Facebook brings messenger rooms to facilitate group video calls

The current pandemic has affected our lives in many ways. One can’t just wander about outside and go on meeting people. So, you can only imagine the extra difficulties that we would have faced if it weren’t for our technological advancements. Most importantly in terms of communication. Currently, you can use Facebook messenger, zoom, or other online platforms to stay connected with people. Moreover, they also facilitate the work from home policy that many companies have now undertaken. Thus, to enable smoother communication in the upcoming days, Facebook has now introduced the new Messenger Rooms. And other significant improvements in its existing apps.

Since its inception, the Silicon Valley giant has always aimed to connect people. Per Facebook, more than 700 million accounts participate in video calls each day (Messenger & WhatsApp combined). Moreover, in the past few months, there has been a significant increment in the number of video calls and Live videos. So, it was only natural for the company to come up with a better solution for more seamless lives and video chats.

What are Messenger Rooms?

Firstly, let’s talk about the all-new messenger rooms. One will be able to start a group video call directly from their messenger or Facebook and invite people to join in. Moreover, you’ll be able to join the chat rooms even if you don’t have a Facebook account.

The Facebook messenger rooms can aid in our pursuit to go back to our daily routine amidst this chaos. For instance, you can host a book club or simply choose to invite all your friends for a chit-chat. Groups can too create a messenger room. One will be able to see the rooms open to them on their news feed.

In your messenger room, you can use features such as AR effects, 360-degree background, mood lighting, and more. Moreover, the talk is that eventually, the rooms will be able to accommodate up to 50 people with no time limit. This feature is expected to roll out this week in some parts of the world.

Data & Privacy Concerns

Facebook’s past actions have made users concerned about how the company handles our data. And it’s only reasonable for people’s privacy concerns to increase when they partake in a video call with 50 participants. Well, Facebook has pointed out some of the features of the messenger rooms that might ease your privacy concerns. So, let’s quickly go through them.

  • It has a locking feature, that is once the room is locked, no one else can then join the room
  • The room creator can remove a participant from the video call and once someone is removed the room will automatically lock itself
  • Participants can opt to leave any room as per their will
  • You can report a messenger group if you feel it’s violating the community guidelines
  • Also, if you have blocked someone on Facebook, you’ll not be able to join a room they are in. And the converse also holds true
  • Facebook claims that it will not watch or listen to whatever is shared in the messenger room
  • Room links are made up of random characters and digits at the end to lower the chances of hacking
  • Facebook will collect data from the rooms for service and improvement purposes
  • If you have joined a room without a Facebook account, then they will collect information such as your browser type and product usage information
  • There won’t be any ad in Rooms
  • Facebook Messenger Room is built on the encryption technology of the messenger app itself. It does not have an end-to-end encryption

You can read in detail about the privacy policy of the messenger rooms right here.

Improvements in other apps

As mentioned previously, Facebook has brought in significant updates in its other associated apps too. For instance, in WhatsApp, you will now be able to start an end-to-end encrypted group call with up to 8 people. Similarly, there have been certain improvements on Facebook, Instagram, and Portal lives too.

whatsapp gorup video call

On Facebook Live, the Live With option is back. That means another person can be added to your Live video. Furthermore, you can mark Facebook lives as an online-only event, and Pages can charge some amount to grant access to the live events. This will certainly be helpful to content creators and small businesses. Moreover, if you have a connectivity issue, you can choose to listen to only the audio of the live events. And lastly, they have added this new Facebook Gaming App through which you can live-stream your games directly from your phone.

Talking about the improvements in Instagram Lives, one can now comment on live videos directly from the desktop. Also, as soon as life is over, you’ll have the option to save it on IGTV so that it is available for a longer period. As for Portal, one will soon be able to go live from Portal to Facebook Pages and Groups.

Furthermore, Messenger Kids will be rolling out to more than 70 countries now. It is a parent-supervised environment where kids will be able to connect with their friends.

