JioPhone Next announced: An ultra-affordable 4G smartphone co-developed with Google

0

Jio, an India-based telco backed by Mukesh Ambani, announced JioPhone Next during Reliance Industries’ 44th Annual General Meeting (AGM). The phone was developed in collaboration with Google and runs an optimized version of Android. And according to the company, JioPhone Next will be “the most affordable smartphone not just in India, but globally.”

JioPhone Next Overview:

Design

Let’s start with the phone’s design. It includes large bezels around the display, a simple plastic back with a single camera, and the Jio logo in the middle. Mukesh Ambani claims that JioPhone Next would be an “ultra-affordable 4G smartphone.” So, the firm must make a compromise in terms of design.

Furthermore, based on the image, the screen size appears to be around 5-inches. For a compact phone on a budget, that shouldn’t pose a problem.

Collab with Google

Aside from the design, JioPhone Next comes with some interesting features. Co-developed by Google and Jio, It will be “powered by extremely optimized Android,” with features such as a voice assistant, text-to-speech capabilities, language translation, and more.

Furthermore, Google claims that the phone will “get the latest Android feature and security updates”. Similar to Pixel phones, it will also get “Feature Drops” on a timely basis.

JioPhone Next Features

The search giant claims that the camera will offer great photo and video quality. It will take clearer photographs at night and in low-light conditions, and even support HDR, which will provide a greater color and dynamic range. They’ve teamed up with Snapchat to bring India-specific Snapchat Lenses right into the camera.

What’s more?

Moving on, Google Cloud and Jio have collaborated to deliver 5G in enterprise and consumer markets in India. The latter will move the majority of its core businesses to Google Cloud.

The collaboration would aid in the delivery of faster 5G connectivity in the country. Similarly, Google Cloud AI/ML, data and analytics, and other cloud-native technologies will help Jio to bring new services in the gaming, healthcare, education, and entertainment sector.

JioPhone Next Price and Availability

JioPhone Next will likely be offered in two colorways—blue and black—when it goes on sale in India on September 10th. The device will also be available in foreign markets. However, no particular worldwide launch date has been announced yet.

Its rechargeable battery lasts up to three months, and the precise blue optical sensor works on nearly any surface. Users have more control thanks to a programmable utility button and customizable DPI sensitivity.

Lenovo Go Vertical Mouse

Next up is Lenovo Go Wireless Vertical Mouse, which features an optimized angle and curvature, as well as a comfortable “handshake” posture. The design decreases wrist pressure and forearm strain. It is made of a comfortable cork material that is easy to clean.

The USB-C Wireless Mouse and Wireless Vertical Mouse are coming in July and August, respectively.

Wireless Keyboards

Similarly, another oddball item is the Wireless Split Keyboard, which is meant to provide a better palm rest. It provides a more natural typing experience by combining ultra-responsive tactile key feel with vertical tenting. Furthermore, the company released a Wireless Numeric Keypad, which is ideal for accountants and such.

Micromax IN 2b and IN 2c appear in Geekbench listing with Unisoc chipset

0

Micromax made a comeback in the smartphone industry with its IN-branded phones back in November last year. The company currently has three smartphones in its portfolio and is looking to add some more in the coming months. Two of them have landed on the Geekbench listing and could launch any time soon. Here is everything we know about the upcoming Micromax IN 2b and IN 2c.

Micromax IN 2b and IN 2c Overview:

Micromax IN 2b and 2c will be the first devices to launch as a part of IN 2-series. The former is a follow-up to last year’s IN 1b, whereas the other looks like the first of a new product line.

The two phones were spotted in the Geekbench listing. And so far, the only difference that we know between the two is the moniker.

In fact, Micromax IN 2b and 2c will be powered by the same processor. Interestingly, Micromax has opted for a Unisoc processor this time. Unisoc is primarily known for entry-level chips that mostly fly under the radar. However, the company plans to penetrate the mainstream market with chips like SC9863A and T610.

