COVIDNP Nepali app launched to trace corona victims more effectively

Despite almost two months of lockdown, the spread of COVID-19 in Nepal has not slowed down. Rather, there has been a rapid increment in the number of people affected over the past few days. So, it was only natural for people to start questioning the government on how they plan on flattening the curve. Well, our government has turned towards a technological solution to track COVID-19 patients in Nepal. And that is the COVIDNP app.

COVIDNP App Overview

The COVIDNP app will be used to track and trace coronavirus in Nepal. The app is currently available in the Google Play store and will soon be available in the App store too. Moreover, along with the mobile app, a web-app has been launched too.

COVIDNP is developed in collaboration of Imark Pvt. Ltd., Pioneer Associates, and Ideal Concern. It was launched as a response to the commitment made by the prime minister last month. It is commendable that the app has been developed in less than a month. The hope is that, with the help of this app, Nepal too will be able to control the spread of the virus similar to how they did in South Korea. However, every one of us will need to use this app properly.

COVIDNP app corona nepal

How the COVIDNP App Works?

It has been really difficult for the government to identify the people who might have contracted the virus. You will be asked a series of questions and as per the answers, the user will be labeled green, yellow, or red. This division will help users identify whether they have potentially contracted the virus or not. And take the proper safety measures.

Furthermore, it will also help the government to provide medical assistance properly. While using the app and have kept your Bluetooth on, others around you will also be able to see your COVID-19 status. Thus, making it easier for them to know who around them might have the virus.

Moreover, with the increase in the spread of the virus, the spread of misinformation has increased too. The COVIDNP app has been developed to tackle this problem too. Users will get accurate information about the virus, how it spreads, and so on with the help of this app.

Using this app is certainly going to be very beneficial in tackling the current problem as the government will be able to gather data from a central source. However, only time will tell the effectiveness of the app. It will take a collective effort from both the citizens as well as the government for us to come out of this crisis safely.

Xiaomi finally launches the Mi Box 4K with HDR10 & Dolby Audio

In Xiaomi’s evergrowing lineup of connected IoT devices in India, the company has finally launched the Mi Box 4K. It is a standalone streaming device that runs an unadulterated version of Android TV out-of-the-box. A streaming box is basically a media player that lets you stream video & similar content by connecting it to the internet via an HDMI cable. Though Mi Box 4K doesn’t bring much improvement over the original Mi Box, its price makes it one of the best streaming devices available in India; competing against the current frontrunner which is Amazon’s Fire TV Stick 4K. Let’s take a look at what its key features along with the expected availability and price in Nepal.

Mi Box 4K Overview

As mentioned earlier, the Mi Box 4K doesn’t come with many hardware upgrades. Yet, the box & the remote have a different design choice.

Design

The Mi Box 4K has a uniform thickness throughout the body with a flat layout, unlike its predecessor which came with a mesa-esque design. As a result, wobbliness isn’t going to be a problem with this one. The port-placement has remained the exact same: a power delivery, USB 2.0 port, HDMI 2.0b connection, and an audio out (3.5mm + SPDIF) port. An HDMI cable comes inside the box for you to connect it to the TV and stream videos. And if you want to play something stored in your local drive, you can simply connect it to the USB port.

Mi Box 4K connectivity options

Similarly, the remote control has gone through an overhaul as well. Now with more rounded corners, Its remote has a power button, a voice-controlled Google Assistant button at the top. Below them lie the circular navigation pad, menu, home, app shortcut, and a dedicated Netflix & Amazon Prime Video button. However, the global variant has a “Live TV” button which allows you to directly go to IPTV channels after setting it up. Finally, the volume control button is located at the bottom.

Performance & Connectivity

In terms of performance, the Mi Box 4K is powered by a 2.0GHz quad-core Amlogic 64-bit CPU with Mali-450 GPU. Memory-wise, it has 8GB of eMMC storage and 2GB of DDR3 RAM. Mi Box 4K runs on the latest Android TV 9.0 (Pie) with access to over 5,000 apps and games on the Google Play Store.

Mi Box 4K Android TV

Yet, most popular apps like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, etc. come pre-installed. More importantly, it doesn’t come with any bloatware at all. Getting to wireless connectivity, it has Bluetooth 4.2 & dual-band WiFi ac (2.4/5GHz) connection.

Streaming

As the name implies, Mi Box 4K has built-in Chromecast Ultra. This allows you to wirelessly cast up to 4K UHD content from your smartphones, tablets, & laptops to the TV. Besides this, you can also mirror contents from other devices into your TV. What’s different between casting & mirroring is that while casting, you can still use your phone or other devices without interrupting the video on the TV.