Wow, that’s a lot of updates. It’s really good that Facebook is trying their level best to help people stay connected during this pandemic. However, the major concern for most will be their data and privacy. Well, if they stay true to what they have officially declared, then maybe people will be less skeptical. However, that’s something only time will tell.

A mid-range smartphone today must have two features – 5G connectivity and a higher refresh rate. Vivo’s iQOO has taken this trend of making affordable 5G smartphones a step further by launching iQOO Neo3 5G, which comes with a 144Hz screen and is one of the cheapest smartphones to have Snapdragon 865 chipset.  As of now, it is only available in China, but we hope it is going to launch in Nepal, too, for China’s equivalent price.

Realme X50m 5G launched: One of the cheapest 5G smartphones!

The 5G wave has been hitting the globe mostly for good since, you know, it’s the next generation of cellular connectivity and all. Sadly, some people for some reason think it’s the cause of coronavirus. What?! Anyway, smartphone manufacturers have been pumping out 5G devices and most of them are quite expensive; usually hitting the thousand buck territory. But don’t worry, 5G is consistently getting more accessible. Both Qualcomm and MediaTek come up with cheap 5G-capable chipsets. Here, the “new” Realme X50m 5G is one of the cheapest 5G smartphones out there. I say “new” because it’s eerily similar to the regular X50, which is also Realme’s first 5G device launched a couple of months ago. Let’s take a look at the specs, features, expected price in Nepal of the Realme X50m 5G.

Realme X50m 5G Overview

Design & Display

In terms of the design of the phone, upfront, it looks exactly like the standard X50. The only visual difference comes in the form of the 3D hyperboloid “flair” in the back panel, which is a little flamboyant on the X50m. Besides this, both the back & front cameras are arranged similarly, there is a side-mounted fingerprint sensor but no headphone jack. The only noticeable distinction comes in the form of the camera setup, which I’ll get into in just a while.

Realme X50m 5G display 120hz refresh rate lcd panel

The display itself is a 6.57-inches IPS LCD panel with a 120Hz refresh rate and a 90.4% screen-to-body ratio. With a smoother display being a major requirement in a modern smartphone, it’s good seeing value-oriented brands like Realme bringing the tech to economical devices.

However, there is quite a debate between the people about what’s better: an AMOLED display with the standard 60Hz refresh rate, or an LCD panel with a superior refresh rate. Well, the answer depends on who you ask but I’d pick the latter any time of the day.

Performance & Memory

Getting to the performance, the Realme X50m 5G is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G, which is a 5G-ready gaming-centric chipset. This has been the go-to SoC for so many mid-range phones and OEMs are even opting for it instead of the flagship Snapdragon 865 for cost-reduction purposes.

Realme X50m 5G performance snapdragon 765g 5g sa/nsa

With its integrated Snapdragon X52 5G Modem-RF system, the Realme X50m supports both SA and NSA mode of 5G. Moreover, the phone also comes with Smart 5G technology which intelligently switches between 4G & 5G networks depending upon the availability to save power.

The 765G is also a gaming-oriented SoC which has an overclocked GPU compared to the vanilla 765. Furthermore, it makes use of the Snapdragon Elite Gaming features as well for reduced latency, increased app load time, etc. Realme X50m 5G also has an 8mm ultra-large liquid-cooled copper tube, which the company says can reduce the core temperature of the phone by about 12.5%.

Complementing the performance is either 6 or 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage. But unfortunately, you’re stuck with what you got as Realme hasn’t included an option to expand the onboard memory. The phone runs on the latest Realme UI based on Android 10 out-of-the-box.

Cameras

Now as I said earlier, the cameras are where the Realme X50m differs from the regular X50. The number of lenses is the same in both devices with quad-rear cameras and dual-front ones. All arranged vertically, the Realme X50m has a 48MP primary lens, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro lens, and finally a 2MP depth sensor. Instead of a macro or a depth sensor, it would’ve been better if Realme had kept the telephoto lens since “zoom” is so big right now.

