Xiaomi, the Chinese tech giant, unveiled its concept of wireless AR glass at the MWC 2023, called “Wireless AR Glass Discovery Editon”. This is the company’s first wireless AR glass with distributed computing and a retina-level adaptive display that adjusts to the lighting environment.
Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition Overview:
Lightweight design
Xiaomi has used lightweight materials such as magnesium-lithium alloy, carbon fiber, and a self-developed silicon-oxygen anode battery to make this glass as light and comfortable as possible. As a result, this thing weighs only 126 grams.
Industry-first retina-level display
Moreover, this is the first AR glass ever with a retina-level display. The PPD (Pixels Per Degree) of the Xiaomi Wireless AR Glasses is 58. For reference, at 60 PPD, the human eye cannot distinguish granularity on the screen. This Micro OLED display also has a peak brightness of 1200 nits. Additionally, this AR glass comes with electrochromic lenses that can adapt to different lighting conditions.
To achieve high-speed data connections with smartphones, Xiaomi has integrated its own high-speed interconnection buses into this glass. Powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 Platform and Xiaomi’s proprietary low-latency communication link, this AR glass achieves wireless latency as low as 3ms when communicating with a phone. Or 50ms full link latency wireless connection that’s comparable to a wired solution.
According to Xiaomi, it has analyzed thousands of head-tracking data samples with details such as the center of gravity, leg spacing, angle, nose rest, and other factors to calibrate this AR glass.
Xiaomi Wireless AR glass has a natural gesture control
As the gesture recognition area, Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass uses the joints of the user’s inner fingers. The directional is oriented from the second joint of the middle finger to the second joint of the index finger, where the second joint of the index finger represents the upward direction. This, in conjunction with the surrounding areas, forms a four-way directional key for basic movement operations.
Boasting a retina-level near-eye display for AR glasses, Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition delivers a truly immersive visual experience. Moreover, our self-developed Xiaomi AR Gesture Control empowers effortless control between virtual and real space. pic.twitter.com/EipqBWxkpW
Overall, the micro gestures on the Xiaomi AR glass enable a user to perform basic tasks like selecting and opening apps, swiping through pages, exiting an app to return to the start page, use sliding and tapping operations—all without using a smartphone for controls. However, users can also use smartphones for controls if they want to. You can check the embedded tweet above to see these gestures in action.
More app support
Moving on, users can stream a bunch of large-screen applications including TikTok and YouTube through Mi Share on this glass. And they also have the ability to position familiar apps anywhere in the viewing space and adjust their interface size using spatial gestures. But the most important thing is that the Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition can only pair with Snapdragon Spaces-ready devices like the Xiaomi 13 series, OnePlus 11, and more. Whereas the software support for this AR glass includes Snapdragon Spaces, OpenXR, and Microsoft MRTK development framework.
Xiaomi Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition Price and Availability
There’s no official word on the pricing and availability of this AR glass since this is just a concept device for now. We’ll be sure to update this article with more info once Xiaomi discloses them.
After much anticipation, Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro have made their global debut at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023. The lineup was first announced late last year in China with Leica co-branded cameras, three-dimensional speakers, and more. We have covered everything about the Pro model in a separate article. Whereas, in this article, we will go over the specifications, features, availability, and expected price of Xiaomi 13 in Nepal.
Xiaomi 13 Overview:
A redesign
To begin, the Xiaomi 13 gets a new look with a redesigned camera bump and flat side frame that gives iPhone-esque vibe. The frames in this case are made of a light aluminum alloy that has a nice shine to them. It comes in classic black and white colors, as well as a new green (3D glass) shade.
Among these, the latter is a nano-technology faux leather skin with excellent anti-dirt ability. Xiaomi says the back panel in this unit can easily be cleaned with a paper towel if there’s a stain on it.
