Huawei Watch GT 4 review: Midrange master

Venturing beyond budget smartwatches, I recently got my hands on the Huawei Watch GT 4. Since it was my first time using a more expensive smartwatch, the Watch GT 4 was quite a refreshing experience. In this review, I share my insights on its design, display, health-tracking features, and how it compares against the more popular ‘WearOS’ watches.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review:

Design & Build

  • Stainless Steel frame
  • 41/46 mm case
  • 37/48 gm (without strap)
  • IP68 certified, 5 ATM water-resistant

Let me start things off with what appealed to me the most. The boxier octagonal design on my 46mm variant paired with a brown leather strap exudes a traditional look different from the smartwatches I’ve tried in the past. As such, I sported the watch in all kinds of events from regular meetings to festivals without feeling out of place.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review - Design2

Whereas I think I’d be equally fond of its smaller 41mm model too that looks more ‘elegant’ with its clean, lug-free design.

Huawei also lets you pick from all kinds of strap options, so as far as design is concerned, the Watch GT 4 is easily among the best you can get in this price segment.

And as always, there’s not much compromise on the build quality either. Thanks to its stainless steel case and IP68, 5 ATM rating, the GT 4 has survived through my everyday rough and tumbles just fine.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review - IP68

Getting around the watch also feels quite familiar with the rotating crown and programmable button below.

Display

  • 1.32/1.43-inches AMOLED panel
  • Circular dial, Always on Display (AoD)
  • No protection

As for the actual display itself, it’s a large 1.43″ AMOLED panel that looks sharp, gets bright outdoors, and is quite responsive to touch as well. No complaints here.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review - Screen

Huawei’s selection of watch faces is quite generous as well. I can customize complications on a bunch of the preloaded ones or create my own. The ‘Kaleidoscope’ option really amused me with how a simple-looking image can be made so ‘artsy’ and ‘abstract’.

I must say I’m a little disappointed to see that Huawei hasn’t given any sort of protective layer on the display though. I mean I haven’t suffered from any scratches so far but I can’t tell you how it’ll hold up long term.

Health, Fitness Tracking

  • 24-hour heart rate, SpO2, Sleep, stress tracking
  • 100+ sports modes

When it comes to health and fitness tracking, Huawei has done a good job on the Watch 4. The watch features TruSeen 5.5+ tech which refers to the combination of both heart-rate monitoring hardware (the sensor) and all the software algorithms complementing it.

Huawei says that they have greatly improved heart rate readings during strenuous workouts with an enhanced AI algorithm and better sensor placement on your wrist. And compared to an oximeter, I found the watch’s reading to be precise enough.

To test its accuracy, I put it against the much pricier Samsung Galaxy Watch 6 Classic under a high-intensity interval training workout, as you can see, both of them logged my heart rate and calorie data quite closely. Impressive!

Other than this, its blood oxygen and skin temperature readings didn’t seem out of the ordinary either.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review - Skin Temp and SPO2

Sleep tracking with the updated TruSleep 3.0 algorithm is also pretty insightful. It gives an in-depth breakdown of your sleep cycle including different stages and assigns a score to understand it better.

The Watch GT 4 is supposed to monitor signs of apnea — aka abnormal breathing during sleep — too. And I’m not sure if Huawei has region-locked it or something, but I simply couldn’t find that option anywhere on my Watch GT 4.

Workouts

Moving on, the Watch GT 4 supports over 100 workout modes and Huawei also says it has upgraded location tracking with dual-band GNSS, which can receive two different signals at different frequencies for better accuracy. Like L1 and L5 signals in the case of GPS.

And although it did somewhat struggle in challenging conditions in my test, Watch GT 4’s location tracking is more than reliable for casual runners or even pro athletes.

I also like how I can export my recorded route and share it with my friends or import a GPX file of a trail to the watch, which is awesome!

The GT 4 has no problem automatically detecting a few of my workouts as well, even though it can only begin recording my route information after I confirm the workout.

