This QR terminal lets you hear exactly how much you got paid

1

Nepali startup Yarsa Tech has launched a new type of QR terminal called “AudiQR”, which enables instant payment confirmation through voice. So let’s take a closer look at the Pokhara-based tech lab and its latest product.

AudiQR Overview:

As mentioned above, AudiQR is a QR payment terminal that confirms the transaction with live audio in Nepali language. For example, say someone makes a payment worth NPR 538 on an AudiQR terminal, then you’ll hear something like:

“पाँच सय अठतीस रुपैयाँ प्राप्त भएको छ।”

As such, it combines the ease of QR payment with the convenience of an audio confirmation. Right now, QR payments in Nepal still lack that sense of reliability and you have to check in with the vendor to make sure it went through. With AudiQR, this would be solved and you could be 100% sure every time.

Let’s briefly talk about the features of AudiQR by Yarsa Tech.

AudiQR features

Security

Being a product that was both designed and engineered in Nepal, Yarsa Tech claims AudiQR to be secure and reliable for years to come. Their device management system allows you to control and manage multiple AudiQR devices from a centralized dashboard. Additionally, you also get 5+ years of OTA firmware updates, 2 years of free repairs, and 1 year of warranty. Whereas an AudiQR terminal can even be disabled over the cloud.

Customization

AudiQR can be tailored to match your brand identity and is fully customizable. Yarsa Tech also offers the ability to add custom features to meet your company’s personalized needs. Including the ability to support any local language for transaction confirmation.

Battery

The QR terminals are available in different variants. Most of them have WiFi support while some feature GSM connectivity too. The company says an AudiQR can last over 12 hours thanks to its built-in 2,200mAh battery, although it’s also available without a battery pack that you’ll need to keep plugged in at all times.

Yarsa Tech: Company Overview

Yarsa Tech is an electronics company as well as an R&D (Research and Development) lab based in Pokhara, Nepal. They are focused on innovation and bringing the forefront of the latest technology in their products. As such, the company is dedicated to delivering high-quality products tailored to their customers’ needs. In their words,

Yarsa Tech is more than just a company. It’s a place where creativity and technology meet. We focus on turning ideas into real products that make life easier and more exciting in Nepal.

AudiQR Price in Nepal and Availability

The base variant of AudiQR — without GSM or battery backup — goes for NPR 2,200, while the one with both of them costs NPR 3,600. These prices are without VAT, by the way. And Yarsa Tech says it will sell these devices to financial institutions and digital wallet companies, which will then integrate their QR code and provide that to their customers.

AudiQR W1P (WiFi + battery) NPR 2,500

India imposes import ban on laptops, tablets & all-in-one computers

2

India recently placed a ban on the import of laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, and ultra-small form factor computers falling under HSN code 8741. Although not official, it is speculated that the Indian government made this move to strengthen domestic manufacturing. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Ministry of Commerce and Industry made this decision. It will impact the tech industry and consumers related.

Key Changes and Implications

Computing machines under HSN 8741 will now require a special import license. This restriction is an effort to place delays in the import of such products to motivate manufacturing inside the country.

The restriction doesn’t apply under the baggage rule. That is, if consumers buy these devices from online shops for personal use, they don’t need a special permit but still have to pay taxes. Moreover, import license exceptions grant approval for particular purposes like conducting research, development, testing, benchmarking, evaluation, repair, and re-export.

However, the implementation of these import restrictions is postponed until October 31, 2023. This adjustment allows manufacturers and importers more time to adapt to the new regulations.

What is the import restriction for?

The laptop import ban in India align with the government’s broader agenda to promote domestic manufacturing. This decision is similar to what was done before with color TVs. Back then, encouraging local TV-making worked well, so they’re trying it again with these devices.

The import restrictions are likely to pave the way for local electronics manufacturers to flourish. Even though a few parts could still be brought in from outside, local businesses might find it simpler to get special licenses that let them bring in those parts. This shift could provide a competitive advantage to Indian electronics companies and manufacturers.

