M1 MacBook Air vs M1 MacBook Pro: Which one should you buy?

1

Apple’s M1 MacBooks will release in Nepal within the next month. However, should you buy the M1 MacBook Pro or M1 MacBook Air? It is a real conundrum, right? After all, both of them share most of the specs. Yet, there are some notable differences such as the inclusion of fans and the superior GPU cores. But other than that, most of the specifications are the same. So, which one should you buy once it becomes available? Well, that’s what we are here to discuss. Let’s see how the two devices fare against each other on various front.

M1 MacBook Air vs Pro Specifications:

MacBook Air MacBook Pro
Processor M1 (8-core) M1 (8-core)

Price in the US (Starting) $999 (8/256GB) $1,299 (8/256GB)

As the specification table shows, the two MacBooks share most of the specifications. But let’s dive deeper into what they have to offer.

Design, Battery, Keyboard, and Speaker

Both have them have a similar sort of weight and dimension measurements. Traditionally, MacBook Air is supposed to be more portable than the Pro variant. However, here we can see that though the Air is a tad bit lighter than the Pro, the M1 MacBook Air is thicker at the thickest point. Still, if weight is what concerns you the most, then the MacBook Air gets the point in this category. But in practical usage, things aren’t going to be radically different between the two MacBooks’ weight.

Talking about the I/O ports, they both sport a headphone jack and 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C (which support Thunderbolt 3), so no difference there. However, battery-wise, the Pro now offers around 3 hours more endurance than the Air. That’s somewhat of a diversion from what we have seen traditionally.

Faster charging

But given the fact that despite sharing the same chipset, the Pro variant gets a bigger battery. So, that’s kind of expected. Furthermore, the Air comes with a 30W charger while the Pro gets a 61W charger. Thus, the MacBook Pro not only offers better battery backup, but it also comes with faster charging. This would be a thing to consider between the two relatively similar laptops.

m1 macbook air vs pro internals

Both the devices have a Magic keyboard. However, the edges on the Air is slightly sloped. So, it might feel a bit comfortable to use M1 MacBook Air rather than the Pro which has flat edges. However, this should not be much of a concern to many. The main difference here is obviously the inclusion of the Touch Bar in the MacBook Pro. But, it is not an immediate advantage either, considering how many users don’t find it that useful, to begin with. Thus, it is up to the personal preference of the user, whether they want the Touch Bar or not.

From what I’ve seen till now, the MacBook Air has a considerably loud and clear sounding speaker than that of the MacBook Pro. Furthermore, personally, I would prefer a loudspeaker much more than the one which has slightly better bass. So, MacBook Air would be my go-to device in terms of the speaker.

Display and Performance

Unlike the past MacBook Airs, the M1 variant has the P3-white color gamut support. Thus, photo editors can now go for the much cheaper MacBook Air too. So, there’s not much of a difference as far as the display quality is concerned. However, the MacBook Air has a slightly lower brightness compared to the Pro. But other than that, you won’t find any difference.

The base M1 MacBook Air model comes with a 7-core GPU, whereas the Pro has 8-cores. However, Geekbench scores have shown that their scores vary by only the slightest of margins. So, you shouldn’t really find much of a difference while using the devices.

Now, the MacBook Pro does come with a fan. However, it does not really switch on until the device is pushed to its absolute limit, and that is rarely gonna happen. Most results have shown that you only get slightly better performance on the MacBook Pro.

MacBook Air (M1) vs MacBook Pro (M1): Verdict

All things considered, the M1 MacBook Pro only offers slightly better performance than the M1 MacBook Air. Now, the latter comes cheaper than the Pro version. So, unless you are a fan of the touch bar, I wouldn’t really recommend spending the extra $300 (according to international price) on the M1 MacBook Pro. But hey, in the end, it’s all up to the buyer.

Samsung announces cheaper Galaxy A02s alongside the A12

0

Alongside the anticipated Galaxy A12, Samsung also launched the Galaxy A02s. It comes as a surprise since the company hasn’t released A02, to begin with, which would’ve been the successor to the Galaxy A01. And usually, we see an ‘s’ variant only after the vanilla model. Putting that aside, let’s take a look at the specs, features, expected price, and availability of Samsung Galaxy A02s in Nepal.