New Features

Huawei has also introduced a new feature called “calorie management” but I found it to be rather tedious since you can’t log the data from the watch and have to reach out to the Huawei Health app every single time. Although I must say stats like resting and active calories burned are quite useful.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review- Calorie Management

Period tracking also supposedly works automatically using heart rate and temperature data which was not the case with its predecessor.

Software

  • Harmony OS 4.0 (Watch)
  • Huawei Health (Companion App)
  • Available for Android, HarmonyOS, iOS

Ok continuing my Huawei Watch GT 4 Review, let me talk about the software now. And right off the bat what you need to know is that Huawei’s HarmonyOS 4.0 on the Watch GT 4 is nowhere near as feature-rich or capable compared to Wear OS that you find on Samsung and Google’s smartwatches.

Third-party app support is incredibly limited, you’re also limited to sending quick replies instead of being able to type or dictate your actual message on notifications, and it doesn’t have WiFi or cellular connectivity either.

Having said that, I’d only be lying if I told you HarmonyOS is a bad operating system for a smartwatch or anything.

The UI/UX is well designed, getting around the watch feels really smooth, and Harmony OS 4.0 also brings a couple of quality-of-life improvements like “Activity Rings 2.0” where you can see your progress towards daily goals.

The Watch GT 4 supports Bluetooth phone calls too and I received no complaints about noise or poor voice pickup from any of my frequent contacts. Unfortunately, Huawei has yet to add a way to dial a number from the watch itself.

Battery Life

Okay, that brings me to battery life which has been one of the main highlights of Huawei smartwatches for a while. The thing is, while HarmonyOS doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of Wear OS, it is ridiculously more power-efficient. Pair that with the limited connectivity options onboard, then you’ve got a watch that needs very little power to run.

And with the massive 524mAh battery on my 46mm Watch GT 4, it lasted me a little over a week when I had all the features like continuous heart rate and SpO2 monitoring turned on and used GPS rather frequently.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review - charging

Whereas it went over ten days before needing a fill-up when I didn’t use navigation that often. And charging it back up takes about two hours with the wireless puck that you get inside the box.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review: Conclusion

Alright, to wrap things up now, it goes without saying that the Huawei Watch GT 4 uses a fairly familiar formula that compromises on the software side of things to deliver a great smartwatch experience with exceptional battery life.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review - Casual

Besides battery life, it’s got a great design, a nice display, and excellent health and fitness tracking abilities too. And if that’s exactly the combo you’re shopping for, then I’m sure the Watch GT 4 won’t disappoint.

I can especially recommend it to those who value staying on top of their health and wellbeing above all the “smart” features you’d typically get on a Google Wear OS-powered smartwatch. So, if you are in the market for your first smartwatch and have a budget of around NPR 30-40,000, then this is a great buy.

Do note that features like quick reply and music management don’t work with iPhones, so it may not be the best fit for iOS users.

Huawei Watch GT 4 Review: Pros & Cons

  • Appealing design and premium build
  • Reliable health and fitness tracking

Honor X9a gets a sweet price drop for winter!

1

Honor has just launched the Honor X9a in Nepal. With features like a curved AMOLED display and Snapdragon 695 chipset, it will compete with other mid-range smartphones in 2023. So, let’s take a look at what Honor has to offer with the Honor X9a 5G, as well as its official price in Nepal.

Honor X9a Overview:

Design, Display

To begin, the Honor X9a’s main selling point is its display. It has a 6.67-inch curved AMOLED display with a curvature of 45 degrees. Because curved displays are more prone to shattering, Honor provides “Deeply Reinforced Glass” protection that can withstand the stress of over 900Mpa2.

Honor X9a Design and Display

Similarly, this is a 10-bit color depth panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz and a touch sampling rate of 300Hz. There is also a 1920Hz PWM Dimming to reduce flickering in low-light situations, as well as TÜV Rheinland low blue light certification to make the display easy on the eyes.

In terms of design, the smartphone is 7.9mm thick and weighs 175 grams. The device’s back features a large central camera ring that houses a triple camera setup. It comes in Titanium Silver, Emerald Green, and Midnight Black colors.

