Microsoft is working on a secret AI chip to power ChatGPT

Tech giant Microsoft has been working on a secret AI chip to further boost the development of its AI products. Named after the Greek goddess of wisdom “Athena”, this is among the first moves by Microsoft to make an in-house chip to power its generative AI endeavors, including ChatGPT.

Microsoft AI chip Athena: Overview

According to a recent report by The Information, Microsoft has been working on an AI chip to help train large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and to support inference. The company has been reportedly working on Project Athena since 2019. Microsoft’s move can be understood as a desire to accelerate AI development.

By potentially making this AI chip cheaper and more powerful, it can cut down costs regarding development and operation. For reference, other tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Meta have been producing their in-house AI chips for some time now.

The “why?”

Currently, AI chips needed for projects like ChatGPT are mainly supplied by NVIDIA. The company’s GPUs like the A100, P100, and H100 are popular options when it comes to machine learning. But with the rise in popularity of AI, it’s no wonder these GPUs are getting more and more expensive.

Since Microsoft is planning to go all in on AI with Github Copilot, Office Copilot, Bing, and other projects, they would want to cut down on processing costs as much as possible. Microsoft’s goal with Athena is not to replace NVIDIA’s GPUs but to simply reduce its dependency, while also improving efficiency in cost and power.

The “when?”

The said AI chip is currently not in the development phase, but has rather entered the testing stage already. According to the report, a handful of Microsoft and OpenAI employees have their hands on the Athena AI chip and have been testing it for a while.

As mentioned in the same report, the company has also developed a roadmap for the chip, with timelines for future generations of Athena. They will roll out the chip on a larger scale to OpenAI and Microsoft employees early next year. As for others, it’s not clear if or when Microsoft will launch this “secret” AI chip for public use.

As aforementioned, Microsoft is looking to further strengthen its leadership in the AI space with this move. Its 49% stake investment in OpenAI has hit the home run for the company. And with the new Bing, Office, and Github Copilot, we can see that Microsoft has big plans ahead in this field. These products are bound to be massively popular and Microsoft trying to cut away from its NVIDIA dependency will only help accelerate this growth.

Nokia has retained the candy bar form factor for the 2023 version. So, you get the full number keypad with bold button fonts on this bar phone. Talking of the display, the phone sports a 1.8-inch TFT screen with a 120 x 160 pixels resolution.

Xiaomi 13 Lite Review: Too “Lite” or Just Right?

Xiaomi 13 Lite is the most affordable member of the Xiaomi 13 series starting at 400 dollars or Rs. 55,000 here in Nepal. It might also launch in India very soon for a price of Rs. 32-33,000 Indian rupees.

And for the price, the Xiaomi 13 Lite, for me, genuinely doesn’t bring any “WOW factor” to the table. There is some really good stuff about this phone, but there are equally bad choices being made here. Ok, me being a positive person, let me get started with the good stuff of the 13 Lite.

Design

If you remember, Xiaomi’s “Lite” series has always given a little more focus on the design side, and it is definitely evident on this phone too. It comes with a premium glass body and a curved design.

But unlike its expensive siblings, the 13 Lite has a lightweight form factor and a uniform weight distribution across its chassis which makes it plenty comfortable to hold.

Not to mention, the Xiaomi 13 Lite is extremely slim and sleek too so it does not take up a lot of space in your pocket. Plus, the color options are also quite refreshing. I have this cute Blue variant while there’s Pink and Black choices that look equally good too.

Battery

However, this slim design does come with some disadvantages. Because the phone is really thin there are two things that the Xiaomi 13 Lite does not do well in. No. 1 – it has a smaller 4,500 mAh battery which is not very enduring if you are a heavy user.

And second, I found the phone to have some heat management issues as well. Let me explain them one by one. Objectively, a 4500 mAh battery is a good enough battery capacity for any smartphone. But the problem with this phone is that the battery optimization on it is not very strict, hence, you are losing a lot of battery on background processes and apps.

Xiaomi 13 Lite UI

On top of that, its screen can only switch between 60 and 120Hz refresh rates, so it’s not able to conserve a lot of power because of which I have only been getting around 4.5 to 5 hours of screen on time during heavy usage out of this phone. That converts to less than a whole day of usage, so it’s safe to say that the battery backup on the 13 Lite is average.

But do keep in mind that I am a heavy user and if you are someone with a normal usage pattern, you might get a better backup from it.

Performance

 The Xiaomi 13 Lite comes with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset which apart from being an efficient and powerful performer in regular everyday tasks, is also a great mid-range gaming chipset. Keeping that in mind, Xiaomi has provided a custom stainless steel vacuum chamber for improved heat dissipation.