Realme X50m 5G back cameras

Let’s move to the front of the phone. There’s a dual front camera housed inside a pill-shaped cutout on the top left side of the display. You get a 16MP primary lens and Realme has substituted the 8MP ultrawide sensor on the X50 with a 2MP depth sensor on the X50m.

Battery & Others

Finally, let’s talk about the battery. The Realme X50m 5G has the same 4200mAh cell with and supports 30W Dart charging. Realme says it can take the phone’s juice from 0 to 70% in just 30 minutes. Though the phone has a glass back, there is no support for wireless charging.

Additionally, it has a dual-mic array for better sound pickup & noise reduction in calls and videos. Realme X50m 5G has Dolby Sound & Hi-Res Audio on its Linear speakers in terms of audio. The phone also makes use of NFC and supports the company’s own payment system – Realme Pay.

AMD announces the Ryzen 3 3100 & 3300X CPU alongside B550 chipset

0

AMD unveiled its Ryzen 3000 series of desktop CPUs back in May of last year. It offered a wide range of CPUs starting from Ryzen 5 3600 up to Ryzen 9 3900X. Surprisingly, the company didn’t release a single Ryzen 3 chipset during the event. However, a year later, AMD has finally announced the first two Ryzen 3 chipsets under the 3000 series. The two new chipsets – Ryzen 3100 and 3300X are almost identical except for their clock frequency and will go head to head against Intel’s 9th Gen Core i3 processors.

Ryzen 3 3000 lineup

Ryzen 3 3100 and 3300X are the company’s latest offering in the Ryzen 3000 desktop processor series. Both the chipsets are based on 3rd gen 7nm Zen 2 architecture and are for gamers and content creators who are looking to build setup on a budget.

Ryzen 3 3100 and 3300X

Both Ryzen 3 3100 and 3300X are quad-core processors with 65 Watt rated TDP. It is the first time that Ryzen has included Simultaneous Multi-threading (SMT) in a Ryzen 3 CPU, enabling both the processors to have 4 cores and 8 threads. Both the processors come with 18MB cache memory (L2 + L3). As with other Ryzen 3rd Gen processors, the 3100 and 3300X also support the latest PCL 4.0. It promises an almost double data transfer rate than the industry-standard PCIe 3.0.

Check out the specs of Asus ROG Zephyrus G14.

The difference between the two is in their clock speed. The 3100 comes with a base clock frequency of 3.6Ghz with boosted speed up to 3.9Ghz, whereas 3300X is faster at 3.8Ghz base frequency and a maximum frequency of 4.3GHz.

Competition

The two new processors will take on Intel 9th Gen Core i3-9100. Comparing the specs, the Intel processor has 4 cores and the same 65 Watt TDP rating but falls behind in thread count and cache size. As it doesn’t support Hyper-threading, there are only 4 threads, and the cache size is limited to 6MB. The base clock speed is 3.6Ghz with turbo speed up to 4.2Ghz. But it does come with an integrated GPU which the Ryzen processors lack. According to the AMD, the Ryzen 3 3100 offers up to a 20% boost in gaming performance and 75% creators’ performance than the i3-9100.

B550 Chipset

Alongside the two new processors, AMD also announced a new B550 chipset. The latest chipset in the AMD 500 series will likely be the default choice of motherboard for the Ryzen 3000 series processors when it launches later this year. As it stands, AMD claims it to be the only mainstream chipset with PCIe 4.0 compatibility.

Motorola Edge & Edge+ launched: A return to the flagship market!

The flagship smartphone market is absolutely dominated by Apple and Samsung. Despite some decent competition from other companies like Huawei, Xiaomi, OPPO, etc. the two OEMs above make up the majority of the high-end market. Motorola, on the other hand, had taken a leave of absence from the expensive smartphone business for quite a while. And now, the company’s giving another shot at it with the new Edge+. It comes bearing all the flagship features you’d expect in a 2020 phone, and a “trendier” curved display (hence the name). Alongside the flagship Edge+, Motorola also unveiled a similar yet cheaper “Edge” with mid-range specs and such. Let’s take a dig at the specs, price, and more of the Motorola Edge & Edge+.

