Design-wise, the Honor 200 looks almost similar to its “Pro” counterpart. That being said, it comes with a curved back and a large ovular camera island. Lenovo Legion Pro 7i 2024 Review:

Pricey Dicey

The Legion Pro 7 is not an affordable machine by any means but it is priced well below what other 4090 laptops generally go for. In the context of Nepal, such high-tier laptops are once in a once-in-a-blue-moon phenomenon, so the price is a bit hard to swallow. But looking at the global picture, the Legion Pro 7 is much more digestible for its super powerful hardware.

 

The 4080 variant starts around 2.9 lakhs rupees (INR), or some 2700 dollars in the US while the 4090 model I have with me is even more expensive. But you can get these laptops at massive discounts during sales with my 4090 version going for as low as 2400 dollars (~NPR 324,000). Jumping back down from Cloud 9 though, you can make this Legion yours right now right here for just a measly five lakhs twenty-two thousand and five hundred rupees!

I have always just liked the Legion lineup looked over a lot of other gimmicky and bulky gaming laptops. They have this modern and minimal aura that makes me confident in carrying one without feeling out of place; be it my home, office, or even business meetings. And I feel exactly the same way with this Pro 7.

It’s a chunky laptop at over 2.5 kilos but it’s not as big as some other 18” giants. It’s got all the RGB I could want but the Legion looks just as good and even cleaner without them. It’s got the most powerful components packed inside but remains cool as a cucumber when I am not gaming.

That’s why I found this Legion Pro 7 to be a great candidate for my work and gaming hybrid; one that I could lug across my home and office without breaking my back (completely).

Keyboard and Trackpad

For the chassis, Lenovo has gone with an aluminum body. So I wondered why the keyboard deck was made out of plastic. I think it’s probably to keep the heat away from your fingers while gaming since my old Legion with an all-metal build got quite uncomfortable during longer gaming sessions. This time the deck hovered only around 35-40 degrees which was warm but not uncomfortably hot.

Like always, the keys themselves feel nice with good travel and bright RGB. And you get a shiny disco bar at the front too. You can customize all of these with Lenovo’s Vantage app or use the Fn (+ Space) shortcut for quick access.

Moving on, the trackpad isn’t glass-topped but Lenovo’s Mylar surface feels smooth and accurate to gestures. I also like the plenty of ports on this laptop, and everything from the hinges to the bezels is very good with no room for complaints.

Display

  • 500 nits brightness, G-SYNC, Advanced Optimus support

On that front, you are looking at a 16” 2K screen with a ridiculous 240Hz refresh rate. The IPS panel here is well-suited for gaming, with fast response times and vibrant colors. 

I didn’t notice any smearing or ghosting while playing games, and the color accuracy out of the box is excellent too. But why an IPS and not a mini LED or OLED screen you might ask?

I’d say it’s probably to keep the costs down as Lenovo is aiming to provide the best set of balanced features for gamers without jacking up the price. Their more expensive Legion 9 and competitors like the Asus Zephyrus G16 do offer better displays but they also cost an arm and a leg extra. That’s why I am quite happy with the screen on my Legion here.

Besides a good gaming experience, it gets plenty bright for both indoor and outdoor use, has good contrast for HDR videos, and I can enjoy all of my movies in crisp 1440p resolution.

Audio

The speakers are surprisingly good as well. They get loud for a pair of down-firing drivers, and there’s no distortion or tear at high volumes. If I had to nitpick, I think a little more bass could have made it sound fuller but you’ll likely be using headphones or external speakers during gaming anyways.

Webcam

Well, the webcam is nothing special here. It’s fine for your occasional meeting in a sufficiently lit room but there’s noticeable noise, struggle against light, and a washed out look overall.

Performance

So with all that out of the way, it’s finally time to talk about gaming….and let me just tell you…this guy is a BEAST. 

It will simply plow through any demanding workload or AAA title you throw at it.

So, to show you just how good it is, here are some CPU and GPU benchmarks comparing it against a typical midrange gaming laptop and Apple’s own M series chipset.

But what do benchmarks even mean right? Let’s jump into actual games to see how well the Core i9 14900HX and RTX 4090 do….

Gaming Results

In my test suite of 10 games, I played each game in 1440p and 4k resolution with maxed-out settings, and here are the results.

Starting with the lightest game on my list, Counter-Strike 2 was running very well with around 130-200 fps on maxed-out graphics (at 2k and 4k resolutions). I didn’t notice any stutter or frame drops and the 1% low values were pretty good as well.

Next up was GTA V, which looked really pretty in 4k with everything on Max settings. Similarly, I played Borderlands, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Starfield, all of which were silky smooth above 60fps at 4k. 

Some games like Cyberpunk 2077 are still VERY DEMANDING, and the Legion only managed about 40-45 frames on Ultra 4K without any kind of upscaling. You can easily push that number to 100+ FPS using DLSS and FRAME GEN, but on the flip side, super taxing features like ‘Ray Tracing’ and ‘Path Tracing’ will again bring it closer to that 60 FPS mark which is much more playable in my opinion.