Unisoc T610

The latter is the one being used in the Micromax IN 2b and IN 2c. Built on TSMC’s 12nm process, T610 features 2x Cortex-A75 and 6x Cortex-A55 CPU cores, all clocked at 1.8GHz. There is Mali G52 for graphics. The specs are comparable similar to Helio G80 (found in Micromax IN 1), except for the lower clocked Cortex-A75 cores.

Geekbench scores say the same thing. The scores of Micromax IN 2b and IN 2c are slightly lower than that of Helio G80. That being said, T610 performs significantly better than Helio G35 powering the IN 1b.

Memory and Software

Micromax IN 2b and IN 2c will ship with Android 11 out-of-the-box. They will not include heavy in-house customization or ads and will provide a near-stock Android experience. Each phone will at least have a variant with 4GB RAM.

Micromax IN 2b and IN 2c Launch Date

Previously in an interview, Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma revealed that the company plans to launch more smartphones by Q2 2021. Thus, we can expect it to drop these rumored phones in the coming weeks.

Smartphone model Launch Date (Expected)
Micromax IN 2b, IN 2c Late Q2 – Early Q3

Nothing has been said about their pricing yet, but we expect them to be competitive. After all, they will be competing against phones from Chinese smartphone brands like Xiaomi and Realme whose USP has been their pricing.

Expect plenty more products

In separate instances, Micromax has shared its plans for upcoming products. For instance, the company is working on a 5G phone as well. There is a gaming phone in development too. Micromax even has its eye on the accessories market. The first non-smartphone Micromax product will be a TWS.

This solar-powered drone can fly at 70,000 feet for a year

0

BAE Systems has developed a solar-powered drone capable of flying for more than a year. Known as the PHASA-35, it can fly above 70000 ft (in the stratospheric layer) for over a year. It will be able to transmit data between troops in the absence of satellites.

PHASA-35 Overview:

The drone was constructed at the BAE system plant in Warton, Lancashire. According to the company, the aircraft can fly above the surface for 20 months at a height of around 70,000 feet.

It weighs around 150 kg and has a payload capacity of 15 kg, which includes cameras, sensors, and communications equipment. It will allow troops to communicate with one another and potentially give internet connectivity to rural areas during disasters.

The real solar-powered jet

During the day, the drone will collect solar energy and use it to charge a bank of small batteries. These batteries will allow the drone to stay in the air indefinitely, allowing for extended operations.

The aircraft, which was developed in conjunction with experts from the SME Prismatic, successfully conducted its maiden flight in Australia last year. The crew is now preparing to send it into the stratosphere for the first time.

PHASA-35 components

BAE Systems hopes that it will deliver game-changing capabilities for a variety of military and commercial purposes. It may be used to monitor disaster-affected areas, border security, marine and military surveillance, and mobile internet communications.

Furthermore, the business claims that replacing the components will be simple because they land at a walking speed and are lightweight.

PHASA-35 in air

However, launching the aircraft needs the proper climatic conditions. Likewise, because of its long wingspan, it does not ascend quickly. It can rise at a speed of 1 foot per second and takes roughly two weeks to get from one point to its furthest determined point.

Additionally, it can give steady observations for a long period since they operate in the stratosphere, where there are no problems like wind and rain.

Starlink’s alternative

The drone can deliver internet connectivity in disaster-affected areas or on secure army communications as well. As a result, you can think of it as a temporary replacement for SpaceX‘s satellite. Although, the connectivity is for a limited time rather than on an ongoing basis.

Furthermore, its duration might vary depending on the poles in which it will fly. For instance, using it in an area with little sunshine may lower its uptime. It also has a variable payload architecture, so it can carry a variety of sensors; resulting in an extremely high degree of persistent coverage over a set target region.

PHASA-35 Availability

BAE Systems intends to commercialize the device by the middle of the decade. They want to provide a persistent yet affordable alternative to satellite technology. The company aims to provide the service by identifying client needs.

