Apple officially announced the release of the new 14-inch MacBook Pro back in October. This model features the M4 and M4 Pro chip, which offers significant performance improvements over previous generations. The new MacBook Pro 14-inch retains the design introduced in 2021. It features a casing made from 100% recycled aluminum. The dimensions are 1.55 cm * 31.26 cm * 22.12 cm, with a weight of 1.55 kg for the M4 model. Customers can choose between two color options: Silver and Space Black.

The device is equipped with a Liquid Retina XDR display. It supports a sustained brightness of 1000 nits and peaks at 1600 nits for HDR content. The display also offers ProMotion technology, allowing for adaptive refresh rates of up to 120Hz.

Processor

The new MacBook Pro M4’s core is the M4 chip, which includes a 10-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. The M4 chip provides notable speed enhancements, being 1.8 times faster than the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro in gigapixel photo editing and 3.4 times faster for rendering complex scenes in Blender. It also features a 16-core Neural Engine, which is three times faster than the M1.

There’s also the M4 Pro and M4 Max chip with up to a 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 48GB of unified memory, and 4TB of storage. This guy has a lot higher memory bandwidth and comes with additional performance cores to give you that extra horsepower for intensive applications.

The new 14-inch MacBook Pro includes three Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, MagSafe 3, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. This is an increase from two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports in the base M3 model. The base memory has been upgraded to 16GB, up from 8GB in the previous model.

The new MacBook Pro features the same design as its predecessor. Just like the regular 14”, it features a casing made from 100% recycled aluminum. But as the name specified, the dimensions are slightly bigger at 248.10 x 355.70 x 16.80, with a weight of 2.11 kg. Customers can choose between two color options: Silver and Space Black.

Processor

Apple’s MacBook Air series has been the go-to choice for a number of people who want a thin, lightweight, and powerful laptop. And the company has shaken up this lineup by announcing the biggest MacBook Air ever. The latest MacBook Air packs the same M2 chip as the existing offering but brings a new 15” form factor and a larger battery. So, let’s get into the specs, features, official price, and availability of the Apple MacBook Air 15 in Nepal.

Apple MacBook Air 15 Overview:

New 15″ Form Factor

As the name suggests, the MacBook Air 15 features a 15.3-inch display. The screen real estate is 25% larger than most recent MacBook Airs, which all bring a 13-inch screen. The Liquid Retina display on the MacBook Air 15 boasts 500 nits of brightness and supports up to 1 billion colors. Apple has kept the bezels minimum at 5mm, and there is a notch on top to house the 1080P FaceTime camera.

It is housed inside a metal chassis that measures 11.5mm and weighs around 1.52 kg. Apple even claims it is the world’s thinner 15-inch laptop right now. Nevertheless, the MacBook Air 15 is available in four color options: Silver, Starlight, Space Gray, and Midnight — the same as its 13” counterpart.

Bigger Battery, Better Speaker

Thanks to its bigger form factor, Apple has managed to fit in a bigger battery in the MacBook Air 15. It now has a 66.5 Wh battery is larger than the 52.5Wh one on the 13-inch model. Apple ships the laptop with 35W dual USB-C port power brick and a USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable by default. However, it supports fast charging up to 70W with a compatible power adapter.

Another small difference lies in the audio setup. While the regular 13-inch MacBook Air has quad speakers, the new 15-inch model adds two force-canceling woofers. As a result, the speaker setup is much closer to the premium 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros.

Rest of the Specs

The other specs are pretty much the same across the MacBook Air lineup. The same M2 chip powers the new MacBook Air 15 as the 13-inch model. The chip has an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU, along with 8GB of unified memory (RAM) on the base configuration.

It also lacks active cooling, which separates it from the Pros. The port selection is also the same; there is a 3.5mm headphone hack to the right, whereas MagSafe 3 resides on the left, along with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. The MagSafe 3 connector is fully made of recycled cobalt which Apple says is the first for the company.

The price for the new Macbook initially started at Rs. 204,000 for the base 8/256GB variant. Now you can get it for just NPR 190,000 after the recent price drop through the Hukut Store.

Unlike the norm, Apple unveiled the M3-equipped MacBook Pros before their Air lineup back in October (2023). Later, the Cupertino giant refreshed its 13 and 15-inch Airs with the M3 silicon in March (2024), then bumped up the base memory to 16GB. Apple MacBook Air M3 Overview: 

M3 Magic

The M3 chip in the new MacBook Air 13 is the same one that we saw in the base MacBook Pro 13 from last year. According to Apple, the processor is up to 60% faster than the base M1 SoC. It features a total of 8 Cores with 4 on the performance side and others on the efficiency end alongside up to 10 GPU cores. The chip now supports hardware-accelerated mesh shading and raytracing alongside an AV1 decode engine for efficient video streaming and playback. This allows for higher-quality video even at low bitrates which enhances the overall streaming experience.  

With that extra power, the base MacBook Air (with M3) can now drive two external displays with its lid closed. You can configure the machine with up to 24GB of unified memory and up to 2TB of storage while the base variants continue to ship with a modest 8/256 trim. 

Design 

Looks-wise there isn’t an overhaul like we saw with the M2 Air. You get the same unibody metal design that weighs less than 1.25 kg and measures just a tad more than 1 cm. And unfortunately, we aren’t getting new colors either. Besides the standard ‘Silver’ and ‘Space Grey’ color options, you can pick between ‘Starlight’ and ‘‘Midnight’- the latter of which now features a new anodization seal to reduce fingerprints.

The screen doesn’t see any upgrades on paper either. The MacBook Air M3 sports a 13.3-inch Liquid Retina display that can hit 500 nits of maximum brightness. Resolution and colors also stay the same at 2560×1664 and Wide P3.

Alongside that, the notch is still there and houses the same FHD webcam. 

New Chip, Same Endurance

Apple quotes the same 18 hours of battery life as they did for the M2 MacBook. In theory, the newer M3 with its more efficient 3nm architecture should provide more endurance with the 52.6 Wh lithium polymer battery, but that seems to not be the case (according to Apple). And although the device supports up to 67W of power via USB-C, Apple ships a 30W MagSafe charger with the base variants.

On the same topic, let’s take a look at the ports, which again, are the same as the previous generation with a modest 2 Thunderbolt 4s, a Magsafe, and a 3.5mm audio jack. 

Everything else is the same

Everything else — except the WiFi stays the same. You get the same Backlit Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Force Touch trackpad that MacBooks are famous for. There are a total of 4 speakers with support for ‘Spatial Audio’ and ‘Dolby Atmos’ and a three-microphone array with beamforming tech. These do not deviate a lot from their predecessors in terms of design or much else but they do bring more power and efficiency to the table. It weighs 1.51 kg and comes in the same Silver, Space Grey, Midnight, and Starlight color options. 

On the display end, you get a 15.3” Liquid Retina display (LED) with up to 500 nits of brightness and True Tone support. It features a resolution of 2880 by 1864 pixels that equates to a pixel density of 224 ppi.

18 hours of battery life

Despite the more efficient M3 silicon, the MacBook Air 15 (2024) is quoted to have the same 18 hours of battery life. It houses the same 66.5Wh battery with support for up to 70W fast chargers. Unfortunately, you’ll have to make do with a 35W dual port charger out of the box.

The port story plays out the same at 2 Thunderbolts, the MagSafe port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. 

Not much new

Since the chassis is unchanged, it only makes sense for the keyboard, trackpad, and others to follow suit. As such, the 6 speaker setup and three-mic array are the same as before alongside the backlit magic keyboard and large trackpad.