I played a few other games too, Forza Horizon for the racing fans, my ol’ favorite Control, and Red Dead Redemption 2 for its movie-esque visuals.

Save your money

The gaming performance in all the titles was excellent, but you expect 80-90% of the same even with their lower-end RTX 4080 GPU. So, I think it’s a financially smarter move for most gamers to go with that variant instead; especially during sales where it can be had for several hundred dollars cheaper. I mean, the 4080 variant is 1 lakh rupees cheaper in Nepal so it’s definitely more bang for your buck deal. Scoping out a little bit, there’s substantial gain jumping from something like the RTX 4060 mobile but going from the 4080 to the 4090 isn’t all that dreamy!

Creative Workflows, 3D Stuff, an AI

Besides just gaming, you can, of course, use your laptop for productivity and creative needs as well. This Legion Pro 7 can easily render and export even the most complex of Premiere projects or After Effect compositions. Paired with the color-accurate display, it can be the best professional workstation slash gaming hybrid for the right audience.

Now, let’s quickly touch on some other important aspects like battery life, cooling solutions, and fan noise. Since both the CPU and GPU are very power-hungry and heat-generating components, I was not surprised to see the subpar battery life (<3 hours of normal use) and high temperatures. Lenovo has done a good job of keeping the temperatures in check with their vapor chamber, and liquid metal, but it can get pretty warm sometimes.

You don’t need to be worried though, as the Legion Pro 7 can easily sustain its performance without throttling thanks to a beefy cooling system.

The battery life can also be stretched by a little bit by dialing down the brightness, lowering the refresh rate, and killing the NVIDIA GPU. Using it like this also results in little to no fan noise, perfect for when you are looking to simply watch a movie or do some documentation.

The port situation is pretty good too with 4 Type-As, two Type-Cs, HDMI, Ethernet, and audio jack. The Left Type-C is a Thunderbolt 4 while the one on the back is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 with 140W PD and DP 1.4 support. The SSD here is super fast at over 7000 MB/s read and 2000 MB/s + write speeds. Paired with the 32 GB of DDR5 5600 RAM, there’s no stone left unturned when it comes to memory. Both RAM slots (2x SO-DIMM) are occupied with 16GB sticks while you get an additional M.2 slot for extra storage.

Television’s popularity has declined in recent years, as more people turn to their smartphones and laptops for entertainment and similar purposes. However, this doesn’t mean that TV purchases are a thing of the past. After all, there’s still something special about watching content on a larger screen. But when it comes to TV shopping it can be confusing because they all look like the same piece with different sizes. But there are some differences of course!

At the heart of it all, there are two major categories: LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) and OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode). LCD is like a cup of regular coffee; consistent, affordable, and does the job for most people. On the other hand, OLED is like a shot of espresso; intense, vibrant, and delivers a punch in terms of color and contrast, but comes at a higher cost. Even though I portrayed OLED as a better display, this article will focus exclusively on explaining LCD screens, diving into their technology, features, and advantages.

LED vs NanoCell vs QLED 

LED TVs

Starting off, LED TVs (Light Emitting Diode TVs) are flat-panel televisions that use LED backlighting to illuminate the LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) panel. LED TVs are the most common and least expensive type of TV in the market today. It gives you a good level of saturation and contrast ratio. Moreover, they offer better picture quality, higher brightness, and improved contrast compared to older LCDs.

However, this falls behind the more expensive QLED and NanoCell technologies which I talk about later. That being said, if you are looking for a TV with better viewing and decent saturation LED TVs are a good choice for you.

But that does not mean you have to rush into getting an LED TV right now! Let’s look at the pros and cons of LED TV over the other two options.

Why should you get an LED TV?

  • First of all, LED TVs are typically more affordable than QLED and NanoCell TVs, which makes them an attractive option if you are a budget-conscious consumer.
  • Moreover, this technology is more energy-efficient than the quantum dots used in QLED and the additional backlighting used in NanoCell, leading to lower power consumption.
  • Last but not least, LED TVs tend to be thinner and lighter, which makes them easier to mount and fit into various spaces.

LCD TVs have some disadvantages too.

Why should you not get an LED TV?

  • While LED TVs offer decent image quality, they typically don’t match the colour accuracy, brightness, or contrast of QLED or NanoCell TVs.
  • Moreover, LED TVs can have issues with colour and brightness when viewed from wide angles.
  • They also lack the enhanced features of QLED (like quantum dots for vibrant colours) and NanoCell (with its colour-boosting nanotechnology), making their picture quality less vivid and immersive.

So it’s up to you if you are getting an LED TV or not. If yes, here are a few options for you.

Mini LED TVs

Mini LED TVs are an advanced version of traditional LED TVs that use significantly smaller LEDs for backlighting. These smaller LEDs allow for more precise control over dimming zones, offering better contrast and brightness control compared to regular LED TVs. While they still use an LCD panel for image production, the improved backlighting technology gives Mini LED TVs a significant edge in terms of picture quality, especially for contrast and HDR performance.

But just like with LED TVs, it’s important to evaluate the pros and cons of Mini LED technology before making a purchase decision.

Why should you get a Mini LED TV?

