Asus announced the Zephyrus S17 with an RTX 20-series GPU in 2019. And now, the company has upgraded it with the new RTX 30-series GPU, a rising keyboard mechanism, and Intel’s Tiger Lake-H CPU. Neural implant allows paralyzed individual to type at the speed of an average smartphone user

A few months ago, a video of a chimpanzee playing MindPong via neural implants went viral. The video came from Elon Musk’s startup Neuralink. Many of us wondered how it’s even possible. But now, we have a successful demonstration of people communicating via neural implants. In a recent experiment, a paralyzed individual managed to type as fast as an average smartphone user via implants. Today, we will be talking about the tech behind this “typing with neural implants”.

Introduction to Brain-Computer Interface

If you’ve been following the topic about brain/neural implants, you might have come across the term Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). In simple terms, BCI refers to the communication interface or pathway through which electrical signals from the brain (neural signals) are transferred directly to an external device.

The first paper on BCI came in the 70s but there have been accounts of similar experiments ever since the discovery of neural signals. With the advent of machine learning technology in recent times, we are finally tapping into the potentials of BCI.

As mentioned earlier, Neuralink is pushing it as a communication tool. Facebook is also working on an AI input for its AR glasses that works by detecting the neural signal moving from the user’s wrist to hand. Here, we will be focusing on the former.

Typing with Neural Implants

In a bid to restore easy communication for differently-abled people, researchers have taken a number of approaches. This includes using robots for hand movements and “point-and-click” typing using a computer cursor. The former is quite expensive for implementation while the latter is a slow and tedious process because users need to constantly be aware of the position of the cursor (“point”) and perform “click” at the right moment.

Neural Implants allows paralyzed individual to type faster

Researchers at Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) pointed out that using dexterous behavior such as handwriting would result in more rapid communication. And that’s the case here. The 90 characters per minute speed is better than the “point-and-click” method’s 40 characters per minute.

So how does it work?

The process of writing something starts in our brain. First, our brain decides on what we plan to write. Then the motor cortex translates this decision into electrical signals for muscles on our hands. Researchers have developed a BCI (neural implants) that decodes the characters from the electric signal and converts them into text. This “typing with neural implants” is accomplished in real-time using a recurrent neural network decoding approach.

Details of the experiment

To test their new BCI system, researchers placed neural implants on a brain of a paralyzed individual. He imagined writing on paper using a pen. The implants successfully detected and decoded neural activity. Researchers recorded 90 characters in a span of 60 seconds with 94.1% raw accuracy.

Similarly, with an autocorrect in place, they managed offline accuracy of 99%. This number is close to the average speed of 115 characters per minute for the age group of the participant.

Is it market-ready yet?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. The neural implants tend to change their behavior resulting in larger errors over time. This could be because of the signals they decode or the tissues that grow on them, or both. Thus, they require recalibration once a week just to get the above-mentioned speed and accuracy.

Also, the system was tested on a single individual. To make it market-ready, it needs to go through large-scale testing to prove that it’s clinically safe. Still, “typing with neural implants” is a positive step towards restoring communication among differently-abled individuals.

Xiaomi has finally launched the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max in Nepal. Interestingly, the company has brought the global variant of the phone which goes by Redmi Note 10 Pro. It brings a 120Hz AMOLED display and a 108MP camera for the mid-range masses. Let’s learn more about the Redmi Note 10 Pro (Max) along with its full specs, official price, and availability in Nepal.

Design and Display

The new Redmi Note 10 Pro (Max) sports an all-new design. Since the Redmi Note 7 series, the company was using the Aura design. However, this time, the Redmi is referring to its new design language as “Evol”. There are 3 color options to choose from: Vintage Bronze, Glacial Blue, and Dark Night.

Likewise, it is also relatively thin at 8.2mm and weighs 194gms. The display is protected by a Gorilla Glass 5, although Xiaomi hasn’t mentioned what material they have used on the back. As expected, the phone comes with a splash-resistant build.

Moving on, the front of the display sports a flat panel. But the biggest improvement has to be in the display quality front on the Note 10 Pro (Max). It comes with a 6.67-inch FullHD+ AMOLED display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate. Both AMOLED screen and a higher refresh rate are a first for the Redmi Note series.

The company claims it has 1200nits of brightness with a 100% DCI-P3 color gamut. Furthermore, the display supports HDR10. At the back, Redmi has opted for a new camera bump design. The new rectangular camera bump is now on the left side of the rear panel.

Cameras

As for the cameras, the Redmi Note 10 Pro (Max) features a 108MP primary camera. It’s a Samsung ISOCELL HM2 sensor with 9-in-1 pixel binning resulting in 12MP images that we’ve seen in other Xiaomi phones like the Mi 10i. In addition to the primary camera, it has an 8MP ultra-wide sensor, a 5MP macro sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor.

