Is Li-Fi technology on its way to dominate over Wi-Fi?

      2

Li-Fi, short for Light Fidelity, is an inventive communication technology that has the potential to transform our wireless internet experience. Li-Fi is not meant to replace Wi-Fi but to work alongside it. It provides an extra way for devices to connect and offers better security using light instead of radio waves. This article explores the working principle of Li-Fi, its characteristics, as well as its potential impact on various industries and everyday life.

      Li-Fi Overview:

LiFi (Light Fidelity) is a wireless optical networking technology that uses infrared light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to transfer data. It is a high-speed and secure communication solution that can be used in a variety of applications, i.e., internet access, phone-to-phone or phone-to-TV communications, extended or mixed reality, industrial automation, and more.

      Working Principle

The working principle of LiFi is based on the principle of Visible Light Communication (VLC). VLC is a technology that uses light to transmit data. In LiFi, the light source is an LED. The LED is switched on and off very quickly, which creates a stream of light pulses. These light pulses can be used to encode data.

To receive the data transmitted through Li-Fi, a special receiver called a photodiode is used. The photodiode detects the light pulses and converts them back into electronic signals, which can be understood and processed by devices like smartphones or computers. This signal can then be decoded and used to transmit data.

      Li-Fi-working-principle

      More capable than WIFI?

Li-Fi has the potential to offer higher data rates than traditional Wi-Fi. While Wi-Fi operates with radio frequency, Li-Fi utilizes visible light, which has a much larger bandwidth. LiFi can provide speeds up to 100 Gbps, which is much faster than Wi-Fi.

Li-Fi may excel in environments where high-speed, secure, and localized wireless communication is required, such as in certain industrial settings, hospitals, and more. Wi-Fi, on the other hand, provides broader coverage and compatibility with a wide range of devices, making it suitable for general internet access in homes, offices, and public spaces.

So, it will be difficult to declare one technology as universally more capable than the other.

      Advantages of Li-Fi over Wi-Fi

      • Higher data rates: LiFi can provide data rates up to 100 Gbps, which is much faster than Wi-Fi.
      • More secure: LiFi is more secure than Wi-Fi, as it is difficult to intercept light signals.
      • More efficient: LiFi is more efficient than Wi-Fi, as it only uses light when data is being transmitted.
      • Can be used in areas where radio waves are not allowed: LiFi can be used in areas where radio waves are not allowed, such as hospitals and airplanes.

      Disadvantages of Li-Fi

      • Limited range: LiFi has a limited range, as light cannot penetrate walls or other opaque objects.
      • Affected by environmental factors: LiFi can be affected by environmental factors, such as sunlight and dust.
      • Requires new infrastructure: LiFi requires new infrastructure, as it is incompatible with existing Wi-Fi infrastructure.
      • More expensive: LiFi is currently more expensive than Wi-Fi.
      • Not as widely available: LiFi is not as widely available as Wi-Fi.

When will the Li-Fi be available easily?

Currently, some manufacturers offer Li-Fi devices and routers for small applications, but there is a growing interest in developing devices that support both Li-Fi and Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi/Li-Fi combination routers are expected to provide enhanced performance. The new IEEE 802.11bb standard has officially recognized light as a physical layer for data transmission, paving the way for more Li-Fi devices. The first Li-Fi routers are expected to be released by the end of 2023.

Samsung’s 3nm nodes might be superior than that of TSMC

        2

While Samsung Foundry has not been able to catch up to its rival TSMC in terms of manufacturing yield and thermal efficiency for the past couple of generations, it looks like things are about to change with the upcoming 3nm nodes. Let’s learn more.

        Samsung vs TSMC 3nm Foundry

As per KMIB News, TSMC is reportedly struggling with 3nm nodes with the yield from the Taiwanese foundry stated to stand at 55%. On the other hand, Samsung is doing quite well with a 60% yield. In case you didn’t know, a foundry’s production yield refers to the number of chips usable from a semiconductor wafer. So a higher yield means higher productivity and better cost efficiency.

TSMC is likely using the N3B node (first generation) but with a FinFET design while Samsung has gone with a newer GAAFET technology. The latter provides a larger drive current, and that could be one of the reasons behind Samsung’s yield gains.

        Samsung 3nm Foundry
        Samsung Foundry Factory

Meanwhile, TSMC and Intel will reportedly use GAAFET tech on their 2nm chips only, which should be arriving by 2025. With Samsung’s 3nm foundry creating some woes for TSMC, AMD is also expected to go with Samsung’s nodes in some sections for its upcoming AI and data center-focused chips. Whereas NVIDIA and Qualcomm are expected to go with Samsung Foundry for their 3nm chips too.

        Not over yet for TSMC…

But TSMC’s 3nm business isn’t over just yet as most of its 3nm production capacity has already been booked by Apple for its upcoming chips including M3 and A17 Bionic.

Samsung vs TSMC 3nm Foundry: What’s next?

Needless to say, the competition is getting fierce in the semiconductor manufacturing world. And Samsung is likely to secure the top spot for its 3nm nodes. But as aforementioned, that doesn’t mean that TSMC is going to lag behind completely. After all, we have plenty of time to see the real-world performance and thermal efficiency of Samsung and TSMC-made 3nm chips.

Apple is exploring rollable display panels for future iPhones

        1

In a world captivated by new foldable phones, Apple dares to explore a different dimension of innovation. With a recent patent filing, Apple is exploring the concept of rollable or scrollable display for its future devices. This innovation could potentially be applied to iPhones, iPads, televisions, desktop displays, and even vehicle dashboards. While the patent filing does not guarantee immediate product releases, it does demonstrate Apple’s ongoing interest in expandable display technology.

        Apple’s Rolling Display Roundup:

        The Rollable Display

As per the rollable patent application, Apple’s upcoming device would feature a display capable of transitioning between a rolled-up and unrolled stage.

The display would appear flat in its unrolled state. Meanwhile, in the rolled state, it would bend around an axis onto a roller for compact storage. The display would consist of a pixel array responsible for image production and a transparent protective layer, which may include a locally thinned glass layer to facilitate bending.

        Apple's-rollable-display-patent

        Protective Measures

The inward-facing surface will remain protected and relatively smooth to address potential scratches. In contrast, the outward-facing surface will be exposed to potential hazards.

And  For design, Apple aims to prevent glass layer cracking by configuring the display to roll in a way that places compressive stress on the outward-facing surface. Let’s expect this design choice helps safeguard the display from damage when rolled up.
