Smartphones with the Best Battery Life in Nepal [Updated]

Battery life is one of the most important aspects of a smartphone. Since it is the powerhouse of a cell-phone, it is a vital part that keeps the phone running. And so, it is also one of the major things to consider while buying a smartphone. Even if a phone is capable of doing a lot of things, what good is it if it can’t last very long? So, if battery life influences your buying decision, just like mine, here are the Smartphones With Best Battery Life in various price segments.

Redmi 8, 8A

The Redmi 8 and Redmi 8A has its own share of differences. But when it comes to battery, both of them feature the same battery capacity of 5000mAh. Both of these devices also come with the same display size and the same processor, power consumption is also more or less the same. As far as the battery life is concerned the phone can normally back you up for two to three days based on your usage. If you are a multimedia fanatic, you are at luck. These devices can continuously play HD videos for over 15 hours.

Xiaomi Redmi 8 8A design and build

But when it comes to changes, they take slightly over 3 hours with the stock 10-watt charger. But since both of these devices support 18-watt fast charging, you can get a separate quick charger to accelerate the charging speed. Charging the device with an 18-watt charger takes around 2 hours to get the handset fully charged.

Samsung Galaxy M21

Launched in early 2020, the Galaxy M21 set the benchmark for budget phones, especially on the battery front. Because of its massive 6000mAh battery, the phone always remained on our list throughout the year. And the perk of having a big battery is a prolonged power backup. If you are a normal user, the phone can easily go for 1.5 to 2 days straight, based on your usage.

To recharge the battery, Samsung has also included a 15-watt Adaptive Fast Charger inside the box. And getting a fast charger inside the box really rare at this price point. So Samsung did a commendable job here. With the fast charger, you can refill the battery in slightly over 2 hours.

Vivo Y-series (Y11, Y12, Y15, Y17, Y19)

Vivo Y-series of smartphones honestly didn’t have good records in terms of specs. They used to have mediocre specs but often used to be overpriced. But it changed greatly this year. The company has been a little generous this year. The generosity was bestowed even on the cheapest Y-series smartphones of the year, the Vivo Y11 2019. And the generosity can primarily be seen especially on the battery front.

vivo y11 2019 mobile price in nepal

Most of the Vivo Y-series (Y11, Y12, Y15, Y17, Y19) features a 5000mAh battery. However, these phones also come with a 10-watt charger inside the box, which takes over 3 hours to get the battery fully replenished. However, unlike the Redmi 8, fast charging is not available here.

Realme 5-series

Because of its quad rear cameras, the Realme 5 series created quite a buzz in the smartphone industry. But that’s not the only good on this range of phones. It’s capacious 5000mAh battery also deserves some attention.

As far as the big batteries go, they provide prolonged endurance. And same is the case with the Realme 5/5i/5s. Because of the sizable battery, low-res display, and a power-efficient processor, the battery life is genuinely impressive. And software optimizations from Realme also have a great role to extend the battery life. The phone easily lasts for two days on normal use. Sometime, you will even have a spare charge to go for the third day. And that’s genuinely impressive.

Oppo A5 2020

Fancy design, quad rear cameras, stereo speakers, and a decent processor may be enough to please the mid-range crowd. But on top of all that niceties, Oppo A5 2020 comes with a big battery in its appealing body.

oppo a9 2020 display

Like most of the aforementioned phones out there, it also comes with a 5000mAh battery. So battery life is more or less the same. But due to software optimizations from Oppo, the battery life is slightly better than the competitors having similar specs.

Samsung Galaxy M31

If we have been listing smartphones with the best battery life acknowledging the size of the battery and its backup. In this case, the Galaxy M31 would undoubtedly on the topmost position. The phone comes with a massive 6000mAh battery, which makes it one of the most enduring smartphones of 2020.

samsung galaxy m31 design

As you can expect from a big battery, the battery life is absolutely fantastic. And as the phone comes with a power-efficient display and processor, it further helps to extend the battery backup. But sometimes Samsung’s UI turns aggressive and devours a significant amount of power. Nonetheless, it can easily back you up for at least two days. Charging the phone uses a 15-watt charger, which takes 158 minutes to go through 0 to 100%.

Samsung Galaxy A71

The Galaxy A71 is one of the most notable devices in the midrange segment. Since it’s targeted at multimedia enthusiasts, it created quite a buzz. In the case of Galaxy A71, 64MP quad rear camera also had a great role to steal the limelight. But apart from that, there is a big 4500mAh battery.

Samsung galaxy a71 design

With its humongous mattery, the screen on time extends to around 9.5 hours. On normal use, you can manage it for a day and a half. It also features a 25-Watt Adaptive Fast Charger, and it gets the job done in about an hour.

Redmi K20 Pro

The Redmi K20 Pro is a flagship killer. Not just on the performance front but on the battery side as well. It comes with a 4000mAh battery, which might sound modest as the Smartphone makers are including as high as 5000 and 6000mAh battery. But even with the 4000mAh battery, Redmi K20 Pro does an excellent job. A fully charged K20 Pro offers 13 hours of runtime while browsing the internet.

xiaomi redmi k20 pro rear panel

While playing videos continuously, the phone only dies after running for 20 hours. And if you are into voice calls, you can stay on the line continuously for 33 hours on the 3G network.