But sadly, in my tests, that heating solution did not turn out to be very effective while gaming. Normal everyday usage on this phone is fine, with no issues, but while playing some of my favorite games, like PUBG Mobile, Genshin Impact, and Mech Arena, the phone would heat up to 40 degrees or more just in 15 minutes into the games.

Even the Exynos 1380 on the Galaxy A54 was not able to manage its thermals very well in my gaming tests, but on average the Xiaomi 13 Lite has slightly higher temperatures than the A54.

Thankfully, the good thing is, it does not throttle the performance – the phone gets hot, yes, but you won’t see a dip in performance levels here. So I was able to get consistent fps stability and frame rates in all the games I tested.

Genshin Impact ran smoothly in medium settings with stable 30 fps while I was able to push up to HDR graphics and Ultra frame rates in PUBG mobile which gave me a smooth 40 fps gameplay. This is much better than something like the Samsung Galaxy A54 which, as I mentioned in my review, is not optimized for gaming at all.

Display

Moving on, the display on the Xiaomi 13 lite is top-notch. It’s a 6.5-inch AMOLED screen with all the perks that a good display should have like 12-bit colors, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR 10+ & Dolby Vision certification, and 1920 Hz PWM Dimming.

I found its display to be even better than the Galaxy A54 especially when playing Dolby Vision content on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Other than that, the display is sufficiently bright too and I found no issues regarding optimization either, so it’s safe to say that Xiaomi has done a good job here. Its in-display fingerprint sensor also works fine, as it’s fast and accurate!

You might also have noticed the dual camera cutout up top that is kind of really rare these days. I wouldn’t say it’s extremely obtrusive while watching content but yeah, it is noticeable nonetheless.

But that wasn’t as big of an issue for me. The bigger issue was that the phone only comes with a single-speaker setup. I mean, a premium phone, in 2023, lacking stereo speakers is such a letdown. As a result, the overall audio quality here is just average. With such a great screen, I really, REALLY wish that Xiaomi had provided better-quality speakers. I think Xiaomi is being complacent here!

Camera

Anyway, talking about the cameras, at the back, you get a 50MP shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 2MP macro sensor.

I have clicked a lot of photos with the Xiaomi 13 Lite and if I had to rate its overall camera capabilities, I would give it a 7.5 out of 10. You see, it has a good primary camera. The detail levels it is able to maintain are good, and the color reproduction is also pleasing most of the time, in fact, it is able to produce accurate colors of flowers and foliage in comparison to the Galaxy A54 which generally tends to overdo the colors.

The Xiaomi 13 Lite boosts the whites and brightens the pictures which seems quite appealing to the eyes. It does a great job during night time too. The pictures from it are sharp and have less noise than Samsung.

But as expected, its 8MP ultra-wide images are just okay with a narrower field of view, and subpar details.

Portraits, on the other hand, are extremely beautified. Here is a picture shot of the Xiaomi 13 Lite and then another picture shot of the Galaxy A54. The smoothing level on the 13 Lite is just mind-blowing.

Selfie and Videos

Up front, Xiaomi has gone with an unusual camera setup with a 32MP ultra-wide camera, that also doubles as a wide camera by cropping in and then there’s an 8MP depth sensor. Plus, you get dual flashes here for enhanced selfies and selfie videos. I guess the idea behind this is to appeal to TikTok and Instagram content creators.

And with it, selfies are not bad. They are beautified like the portraits, but the result is decent I would say. And you can change the field of view without hampering the quality, which is pretty neat.

But I think it would have been much better for the content creators if Xiaomi had included a higher res video shooting ability as the selfie camera on the Xiaomi 13 lite can only shoot up to 1080p 60 fps.

From the back camera, you can shoot up to 4k 30 fps. The quality and stabilization are fine thanks to EIS and a bit of cropping magic. The ultra-wide video, however, is just limited to 1080P, unlike Samsung which gives 4k options in the ultra-wide camera too.

So, as I said earlier, if I had to rate the 13 Lite’s camera, I would give it 7.5 vs 8.5 on the Galaxy A54 because the A54 has a bit more versatile camera prowess.

MIUI

Alright, before moving to the conclusion, there are 2 more things I need to cover, software and a few extras. Software-wise, when it comes to the overall experience, MIUI is not one of my favorites. And this year, Xiaomi has been like very very bad with shipping Android versions out of the box as even the newer launches come with Android 12 and not the latest Android 13.

