Here’s what to expect from tomorrow’s “Scary Fast” Apple event

0

After unveiling the iPhone 15 series alongside Watch Ultra 2 and Watch Series 9 about a month ago, Apple is all set for another one. While the last event focused on the announcement of new iPhones and Apple Watches, this one will be more computer-centric. This Apple Event is titled “Scary Fast.”, and we will discuss what we know about it so far!

Apple “Scary Fast” Event Overview:

As mentioned earlier, this Apple event will be computer-centric, such that, it will focus on a new set of chips alongside an upgrade for the iMac. Thanks to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, we have some initial information on the highlights of the event.

New Mac M3 Chips

Apple will be announcing a set of three new chips, namely M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max. All these chips will apparently be based on 3nm fabrication technology. This is quite a feat from Apple, considering these chips have been quite hard to obtain. Nonetheless, we expect this new line of chips to bring a significant performance boost over their predecessors. We have some insight into the architecture of these new chips as well.

M3 Chip Series

The regular M3 chip is said to feature eight CPU cores altogether alongside 10 graphics cores. Similarly, the M3 Pro might arrive in various configurations starting with 12 CPU cores and 18 graphics cores. The higher-end variant of the same might boast 14 CPU cores and 20 graphics cores. Lastly, Apple has supposedly tested the M3 Max chip with 16 + 40 CPU and graphics cores respectively. A watered-down version of the Max chip may feature ‘only’ 32 graphics cores.

iMac Upgrade

iMac is Apple’s all-in-one desktop computer that debuted back in 1998. The iMac received its latest upgrade over 2 years ago with the M1 chipset. It’s about time to give this device an upgrade it deserves! And since this year marks the silver jubilee for the product, what better occasion to do so?  All in all, we expect an announcement relating to an upgrade in the upcoming Apple Event.

When and where to watch the Apple “Scary Fast” Event?

You can watch the Apple “Scary Fast” Event for absolutely free on their official website and YouTube. The event will commence on 30 October 2023, 5:00 PM PST. This correlates to 31 October 2023, 5:45 AM here in Nepal.

With Snapdragon X Elite, Windows laptops have a promising future

0

Arm is still not a popular name in the world of Windows PCs. It has not gained as much attention as the x86-based mobile CPUs from Intel and AMD. But Qualcomm hopes to change all of this with its new Snapdragon X Elite platform that has a custom Arm-based “Oryon” CPU. Let’s find out more.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite Overview:

12 cores (4nm)

Based on a 4nm process, the Snapdragon X Elite features 12 high-performance “Oryon” CPU cores, all clocked at up to 3.8 GHz. Out of which two of them can be boosted up to 4.3 GHz as well.

Better than the competition?

And with this, Qualcomm claims the Snapdragon X Elite has 2x the multi-core performance of the Intel Core i7-1360P CPU at ISO power (meaning at the same power level). Supposedly, this CPU matches Intel’s peak performance with 68% better power efficiency. Whereas compared to the top-of-the-line Core i9-13980HX, this Oryon CPU reportedly manages slightly faster single-threaded CPU performance too.

That too when consuming 70% less power!

Snapdragon X Elite vs i7 13th Gen CPU

Qualcomm even compared this new processor with Apple’s Arm-based M2 chip, with the Snapdragon allegedly coming out to be 50% faster in multi-threaded performance. However, this would not be fair competition since M2 has an 8-core CPU compared to X Elite’s 12-core setup.

When taking the fight to M2 Max which has a 12-core CPU, the X Elite is apparently 13.60% faster in terms of single-core performance while consuming 30% less power.

Snapdragon X Elite vs Apple M2 chip

What about the GPU?

As for the graphics, X Elite’s integrated Adreno GPU reportedly beats AMD’s RDNA3-based Ryzen 9 7940HS by 80% while also being 80% more power-efficient.

Other than this, it has a peak performance of up to 4.6 TFLOPs and it supports DirectX 12 API as well. The Adreno video processing unit (VPU) it incorporates offers support for 4K 60 fps 10-bit encodes and decoders for H.264, HEVC (H.265), and AV1 file formats.

In addition, the Snapdragon X Elite goes big in terms of AI as well. Qualcomm has included a Hexagon NPU here that’s capable of processing 45 trillion operations per second (TOPs). And it can run generative AI models with over 13 billion parameters on-device at 30 tokens per second.

What else?

Apart from that, Snapdragon X Elite supports up to 64GB LPDDR5x RAM with up to 136 GB/s bandwidth. As for storage, it works with PCIe Gen4, UFS 4.0, and SD 3.0 protocols. Furthermore, wireless connectivity options include WiFi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, alongside a Snapdragon X65 5G modem for cellular connectivity (up to 10 Gbps download speed).