Motorola Edge+ Overview

Design & Display

Besides the internal specs themselves, the new Motorola Edge+ features a stunningly trendy edged display, and a small notched cut-out for the front camera. It also supports 15W wireless charging but disappointingly, isn’t nearly on par what other manufacturers are offering. For instance, OPPO’s new Ace 2 boasts 40W wireless charging. Interestingly, Motorola Edge+ comes with a water repellent design though the company didn’t bother to get an official IP rating. That may be a cost-saving tactic but I strongly believe Motorola should’ve gone with something official.

Motorola Edge+ DIsplay, Design

Now let’s talk about the display. While it’s definitely exciting for the company, we all know and have seen the edged display in other devices. Motorola is calling it “Endless Edge” and the panel itself is a 6.7-inches FHD+ OLED with a 90Hz refresh rate. Let’s quickly compare with some other non-Apple flagship phones of late. Samsung’s Galaxy S20 series supports smoother 120Hz in FHD resolution. More impressively, the new OnePlus 8 Pro & OPPO Find X2 Pro comes with 120Hz in QHD resolution out-of-the-box.

But don’t frown your face just yet. Motorola says the decision against a superior resolution was in favor of better power endurance. The Edge+ already has a large battery and this is only going to add to the durability. Asides from looking like a visual treat, the company has added some functionality to the edge itself. You can slide down the edge to open notifications, launch app, or configure shortcuts of your own. While Samsung itself is backing down from excessively curved displays, it’s kinda interesting to see how companies like Motorola & OnePlus are finally jumping in on the bandwagon.

Performance & Memory

Moving to the performance, the phone is powered by the latest and greatest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865. Though the chipset doesn’t have an integrated 5G modem, the dedicated X55 5G modem technically means it’s an inherently 5G SoC. With the industry pacing towards the next-gen cellular connectivity, one of the main selling points of Motorola Edge+ is 5G too.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865

The phone supports both sub-6GHz and the faster mmWave spectrum of 5G connectivity. However, only the US-version of the phone bolsters up mmWave 5G. Because of this, the availability of the device has remained limited (more on that later).

In terms of memory, there’s only one configuration of Edge+ with 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.0 storage. This decision seems a little weird because Motorola could’ve easily played around with memory options and put out cheaper variations of its first flagship smartphone in years. What’s worse? There is no SD card support either.

Cameras

Making its debut on a Motorola device is a 108MP sensor. A three-figure camera lens is all the rage these days thanks to Samsung’s S20 Ultra or Xiaomi’s Mi 10 Pro. Unfortunately, it’s not a telephoto lens and is the primary wide-angle sensor with 2 x 2-pixel binning technology. As a result, you can either take 27MP binned photos or go for 108MP shots themselves.

Motorola Edge+ Rear Cameras

There’s also a 16MP ultra-wide angle lens with a 117º field of view (FOV), which also doubles as a macro sensor. And finally, you have an 8MP telephoto lens with a 3x high-res optical zoom. Here, both the primary and the telephoto lens support Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). Finally, there’s a 3D ToF depth sensor as well. You can shoot up to 6K videos at 30fps, which is a little more practical than 8K in terms of the end-result itself.

Getting to the front camera, you have a 25MP selfie shooter sitting inside a small punch-hole cutout on the top left corner of the display. Like the main sensor at the back, the selfie camera also comes with quad-pixel technology.

Battery & Others

Finally, let’s talk about the battery. Motorola Edge+ has a big 5000mAh cell with support for 18W TurboPower wired charging, 15W wireless charging, and 5W wireless charging. And that’s simply not impressive in this day and age. I’ve already talked about the slow wireless charging but 18W wired charging for a thousand-dollar phone doesn’t really make sense. You know, 25W, 30W, 40W, or 45W should’ve been the case instead.