Samsung Galaxy A02s Overview

Design and Display

Like the A21, the new Samsung Galaxy A02s sports a 6.5-inch TFT panel, which is bigger than the 5.7-inch panel on the A01. As expected, it is an HD+ panel with an Infinity-V notch that houses the front camera.

Samsung Galaxy A02s Design

At the back, there is a rectangular camera module that encloses the triple camera setup. The device lacks a fingerprint sensor. Thus, the rear panel is clean except for the Samsung branding towards the bottom of the device.

Performance and Memory

Samsung Galaxy A02s is powered by an unspecified SoC. But we do know that it is an octa-core processor with a clock speed of up to 1.8GHz. However, the clock speed points particularly to Snapdragon 450. This entry-level SoC from Qualcomm features eight Cortex-A53 cores with a maximum clock speed of up to 1.8GHz.

The phone comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage. The latter can be expanded up to 1TB using an external MicroSD card.

Camera

Galaxy A02s flaunts a triple camera setup on the back. It is not a major upgrade as Samsung has added a 2MP macro sensor to the A01’s dual-camera setup. The other two sensors have remained the same. We are talking about a 13MP primary camera joined by a 2MP depth sensor. Samsung also didn’t upgrade the 5MP selfie camera.

Rest of the specs

The biggest upgrade is in the battery. Galaxy A02s now features a massive 5,000mAh battery compared to 3,000mAh in its predecessor. The device also supports 15W charging. It will be available in two color options – Black and White.

Samsung Galaxy A02s Specifications:

  • Display: 6.5-inches HD+ TFT
  • CPU: Octa-core (1.8GHz)
  • RAM: 3GB
  • Storage: 32GB (expandable using SD card)
  • Rear Camera: Triple camera;

    – 2MP depth sensor
    – 2MP macro sensor
  • Front Camera: 5MP
  • Battery: 5000mAh with 15W fast charging

Samsung Galaxy A02s Price in Nepal and Availability

Samsung A02s will go on sale in Europe starting in February, where its price will be €150 for the 3+32GB variant. We expect the price of Samsung Galaxy A02s in Nepal to be around NPR 22,000 when it launched later on.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 (2020) launched in Nepal

0

Samsung has been keeping the Android tablet dream well and truly alive. They have a great selection of devices for every price range. The Galaxy Tab S6 Lite was a great mid-range tablet. Announced around early September, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 (2020) is finally available in Nepal. Let’s look at the specifications and price in Nepal of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A7.

This metallic built tablet measures 9.8 x 6.2 x 0.3 -inches and weighs about 1 pound. It sports a 10.4-inch TFT display with 2000 x 1200 pixel resolution. The display has a peak brightness of 329 nits, so, the brightness might be an issue here. However, it does cover 102% of the sRGB color gamut, so, the colors will be fairly accurate.

The 5MP front camera is on the right-hand side bezel. That means you’ll have to place the device horizontally in order to use it for video calls and meetings. And on the back, it has an 8MP shooter. Not the greatest of specs in terms of camera, but then again tablets are not for photo-shoots so it’s still fine.

DJI Mini 2 with improved video capability, performance launched in Nepal

1

DJI Mini 2, the successor to last year’s Mavic Mini launched just a couple of weeks ago abroad. And now, Oliz Store has already made it available in Nepal. Let’s learn more about the DJI Mini 2 drone along with its specs, features, official price, and availability in Nepal.

DJI Mini 2 Overview

Design and Controller

From a distance, one can mistake the new DJI Mini 2 for its predecessor. The two drones sport a similar design. DJI Mini 2 even weighs around 249 grams, which is what its predecessor Mavic Mini weighs. This makes the drone portable. One can also notice a tiny difference in the dimensions. When folded, the new Mini 2 measures 138 x 81 x 58mm. Unfolded and with the propellers on, the drone measures 245 x 289 x 56mm. DJI Mini 2 design

The controller for the DJI Mini 2 looks like the one that came with the Mavic Air 2. It packs in a 5200mAh battery and can support devices with a maximum length of 92mm.