Performance

Powering the X9a is a Snapdragon 695 chipset. It’s a pretty modest SoC with adequate performance for day-to-day use. But given that smartphones competing with Honor, such as the Realme 10 Pro+ and the Redmi Note 12 Pro / Pro+, offer a better processor, Honor should have made a better choice in this regard.

Memory-wise, you have only the option of 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. And since it doesn’t support a microSD card, there is no option for memory expansion. Whereas the RAM can be virtually expanded up to 5GB using the RAM Turbo feature. Similarly, Honor continues to ship the X9a with Android 12-based Magic UI 6.1.

Cameras

Honor X9a Cameras

On the back, there is a 64MP primary lens, as well as a 5MP ultrawide and a 2MP macro sensor. There is no OIS support, and strangely, the company hasn’t even offered an EIS stabilization. The maximum video resolution you can record from the rear camera is 1080p@30fps. For selfies, you get a 16MP sensor which again, maxes out at 1080p@30fps videos.

Rest of the specs

Besides this, the Honor X9a is stuffed with a 5100mAh battery despite having a slim body. It charges via a 40W adapter that takes less than an hour to fully charge the cell. Similarly, the biometric option includes an in-display fingerprint sensor and face recognition.

Honor X9a Specifications:

  • Display: 6.67-inches curved AMOLED, 120Hz refresh rate, 10-bit color depth
  • Resolution: Full HD+ (1080 x 2400 pixels), 20:9
  • Chipset: Snapdragon 695 (6nm Mobile platform)
  • Memory: 8GB RAM, 256GB internal storage
  • Software & UI: Magic UI 6.0 based on Android 12
  • Rear Camera: Triple;
    – 64MP primary
    – 5MP ultrawide
    – 2MP macro
  • Front Camera: 16MP (punch-hole cutout)
  • Security: Fingerprint scanner (in-display)
  • Battery: 5,100mAh, 40 wired charging
  • Colors: Titanium Silver, Emerald Green, Midnight Black

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Review:

I’ve been using these two tablets for a couple of weeks to figure that out exactly. So here, I’ll be sharing all my experiences with the Galaxy Tab S9 FE and the Xiaomi Pad 6 to help you make an informed buying decision. Let’s begin.

The Price and the Pen

Okay, even though Xiaomi has you buy a “Smart Pen” separately, its stylus combo (Pad + Stylus = ~NPR 50,000) is still more affordable than the Tab S9 FE (NPR 81,000). And the second-gen Xiaomi Smart Pen is pretty dang good if you really want a pen to go with your tablet.

But Samsung’s S Pen isn’t any less impressive either. It’s perfectly workable for taking notes, casual doodling, or even drawing sketches. I did notice a bit of input delay, although that’s so not a big deal. Whereas things like quick preview and being able to scribble on any text field instead of typing are awesome to have too.

Design and Build

  • 254.3 x 165.8 x 6.5 mm, 524 gm
  • Metallic construction, glass front
  • Separate Keyboard Folio accessory

Design-wise, both Samsung and Xiaomi have gone with a premium-feeling metal build on these tablets with flat edges and a fairly slim profile. And this is pretty much as good as it gets for a midrange tablet in terms of the build quality. The Tab S9 FE is a tad heavier (524 grams) than the Xiaomi Pad 6 (490 grams) on paper but when holding them side by side, that was quite hard to tell since Samsung has essentially nailed the weight distribution on this thing.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Review - Tab S9 Fe vs Xiaomi Pad6 (design)

The Tab S9 FE also impresses with its fingerprint sensor, IP68 dust and water resistance, and optional 5G connectivity for better peace of mind. I definitely would’ve liked to see a fingerprint reader and a cellular variant of the Pad 6, but I must say I don’t really miss not having full dust and water sealing here. And the IP53 rating on the Xiaomi Pad 6 is plenty enough to survive through minor water splashes and stuff.

Instead, it’s USB 3.2 port that enables wicked-fast data transfer and the ability to connect to a 4K external display is a much more useful design choice in my opinion. And since the Tab S9 FE still only has a USB 2.0 connection, it doesn’t even support DeX on external devices for a desktop-like experience. This is especially disappointing when you realize that the older Galaxy Tab S7 FE actually supported wireless DeX mode.