Another, kind of a big feature on the Edge+ is its speaker. The phone has dual stereo speakers tuned by Waves and Motorola is making big promises on this. According to the company, these are the loudest speaker ever put on a smartphone. Oh, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack too. So much for “lack of space” I guess.

Motorola Edge+ Specifications:

  • Body: 6.34 x 2.81 x 0.38 inches; 203 gm; Splash-repellant design

Motorola Edge Overview

Alongside the flagship Edge+, Motorola also announced a cheaper mid-range alternative called Edge. But how other manufacturers go with a smaller form-factor in the base variant of a lineup of smartphones, Motorola has kept it the same and simple. That means the regular Edge has the same 6.7-inches curved OLED panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, though it substitutes HDR10+ support for regular HDR10.

Motorola Edge design renders specs leaks price rumors launch

Another major difference as you’d expect lies on the chipset selection. The Motorola Edge has the Snapdragon 765G. It is based on the current industry standard 7nm process as well and has an integrated 5G modem. Unlike Edge+, this one only supports the sub-6GHz spectrum of 5G and not the faster mmWave 5G. There are two memory configurations of Motorola Edge: either 4 or 6GB of RAM with 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage.

Moreover, the standard Edge substitutes the 108MP primary lens with a 64MP sensor instead. Besides this, it shares the same telephoto (though with a reduced 2X zoom), ultra-wide-angle, and ToF depth sensor. Finally, there’s a smaller 4500mAh battery without support for wireless charging, unlike its expensive brother.

Motorola Edge Specifications:

  • Body: 6.36 x 2.80 x 0.37 inches; 188 gm; Splash-repellant design

Daraz, Bigmart collaboration: Q&A session with Daraz on how it’s delivering essential goods

The perils of the lockdown are far beyond the contamination of the virus only. Another undesired outcome of the whole ordeal in an underdeveloped country like ours is hunger. With people stuck at their homes and factories shut down, the scarcity of essential items like food is tearing the walls of survival in Nepal. The government has been working to prevent this but reports of people & families without adequate access to basic human resources in this grave situation are abundantly evident. At such times, many businesses with relevant infrastructure have shifted their area of operation to best suit the issue at hand. One such company is Daraz. Here, Daraz is delivering essential goods like food, sanitational utilities, etc. ever since the government initiated the lockdown.

Now usually, Daraz is famous for its large catalog of lifestyle products, electronics, etc. This crucially swift transformation in the business structure was made possible through a collaboration with Bigmart. It is one of the largest retail store chains n the country and the partnership with Nepal’s biggest e-commerce platform kinda seems like an obvious match. So we had a brief Q&A session with Daraz in regards to the whole process, and how it is providing its services during the lockdown.

How did the collaboration come to be? Why Bigmart?

“We were already in works of officially collaborating with Big Mart. Bigmart is one of Nepal’s biggest supermarket chains and they have excellent supply-chain channels through which we are confident we can fulfill the needs of every customer in this difficult time.”

What measures are being implemented to ensure everyone involved in the process of delivering the essential items don’t risk contamination?

“All our delivery riders are regularly educated on hygiene best practices and are also equipped with hand sanitizer for them as well as for our customers. We are following best practices from our Alibaba headquarters, the WHO, and the local authorities. Since the lockdown, we have also enforced a home-office policy to ensure the safety of our staff.

Daraz Bigmart essential goods items sample

Furthermore, our DEX Delivery Team is equipped with protective masks and sanitized disposable/polythene gloves. We are monitoring their health and well-being very closely with temperature checks, and they are instructed to strictly stay at home if they begin to feel unwell.”

How many delivery agents are on-field every day? How many deliveries do they make a day? What areas are you serving?