Plus, how many years of software updates the Xiaomi 13 Lite will receive is still unclear. And since the 13 Lite is on Android 12 and the max Xiaomi offers is 3 years of OS update. So, we are looking at a max of Android 15 here, whereas you are guaranteed to receive updates up to Android 17 on Samsung and Oneplus phones.

Talking about extras, you get a good vibration motor on this phone and more importantly, I cannot stress enough on how useful the IR blaster on it has been to me. And I think I missed talking about it, but the phone comes with a 67-watt charger inside the box that takes the phone from 0-100% in about 50 minutes.

Conclusion:

Okay, to conclude, my experience with the Xiaomi 13 Lite has kind of been like a mixed bag. It definitely has some good stuff up its sleeves but some of the choices Xiaomi has made here are very strange.

Xiaomi 13 Lite Camera

For example, the choice of the chipset is great here, but its cooling system is not as effective. It has a great display, but the speaker is just average. It has a good slim design but the battery life is pretty average. But more importantly, Xiaomi’s software commitment is a big big question mark.

So honestly, all of these things are holding me back from recommending this phone to you guys. I just think there are better options out there right now and with the likes of Oneplus Nord 3, Google Pixel 7A, and Realme GT Neo5 SE launching soon, it’s going to be even more difficult!

DJI Air 2S is the successor to Mavic Air 2, but it drops the Mavic branding just like the Mini 2. The latest drone comes with a bigger sensor, can record 5.4K video, and has improved autonomous flying. In this post, we will be discussing the specs, features, official price, and availability of DJI Air 2S in Nepal.

DJI Air 2S Overview:

DJI Air 2S is the exact same size as its predecessor but it’s heavier at 595 grams. In its unfolded state, it measures 183 x 253 x 77mm which changes to 183 x 253 x 77mm when folded. Even under this, the height of the Air 2S is slightly less than that of the Mavic Air 2. This should make carrying it around easier.

Moving on, the DJI Air 2S now has a 1-inch image sensor that is twice as big as the one in its predecessor. The pixel size is also larger at 2.4µm. With this, the drone can capture still images of up to 20MP. In terms of videos, it can record 5.4K videos. The drone also supports new zoom technology that allows it to go up to 4x zoom at 4K 30fps.

Users can choose to record in two supported formats – H.264 and H.265. Similarly, available video color profiles are Normal (8-bit), D-Log (10-bit), and HLG (10-bit).

DJI has also introduced a new feature called MasterShots which automatically plans the flight path while recording video. Once the flight is completed, the drone merges the footage under one theme. In addition to this, you get the usual FocusTrack, QuickShots, and Hyperlapse features as well.

Battery and Safety features

The Air 2S comes with two additional environment sensors that allow the drone to perceive its surrounding in four directions. Additionally, the Advanced Pilot Assistance System has also been upgraded to v4.0 which unlocks a wider Field of View (FOV) for the drone. It can also warn pilots of ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) signals from surrounding aircraft. Other safety features include RTH (Return-To-Home) and GEO 2.0.

Motorola Moto G73 Review: A Performer!

After a long time, it really felt like Motorola had finally made a comeback in the smartphone market last year. I was especially impressed with its budget-friendly “G” series phones like the Moto G52 and Moto G71, which were a couple of great bargains for the price. So naturally, I had high expectations with what Motorola had in store for 2023. And when they launched this guy, the Motorola Moto G73, I ordered it right away to prepare this review. It’s priced at Rs. 18,999 for the sole 8/128GB variant, and after using the phone for about two weeks, here’s what I think about it.

Performance

The first thing that’s absolutely great about this phone is its performance. For a phone under Rs. 20,000, the Moto G73 earns a straight A from my side in this department.

"Motorola

If you are familiar with the smartphone industry, you might know that brands have been compromising on the performance side of things in their budget phones to make room for 5G connectivity. Unfortunately, this trend is still present in 2023.

Just look at some recent launches like the Redmi Note 12, Realme 10 Pro, and OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite for that matter. To accommodate 5G, they all feature rather average processors for their price.

But Motorola is offering plenty of powerful MediaTek Dimensity 930 chips here, all the while including support for 13 5G bands. And if you compare its performance with the Snapdragon 695 or Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 which are common in this price range, you can clearly see that the Dimensity 930 wins by a great margin.

A bit underclocked

Interestingly enough, the Dimensity 930 actually has underclocked Cortex-A78 CPU cores compared to the Dimensity 920. And while this does reflect in benchmarks, it is still a capable chipset in its own right.