  • Thanks to the smaller LEDs, Mini LED TVs can have more dimming zones, which results in better control of contrast and brighter highlights.
  • This makes them great for HDR content, giving you deeper blacks and brighter whites without the blooming effect that can be seen in traditional LED TVs.
  • Mini LED TVs sit between standard LED and premium options like NanoCell or QLED in terms of performance and price.
  • You get a noticeable upgrade in picture quality without paying the high premium that OLEDs typically command.

Why should you not get a Mini LED TV?

  • While Mini LED TVs are more affordable than NanoCell and QLED TVs, they can still be more expensive than standard LED TVs, which could make them less appealing if you’re strictly on a budget.
  • Mini LEDs do not use quantum dots or organic materials to enhance color reproduction, so while they offer better contrast, the colors can still fall short of more premium options.
  • Like traditional LED TVs, Mini LED TVs tend to have poor viewing angles, meaning the picture quality degrades when viewed from the side or at an angle.

However, Mini LEDs are not available in Nepal for now.

NanoCell TVs

Moving on, NanoCell is a type of LED TV technology developed by Life’s Good (LG) company. It uses nano-sized particles to enhance colour accuracy and improve picture quality. These particles filter and refine the colours displayed on the screen, resulting in more vibrant, true-to-life colours and better overall image clarity. It also features wide viewing angles, making it great for group viewing.

Well, all in all, NanoCell TVs can be a good choice for an average Nepali customer. But let’s check out the pros and cons of this TV.

Why should you get a NanoCell?

  • NanoCell technology offers better color reproduction than standard LED TVs by using nano-particles to filter and enhance colors.
  • Additionally, they provide more consistent colors and brightness even when viewed from an angle, unlike typical LED TVs which can look washed out.
  • Not just that, the enhanced color accuracy and improved black levels result in a more vibrant and detailed image.
  • In comparison to QLED, NanoCell TVs are generally less expensive, making them a more affordable option for high-quality displays.

Why should you not get a NanoCell TV?

  • The first thing is the money as they tend to be more expensive than standard LED TVs due to the advanced technology.
  • Also, while they have good overall picture quality, NanoCell TVs may not achieve the same peak brightness as QLED or OLED TVs.
  • Although NanoCell offers good color accuracy, QLED TVs usually have more vibrant colors.

QLED TVs

Lastly, QLED (Quantum Dot LED) TVs use quantum dots to enhance brightness, colour accuracy, and overall picture quality. These quantum dots are tiny semiconductor particles that emit different colours when exposed to light. QLEDs still rely on an LED backlight, but the quantum dot layer helps produce more vivid and accurate colors, especially in bright rooms.

Why should you get a QLED TV?

  • First thing first, QLEDs have enhanced colour reproduction thanks to quantum dots, producing richer, more vivid colors compared to standard LED TVs.
  • Furthermore, QLEDs can achieve higher brightness levels, making them more suitable for well-lit rooms.
  • With better local dimming and colour control, QLEDs provide more contrast and sharper details in dark scenes. But QLED TVs come with some drawbacks too.

Why should you not get the QLED TV?

  • QLED TVs are typically more expensive than regular LED TVs. So, if you are looking for something under the budget, I’d suggest you reconsider your choice.
  • Not just that, although improved over traditional LED, QLEDs still rely on an LED backlight, which can cause blooming and less perfect blacks compared to OLEDs or NanoCell.
  • Despite some of the faulty sides, QLED TVs are still the preferable ones for a good budget.

Final thought

Finding the right type of TV can be stressing. If you want a decent TV at an affordable price get an LED TV but if money is not the issue, you should definitely go for a QLED TV. But if you are one of the Nepali customers who prefers ‘‘sasto, balio, tikau” a TV with a NanoCell display can be a good choice.

Roaming is a feature that lets you use your own SIM card in a foreign country for phone calls, text messages, and data connections. Both telcos of our country, NTC and Ncell offer roaming services. So, in this article, we’ll compare the roaming packs of both NTC and Ncell.

NTC vs Ncell Roaming Packs

How to Activate Roaming Pack in NTC?

Before heading in, let’s first learn the process to activate the roaming service in Nepal Telecom (NTC) and Ncell.

  • Dial 14157# on your phone.
  • Select option 2 and send.

Alternatively, using the Nepal Telecom app:

  1. Open the app and go to the “Buy Packages” section.
  2. Choose “International Services” as the first option.
  3. Select “GSM Prepaid Roaming Service” as the second option.
  4. The “Roaming Activation” option will appear automatically in the third step.
  5. Click on “Buy Data Pack” to complete the activation.

For Postpaid Users of NTC

  • First and foremost, postpaid users need to have more than 5000 rupees balance in their SIM.
  • Then, you can just simply dial *1415*7# and activate the international roaming service.
  • You can also visit the nearest NTC counter with any government-authorized ID cards.

How to Activate Roaming in Ncell?

If you didn’t know Ncell’s roaming service is activated by default for other countries except for India. So, the following steps are only required if you are traveling to India.

  • You can go to your phone’s dialer and then, dial *17129# and press 1.
  • You can also use the Ncell app, go to the roaming tab, and activate the service.