“We have deployed our full four-wheeled capacity to ensure we can deliver to as many people as possible, which right now stands at 14 vehicles. So, there will be 14 drivers and 14 delivery heroes. The company is delivering 800+ packages on the same day with a 95% success rate. We are currently delivering inside Kathmandu ring road and the following:

Kathmandu (outside Ringroad) Lalitpur (outside Ringroad) Bhaktapur (outside Ringroad)
Golfutar Nakhu, Bhainsepati Lokanthali
Budhanilkantha Harisiddhi Gaththaghar
Mandikhatar, Kapan Imadole Sano Thimi
Arubari, Attarkhel Dhapakhel Thimi
Gongabu, Dhapasi Sallaghari
Nepaltar, Manamaiju Kamalbinayak
Purano Guheshwari Suryabinayak
Kalanki, Tyanglaphat Jagati
TU Area

What sort of impact will this have on Daraz’s operations once the lockdown is lifted and the danger is over?

“COVID-19 has impacted the entire world and therefore us in Nepal as well. As any business would do, we completely reworked our strategy. In order to support the government lockdown, we have been focusing entirely on the delivery of grocery and basic essentials where we closed a partnership with Big Mart that we already had worked on for many months. We are optimistic about the future.

Especially now, we’ve also seen that in other markets affected by COVID-19, online shopping, and food delivery companies have played a vital role and are fully supported by the respective governments. We already have a very sophisticated operational infrastructure to support government initiatives regarding the delivery of essential items in Kathmandu valley. And the government also increasingly registers the importance of e-commerce. However, we also need to ensure supporting all the SMEs across the country right now to allow them to open their shops at least online to make sure they can generate income.

This is where the government needs to support with the right policies. I am optimistic that things can move very quickly now, similar to what we saw in other markets affected by COVID-19, where online shopping and food delivery companies are the country-wide backbone of society right now and are fully supported by the respective governments. Right now we all have to fight together for better days to come.”

Conclusion

And that’s it for the interview (told you it was going to be brief). How Daraz was capable of turning an unsought situation into an opportunity to help the community by delivering essential goods is truly commendable. Not only Daraz, but lots of other e-commerce platforms also have shifted their business focus and are now delivering essential goods. So, check out our compilation list of some of the online shopping platforms offering deliveries of essential goods during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Ncell brings “Use Service, Pay Later” offer to help people during this lockdown

The current lockdown has certainly been tough on many of us. One has to maintain a safe social distance between themselves and others to stay safe. However, it does bring up some hindrances in our daily activities, especially in terms of communication. Thankfully, telecom providers are doing their best to help us during these torrid times. We’d seen Ncell and Nepal Telecom bring bonus offers during the initial days of the lockdown. And now, Ncell has introduced a new “Use Service, Pay Later” offer for their customers.

What is the Ncell “Use Service, Pay Later” offer?

Under this, Ncell’s prepaid customers can buy a bundle pack for Rs. 5. The pack includes data voice calls and SMS. This offer commenced from last Friday, i.e. April 17 itself.

The specifics of this bundle pack include 250MB data, 25 mins voice call, and 25 SMSs. And as you might have guessed, the voice call and SMS can be used for communication within the Ncell network only. As far as the validity period is concerned, this bundle pack will be valid for 7 days from the period of activation. And the pack’s services can be used between 9 AM to 9 PM during the validity period.

The other condition that must be met by Ncell prepaid customers to benefit from this offer is related to their SIM card’s age. That is, the card has to be at least two month’s old. Furthermore, if your card has remained inactive for the entirety of last month, you can subscribe to the pack too.

Considering the fact that most people are finding it tough to recharge their mobile on time due to this lockdown, this offers certainly seems like a good one. However, one has to remember that nothing in this world comes free of cost. Thus, the cost of the pack will be deducted on your next recharge.

How to subscribe to the offer?

To activate the Ncell use service, pay later offer, you simply have to dial *9988*55# or *9988#. Thereafter, you’ll find the option to select the pack.

Additionally, Ncell has extended the validity of the Stay Home data pack too. Instead of 7 days, the pack will now be valid for 10 days. This pack includes 15GB of data at Rs. 230 only.