Snapdragon X Elite Summary

Other features of this chip include Qualcomm Aqstic DAC for lossless audio playback and Qualcomm Spectra ISP (image signal processor) with support for two cameras (36MP) and 4K HDR video capture. It supports USB4 specifications as well for data transfer, power delivery, and display output.

Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite Specifications:

XReal’s latest AR glasses with micro-OLED display launched globally

XReal, formerly known as NReal, has globally launched two versions of its next-generation AR glasses in the form of Air 2 and Air 2 Pro. In this article, we will be discussing the XReal Air 2 and Air 2 Pro in more detail, including their specs, features, availability, expected price in Nepal, and more.

XReal Air 2 and Air 2 Pro Overview:

Design and display

Design-wise, both the models of XReal’s new AR glasses look like, well, sunglasses. Their build is pretty similar to regular sunglasses except for a display underneath. The 0.55-inch micro-OLED panel from Sony is the main highlight of both the Air 2 and Air 2 Pro as XReal is the first adopter of this display technology. It is quite sharp with a 4,032 ppi (a 21% rise from its predecessor), while it apparently gives you a view equivalent to that of a 330-inch display.

XREAL Air 2 Design

Moreover, the XReal Air 2 series is available in grey and red color options. The company also provides 7 different sticker options for additional personalization. They have also managed to cut the weight of Air 2 to only 72gm (while Air 2 Pro weighs 75gm) by using materials like magnesium alloy. Furthermore, the company has shifted more of the device’s weight towards the temple. As a result, XReal’s new AR glasses have better weight distribution and achieve better balance.

Features and more

In terms of audio, these AR glasses support X-Spatial Sound 2.0, which offers better mid-low-frequency sounds and prevents sound leakage too. These glasses have also received TÜV Rheinland certifications for color accuracy, eye comfort, low blue light, and zero flicker. You can connect these glasses via the onboard USB Type-C port too.

XReal Air 2 Design 2

These new AR glasses also have a companion handest called the “XReal Beam”, which was released earlier this year. You can use this handset as a remote control for the AR glasses. The beam comes pre-installed with two tablet versions of apps from Bilibili and iQiyi.

Other than this, almost all the aspects of the XReal Air 2 and Air 2 Pro are the same. The only difference is that the Air 2 Pro has three levels — 0%, 35%, and 100% — of electrochromic dimming. XReal calls it “Immersion Control” and with this, you can control how much of the outside world you can view. With 0% letting it all in while setting it to 100% blocks the view to the outer world completely.

XReal Air 2 and Air 2 Pro Price in Nepal and Availability

While these AR glasses were originally exclusive to China, they’re now available in the US too. With the Air 2 starting at USD 399 and the Pro model at USD 449. Although highly unlikely, we expect the XReal Air 2 and Air 2 Pro price in Nepal to start at NPR 63,699 and NPR 71,599, respectively if they launch here.

XReal AR Glasses Price in USA (Official) Price in Nepal (Expected)
XReal Air 2 USD 399 NPR 63,699
XReal Air 2 Pro USD 449 NPR 71,599
XReal Air 2 + XReal Beam USD 499 NPR 79,599
XReal Air 2 Pro + XReal Beam USD 549 NPR 87,599

However, all these products have a common thing — they cost an arm and a leg! But now, the paradigm finally seems to be shifting with the Huawei Pocket P series and Samsung Galaxy Z FE!

Budget Foldables Rumours Roundup:

Huawei Pocket P series

Huawei has been producing one of the most impressive foldable smartphones in the market. They released the Huawei Pocket S last year, which is one of the most budget-friendly foldables. But now the Chinese tech giant is one-upping themselves with an entry-level foldable in the works.

Huawei Pocket S

Rumours have it, that Huawei will be launching this foldable under the moniker of the “Pocket P” series. This scoop comes from the tipster, Revengus, who states that this foldable will come out in the first half of the year 2024. Furthermore, they also say that this foldable will have a price tag of USD 735 or lower. This will put the Huawei Pocket P series in the same price range as the Techno Flip V. Adding on, the global availability of the device is yet unknown.

Samsung Galaxy Z FE

It is well-known that the FE series are watered-down versions of much more potent offerings from Samsung. Reports say that Samsung is working on an FE version of its own foldables — which are held as the best in the line. This is the extent of information available regarding the Galaxy Z FE as of now.

However, sources are speculating this budget-friendly foldable from Samsung will go live alongside its premium folds. Such that, Samsung will probably unveil the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and the Galaxy Z Flip 6 somewhere around August 2024.

Conclusion

As a person who loves the concept of a folding phone, but however, not quite able to afford it — this latest development absolutely excites me! In order to cut down the prices, companies will probably opt for less capable hardware. Given that, foldable phones already make quite a few compromises on their hardware compared to their flagship counterpart, I am dying to see how these new affordable folds will unfold to be! *pun intended*