For example, some people may want to utilize their data service, while others may want to book a certain time on the drone’s camera, and so on. In addition, large companies will be able to purchase it as an asset.

China Mobile to invest $1 billion to build a mobile data network in Nepal

0

China Mobile, a prominent player in China’s telecommunications industry, will invest USD 1 billion in Nepal’s telecommunications sector. The data comes from United Nation’s World Investment Report for 2021. China Mobile will use the funds to establish a mobile data network in Nepal.

China Mobile data network in Nepal:

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) recently issued the World Investment Report for 2021, which mentions China Mobile’s plans to establish a mobile data network in Nepal.

China Mobile plan to invest $1 in Nepal

The report lists the project in the ICT sector and highlights that it has already begun. However, no conversations have taken place with the relevant authority of the Nepal Government.

In discussion with TechPana, Director General of the Department of Industry, Jiv Lal Bhushal speculated that the plans and proposal might be in the work. He says “In terms of the size of the investment, it should first go through the investment board”.

Similarly, Sushil Bhatta, Chief Executive Officer of the Investment Board, states that he is not aware of any such plans at this time. He believes that the project is in its early stages and will soon arrive at the authority’s door.

An undisclosed project

China Mobile, on the other hand, has not revealed any information about it either. However, in its 2017 Sustainability Report, “Connecting the New Era”, it was said that the firm will push the infrastructure project to connect the world. This comprises the installation of a cross-border optical fiber line linking Nepal, Myanmar, Pakistan, and Kyrgyzstan.

SpaceX’s Starlink plans to provide global internet coverage by September

0

The race for satellite internet dominance is on. And one of the frontrunners in this field is SpaceX’s Starlink. A couple of months ago, the company confirmed that over 10,000 beta users were using its internet service. Now, SpaceX Starlink expects that it will be able to deliver global internet coverage from September this year.

SpaceX Starlink global coverage:

Elon Musk, the company’s CEO, has long dreamed of providing high-speed internet access to the world. And it appears that this goal may soon become a reality.

Gwynn Shotwell, president of SpaceX, initially stated on Tuesday that Starlink will be able to deliver worldwide coverage by September. A while back, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved SpaceX’s proposal to put several Starlink satellites in lower Earth orbit than previously requested.

Following that, its geostationary satellites are now orbiting at a 335 to 354 miles altitude, down from 683 to 807 miles. What this ultimately results in is better coverage and data speed.

Constellations all over the sky

Starlink launched its initial batch of satellites for the first time on May 23, 2009. The batch consisted of 60 satellites. That number has since grown to 1,500 while the company plans to launch 42,000 satellites into space one day.

SpaceX Starlink satellite

Now, Shotwell told to Macquarie Group technology conference via a webcast that we could expect global coverage by September this year. She says, “We’ve successfully deployed 1,800 or so satellites and once all those satellites reach their operational orbit, we will have continuous global coverage, so that should be like September timeframe”.

Even though Starlink’s telecom services might be available this year, they are subject to regulatory approval in every country. This implies they must obtain permission to operate telecom services in each country. And that’s a lot of work to accomplish.

Operations

Starlink currently operates (in beta stage) in 11 countries, including the United States, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and portions of Europe. The goal of SpaceX’s satellite internet service is to bring connectivity to parts of the world where it has otherwise remained a challenge.

Musk’s tweet regarding service pre-orders in May was pretty fascinating. He tweeted that Starlink has almost 500,000 pre-orders and that everyone in line would be able to use it. However, he stated that “it becomes more difficult as we reach into the several million user range”.

SpaceX Starlink global coverage: What’s the price?

To use Starlink’s satellite internet, one must pay nearly USD 600 in advance. It includes USD 99 monthly charge as well as a USD 499 Starlink Kit, which contains the “UFO on a Stick” terminal, mounting tripod, and WiFi router. According to estimations, if Starlink can get 25 million subscribers, it will generate around USD 30 billion in revenue each year.