Display

  • 10.9-inches WUXGA+ TFT LCD screen
  • 90Hz refresh rate, 16:10 aspect ratio

As for the display, both these tablets feature high-res LCD panels with a tall 16:10 aspect ratio. And when looking at their spec sheet, the Xiaomi Pad 6 has some pretty obvious advantages, right? Including a sharper pixel density and a richer 10-bit color depth that’s capable of producing over a billion colors.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Review - Tab S9 Fe vs Xiaomi Pad6 (display)
Left: Galaxy Tab S9 FE, Right: Xiaomi Pad 6

All that sounds great but I didn’t find Tab S9 FE to be falling behind in terms of sharpness or color reproduction in any way either. But yes, that 144Hz refresh rate on the Xiaomi Pad 6 makes a world of difference compared to Samsung’s 90Hz screen. Trust me.

For such a big screen, 90Hz simply doesn’t feel as fast or as responsive as you’d want. Its response time is also rather slow, which means you’ll often notice pixel trails — aka ghosting — when quickly swiping through the UI or something on the Tab S9 FE. Even after dialing down the system animation to exactly half, it still can’t keep up with the fluidity of the Xiaomi Pad 6’s 144Hz display in any meaningful way.

Media Machines

And the media consumption experience is kinda… all over the place on these tablets. The Xiaomi Pad 6 is HDR-certified on Netflix but it struggles with tone-mapping for true HDR playback, while the Tab S9 FE isn’t HDR-certified on Netflix at all. One weird issue I encountered on the Tab S9 FE is that — for whatever reason — it just can’t play 4K HDR videos on YouTube. It’s most likely YouTube’s bug though since the tablet played my local 4K HDR files without much hiccup.

On that note, the quad speakers on the Xiaomi Pad 6 are a clear winner over Samsung’s dual speaker setup in my books. It gets louder and sounds more detailed and fuller as well.

Performance

  • Octa-core Exynos 1380 SoC (5nm)
  • 6/8GB RAM, 128/256GB storage (expandable)
  • Android 13 with Samsung’s One UI 5.1 on top

Alright, let’s talk performance now. And right away, I’m disappointed with Samsung here because the Galaxy Tab S9 FE uses the notorious Exynos 1380 chip that we saw on the Galaxy A54. It’s significantly more capable than Tab S7 FE’s Snapdragon 750G or Snapdragon 778G on paper but all that raw horsepower has essentially gone to waste since Samsung still hasn’t managed to get the most out of this chip even after all this time.

Whereas the Snapdragon 870 chip on the Xiaomi Pad 6 — despite its age — is arguably one of Qualcomm’s best, most well-optimized mobile processors so far. And this becomes clear as day when running benchmarks or in real-world usage itself.

I’m definitely not saying that the Tab S9 FE’s performance is absolutely trash or anything. After all, it can handle casual web scrolling, video streaming, and multi-window workflows just fine. But the occasional bits of stutter every now and then are pretty frustrating on such a relatively high-end machine. And maybe it’s because it’s the base model with just 6 gigs of RAM, I also had some apps reload on me after some time.

Gaming

Even when it comes to gaming, the Xiaomi Pad 6 is the better-optimized of the two. Literally all the games I tried like Asphalt 9, Call of Duty, PUBG, and Genshin Impact play more smoothly on the Pad 6 — that too with better graphics, cooler temperature, and all.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Review - Gaming

To give a bit more insight, lighter games like Asphalt 9 ran without any lag or stutter and didn’t heat the device much. For COD Mobile, I was able to play at Max Fps setting with no stutters at all. Being capped at High Fps for PUBG mobile was a bit underwhelming, but there were no frame drops at HD graphics quality. That being said, the tablet did start to get noticeably warm at around the 20-minute mark.

Genshin Impact does push the tablet to its limit though as it got HOT (37˚C) with noticeable dips in frame rate at certain parts.