Ncell Use Service, Pay Later Offer – Summary

SIM Card Age More than 2 months

Everest base camp now equipped with 5G coverage, thanks to Huawei & China Mobile

With the optimal climbing season slipping by every day because of the global COVID-19 pandemic, the number of people heading to Everest is almost non-existent these days. Just a year ago, there was this news about “traffic-jam” on the world’s highest mountain. But it doesn’t look like history is repeating anytime soon. Anyway, the Everest isn’t done from making the headlines. That’s because a couple of Chinese telecom operators have successfully installed 5G base stations at the Everest Base Camp and other points in the vicinity.

3G, 4G, and now 5G in Mount Everest

Back in October 2010, China Mobile had already established a 3G connection thus facilitating video calls from the Base Camp of Everest. If you recall, a couple of months after this, a British climber tweeted from the peak of Mount Everest using a 3G network from Ncell. Just a few years later in 2013, the company turned on the first 4G tower in the Base Camp and demonstrated a live video stream in HD. And now, China Mobile has joined hands with Huawei to bring the latest generation of cellular connectivity to the top of the world.

The difficulties

Bringing 5G to Everest is no child’s play. Besides geographical constraints and the extremities of the weather itself, the Everest region also falls among the National Nature Reserve. This effectively forbids companies from operating heavy machinery or performing any sort of excavation around the area. While that definitely poses an obstacle for the project, it is a “necessary trouble” in order to preserve the sanctity of nature.

A total of 8 tons of technical and other materials were transported to the construction site. Among them, Huawei supplied the 5G Active Antenna Unit stations. And contrary to other company’s similar products, these are highly concentrated, small, and lightweight thus easing the entire installation process.

5G in full swing at Everest!

On 19th April 2020, China Mobile celebrated its 20th anniversary of independence after separating itself from the state-owned provider. And to mark this occasion, the company overhauled the 177km transmission line that connects the Base Camp to its main network. With a joint effort with Huawei, the world’s largest telecom operator (based on subscriber volume) inaugurated three 5G stations at the Everest Base Camp (5,300 meters) and Transition Camp (5,800 meters). This was only possible after the installation of five 5G NSA and SA antennas with a download speed of up to 1 gigabyte per second throughout the pre-determined points.

China Mobile’s transmission line currently powers three 5G base stations and three 4G base stations in the region. Moreover, the company will add two more 5G base stations at an even higher altitude by the end of this week (April 25). The network at Advanced Base Camp (6,500 meters) will then claim the record for the world’s highest installed 5G base stations. With this, the fellow mountaineers will be able to enjoy a stable 5G connection at the peak of Mount Everest!

Also read: Moving forward without Google: Huawei’s journey explained!

It took a total of 150 human resources to complete the project. From this, a team of 12 engineers is currently at the Base Camp providing 24 x 7 support. This includes network maintenance and optimization personnel. Moving to the cost itself, the company hasn’t publicized any details. However, field experts assume somewhere around $140,000 per 5G base station.

Apart from China Mobile, a couple of other Chinese telcos have also joined the “5G in Everest” venture as well. China Telecom installed a 5G base station at the Everest Base Camp on 13th April at an altitude of 5,145.3 meters. The company confirmed uplink and downlink speeds of 700Mbps and 223Mbps respectively. China Unicom had also announced that it has built two 5G base stations for network coverage in the observation deck and No. 1 Base Camp. It is a state-owned telecom operator in China with a pretty large user-base.

A bigger implication?

5G is growing more than ever and companies throughout the world pushing themselves to beat others to the market. Huawei has further cemented its lead in the 5G race with the recent feat. The company has been met with hindrances like the trade ban from the US. Despite that, Huawei’s 5G infrastructure is still far ahead of the ones of other non-Chinese firms like Ericsson and Nokia.

The successful installation and operation of a 5G network in a location riddled with geographical and topographical complications is a testimonial to the technological superiority of Huawei & the Chinese telecommunication as a whole.
