India imposes import ban on laptops, tablets & all-in-one computers

2

India recently placed a ban on the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers falling under HSN code 8741. Although not official, it is speculated that the Indian government made this move to strengthen domestic manufacturing. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry made this decision. It will impact the tech industry and consumers related.

Key Changes and Implications

Computing machines under HSN 8741 will now require a special import license. This restriction is an effort to place delays in the import of such products to motivate manufacturing inside the country.

The restriction doesn’t apply under the baggage rule. That is, if consumers buy these devices from online shops for personal use, they don’t need a special permit but still have to pay taxes. Moreover, import license exceptions grant approval for particular purposes like conducting research, development, testing, benchmarking, evaluation, repair, and re-export.

However, the implementation of these import restrictions is postponed until October 31, 2023. This adjustment allows manufacturers and importers more time to adapt to the new regulations.

What is the import restriction for?

The laptop import ban in India align with the government’s broader agenda to promote domestic manufacturing. This decision is similar to what was done before with color TVs. Back then, encouraging local TV-making worked well, so they’re trying it again with these devices.

The import restrictions are likely to pave the way for local electronics manufacturers to flourish. Even though a few parts could still be brought in from outside, local businesses might find it simpler to get special licenses that let them bring in those parts. This shift could provide a competitive advantage to Indian electronics companies and manufacturers.

Short-Term Challenges for PC OEMs

However, PC original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) might encounter challenges in the immediate future. According to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), India’s traditional PC market saw a decline of 30.1 percent year over year in the first quarter of 2023. This restriction on imports may result in short-term supply disruptions. It will particularly affect brands that are heavily reliant on imports like Acer, Samsung, Panasonic, Apple, Lenovo, and HP.

Conclusion

In the long term, this policy shift could lead to increased local production of laptops, tablets, and personal computers, reducing India’s reliance on imported devices. The government’s strategy underscores its commitment to fostering a self-reliant and robust electronics industry, aligning with the larger vision of the “Make In India” campaign.

As the tech industry navigates these changes, consumers can expect to witness the evolution of the market and the emergence of new opportunities for local manufacturers.

Sony’s flagship headphones, WH-1000XM5, finally arrives in Nepal

Sony launched its flagship wireless headphones, the WH-1000XM5, back in May 2022. And finally, after more than a year, it is now available in Nepal as well. So, let’s get over the specs, features, official price, and availability of the Sony WH-1000XM5 in Nepal.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Overview:

First, the things it improves upon.

Design

The Sony WH-1000XM5 goes in a completely new direction with its design. After a long time, this series has received some sort of major redesign, which includes a new type of hinge that holds the earpads.

The thing is, its slimmer headband ends at a single contact point where the hinge attachment is hidden. While this allows for movement in every direction, its earcups aren’t collapsible like on the WH-1000XM4. Other than that, there are some smaller changes here and there, such as a slider-type switch for the power button, proximity sensor placements, and such.

Improved noise cancellation

Moving on, the Sony WH-1000XM5 doubles the number of microphones. It ships with an 8-microphone system and two chips to process all that information: QN1 and V1. Paired with the Auto NC Optimizer, the noise-canceling performance automatically optimizes based on external factors and wear conditions.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Noise Canceling

Enhanced sound quality

Another thing that’s improved is the audio quality. The decrease in the driver’s size from 40mm to 30mm might technically seem like a downgrade. However, Sony says they have better, more natural audio and much better high-frequency response.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Audio

And now, the things that aren’t much different.

AI processing

The WH-1000XM4 introduced “Edge AI”, which continues on in this iteration as well. This feature is used in conjunction with DSEE Extreme to upscale the compressed audio. In addition, the WH-1000XM5 utilizes four beamforming mics to pick up your voice and uses a custom noise-reduction algorithm for clearer phone calls.

Rest of the features

Apart from all these, Sony’s new WH-1000XM5 can automatically pause the music as you start speaking too. This is what the company calls the “Speak-to-Chat”. Similarly, it also supports wear detection so that the music pauses right away when you’ve put off the headphone. In addition, it has all the typical features such as voice assistant, “Headphones Connect” app support, etc.