And I have to say I got a much better everyday performance here than the likes of Redmi Note 12 or Realme 10 Pro. I can instantly notice how fast apps open, and how effortless multitasking is. Pair that with a well-optimized 120Hz refresh rate, I had a great experience with this phone.

Gaming

Dimensity 930 also unlocks a great gaming experience. Although not at the highest of settings, you can easily play even the most demanding games like Genshin Impact in medium settings with 30 fps.

The phone does get warm at the back reaching around 40ºC after 15 minutes into the game, but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a heating issue. More importantly, this doesn’t throttle the performance and the phone’s temperature cools down very quickly too.

"Motorola

I even ran a CPU throttling test for 15 and 30 minutes to further check the sustained performance of this new chip. And I am happy to report that the Moto G73 never throttled below 90%.

Anyway, PUBG Mobile is also playable with 40 fps at Balanced graphics and Ultra settings. You can also crank up the setting to HD graphics for better details, but this will bring down the gameplay to just 30 fps. Other high-fps optimized games like Critical Ops and Mech Arena are playable at 120 fps, so that’s good too!

Battery

  • 5000mAh battery with 30W charging

Apart from performance, the Moto G73 has also impressed me with its battery backup. Even with my rigorous usage pattern which includes hours of gaming and binge-watching movies, alongside other daily tasks, I was still able to get around 8 hours of screen-on time here! Not only this, but the overnight battery drain on this phone is also around 2-3% only.

"Motorola

So yeah… Motorola has optimized the phone very well to deliver a solid battery backup. And in terms of charging, the 30W adapter that’s available inside the box takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes to fully juice up the phone.

Design

Moving on, another aspect that I’m quite fond of this phone is its design. I know, it doesn’t look that different from other “Moto G-series”, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I think, just like Samsung, Motorola is also trying to create its own visual identity by offering a similar design across all G-series smartphones. And I see no harm in that.

"Motorola

In fact, the build quality is actually of greater importance to me. And I must say, the G73 is a well-built smartphone. Of course, for a budget device, it has an all-plastic build material. But despite this, there are no noticeable creaks here and there, and it doesn’t feel that cheap as well.

I am also someone who prefers using the phone without a cover. And to my surprise, the Moto G73 has survived a relatively clumsy lifestyle with nothing to show for it. Its white finish hasn’t gotten that dirty either, although I would still recommend wrapping it around a case because—after all—it’s a plastic body that can pick up scratches at any time.

Display

Now, while the phone’s back panel looks good enough, the story isn’t the same when coming to the front. There’s a noticeable chin at the bottom, and this hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera is also not the smallest I have seen on a smartphone. I remember praising the Moto G52 for having symmetrical bezels all around, but I really don’t understand Motorola’s take here.

"Motorola

Even the actual quality of this screen is not that great. First off, it’s not AMOLED but rather an IPS display. So coming from an OLED panel on last year’s G72, this feels like an unnecessary downgrade to me. But even for an IPS panel, I found its quality to be average at best. The thing is, Moto G73’s screen is just not that bright and its viewing angle is not that great as well.

Audio and Haptics

Still, it is good enough for indoor usage and you can easily stream Full HD content on Netflix. To further enhance your movie-binging experience, Motorola has also included a stereo speaker setup with support for Dolby Atmos. And they can get sufficiently loud, while there’s no such issue as distortion at the highest volume. Of course, there’s little to zero bass to enjoy here, but I’m not nitpicking here!

However, Motorola could have definitely given a better vibration motor. Its feedback is quite buzzy and I found it to be a bit irritating, to be honest. As a result, I turned it off entirely while I was using the phone.

Cameras

Regardless, let’s talk about the cameras now. And historically, this is the one aspect where Motorola phones have not performed that well. However, the company is trying to change things with the G73. Here, instead of offering useless 2MP sensors, Motorola is focusing on improving the rest of the camera hardware. As per them, the G73’s primary camera uses Ultra Pixel technology for brighter, sharper photos.

Normal Images

And as promised, the output from its 50MP camera looks quite good. I wouldn’t say they are bad at all. I like the level of contrast and dynamic range the images are able to pull off. And the photos have a wider field of view too.

vs Poco X5

Comparing the pictures of the G73 with the similarly priced Poco X5, the G73 was able to perform much better in every aspect, whether it be colors, contrast, exposure handling, or field of view.

Ultrawide

Just like normal images, ultrawide photos from the Moto G73 are also better in terms of dynamic range and sharpness.

Nighttime

The same holds true for nighttime images, where Motorola’s outputs are far better than those of the Poco X5. And if you’re shooting night images, I would recommend directly using the Night Mode as it maintains a good balance of sharpness and exposure, all while retaining a good amount of details.

