M1 for Mac

The notable difference between 2020’s MacBook pro is the SoC it’s baked with. The Neural Engine has 16 cores and is capable of doing 11 trillion operations per second. It provides up to 15x quicker machine learning performance with ML Accelerators.

Apple has also optimized the macOS Big Sur to make the most out of the new chip. Most of Apple’s Mac Software is now universal and the rest can run on the M1 chip using Apple’s Rosetta 2 technology. Similarly, it can also run iPhone and iPad apps directly on a Mac.

Performance Leap

Powered by the new M1 silicon, Apple is claiming the new 13-inch MacBook Pro to be 3x faster than the best-selling Windows laptop. It is also claimed to be the world’s fastest compact pro notebook. The new 13-inch MacBook Pro is now 2.8x times faster than its predecessor and offers up to 5x better graphics.

Design, Display

The new MacBook Pro has a 13.3-inch Retina display with P3 wide color. The touch bar remains just above the Magic Keyboard. Unlike the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro still features an active cooling system. It also comes with studio-quality mics. Moreover, the MacBook has an all-aluminium build and weighs 1.4kg. You can get it in gold, silver and space grey color variants.

Other features include Wi-Fi 6 support, Secure Enclave-powered Touch ID. It is available with up to 16GB of RAM and up to 2TB of SSD storage. The port selection continues to be very slim with just two Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports on the left side and a headphone jack on the right side.. Apple is claiming battery endurance of up to 20 hours.

Apple concluded its October “Unleased” event, introducing a couple of new products—including the new 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros. And they’re available in Nepal as well. Here, we will be looking at the specs, features, official price, and availability of the new Apple MacBook Pro 14″ in Nepal.

Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch Overview:

Design and Display

To note, this is the first time that Apple is offering a 14-inch MacBook Pro. It is 15.5mm thick and weighs 3.5 pounds. Apple says the aluminum used in the chassis is 100% recycled.

Here, you get a 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display. With the help of mini-LED backlights, it can attain maximum brightness of up to 1600 nits. There is a tiny bathtub-like notch upfront that contributes to the smaller bezels all around.

This display even supports 120Hz ProMotion that dynamically adjusts the refresh rate based on the content on the screen. Moreover, Apple has packed a total of 5.9 million pixels on this 14.2-inch screen, which is higher than the last-gen 16-inch MacBook Pro.

Also, Apple has replaced the Touch Bar from the 13-inch MacBook Pro with physical Function keys and a wider Escape key instead.

Performance

Over on the performance front, you get to choose between the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. These are the second-gen in-house silicon from Apple for its MacBook lineup. The M1 Pro features double the transistors compared to last year’s M1 chip. Likewise, it features a faster 8 – 10-core CPU and 14 – 16-core GPU.

Moreover, it maxes out at 32GB of unified memory with a memory bandwidth of up to 200GB/s. The CPU and GPU performances have been improved by 70% and 100% over the M1 as well. On the other hand, the M1 Max doubles those numbers to 64GB and 400GB/s, respectively.

It also features up to 24 – 32-core GPU and up to 4096 execution units, alongside a 10-core CPU. The new 14/16-inch MacBook Pro comes with up to two active fans. With the improved design, they have 50% better airflow even at lower fan speed.

macOS Monterey

Moving on, Apple has designed the new version of macOS to make the most of the new chips. macOS Monterey brings plenty of new features like FaceTime, AirPlay, Live Text, and Visual Lookup. Similarly, all Mac apps run natively on the M1 Pro/Max-powered MacBooks.

In addition, there are over 10,000 universal apps and plug-ins. Similarly, all the other apps based on Intel’s x86 architecture will run with the help of Apple’s Rosetta 2 translator.

The webcam also sees some improvement this time. Apple has upped the resolution to 1080p, while also using a superior sensor with a wide aperture. For audio, there’s a six-speaker sound system consisting of 2 tweeters and 4 force-canceling woofers. It supports Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos playback.

Getting to the battery, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro boasts up to 17 hours of backup. You also get fast charging support which is another first for the lineup. According to the company, you can charge the new MacBook Pro up to 50% in just 30 minutes. Moreover, Apple has also brought back the MagSafe charger on these MacBooks.

As for ports, you get three Thunderbolt 4/USB-C, an HDMI, an SD card slot, and a 3.5mm jack. The latter even supports high-impedance headphones.

Similarly, the new silicon has 20 billion transistors, which is 25% more than the M1 and a 10-core GPU as opposed to the M1’s 8-core.

This improves M2 above M1 on every front. Per Apple, it boosts the CPU performance by 18% and improves the GPU and Neural Engine by 35% and 40%, respectively. Not to forget, M2 also offers 50% greater memory bandwidth than M1 and up to 24GB of unified memory.

With such sheer power onboard, Apple claims that the M2 outperforms the 10-core Intel Core i7-1255U CPU combined with 16GB of memory by 1.9X. Similarly, its media engine now supports up to 8K H.264, HEVC, ProRes encode/decode, and has ‘increased bandwidth’ to playback multiple 4K and 8K streams more efficiently.

Design and Display

Even though the new MacBook Pro has a powerful chip inside, its design and other hardware features are identical to the previous model. This means you’re still getting a 13.3-inch Retina IPS display with a 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution. As expected, the screen also supports True Tone and the P3 color gamut. 

Moreover, the M2-based MacBook Pro also retains the Touch Bar on the top of the keyboard, making it the only Mac in Apple’s current lineup to have this feature.

The company has launched the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro with the all-new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors—both of which are available in Nepal. Design and Display

This time, the new MacBooks introduce the biggest design overhaul in the lineup’s history. It has a notch on the top for the upgraded 1080p camera that delivers 2x better performance in low-light, while the bezels on the sides and top are reduced to just 3.5mm now.

This notebook has a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with Apple’s 120Hz ProMotion adaptive refresh rate. Likewise, it packs 3456 x 2234 pixel resolution, 1600 nits of peak brightness, and a P3 wide color gamut support.

Performance

In terms of performance, the MacBook Pro 16-inch is available with two new silicons— the M1 Pro and M1 Max. Both of them are fabricated on the 5nm process as the M1 chip. Here, the M1 Pro features 8/10-core CPU and 14/16-core GPU with unified memory support of up to 32GB.

On the other hand, the M1 Max has a 10-core CPU while the GPU and unified memory support are doubled to 32-core and 64GB, respectively. As per Apple, the M1 Pro is up to 2x while the M1 Max is up to 4x faster than the company’s last-gen M1 chip in terms of graphics performance. For cooling, the new MacBook Pro 16-inch features a dual-fan setup.

Software

Besides hardware upgrades, Apple has optimized the new macOS Monterey to maximize the performance as well. This OS brings new features like Live Text, Visual Look Up, Focus, Quick Note, and features a new tab implementation on Safari—to name a few.

Moving on, all the Mac apps run natively on the two new chips, while there are over 10,000 universal apps and plug-ins. Like before, non-native apps will run using Apple’s Rosetta 2 translator. Moreover, users can now run iPhone and iPad apps directly on the MacBook.