Sony WH-1000XM5 360 Reality Audio

The Sony WH-1000XM5 also supports 360° Reality Audio and can be paired with two devices simultaneously. It even delivers Hi-Res audio, thanks to Sony’s own proprietary LDAC codec provided here. Other than this, this headphone offers up to 30 hours of battery life with ANC on (or 10 hours more with ANC turned off). It also supports quick charging, where just 3 minutes of charge gives you 3 hours of music playback.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Specifications:

  • Weight: 250 grams (approx.)
  • Headphone Type: Closed, over-ear
  • Driver Unit: 30mm, dome type, dynamic
  • Impedance: 48Ω (when connected via cable with the unit turned on), 16Ω (when connected via cable with the unit turned off)
  • Frequency Response: 4 Hz – 40,000 Hz
  • Frequency Response (Bluetooth Communication): 20 Hz – 20,000 Hz (44.1 kHz), 20 Hz – 40,000 Hz (LDAC 96 kHz, 990kbps)
  • Input: Stereo mini-jack
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.2
  • Codecs: SBC, AAC, LDAC
  • Active Noise Cancelling: Yes, V1 and QN1 processor + 8-mic setup

  • Battery Charge Time: 3.5 hrs (approx.)
  • Features: Auto NC Optimiser, DSEE Extreme, Edge AI, 360 Reality Audio, Speak to Chat, Precise Voice Pickup

Sony WH-1000XM5 Price in Nepal and Availability

The official Sony WH-1000XM5 price in Nepal is NPR 58,000. But you can get it with a flat 10% off right now. WH-1000XM5 is available in Nepal via Nepa Hima Trade Link, which is the official distributor of Sony products in the country.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is now officially available for pre-booking in Nepal.  So let’s go through the specs, features, official price, and availability of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 in Nepal here.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Price in Nepal

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 is now available in a single 8/256GB memory configuration for a price of Rs. 139,999. The company is offering free 1-year breakage insurance and 1-time protection film replacement on the purchase of the Galaxy Z Flip 5.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Pre-Booking Offers in Nepal

If you pre-book the Samsung Galaxy Flip 5, you get the option to get the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite (LTE) or Essential Monitor S3 24″ at discounted prices.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Overview:

Flex Window

One of the biggest change changes in this year’s Galaxy Z Flip 5 comes in the form of the outer display. The external screen now measures 3.4 inches in diagonal length, which is the biggest we have seen in the Z Flip series. To put it in perspective, last year’s Z Flip 4 has an external display that is only 1.9 inches in size. It even has a name of its own — Samsung is calling it the Flex Window.

There is a lot that users can do with this Flex Windows. It now comes with a full-size QWERTY keyboard to reply to texts and messages. You can make use of a wide range of clockfaces, gestures, and widgets. Because of the bigger screen size, you can stack multiple widgets at once. Moreover, Samsung Z Flip 5’s outer screen is much more customizable compared to its predecessor.

Samsung Flex Window

A new Gapless Hinge

Samsung has finally listened — the company is finally offering a gapless hinge on the Z Flip 5. This feature was confirmed even before the Galaxy Unpacked events, as teaser videos showcased the phone folding completely flat. Samsung has achieved this by using a new double hinge design called Flex Hinge, which it claims to be even more durable. The phone has the same width as the Z Flip 4 but is thinner, measuring just 15.1mm — making it the most compact Z Flip phone yet.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Design and Color Options

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy

Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip 5 is powered by the same Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy as the rest of Samsung’s flagship phones this year. This is a slightly overclocked version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 with the Prime Cortex-X3 cores clocking at 3.36 GHz. It is accompanied by two Cortex-A716 cores and two Cortex-A715 cores at 2.8GHz, two Cortex-A710 cores at 2.8GHz, and three Cortex-A510 cores at 2.0GHz.