Mi Box 4K screen casting

Moreover, Mi Box 4K has a “revolutionary” data saver feature which the company says allows you to stream up to 3 times the content on the same bandwidth of data. You can also set alerts on data usage in case your internet subscription has a limited priority for video streaming and you don’t want to go overboard. Additionally, the Mi Box 4K is also capable of rendering 4K HDR10 videos up to 60fps. But of course, you’ll need HDR-capable TV and HDR-enabled content.

Audio

Finally, let’s talk about audio. It supports Dolby Audio, which is a little inferior to Dolby Atmos; therefore, it is more suitable for someone with a starter audio system. On top of this, it also supports DTS 2.0 + Digital Out surround sound.

Dolby Audio, DTS 2.0

For this, you will need an audio output device with DTS support because TVs are only capable of accepting DTS-encoded digital audio. To process it, the TV passes the signal along to a digital audio receiver or a home theater system with DTS support.

True wireless earbuds are in the trend and they have been for quite some time now. A couple of days ago we saw Huawei launch its new FreeBuds 3i. And it seems like a cheap alternative for the AirPods Pro. Now, Sony, a leading manufacturer of headphones and similar audio products, has come up with a new addition to its TWS earbuds. The company has launched the Sony WF-SP800N, a sort of a mid-range earbud. It comes with ANC, long battery life, and more. The new Sony WF-SP800N is a true wireless (TWS) earbud with an in-ear design. It has adjustable arc support that helps the earbud to stay put in your ears. If it weren’t for the arc support, there’s a high chance that you might confuse it with the WF-1000XM3.

Moreover, this earbud is also a part of Sony’s Extra Bass audio series. Furthermore, it also has an Adaptive Sound Control which helps to adjust the ambient sounds automatically as per your surrounding. It contains separate profiles for running, walking, and commute. Moreover, the Sony WF-SP800N boasts active noise cancellation (ANC), IP55 water and dust resistance and touch controls. For configurations of the audio output, you can pair it with your smartphone using the Sony Headphone Connect app. It uses Bluetooth 5.0 for connection.

Sony is all-in for 360 Reality Audio, though, it is not available across all of its devices. But you’re in luck if you purchase the WF-SP800N, as it is compatible with immersive audio technology. However, a subscription with a streaming service that offers this feature is necessary.

As mentioned above, it is in the battery department where the Sony WF-SP800N excels. It offers 9 hours of battery life with ANC and 13 hours without it. And the case adds an extra 9/13 hours of battery life (depends upon ANC). Furthermore, it supports a 10-minute quick charge that offers 1-hour battery life. However, there’s no support for wireless charging.

AMD announces Ryzen Pro 4000 processors for business laptops

2

After being dominated by Intel in the market for years, AMD is finally back. The Ryzen and Threadripper desktops processors have turned out to be a massive success for the company, and its Ryzen mobile series is also getting recognition. But AMD is not done yet. After taking on the consumer market, AMD is now ready to take on Intel in the commercial market as well. The company claims that the new AMD Ryzen Pro 4000 series processors are the new standard for the PC experience, ahead of Intel’s VPRO series.

AMD Ryzen Pro 4000 Series Overview

Compared to an average Joe, a business needs to have a more productive, durable, and secure computing device. Of course, these might be qualities that everyone would want on their personal computer, but many of us can don’t need them. For example, not having a separate security mechanism such as the TPM chip may not be a significant deal-breaker for individuals. Still, from a business point of view, the difference it creates can be enormous.

That is why both AMD and Intel have their lineup of processors targetted at businesses. In this post, we are talking about the new Ryzen Pro 4000 series of processes. In a nutshell, the latest processors are based on 7nm process technology and are equipped with up to eight Zen 2 cores. Compared to their non-commercial siblings, these processors make use of AMD Pro technologies and come with added layers of security.

Three new processors

There are three processors under the Ryzen Pro 4000 series – Ryzen 3 Pro, Ryzen 5 Pro, Ryzen 7 Pro. All of them have a TDP of 15 Watt.

The Ryzen 7 Pro 4750U has 8 cores and 16 threads. The cores run at a base frequency of 1.7 GHz which can reach up to 4.1 GHz when boosted. It comes with Vega 7 GPU unit that operates at 1.6 GHz.

Ryzen 5 Pro 4650U has 6 cores and 12 threads. The base frequency is 2.1 GHz, which can be boosted up to 4 GHz. It has a Vega 6 GPU. Both Ryzen 5 and Ryzen 7 have an L3 cache size of 8MB. Similarly, the Ryzen 3 Pro 4450U comes with 4 cores and 8 threads.

