Samsung Galaxy M14 5G Review: Is It Any Good?

I had recently published a review of Samsung’s Galaxy A24 last week, and I thought that phone was the best phone under 30 thousand rupees! But Samsung has now launched the Galaxy M14 model in the Nepali market for just around 25 thousand rupees. After testing this phone for some time, what I can say is: Please, don’t buy the Galaxy M14.

M14 is not a bad phone, but for just an additional 4 thousand rupees, you can buy the Galaxy A24, which is a much better phone. The only thing that M14 is better than A24 is that M14 supports 5G while A24 is a 4G phone.

However, considering the context of Nepal, it will still take around 2 more years for 5G to be officially available from NTC and Ncell in Nepal, and it will take even more time for 5G to be widely available. So, honestly speaking, 5G doesn’t hold much importance in Nepal. And overall, Galaxy M14 is an average offering.

Samsung Galaxy M14 5G Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 166.8 × 77.2 × 9.4mm
  • Display: 6.6″ PLS LCD, 90Hz, FHD+ resolution

Samsung Galaxy M14 Review:

Design

  • 167.7 x 78.0 x 9.1mm, 202 grams
  • Glass front, Plastic back/frames

Starting with the design, I didn’t find it particularly attractive. Samsung has provided attractive designs and color options in their A-series phones. From the 20 thousand rupees A14 to the 60 thousand rupees Galaxy A54, all A-series phones have a high-end design similar to the S23 series. But Samsung has given the M14 an outdated design. Plus, the material used on the back feels cheap.

Samsung Galaxy M14 5G Review - Design

Also, I’m pretty sure that if you use this phone without a cover, it will develop scratches on the back within a year or so and will lose its shine.

The hands-on feel is decent. The phone is not too heavy. The curved sides provide a good grip. The placement of the fingerprint scanner is also good. Although the fingerprint scanner takes a little time to read, it is accurate.

Battery and Charging

  • 6,000mAh battery
  • 25W fast charging
  • No charger in the box

The major selling point of the Galaxy M14 is its 6,000mAh battery. With a full charge, this phone can last up to 2 days with normal usage, including social media, video streaming, and light gaming. Even heavy users can easily get a day’s usage out of this phone.

Samsung Galaxy M14 5G Review Battery

For charging, Samsung has provided 25W fast charging support in this phone, which can charge the large battery from 0 to 100% in around 2 hours. However, like other Samsung phones, the charger is not included in the M14’s box. So, you will have to spend an additional 2000 rupees to buy a Samsung charger!

Display

Now, one of the main reasons why I am not recommending the Galaxy M14 5G is its display. Looking at the specs, the display may seem fine, but the brightness aspect of this phone’s display is really weak!

Samsung Galaxy M14 5G Review -Display

Under normal usage, it may not make much difference, but when you use it outside in bright sunlight, the visibility becomes really poor, especially when compared to the A24.

The display quality is decent. However, it is not an AMOLED panel, but an LCD. So, I felt that the vibrancy and black levels were lacking. In fact, the display quality of this phone is even inferior to the much cheaper Redmi Note 12!

Performance

  • Octa-core Exynos 1330 (5nm Mobile Platform)
  • 4/6/8GB RAM, 64/128GB Storage (expandable)

Likewise, in the Galaxy M14, you’ll get Samsung’s Exynos 1330 chip, which was also used in the A14 5G. Specs-wise, this chipset is quite impressive. It features a 5nm processor with two powerful Cortex-A78 CPU cores and a Mali G68 GPU. In terms of benchmarks, the Exynos 1330 outperforms the Snapdragon 685 found in the Redmi Note 12 and is on par with the Helio G99 found in the Galaxy A24.

However, just like the A14, Samsung hasn’t optimized this chipset well in the M14. Based on my experience, the M14 doesn’t provide as smooth a day-to-day experience as the A24. There are slight lags here and there.

Samsung Galaxy M14 5G Review - Gaming

Similarly, games are not well-optimized on this phone. For example, in PUBG, you can only play at up to 30 fps, and in games like COD Mobile, Mech Arena, and Critical Ops, even at higher fps, you may experience occasional frame drops. The phone’s cooling solution is not very effective either, so it tends to heat up during prolonged gaming sessions.