This new CPU configuration makes the Z Flip 5 up to 17% faster than its predecessor. The new Adreno 740 and new NPU offer 25% and 20% more performance, respectively.

Iterative Upgrades

Other aspects of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 are rather repetitive. The phone sports the same 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate from last year. That said, the phone now has a panel that you can summon while using it in the Flex model (75° and 115°). The all-new Flex Mode panel features useful shortcuts, a trackpad, and a cursor, as well as music playback controls.

The Galaxy Z Flip lineup has been using a 12MP + 12MP dual camera setup since its launch. And that trend continues with Flip 5. Still, you will be able to take better videos at night as the phone supports 4K/60fps Nightvideography. On the front, there’s a 10MP shooter, just like its predecessor.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 Design

The hyped-up IP68 rating seems to be missing as well as the Z Fold Flip 5 settles for the same IPX8 rating.

Samsung has not changed the battery inside. The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is still fueled by the same 3700mAh battery as its predecessor. Still, Samsung is claiming increased battery life with up to 20 hours of offline video playback on a single charge — banking on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s efficiency. The phone supports the same peak charging speed of 25W.

Color options for the Flip include Mint, Graphite, Cream, Lavender, Gray, Blue, and Green, Yellow. It comes with 8GB of RAM with an option to choose between 128GB and 256GB of internal storage.

Redmi A2+ Full Review

Design and Build

  • 164.9 mm x 76.8 mm x 9.1 mm (192 gm)
  • Plastic Back, Plastic frames

As a consumer looking for a budget-friendly smartphone, I find the design and build quality of the Redmi A2+ quite impressive. It brings back a sense of nostalgia with its resemblance to the A1 variant. The cute color options and leather-like textured finish add a touch of elegance to the phone. It comes in light green, black, and a soothing baby blue color, which you personally find appealing.

On the positive side, I’m glad that the fingerprint sensor is included in the A2+, as it is the only feature that sets it apart from the A2-only variant. The camera placement is also similar to the previous version and looks great. The speaker is positioned at the top, providing loud and clear audio. Moreover, it has a 3.5 mm headphone jack, allowing you to use earphones, which is not common in many modern phones.

One thing I was hoping for in this upgraded version was a Type-C port, but unfortunately, Redmi still went with the micro-USB port. That was a bit disappointing since most phones nowadays come with Type-C, offering faster charging and data transfer speeds.

Display

  • 6.52” HD+ LCD
  • 60Hz refresh rate

When it comes to the display, the Redmi A2+ comes with its 6.52-inch LCD screen, offering the same quality as the A1 variant but at a lower price. It boasts a decent HD resolution, making YouTube videos look not that bad, considering its budget-friendly aspect. For basic usage like scrolling through Facebook & Instagram and playing YouTube, the display quality is quite acceptable.

Redmi A2+ display

However, I must admit that for users like me who enjoy watching Netflix and Prime TV, the display does have its limitations. It can only handle SD-resolution content, which is a bit of a downer. I would say that Redmi A2+ is made for everyday tasks and casual media consumption, where it still manages to deliver a satisfactory experience.

So, while this display might not be the top recommendation for heavy media consumption, it definitely punches above its weight for its price range, offering a delightful viewing experience for everyday use. It’s all about finding that sweet spot between affordability and functionality!

Performance

  • MediaTek Helio G36 4G (12nm)
  • Octa-core (4×2.2 GHz Cortex-A53 & 4×1.7 GHz Cortex-A53
  • PowerVR GE8320 GPU

When it comes to the performance of the Redmi A2+, Xiaomi has made some improvements from the A1 variant. The phone now features the Mediatek Helio G36 octa-core chipset, which is quite commendable for its budget-friendly nature. I played low-end games like Piano Tiles and Temple Run, and the performance was smooth without any lag, and I was quite satisfied.

However, it’s essential to keep realistic expectations, especially for heavy gaming enthusiasts. While the Helio G36 chipset is an upgrade, it still is not ideal for running high-end games like PUBG. During my testing, I noticed that even average games like Subway Surfer didn’t offer a completely smooth experience. The phone comes with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage, which is not sufficient for installing and running high-end games. However, we also get a 3GB RAM and 64GB storage variant.