As far as charging is concerned, it takes 100 minutes while using the supplied 18-watt charger. The phone also supports 27-watt fast charging, which helps you refill the battery even fast.

Redmi Note 9 Pro

Next on the list, we have the Redmi Note 9 Pro. Launched as a successor to last year’s Note 8 Pro, it brings a few upgrades worth noting. And thankfully, one of them is the battery. You get a bigger 5020mAh cell which supports 30W fast charging. Moreover, you get the 30W fast charger inside the box as well. Even in normal usage, you’d imagine this phone will easily last you an entire day, and you’d be right.

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max Camera Setup

However, because it is powering a comparatively energy-efficient IPS LCD display with the standard 60Hz refresh rate. So, you’re bound to get even better battery compared to other phones with a higher refresh rate and a more vibrant display panel. Furthermore, you can also enhance battery life using MIUI 11’s extreme battery saver option. Having said that, Redmi Note 9 Pro’s display is nothing to just pass over, and it suits the price just fine.

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite

Another Xiaomi phone, and another recent release! The Mi Note 10 Lite was launched alongside the flagship Mi 10 5G in Nepal, just a couple of weeks ago. With an elegantly curved design and a vibrant AMOLED display, Mi Note 10 Lite has quite the demand for power. Though this one’s also a standard 60Hz display, it is powered by an energy-efficient Snapdragon 730G SoC, which is meant for gaming. So, even your longest gaming sessions will fare well with its huge 5260mAh battery.

Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Lite

In terms of charging, the phone supports 30W fast charging. Xiaomi promises up to 23 days of standby time, 14 hours of gaming, 23 hours of video playback, 6.8 hours of FHD video recording, 33 hours of 4G calling, etc. Though that may not and most likely will not translate to real-life performance, it gets pretty close. So, if you’re looking for a well-built device with good design, decent performance, and excellent battery life, Mi Note 10 Lite is one of the best smartphones available in Nepal for that matter.

Xiaomi Mi 10 5G

The launch of Xiaomi’s Mi 10 5G was a welcome one in Nepal, ending the company’s streak of budget and mid-range releases in the country. But it’s a special phone as well since it managed to grab multiple Nepal-first features like 108MP camera, Snapdragon 865, 5G connectivity, etc. Despite all these, Mi 10 has an excellent battery life as well. Featuring a big 4780mAh cell, this is easily an all-dayer device with some nice charging chops too.

Xiaomi Mi 10

Though Mi 10 features a 90Hz refresh rate and a big vibrant AMOLED panel, it will still manage to give out 6 hours or more of screen-on-time with medium to heavy usage. So, even if you play heavy games, or shoot 4K or 8K videos for hours, the Mi 10 will give you enough battery life for hours. In terms of charging, this phone is capable of 30W wired and wireless charging, though you’ll have to buy the wireless charger separately. Yet, the wired charger alone will suffice, taking your phone’s juice from nil to full in just a couple minutes over an hour.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+

The Galaxy Note 10+ is jam-packed with features. And with the S-pen on the board, you get an extra bit of features. So to help you do more with the device, Samsung has included a big 4300mAh battery on the phone.

The Note 10+ has the biggest battery in the history of Note series phones. Bag battery usually translates to better battery life and that’s true in the case of Note 10+ as well. The phone provides 32.5 hours of 3G talk time, 12 hours of web browsing, and almost 19 hours of video playback. Given the specs-heavy nature of the phone that’s absolutely commendable.

The phone impressed us even on the charging speed. Although it comes with a 25-watt charger, it charges the handset even faster than the OnePlus 7 Pro with 4000mAh battery and 30-watt fast charging. With a 25-watt charger, you can refill the battery in less than an hour. But Note 10+ also supports 45-watt charger, which you’ll have to buy separately if you are thinking to accelerate the charging speed. Furthermore, the phone has 18-watt wireless charging and reverse wireless charging options, which are the features to cherish.

iPhone 11 Pro Max

Apple has usually been parsimonious on the battery front. Lately, they have started showing some generosity. Last year’s iPhone XS Max had remarkable battery life. This year, Apple not just improved software optimizations to ensure efficient operation but also increased the battery capacity. The iPhone 11 Pro Max comes with a 25% bigger battery (3969mAh battery) than the XS Max promising even better battery life.

iphone 11 pro max space grey price nepal 2020 latest

The phone can run up to 21 hours if you engage yourself in video calling in a 3G network. Similarly, the phone will last you for 15 hours if you continuously browse the internet. If you are a multimedia enthusiast and spend time watching videos then you can do so continuously for 19 hours. For charging, you have two options: 18-watt wired charging and 10-watt wireless charging. None of them are actually fast when compared to competitors. The 18-watt charger refuels the battery in two hours.