On the selfie front, there’s a new and improved 16MP lens located at the center-lying punch hole. Xiaomi says they have made the notch smaller which now measures just 2.96mm in diameter.

Redmi has partnered with Qualcomm for the processor in the Note 10 devices. The Note 10 Pro (Max) is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 732G, which the same chipset powering the Poco X3. It is still an upgrade over the Snapdragon 720G that was used in the Redmi Note 9 Pro Max. As far as memory goes, you get up to 8GB of DDR4X RAM and up to 128GB of onboard UFS 2.2 storage.

Xiaomi offers a wide variety of IoT products including wireless earbuds. The company has expanded its portfolio of TWS earbuds with the launch of the FlipBuds series in China. FlipBuds Pro is the first model in this lineup. So, let’s look at the all features and specs of Xiaomi FlipBuds Pro alongside its expected price in Nepal.

Design

Starting with the design, FlipBuds Pro gets its inspiration from Apple’s AirPods Pro. Although the product as a whole is not comparable, the typical short stem shape with a curved body is identical to Apple’s alternative.

This high-gloss all-black body sets it apart from the competition. Furthermore, the charging case is more rounded here. According to Xiaomi, the premium appearance is due to the nano NCVM coating.

Audio

In terms of sound, these buds include Qualcomm’s QCC5151 audio chip. Three-modes Noise Cancellation

Xiaomi promises an incredible level of noise cancellation on the FlipBuds Pro. By the way, it is the company’s first TWS earbuds with ANC. It has three ANC modes and can filter up to 40 decibels of noise.

Depending on your ambient setting, one can choose between daily, office, and travel noise cancellation modes. To trigger them, go to the MIUI pop-up settings menu (on Xiaomi phones) or the XiaoAI app (on other Android phones).

Alongside ZenFone 8, Asus launched the ZenFone 8 Flip with its iconic rotating camera module. It shares some specifications with the ZenFone 8 and some with the ZenFone 7. So, let’s take a look at the specifications, features, and expected price of the Asus ZenFone 8 Flip in Nepal.

Design and Display

ZenFone 8 Flip features a 6.67-inch AMOLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate. It boasts a 92% screen-to-body ratio thanks to the clean-cut layout void of any notch or punch-hole cutout. Similarly, this display has HDR10+ certification and can reach a peak brightness of 1000 nits. For protection, Asus has used Gorilla Glass 6 on the front. Furthermore, it packs a bigger 5,000mAh battery with 30W wired charging, 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM, and 256GB of UFS3.1 storage. However, it does not have an IP rating. On the software front, it is driven by Android 11 with ZenUI 8 on top.

Camera

The main draw of ZenFone 8 Flip, of course, is its rotating camera array. However, it borrows the ZenFone 7’s identical triple-camera configuration. This includes a 64MP f/1.8 Sony IMX686 primary sensor, a 12MP f/2.2 Sony IMX363 ultra-wide lens, and an 8MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom.

Because of the motorized mechanism of these cameras, the ZenFone 8 Flip doesn’t have a dedicated front-facing camera. It’s a cool concept to be able to use the rear camera scope for selfies because it allows for better selfies and other fun camera modes.

Infinix Note 10 Pro and Note 10 Pro NFC are the relatively premium offerings in the company’s new Note 10 series. These two offer the same set of specs but only the latter has NFC connectivity. Let’s learn more about the Infinix Note 10 Pro (NFC) along with its specs, features, and expected price in Nepal.

Display and Design

Infinix Note 10 features a 6.95-inch FHD+ IPS LCD panel. The company has included support for a 90Hz refresh rate and a 180Hz touch sampling rate. This display has a center-aligned cutout for the selfie camera. The contrast and screen-to-body ratio are listed at 1500:1 and 91%, respectively. It is also TÜV Rheinland certified for low blue light emission.

Performance and Memory

The graphics are handled by Mali-G76 MC4 GPU (@900MHz). Compared to Infinix Note 8, the company claims that Helio G95 results in a 25.8% and 120.8% boost in CPU and GPU performance, respectively.

Users can choose between 6GB or 8GB RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of UFS 2.2 internal storage. The latter’s performance is further boosted by Write Booster technology.

Camera

This time around, there are some changes made to the camera setup. For instance, it’s the first time Infinix has included an ultrawide camera in its Note series of smartphones. The 8MP ultrawide sensor has a 120˚ Field of View and it also doubles as a macro sensor.

Similarly, the 64MP primary camera is a 1/1.7” sensor which is the biggest yet on an Infinix Note device. The larger sensor means it can capture more light resulting in brighter images. It is also capable of recording 4K videos at 30fps.

Asus has engineered the ZenFone 8 to be a compact flagship smartphone. On the other hand, the company has made no significant compromise with the device. It has a 5.9-inch Samsung AMOLED display with a 20:9 aspect ratio, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a peak brightness of 1100 nits.