Flight performance and transmission

The biggest upgrade in the DJI Mini 2 has to be the inclusion of OcuSync 2.0, which improves data transmission. The Mini 2 now has a maximum transmission range of 10km. Because of its dual-frequency technology, the drone can switch between two channels to avoid getting affected interference. Similarly, DJI has also improved on the flight performance. Mini 2 boasts a flight time of up to 31 minutes and can resist wind of up to 24mph.

Camera Performance

DJI Mini 2 uses a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor with an effective pixel of 12MP. Users can save images in DNG (RAW) format in addition to the standard JPEG format. It can now record 4K/30 fps video at 100 Mbps. When shooting in FHD, the drone can zoom up to 4x. That reduces to just 2x when recording 4K videos. There is a 3-axis gimbal for video stabilization. It comes with the following pre-set QuickShots modes:

  • Drone: It makes the drone fly back and up with the camera tracking the subject. The selectable height limits are 40, 60, 80, 100, and 120 feet.
  • Helix: It makes the drone fly up and away with a spiraling motion around the subject. The height limit is the same as that of Dronie mode.
  • Rocket: Here, the drone flies straight up with the camera focused downward on the subject.
  • Circle: The drone circles around the subject maintaining a certain altitude and distance.
  • Boomerang: The drone follows a boomerang-like oval path around the subject.

Companion App and Battery

DJI has also added to what users can do with the DJI Fly app. Users can now download images and shareable videos on their smartphones directly without the need of the remote controller at a speed of 20MB/s. They can also edit images in the app or use the Enhance photo option for quick results. There is also a trimmed download feature that lets users trim the video before downloading the video, saving both time and bandwidth.

DJI Fly App

The 2250mAh LiPo 2S battery in the DJI Mini 2 is rated for 31 minutes for flight time. That is only slightly better than Mavic Mini’s 30 minutes flight time. Though the drone has a maximum charging capacity of 29W, it comes with a charger that is rated for just 18W.

DJI Mini 2 Specifications:

  • Dimension: 159 x 203 x 56mm (unfolded); 245 x 289 x 56mm. (Unfolded with propellers); 138 x 81 x 58mm (folded)
  • Weight: 249 grams
  • Battery Capacity: 2,250 mAh with 29W Max Charging Power

Sony could drop a compact phone powered by SD 775 next year

0

After being left in the dark for long, compact phones are now making comebacks. This year we saw Apple launch iPhone SE 2020 and iPhone 12 Mini for users that love the compact form factor. And recent rumors suggest that Sony will be launching a high-end compact phone next year. Let’s take a look at all the rumors, leaks, specs, and expected launch of the supposed Sony Xperia 1 III Compact.

Sony Xperia 1 III Compact Rumors Roundup

Compacts phone are nothing new to Sony. At a time, the company used to put out flagship phones with compact form factors like the Xperia XZ2 Compact. In recent news, Sony has already discontinued the Compact lineup and the company’s latest flagships now come with tall screen sizes. For instance, the Xperia 1 II came with a 6.5-inch screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio.

Rumored specs

But things could change with the Xperia 1 III. The latest rumor suggests the Sony will be launching a Compact variant of the Sony Xperia 1 III alongside the regular model. Some even claim there will be an additional Premium model that will be bigger than the two.

Sony Xperia 1 III Compact Weibo Leaks

The Sony Xperia 1 III is rumored to feature a 5.5-inch display, which will be positioned below the Xperia 1 III. While the latter is expected to come with the flagship Snapdragon 875 chipset, its Compact variant will house the successor to the Snapdragon 765 /765G. Nothing has been confirmed yet, but Qualcomm is likely to launch Snapdragon 775 for mid-range smartphones in 2021. The upcoming chipset will be based on Qualcomm’s 6nm process.

Take it with a grain of salt.

But, it is not the first time that rumors of a compact Xperia have surfaced on the internet. Last year, a report from IT Home claimed that Sony will be releasing an Xperia Compact in MWC 2020 powered by Snapdragon 665. However, it hasn’t been the case.