Software

  • One UI 5.1 based on Android 13

That brings me to the software side of things. This is something where Samsung has always had an upper hand, and the way it has repurposed One UI for a large-screen device over the years definitely has its advantages. Like how the control panel so intuitively pops up depending on where I open it from, or how having multiple apps open at a time is so much easier and elegant on the Tab S9 FE.

But as I said in the very beginning, Xiaomi has seriously leveled up its software game in recent years. And after using both these tablets side by side, I feel like most people would be happy with the features and usability of MIUI for Pad just fine.

The Tab S9 FE’s taskbar — that I can access from anywhere — is extremely useful for multitasking, although Xiaomi has something similar in the form of a “persistent dock” on the Pad 6, it just ain’t as good as Samsung’s.

Moreover, you also don’t get any sort of software commitment from Xiaomi here. On the other hand, Samsung promises 4 major OS upgrades and 5 years of security updates for the Tab S9 FE. So, you can expect new features and further optimizations on the Samsung tablet which is not the case with Xiaomi’s Pad 6.

Camera

  • 8MP back, 12MP front, 4k 30 fps (front)

What’s more? Oh yeah, the cameras. The Tab S9 FE comes with an 8MP sensor at the back and a 12MP one on the front, whereas the Pad 6 has a 13MP + 8MP setup going for itself.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Review - Camera

And taking the Tab S9 FE for a spin, I found it to live up to the “tablet camera” stereotype with not a lot of detail in the shot. It’s fine for scanning documents or taking a quick shot when you don’t have your smartphone near you, but that’s about it.

However, the front camera — sitting in a landscape orientation — is pretty great for attending online classes and such. Both the Tab S9 FE and Pad 6 can even track you around the frame to keep you in focus during video calls which is neat.

Battery Life

  • 8000 mAh battery
  • 45W fast charging support
  • No Charger in the box

As for battery life, things are kinda neck-and-neck between these two. The Xiaomi Pad 6 does have a larger battery unit but it’s also fueling a power-hungry 144Hz screen and everything so all in all, I was getting around 8 hours of screen time on average here. I am giving a slight advantage to the Pad 6 in terms of charging though since Xiaomi ships a compatible 33W charger inside the box itself. Whereas you’ll need to buy a 25W or a 45W power brick separately for the Tab S9 FE.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Review: Conclusion

Okay, let’s wrap things up now. So, if you want a decent multimedia experience and something that can cruise through everyday usage and all, the Xiaomi Pad 6 is the best option out there for just Rs. 40,000. Even if you’re someone who’s gonna make the most out of a tablet by multitasking, gaming, or by pairing it with accessories like a stylus, this is clearly the way to go.

For Rs. 81,000, the Tab S9 FE doesnt posses the best value as it comes with a weak Exynos processor and a ordinary 90Hz screen. However, you can still opt for it, if you are in a Samsung ecosystem, and need 5G connectivity.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE Review: Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Premium Build, IP68 Rating
  • Stylus included in the box
  • Optimised Software
  • Decent battery backup
  • Optional 5G connectivity

Cons:

  • Not the best value for money
  • Unoptimized Exynos chip
  • Just 90Hz display
  • No Charger in the Box

AMD RDNA 2 microarchitecture

RDNA 2 microarchitecture underpins the AMD Radeon RX 6800 graphics cards. It employs the same 7nm FinFet process as its predecessor. All of the RDNA 2’s improvements, like those of the Zen 3, are the result of a new architectural design.

Even without a new manufacturing process, AMD has managed to improve performance per watt by up to 54% over the first-gen RDNA. A large part of that efficiency stems from AMD’s ability to clock the cores 30% faster without increasing power consumption.

Infinity Cache

Infinity Cache is a new feature on the RX 6000 lineup including the AMD RX 6800. It is in addition to the traditional L0, L1, and L2 cache found on the majority of graphics cards. The RX 6800 has 128MB of Infinity Cache, which is mostly intended for heavy gaming workloads. The new cache is four times denser than the legacy L2 cache and can achieve effective bandwidth of up to 1664GB/s.