Software and UI

  • Android 13 with One UI Core 5.0 on top
  • 2 years of OS, 4 years of guaranteed security updates

In terms of software, the M14 runs on the latest Android 13 with One UI Core 5. Samsung’s UI is good, and there aren’t many bugs. The overall UI feels smooth, even in 90Hz mode, without noticeable stuttering.

Samsung Galaxy M14 5G Review - Casual Usage

Moreover, Samsung promises 2 years of Android updates and 4 years of security updates for the M14, which is more than what other companies typically offer in this price range.

Camera

  • Triple camera setup at the back
  • (50MP primary, 2MP portrait, 32MP macro)
  • 16MP selfie camera (notch cutout)

Samsung Galaxy M14 5G Camera Setup

In terms of the camera, the M14 performs consistently better than most Chinese brand phones. Samsung’s optimization and color science engineering are better in this regard.

So, most of the time, the photos taken with this phone turn out well, with good skin tones and dynamic range in portraits and selfies.

I compared the camera of this phone with that of the Redmi Note 12, and as you can see, the M14’s photos are slightly better most of the time.

However, the downside of the M14’s camera is that it can only record videos up to Full HD resolution, and it lacks an ultra-wide-angle camera. The low-light performance is not particularly impressive either.

Samsung Galaxy M14 Review: Conclusion

So, considering everything I’ve mentioned, if you spend just 4000 more, you can get a much better device with the Galaxy A24. With the A24, you’ll have a superior AMOLED screen with better brightness, more optimized performance, an ultra-wide-angle camera, and better low-light photography. Additionally, the A24 has a premium look and feel, and it offers 4 years of OS updates compared to the M14’s 2 years.

Therefore, even if you have a budget of around 25,000, I think the Redmi Note 12 is a better option than the M14 overall. With the Note 12, you’ll get a 120Hz AMOLED display, better performance, a nice design, and a 33W fast charger included in the box.

Samsung Galaxy M14 Review: Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • 5G on budget
  • Decent cameras
  • Great battery Life
  • Android 13 out of the box

Cons:

  • Inferior LCD screen
  • Unoptimized performance
  • No ultrawide camera
  • No charger in the box

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 5G Review: Best Phone Under Rs. 30,000 in Nepal?

In this review, I will be talking about the Redmi Note 12 5G — the latest mid-range phone from Xiaomi in Nepal. A few months ago, Xiaomi launched the 4G version of this phone, which was a great value-for-money product. However, that phone had some shortcomings, such as an average camera and the use of the Snapdragon 685 chipset, which didn’t offer the best gaming performance. Additionally, the 4G version didn’t support 5G connectivity.

With the Note 12 5G, Xiaomi has addressed these shortcomings by providing better cameras, improved performance, and, as I mentioned earlier, 5G support. Despite these upgrades, the price of the Note 12 5G is only slightly higher.

This phone is available in two variants: the 6+128GB variant, priced at around 30,000 Nepali Rupees, and the 8+256GB variant, priced at 32,000 Nepali Rupees. In my opinion, paying an additional 2,000 Nepali Rupees for 2GB of extra RAM and double the storage is a smart decision.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 5G (Global) Specifications:

  • Body: 165.88 x 76.21 x 7.98mm, 188gm, IP53 dust/water resistant
  • Display: 6.67 AMOLED DotDisplay panel, Corning Gorilla Glass 3, 1200 nits (peak), 120Hz refresh rate
  • Resolution: FHD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels), 395 PPI
  • Chipset: Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 5G (6nm Mobile Platform)
  • CPU: Octa-core (2x 2.0GHz Cortex-A78 + 6x 1.8GHz Cortex-A55)
  • GPU: Adreno 619
  • Memory: 4/6/8GB LPDDR4X RAM, 128GB UFS 2.2 storage (expandable up to 1TB)
  • Software & UI: MIUI 14 on top of Android 13
  • Rear Camera: Triple-camera;
    – 48MP, f/1.8 primary lens
    – 8MP, f/2.2 ultrawide lens
    – 2MP, f/2.4 macro sensor
    – LED flash
  • Front Camera: 13MP, f/2.45 lens (punch-hole)
  • Security: Side-mounted fingerprint sensor
  • Battery: 5000mAh with 33W charging (33W charger inside the box)
  • Color options: Ice Blue, Onyx Grey, Mint Green
  • Price in Nepal:  NPR 29,999 (6/128GB) | NPR 31,999 (8/256GB)

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 5G (Global) Review:

Okay, let’s start the video. Inside the box of this phone, besides the phone itself, you’ll find the regular Xiaomi mid-range phone accessories, including a clear case, a SIM ejector tool, paperwork, and a 33W charger. Unlike Samsung, Xiaomi hasn’t removed the charger, so there are no additional costs.