Sony Xperia in 2021

While the rumors of the compact phone might not be entirely true, the company is likely to follow up the Xperia 1 II with Xperia 1 III anyway. It will feature Snapdragon 875 SoC. Rumors claim it will the first Sony phone to feature a quad-camera setup. Sony will also be launching a cheaper 5G phones in the form of Xperia 10 III. It will be powered by Snapdragon 690. Manchester United falls victim to a “sophisticated” cyber attack

0

Who has not heard about Manchester United? It is among the most decorated football clubs in England with a total of a record 13 Premier League Titles. Even outside of England, it ranks among the most followed football clubs in the world. Recently, Manchester United released a public statement to confirm a cyber attack it faced.

Manchester United under cyber attack

On Friday, Manchester United announced that the club faced a cyber attack on its system. While the club remained tight-lipped about the type of threat it faced, it acknowledged that it was a sophisticated operation by organized cyber criminals. You can read the full statement here.

Fortunately, the club had foreseen the possibility of such attacks and had extensive protocols and procedures in place for such events. The club said its cyber defense was swift to identify the attack and shut down affected systems to control the damage. All of the club’s media channels including its website and app were unaffected by the cyber attack. The club also didn’t report any breach of personal data of its fan and customers.

The incident took place a day before Manchester United’s match against West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League. The club on Friday assured that all the critical systems required for the Premier League match remained secure and operational and that would not affect the upcoming game. The match took place as intended.

Since the attack, the club worked with the Information Commissioner Office to contain the damage and minimize the ongoing IT disruption. Further details about the attack are likely to come out after forensic tracing has been carried out.

Other instances of football clubs under cyber attack

Manchester United is not the first club to report such cyber attacks, not even in the Premier League. Back in 2018, Liverpool FC reported unauthorized access to certain data held by the club. Attackers had hacked into one of the staff email accounts. As a result, attackers obtained the personal data of around 150 hospitality season ticket holders.

And such attacks have not slowed down in recent times. Earlier this year, the UK’s National Cyber Security Center warned sports bodies of growing cyber attacks. According to its report, 70% of sports bodies were victims of at least a cyber attack in the duration of 12 months.

Healthy.io makes detection of kidney diseases as easy as taking a selfie

0

Countries worldwide have announced to impose lockdown to battle COVID-19. While it may be effective in controlling the spread of COVID-19 infection, it has made it difficult for other patients to access medical services. Amidst this, Healthy.io has launched apps for kidney patients. The AI-powered apps claim to make self-diagnosis of UTIs and kidney diseases as easy as taking a selfie. Let’s learn more about the home-based urinalysis by Healthy.io.

Healthy.io: An Overview

Healthy.io was started by Yonatan Adiri. Adiri is also the current CEO of the company. At the age of 26, he became Israel’s first Chief Technology Officer. In 2009, he debuted in the private sector with Getaround. It was part of the Singularity University GSP program. Then in 2013, he went on to start Healthy.io.

Talking about Healthy.io, it is the first company to get FDA class II permission for a smartphone-based urine test. The startup has also been on Fast Company’s list of 50 Most Innovative Companies in the world (2020). It even won the 2020 Financial Times Boldness in Business Award

Healthy.io uses its knowledge of computer vision, product design, and clinical practices in bringing clinical services from the lab to the user’s home. It even introduces itself as the category creators of smartphone urinalysis.

Home-based Urinalysis Test

As of now, the company is working on two smartphone app – Velieve and ACR. The former is for UTI whereas the latter detects kidney disease diagnoses. However, both apps work in a similar fashion. Healthy.io has developed urine ACR kits for each test.

Healthy.io Velieve UTI Detection Kit

The kit comes with a urinalysis dipstick, a urine collection cup, and a patented color board. The dipstick is treated with albumin and creatinine reagent. Thus, it changes its color when exposed to a urine sample. Users then have to place the dipstick on the color board and scan it using the smartphone app. The app then uses computer vision to provide an accurate result. Here, the result is then sent to the health worker via the cloud or to the patients themselves.

Healthy.io ACR kit

Users will have to download the apps before taking the test. The app provides instruction on how to use the kit, from unboxing it to carrying out tests and scanning the result. The two kits are safe, and have been approved by the FDA (US) and received CE marking from the European Union.

Healthy.io Home-based Urinalysis Availability

The home-based urinalysis by Healthy.io is available in the US and the UK. It has collaborated with the NKF and NHS in the US and the UK, respectively.