Microsoft Surface Book 3 launched: the revamp that we’ve been waiting for!

0

It took almost two and a half years, but we finally have the revamped Microsoft Surface Book 3. The most powerful laptop from Microsoft was launched alongside the Surface Go 2 yesterday. Design-wise nothing much has changed, however, the internals come with a lot of improvements. Some major upgrades in the Microsoft Surface Book 3 include Nvidia discrete graphics, 10th Gen Intel processor, and more. So, let’s see the detailed specifications along with the expected price of Microsoft Surface Book 3 in Nepal.

Microsoft Surface Book 3 Overview

The Surface laptops are targeted specifically for creators and designers. And the current setup is no different. One can configure their surface book with the Nvidia Quadro RTX 300 for extra GPU power. For professionals working with 3D objects and CAD designs, this setup helps to significantly reduces the render time. Let’s dive further in what the Microsoft Surface Book 3 is all about.

Design

As mentioned above, design-wise nothing much has changed from the previous iteration of the Surface Books. The current laptop retains the silver color scheme and the fulcrum hinge. This hinge has been a distinctive feature of the Surface Books and it helps in safely connecting the tablet and the keyboard. However, this also prevents the laptop from closing flat.

surface book 3 fulcrum hinge

Two models of the Surface Book 3 will be available for buyers. One with a 13.5-inch screen with 3000 x 2000 pixels resolution and another with a 15-inch screen with 3240 x 2160 pixels resolution. They both come with the PixelSense touch screen which we had seen the Surface Book 2.

Sticking to the touch screen feature, the current Surface Book supports 10-point touch tracking. That means, its screen supports touch from all the fingers of your hand. Moreover, it also supports Surface Pen and Surface Dial. However, they need to be bought separately.

Processor and Graphics

Under the hood is where the magic happens in the Surface Book 3. The laptop is configure with the 10th Gen Intel Ice Lake processor. For the 13.5-inch model, you can choose between a Core i5 (base) model or Core i7 (higher-end) model. However, with the 15-inch model, you have a single option with Core i7. Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 launched: Better, yet cheaper than the original!

Microsoft has unveiled the new Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 – the successor to the original Surface Headphones. Even after two years of its launch, Microsoft doesn’t feel like the original Surface Headphones need much tuning; that is why there isn’t much that separates the two. If you loved its predecessor, Surface Headphones 2 is a better value for money, given that it comes with a few massive upgrades and a cheaper price tag. Nonetheless, let’s comprehend more about the Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 along with its price and availability in Nepal right now.

Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 Overview

Design and Build

If we neglect the colors for a moment, the Surface Headphones and Surface Headphones look the same. Microsoft’s latest over-the-ear headphone comes with a new color option – Matte Black but that about it. Surface Headphones 2’s earcups are made up of memory foam and a sturdy arc holding everything in place. The cups are now cable of 180-degree rotations. Microsoft has included dials on both the right and left side that users can use to control volume and noise cancellation, respectively.

Performance and Connectivity

Surface Headphones 2 features the 40mm Free Edge sound driver. Though the sound driver is the same as in its predecessor, Microsoft claims Surface Headphones 2 possesses better sound quality. It comes with 13 levels of Active Noise Cancellation that you can adjust using the dial on the left ear. The company claims that the ANC has been specifically optimized for the human voice and that it can “drown out your family while working from home.

Surface Headphones 2 does come with a 3.5mm headphone jack as well, but it also comes with Bluetooth support in case you want to go wireless. The Bluetooth technology has been upgraded to version 5.0. Microsoft has turned to Qualcomm’s aptX codec, which is much more effective at reducing latency than the standard SBC codec in the Surface Headphones.

Controls and Microsoft Perks

With the Surface Headphones 2, you won’t be short of control options. The power and the mute button are situated on the right side alongside the volume dial. The left side is reserved for the ANC dial. There are touch interfaces on both sides. Audio on the headphone also pauses when taken off and resumes when putting it back on.

You can use the dual mic set up for voice control, which is more useful while working with Microsoft 365. Users will be able to use voice dictation in Word and even control the slides in Powerpoint with Surface Headphones 2.

Battery Life

Microsoft Surface Headphones 2 comes with an upgraded battery life of about 20 hours compared to 15 hours in its predecessor. Microsoft says that the headphones can achieve the number over Bluetooth transmission and with ANC turned on. So theoretically, we can expect to squeeze out a few extra hours with ANC turned off. A USB cable is included in the box, that can charge the headphones entirely in 2 hours. If you are in a hurry and don’t want to wait, a 5-min charge can add about an hour of playback time.