Design and Display

  • 165.88 x 76.21 x 7.98mm, 188gm
  • IP53 dust/water resistant
  • 6.67″ FHD AMOLED
  • 120Hz refresh rate. 1200 nits peak brightness

The Note 12 5G has a slightly different design compared to the 4G model. The back of the phone is slightly curved, and the camera module stands out a bit. The curved design provides a good grip, and the matte finish on the phone doesn’t attract smudges. Overall, I don’t have any major complaints about the design; it looks good and feels comfortable to hold. Xiaomi has also retained the IR blaster and headphone jack, which I’m pretty satisfied with.

Moving on to the display, things look really good. The Note 12 5G features a Samsung-made AMOLED panel, which offers vibrant colors and excellent contrast. Xiaomi has also optimized the display with a 120Hz refresh rate, providing a smooth experience while watching videos or interacting with the screen.

Redmi Note 12 5G Review - Multimedia

Performance and Software

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 (6nm)
  • Up to 8GB LPDDR4x RAM, Up to 256GB UFS 2.2
  • Android 12-based MIUI 13

In terms of performance, this phone delivers. The Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 chipset handles regular tasks well, and it’s a good option for gaming too. Games like PUBG, COD, and Mech Arena run smoothly, even in high settings. The phone’s heat management is also impressive; even during extended gaming sessions, I didn’t notice significant heating issues. I also conducted a CPU throttling test, and as you can see, the results were great, with no significant throttling even at 95%. The phone’s sustained performance is excellent.

Redmi Note 12 5G Gaming Review

However, when it comes to software, Xiaomi still has some work to do. For some strange reason, the Note 12 5G still runs on Android 12, while the 4G version comes with Android 13 out of the box. Recently, the Note 12 5G received the MIUI 14 update, but there’s no news about an Android update yet. Xiaomi hasn’t provided any official information, but it’s unlikely that this phone will receive updates beyond 2 years, which means it may not receive Android 14.

Camera

  • Triple rear camera
  • 48MP primary + 8MP ultrawide + 2MP macro
  • 8MP selfie

Redmi Note 12 5G Camera Review

Now, let’s talk about the camera. The Note 12 5G comes with a triple camera setup consisting of a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP macro sensor. In most lighting conditions, the camera of this phone captures decent photos, but it lacks the typical contrast seen in Redmi phones. Sometimes, it struggles to maintain a good dynamic range, but most of the time, it delivers satisfactory results.

In low light conditions, the camera performs well, handling exposure nicely. However, using the night mode yields better output.

The phone captures good skin tones in portraits, and while selfies may have a slightly pinkish tone, it’s not bad.

On the other hand, the 8MP ultra-wide camera is average, lacking in detail, and the main camera’s dynamic range and colors are not exceptional.

In terms of video, the phone can shoot up to 1080p at 30fps using both the front and back cameras. However, the stabilization is not particularly great, but it’s acceptable for casual video recording.

Rest of the features

  • 5000mAh battery
  • 33W fast charging

The battery life of the Redmi Note 12 5G is impressive. The 5000mAh battery easily lasts throughout the day, and the included 33W charger can fully charge the phone in about an hour. Lastly, let’s discuss the 5G capabilities of this phone. It supports a total of 12 5G bands, so if NTC/Ncell brings 5G to Nepal in the future, you’ll be able to enjoy 5G speeds on this device.

Redmi Note 12 5G Battery Review

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 5G Review: Conclusion

So, overall, the Redmi Note 12 5G is a great phone for its price of around 30,000 Nepali Rupees. Redmi has managed to offer competitive pricing compared to the Indian market, and the specifications of this phone are well-balanced.

In the 30,000 Rupees price range, there aren’t many options for a 5G phone with good overall specs. For example, the Realme 9i 5G, available within the same price range, has mediocre specs, and Samsung’s Galaxy A14 5G is not as impressive. In such a scenario, the Note 12 5G stands out as a really good option.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 5G Review: Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Trendy Design
  • 120Hz AMOLED panel
  • Reliable chipset with 5G
  • Good Battery life

Cons:

  • Single Speaker
  • Still on Android 12