Exclusive to China
Besides this, there’s also a Limited Edition of the Xiaomi 13, which is exclusive to China. Everything about this edition is similar to the regular model, but they come in more vibrant colorways. Specifically, there are five different color options: Flame Red, Gem Blue, Cement Ashes, Hurricane Yellow, and Jungle Green.
Limited Edition
Aside from the premium look, the device is also very portable, weighing only 189 grams and measuring 7.89mm in thickness. Likewise, the Xiaomi 13 is IP68-certified for dust and water resistance.
Display
Coming to the display, it measures 6.36 inches diagonally. As expected, this is an AMOLED panel with Full HD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 120Hz. Unlike the Pro model, it lacks LTPO technology, but it matches the 13 Pro’s peak brightness of 1900 nits.
Furthermore, because this is an E6 display, Xiaomi claims it consumes 22% less brightness than the Xiaomi 12 at the same brightness setting. Additionally, the company has provided support for practically all HDR standards, including Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR 10, and HLG.
This time, there’s a color temperature sensor onboard, which allows the phone to automatically adjust the color temperature of the screen based on the external environment. You also get an in-display fingerprint sensor for biometrics.
Now, cameras are among the biggest highlight of the Xiaomi 13. Not just because of the new design, but also because it includes Leica imaging capabilities. Here, all three rear cameras feature Leica’s professional optical lens.
The main sensor is a Sony IMX800 sensor with a 50MP, 23mm, 1/1.49″ resolution and a 7P lens that allows more light to pass through the sensor. Furthermore, the main unit has an ultra-low reflection coating and a new cycloolefin material to reduce glare. And Xiaomi has equipped it with Hyper OIS, which provides extremely stable photos and videos.
Following that is a 10MP telephoto with 3x zoom and OIS support. And an ultrawide sensor with a 12MP resolution and an aperture of f/2.2. Aside from the hardware, Leica’s imaging capabilities extend to software as well. There are four Leica picture modes that will adjust the color and tone to keep the originality of the picture. For selfies, there is a 32MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture.
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
In charge of all the things inside is Qualcomm’s latest and greatest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. This new SoC improves performance by up to 37% thanks to a new high-performance Cortex-X3 core, four Performance cores (2.8GHz), and three Efficiency cores (@2.0GHz).
The mobile silicon is accompanied by up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. Both the RAM and storage are based on new memory technology, specifically LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage, which should provide an improved multitasking experience and read/write speeds.
Moreover, since this is a high-performance smartphone, Xiaomi has included a 4642 mm2 vapor chamber cooling system to offer better thermals during heavy loads and gaming. Software-wise, the handset boots on Android 13-based MIUI 14, which was announced at the same event as the Xiaomi 13 Series.
Fueling the smartphone is a 4500mAh battery that offered a battery life of 1.37 days under Xiaomi’s standard battery life test. You can recharge the phone either with a 67W wired charger, or a 50W wireless charger. And it also supports 10W reverse charging. Via the wired medium, you can charge from 0% to 100% in 38 minutes whereas 50W wireless charging takes about 48 minutes for a full charge.
Furthermore, Xiaomi has included its own P1 and G1 Surge co-processors for effective battery management. This dual-chip strategy was first seen on the high-end 12S Ultra, and it has now made its way to the Xiaomi 13 Series’ vanilla variant. Nice!
Rest of the specs
Aside from that, the Xiaomi 13 has a three-dimensional dual speaker setup with support for Dolby Atmos and Hi-Res Audio (Wireless). The phone also offers Dolby’s head tracking feature, which, when combined with the Xiaomi Buds 4, provides an immersive experience. Similarly, the smartphone has all of the flagship connectivity options, such as dual 5G SIM, WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC.
After that, if you’re interested in the Xiaomi 13, the base 8/128GB variant will set you back EUR 999. There’s another 12/256GB option as well, but Xiaomi is yet to reveal its price. The smartphone will go on sale on March 8. We expect the price of Xiaomi 13 to start at NPR 150,000, if and when it launches in Nepal.