Short-Term Challenges for PC OEMs

However, PC original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) might encounter challenges in the immediate future. According to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC), India’s traditional PC market saw a decline of 30.1 percent year over year in the first quarter of 2023. This restriction on imports may result in short-term supply disruptions. It will particularly affect brands that are heavily reliant on imports like Acer, Samsung, Panasonic, Apple, Lenovo, and HP.

Conclusion

In the long term, this policy shift could lead to increased local production of laptops, tablets, and personal computers, reducing India’s reliance on imported devices. The government’s strategy underscores its commitment to fostering a self-reliant and robust electronics industry, aligning with the larger vision of the “Make In India” campaign.

As the tech industry navigates these changes, consumers can expect to witness the evolution of the market and the emergence of new opportunities for local manufacturers.

Sony’s flagship headphones, WH-1000XM5, finally arrives in Nepal

Sony launched its flagship wireless headphones, the WH-1000XM5, back in May 2022. And finally, after more than a year, it is now available in Nepal as well. So, let’s get over the specs, features, official price, and availability of the Sony WH-1000XM5 in Nepal.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Overview:

First, the things it improves upon.

Design

The Sony WH-1000XM5 goes in a completely new direction with its design. After a long time, this series has received some sort of major redesign, which includes a new type of hinge that holds the earpads.

The thing is, its slimmer headband ends at a single contact point where the hinge attachment is hidden. While this allows for movement in every direction, its earcups aren’t collapsible like on the WH-1000XM4. Other than that, there are some smaller changes here and there, such as a slider-type switch for the power button, proximity sensor placements, and such.

Improved noise cancellation

Moving on, the Sony WH-1000XM5 doubles the number of microphones. It ships with an 8-microphone system and two chips to process all that information: QN1 and V1. Paired with the Auto NC Optimizer, the noise-canceling performance automatically optimizes based on external factors and wear conditions.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Noise Canceling

Enhanced sound quality

Another thing that’s improved is the audio quality. The decrease in the driver’s size from 40mm to 30mm might technically seem like a downgrade. However, Sony says they have better, more natural audio and much better high-frequency response.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Audio

And now, the things that aren’t much different.

AI processing

The WH-1000XM4 introduced “Edge AI”, which continues on in this iteration as well. This feature is used in conjunction with DSEE Extreme to upscale the compressed audio. In addition, the WH-1000XM5 utilizes four beamforming mics to pick up your voice and uses a custom noise-reduction algorithm for clearer phone calls.

Rest of the features

Apart from all these, Sony’s new WH-1000XM5 can automatically pause the music as you start speaking too. This is what the company calls the “Speak-to-Chat”. Similarly, it also supports wear detection so that the music pauses right away when you’ve put off the headphone. In addition, it has all the typical features such as voice assistant, “Headphones Connect” app support, etc.

Sony WH-1000XM5 360 Reality Audio

The Sony WH-1000XM5 also supports 360° Reality Audio and can be paired with two devices simultaneously. It even delivers Hi-Res audio, thanks to Sony’s own proprietary LDAC codec provided here. Other than this, this headphone offers up to 30 hours of battery life with ANC on (or 10 hours more with ANC turned off). It also supports quick charging, where just 3 minutes of charge gives you 3 hours of music playback.

Sony WH-1000XM5 Specifications:

  • Weight: 250 grams (approx.)
  • Headphone Type: Closed, over-ear
  • Driver Unit: 30mm, dome type, dynamic
  • Impedance: 48Ω (when connected via cable with the unit turned on), 16Ω (when connected via cable with the unit turned off)
  • Frequency Response: 4 Hz – 40,000 Hz
  • Frequency Response (Bluetooth Communication): 20 Hz – 20,000 Hz (44.1 kHz), 20 Hz – 40,000 Hz (LDAC 96 kHz, 990kbps)
  • Input: Stereo mini-jack
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth 5.2
  • Codecs: SBC, AAC, LDAC