Redmi A2+ performance

I tried scrolling through the TikTok app on the Redmi A2+, and it felt a bit laggy to me, which was unexpected. Initially, the phone seemed OK for the first couple of days, but after using it for a month, the performance degraded. Thus, it is only reliable for basic tasks like scrolling through Facebook and making calls.

One helpful tip is to install “lite” versions of applications for a smoother experience. Overall, for basic tasks, the Redmi A2+ is suitable, but it might not be the best choice for those who are heavy smartphone users.

Software and UI

  • Android 13 Go-Edition
  • MIUI

Xiaomi has provided Android 13 on the Redmi A2+, based on the GO edition. As a result, it includes only essential Android features and doesn’t have excessive bloatware.

However, one drawback I noticed is that background apps don’t run smoothly on this version. This can make multitasking a bit cumbersome. Despite this limitation, the Redmi A2+ still offers a decent user experience for basic tasks. The GO edition strikes a balance between functionality and the phone’s processing power. It may have some limitations, but it provides the necessary features for everyday use.

The Redmi A2+ supports only Wi-Fi 4G and single-band Bluetooth, operating on the 2.4 GHz frequency. It’s only suitable if you don’t heavily rely on high-speed internet or advanced Bluetooth peripherals.

Cameras

  • Dual (8MP + 0.08 MP depth)
  • 5MP selfie

Normal images

The camera performance is quite inconsistent, and it struggles to maintain consistent exposure in different lighting conditions. Furthermore, when zooming in, the pictures lack details and clarity.

Portrait images

As you can see, the Redmi A2+ faces challenges in properly detecting edges in portraits, resulting in less accurate portrait shots. Additionally, similar exposure issues persist just like in normal images; the camera struggles to maintain consistent exposures.

Selfie images

The Redmi A2+ features a 5MP front camera, which performs decently for basic selfie needs. While it may not deliver exceptional results or stand out in terms of clarity and vibrancy, it manages to provide passable selfie shots. The images appear slightly washed out, but considering its budget-friendly price, it’s understandable.

Lowlight images

In low light conditions, the Redmi A2+ suffers from significant noise. Additionally, the lack of sharpness in objects further impacts the overall image quality. These issues can be a drawback for those looking to capture clear and detailed photos, especially in challenging lighting situations.

Videography

Getting to the videos, the phone can only record 1080p 30fps videos from both the front and back. The videos came out extremely shaky and also, and the Redmi A2+ cannot maintain the lighting and exposure in the videos as well.

Battery

  • Non-removable Li-Po 5000mAh battery
  • 10W charging

Redmi A2+ battery

I am quite impressed with the Redmi A2+’s battery aspect, as it comes with a 5000 mAh battery. It is one of the strongest features of this budget smartphone Redmi A2+. I experienced using it for an entire day and still had some charge left with normal usage. Even on days when I spent hours scrolling through social media, the battery easily lasted a full day.

However, one downside is that it comes with a 10W charger so, it takes a bit longer to charge the phone fully.

Redmi A2+ for Primary Use: The Conclusion

As for myself, I would not consider purchasing the Redmi A2+ for my primary use. From my own experience, I believe it is best suited as a secondary smartphone. If I were looking for a budget-friendly option to fulfill basic needs such as making calls, occasionally social media scrolling, and watching YouTube videos, the Redmi A2+ would be a practical choice. Additionally, for individuals like office workers who require dual smartphones, this phone could serve as one of the best secondary options.

However, if I anticipate heavy usage or multitasking, the Redmi A2+ might not be the most suitable choice due to its limitations. The display may not be as satisfactory for tasks that require higher resolution; performance and storage capacity are also insufficient.

In summary, the Redmi A2+ serves well for essential tasks and basic use only and not for heavy usage and more demanding tasks. Nonetheless, for its price range, it offers a practical solution for individuals seeking a budget-friendly smartphone.