Portraits

In terms of portraits, there is a lot of improvement on Motorola’s part. I found the images to be highly inconsistent in maintaining skin tone and exposure. Sometimes the portraits look okay, but most times they are straight-up bad.

Overall, if I have to rate the camera prowess of the Moto G73, I would say that it has a good primary camera for general usage both during daytime and night time minus the subpar portrait shots.

Videos

But like every other budget phone, its video capability is average at best. While the Dimensity 930 chip on the phone supports 4K recording, Motorola has limited the resolution to 1080p@60fps. Even here, exposure isn’t maintained well, and there are slight jerks in the video every now and then. Selfie videos are also capped at 1080p@30fps, and while the skin tone looks decent, it struggles to maintain background exposure.

Motorola Moto G73 Review: Conclusion

Okay, it’s time to wrap up this review now. So is this smartphone a viable option in the sub-20K price bracket? I would say, yes. It has the best-in-class performance, its battery life is quite awesome, and even the cameras are pretty decent here. And how can I forget its clean stock Android experience with few Motorola-exclusive features?

So yeah, the software is also a big win for me when it comes to Motorola phones. However, I do hope the company improves its software update policy since this thing will only get a year of platform updates. This means it’ll taste Android 14, and no more.

Other than this, I don’t think Motorola should have compromised in terms of the display either. I am not just saying an OLED panel would’ve fixed everything, but the G73 could’ve certainly used a better and brighter IPS screen. Still, budget phones compromise in one way or the other, so if you can overlook all this, I think it is currently one of the best options under Rs. 20,000.

Alongside the Vivo X Fold 2, the company is here with its first clamshell phone as well, the Vivo X Flip. Approaching a newer design on the rear side, the phone comes with a fully usable exterior display. Let’s get into the specs, features, and expected price of Vivo X Flip in Nepal.

Design and Display

As the name implies, the Vivo X Flip follows a clamshell form factor. It is 8.19mm thick when expanded and weighs 198 grams. The phone is available in three color options: Ling Purple, Silk Gold, and Diamond Black. For the main display, the Vivo X Flip sports a 6.74″ FHD+ LTPO OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate, similar to Oppo Find N2 Flip. As for audio, the company has fitted two 10W speakers that can decode Dolby Atmos audio here. In terms of UI, Skyworth has used Google TV here, which has been complemented by 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage.

Vivo has launched its flagship foldable, the X Fold 2. It’s the successor to last year’s X Fold, with some improvements. So let’s take a look at the specs, features, and expected price of the Vivo X Fold 2 in this article.

Vivo X Fold 2 Overview:

Design and Display

Going with the design, Vivo has used an aviation-grade self-developed FS54 material to make the X Fold 2 lightweight and durable. So, the foldable is just 13mm thick when folded and 6-6.7mm when unfolded while the weight is around 280g. The company claims 400,000 folding tests for the hinge which now comes with an upgraded water drop diameter of 5.0mm.

However, like the first-gen X Fold, there are no hints of ingress protection this time as well. The phone is available in three color options: China Red, Azure Blue, and String Shadow Black.

Alongside its new flagship foldable, Vivo also launched its new tablet in China, the Pad 2. It’s the flagship offering from the brand that succeeds the original Pad launched in April 2022. So let’s get into the specs, features, availability, and expected price of the Vivo Pad 2 in Nepal.

Vivo Pad 2 Overview:

Design and Display

Pad 2 borrow has a similar design language as the first-gen Pad. It comes with an aluminum unibody chassis with squared-off edges and is available in Blue, Pink, and Grey color options. That said, the company has made the tablet thinner at 6.5mm versus 8.5mm on its predecessor.

It also comes with a bigger screen this time around, measuring at 12.1-inches. It’s an IPS LCD panel that has a 2.8K resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. The display also supports HDR 10+ and has a display chip that helps protect your eyes from blue light.

But the highlight of the screen is its 7:5 aspect ratio, which is similar to the OnePlus Pad. Both brands claim that this aspect ratio offers a more natural experience when reading web pages and other content.

Additionally, Pad 2 features a self-developed simulation writing engine that provides users with real and tactile feedback; similar to what you would experience when writing with a pen or pencil on paper, says Vivo.

Performance

The tablet is powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 9000 chip, which replaces the Snapdragon 870 in the Vivo Pad. The chip should offer superior performance, particularly for demanding tasks such as gaming. The SoC is paired with up to 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 internal storage. The tablet runs on OriginOS 3, which is based on Android 13.