It weighs just 169g and measures 8.9mm in thickness. The panel brags Delta-E<1, is HDR 10+ certified, and covers a 151.9% sRGB color gamut. Furthermore, the screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus and supports glove touch.

In terms of design, the rear panel features a camera hump, an Asus ZenFone branding, and nothing more. The frame is made of matte aluminum, and the back is coated with anti-glare matte frosted glass.

Performance

ZenFone 8 is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 888 processor. The phone is available with up to 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 256GB of USF 3.1 storage. There’s also a 64GB storage option that uses a comparatively slower UFS 2.1 protocol instead.

In terms of software, it runs on Android 11 with ZenUI 8 on top, and Asus has sought to enhance the user experience with a plethora of built-in customizations. ZenFone 8 is also IP68 certified for dust and water resistance.

Camera

The phone has a dual-camera setup at the back led by a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor with OIS, which clicks at 16MP shots by default using Quad Bayer technology. Similarly, the secondary camera is a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor with a 112 Field of view (FoV). It also doubles as a macro sensor with a 4CM focus distance.

On the front, there’s a 12MP Sony IMX663 sensor inside a punch-hole cutout on the top left corner. Moreover, the phone can record videos at up to 8K UHD resolution at 24 fps from the main camera. Dell updates its 17″ XPS with the “highest performance” mobile processor

Last year, Dell re-introduced the 17-inch XPS to go alongside the much-loved XPS 15 and XPS 13. A year later, the XPS 17 9700 has its successor. The 2021 iteration of the XPS 17 comes with the latest CPUs and GPUs along with a better cooling solution and a better screen. Here, we will be discussing the key specs of the new Dell XPS 17 9710 along with its expected price in Nepal.

Dell XPS 17 9710 Overview:

Display and Display

As expected, Dell has not introduced many changes regarding the aesthetics of the device. Its chassis is carved out of a single block of aluminum and arrives in two colors. The Platinum Silver variant comes with a CNC-machined aluminum while on the other hand, you get carbon fiber composite palm with the black color option.

All these CPUs feature Intel UHD graphics. But for people wanting more power, Dell is offering XPS 17 with RTX 3050 and 3060 graphics as well. You can configure the Dell XPS 17 9710 with up to 64GB of DDR4 RAM and 4TB PCIe SSD.

Keyboard, TouchPad, and Audio

This laptop comes with a full-sized backlit chiclet keyboard. Each key has a 1.3mm travel distance. The power button has a fingerprint sensor integrated into it. It supports Windows Hello authentication. There is also a glass-surface precision touchpad.

For audio, it has a quad-speaker setup which consists of two woofers (2.5W) and two tweeters (1.5W). Together, they contribute to an 8W total peak output. Lenovo has refreshed its Legion lineup of gaming laptops with Intel’s latest 11th-gen Tiger Lake-H processors. Legion 5i is the cheapest of the bunch and the only one to have an option with two display sizes. Here, we will be discussing the official specifications and key features of the Lenovo Legion 5i (2021) along with its expected price in Nepal.

Lenovo Legion 5i (2021) Overview:

Design and Display

Like I mentioned earlier, the Legion 5i comes in two display sizes – 15” and 17”. The latter comes with a 17.3” FHD panel with either a 60Hz refresh rate or a 144Hz Dolby Vision-enabled screen.

On the other hand, the 15.6” model offers more display options starting with a standard FHD panel to up to 165Hz WQHD screen with 100% sRGB, Dolby Vision, and G-SYNC compatibility. The third option offers the same specs but with an FHD resolution. Lastly, there is a 120Hz variant without any of the bells and whistles like Dolby Vision.

As expected, the 17” model is heavier than the 15” counterpart. The former comes in Phantom Black color while the latter has an additional Stingray White option.

Performance and Memory

Lenovo Legion 5i is powered by the latest 11th-gen Intel Tiger Lake-H Core i7 CPUs. Users can make a choice between Core i7-11400H and Core i7-11800H processor while there are multiple GPU options—all from the NVIDIA RTX 30 series. The most premium model packs RTX 3070 with 130W maximum power.

MSI has announced a bunch of new laptops following Intel’s announcement of the new Tiger Lake-H mobile gaming CPUs. On that note, we have a 2021 refresh of the MSI Creator 17 too. So, let’s walk through the specs, features, availability, and expected price of MSI Creator 17 in Nepal.

MSI Creator 17 Overview:

Display

The all-new Creator 17 is a refreshed version of its 2020 edition, which was the world’s first laptop with a mini LED display. Likewise, the new Creator 17 has a 17.3-inch UHD (3,840 x 2,160) mini LED screen with a 60Hz refresh rate. On the GPU front, you have three Nvidia cards to pick from. It is available with RTX 3080 (16GB GDDR6), RTX 3070 (8GB GDDR6), or RTX 3060 (6GB GDDR6).
