battery

There are a total of five different cameras spread out through the Z Fold 6. The rear shooters consist of a 50MP primary with OIS and 2X optical zoom, a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom, and an ultrawide. The 12MP ultrawide has an aperture of f/2.2 with a 123º field of view. On the hole punch of the cover screen is a 10MP selfie camera while another shooter is hidden behind the foldable screen on the inside.

Like with the camera setup, we don’t see any kind of improvements on the battery hardware. You are still getting a modest 4,400 mAh cell(s) with 25W fast charging, 15W wireless charging, and 4.5W reversed wireless charging.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Overview:

Flat titanium design

Samsung has been using its own “Armor Aluminum” frame in its flagship phones so far. But on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung has replaced it with a titanium alloy frame which is a heavier metal than aluminum. Just like how Apple went from stainless steel to titanium on the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max (review). Despite this, the S24 Ultra is 1 gram lighter than the S23 Ultra, weighing 233 g. Likewise, you get a built-in S-pen too.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Design and Display

Up front, Galaxy S24 Ultra sports a tall 6.8-inch Super AMOLED 2X screen. This QHD+ panel has a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz and hits up to 2600 nits of peak brightness. It gets Corning Gorilla Glass Armor protection. Interestingly enough, Samsung has gone with a completely flat display this time compared to the older models’ subtle display curvature. The phone is available in 4 colors: Black, Violet, Grey, and Yellow. As always, you get exclusive color options on Samsung’s official site: Titanium Blue, Titanium Green, and Titanium Orange.

A new 5x camera

Samsung has been using quad-rear cameras since the debut of the Galaxy S21 Ultra (review), with two of them being telephoto units providing 3x and 10x optical zoom. But this time, a new addition is here; a 5X zoom lens. Which sounds like a degrade from the 10X optical zoom camera from its predecessors. But the resolution is now bumped to 50MP from which, Samsung claims a 10X optical quality zoom.

While the 3X telephoto lens is here to stay. Other than that, the primary sensor is a 200MP shooter while the ultrawide camera is a 12MP unit. With this setup, the Galaxy S24 Ultra provides quad zooming options: 2x, 3x, 5x, and 10x. And of course, you also get the 100X zoom digitally. Upfront, there is a 12MP snapper for selfies and video calls.

Shoot video up to 8K 60 fps

In terms of videos, the S24 Ultra can shoot 8K videos at 60fps. What’s more interesting is the ability to capture 4K res videos at up to 120 fps for slow-mo videos at 4K resolution.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy

Under the hood, the Galaxy S24 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. With slightly overclocked CPU cores than the regular Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Handling the graphics is the Adreno 750 GPU. As is known, this flagship silicon supports Ray Tracing too.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Ray Tracing

With this, Samsung claims a 41% NPU, 30% GPU, and 20% CPU improvements over the 8 Gen 2. And unlike the Galaxy S24 and S24 Plus, the S24 Ultra doesn’t have an Exynos variant. Besides that, it features 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage.

Software and Galaxy AI

Software-wise, it boots on One UI 6.1 based on Android 14. The South Korean company is offering a whopping 7 years of software updates with this phone. So your Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra can run up to Android 21.

Samsung is also going big on artificial intelligence with the Galaxy S24 series. Galaxy AI includes a host of generative AI features like live call translation, circle to Google search, a dynamic lock screen, a smart keyboard, and more. Furthermore, the AI is also available for image editing. For instance, upscaling a digitally zoomed image or erasing objects and such.

Similarly, it also supports up to 15W wireless charging and 4.5W reverse wireless charging. Connectivity options include 5G, WiFi 7, GPS, NFC, Bluetooth 5.3, and a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port.