Boston Dynamics launches Spot robot commercially in the US

After almost a year of real-world testing, Boston Dynamics has announced that its four-legged robot, Spot, is now ready for a commercial launch. This dog-like robot is now available for purchase to US companies. Read along to know more about the Spot robot from Boston Dynamics.

Boston Dynamics Spot: The Robot

The creator, Boston Dynamics, is advertising Spot as a multi-purpose mobility platform. It is programmable and has been programmed to suit the need of different tasks. The Spot is specifically targeted for industrial and commercial workplaces.

Spot robot design

It also looks like something out of a science fiction movie. You can describe it as a robotic dog. Like its biological counterpart, Boston Dynamics claims that it can follow you anywhere you go. It can even climb stairs and traverse rough terrain. On the back of the robot, there is enough space for you to fit in up to four different modules.

The company calls these modules “Add-ons” and they have to be purchased separately. Industries can buy these for specific tasks that they want Spot to accomplish. It supports the remote operation and is capable of autonomous sensing as well. Spot also has its own camera that can take around 5,000 photos every week.

Controller

There are two different ways to control the robot. The default choice would be to use the Spot Tab Controller that comes with the device. Boston Dynamics claims that the controller is user-friendly and easy to get started. You can use it to control the robot’s capabilities such as body posing, walking traits, obstacle avoidance, local navigation, and calibration. It can also be used to automate basic tasks via the Autowalk feature.

Spot robot with add ons

API and SDK

Another way to control the Spot via the API. The company also offers a Software Development Kit to its customers. Developers can use the SDK to create new features and deploy new applications or systems.

Security

As per the creators, Spot is secure for use since third-party security experts audit it. All the data being logged into and communicated between robot and user are encrypted. Boston Dynamics also clarifies that it won’t receive any data from the robot without the user’s consent.

Application

The primary use case of the Spot is on worksites. Spot can go anywhere a human can go and users can control it remotely. So, it can substitute human in areas of work which aren’t entirely safe. But the application doesn’t end here. It is also capable of autonomous data collection and transporting loads.

Spot in industrial setting

Last year, the company leased out the robot to a number of industries and business firms for real-world testing and for feedbacks. As of now, the robot has already been deployed for 3D mapping, inspection and fault detection, and data collection. In Singapore, Spot warned people of social-distancing in one of the parks. It has also aided in coronavirus treatment at one of the hospitals in Boston.

Safety Concerns

Boston Dynamics has its roots in the military so people haven’t ruled out the possibility of using the Spot as a weapon. However, the company has assured that users have to ensure that it won’t be used or harming or intimidating people. If users violate the condition, their license will be invalidated.

Spot 2.0

At present, engineers are working from their home on what the company calls Spot 2.0. It’s basically a package of future updates that will add more features to the Spot. One such feature is the teleoperation which the company is using it now. This allows potential users to demo the Spot robot from home during the lockdown period.

Boston Dynamics Spot Robot Price & Availability

Boston Dynamics’ Spot is now exclusively available for industries and business firms in the US where its price is $74,500. An eligible customer can only order a maximum of two Spot robots, with 6 to 8 days for shipment. As of now, the company isn’t entertaining overseas orders.

Qualcomm announced Snapdragon 865 back in December last year, which paved the way for OEMs to incorporate 5G technology into their upcoming smartphone. But soon, there emerged a problem. This new 5G chipset turned out to be way too expensive even for a flagship chipset. To improve the situation Qualcomm has now announced Snapdragon 690, which is believed to bring the 5G in smartphones under $300. Let’s take a look at what Qualcomm is offering in the Snapdragon 690.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 Overview

Snapdragon 690 is the first chipset in the 6-series to feature an integrated 5G modem. Up until now, 5G connectivity was reserved for more expensive 7-series and the flagship 8-series. But it isn’t the only upgrade that Qualcomm has brought.

Architecture

Talking about the architecture, the new octa-core chipset is based on the 8nm LPP process which is an improvement over Snapdragon 675 that was based on the 11nm process. However, SD 690’s closest competitor, the Dimensity 820, is based on a more efficient 7nm process.

Qualcomm has stuck to a big.LITTLE configuration with two power cores and six efficient cores. For the former, the company has gone with the latest Kryo 560 (which are the stock Arm Cortex-A77 cores) clocked at 2.0GHz. Similarly, six Arm Cortex-A55 cores (@1.7GHz) are being used as efficient cores. Qualcomm is claiming there is a 20% improvement in performance compared to the Snapdragon 675.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G logo

The Cortex-A77 cores do have better Instruction Per Cycle (IPC) the Cortex-A76 cores. However, Snapdragon 690 won’t be making best out the specs because of the lower frequency. We don’t expect it to outperform the SD 720G even though the latter has Cortex-A76 cores (@ 2.3GHz). Adding further insult to the injury is the fact that the Dimensity 820 packs not two, but four performance Cortex-A76 cores clocked at even higher 2.6GHz frequency.

GPU

For the GPU, Qualcomm has used the new Adreno 619L which is claimed to come with a 60% performance boost over Adreno 612. If you were expecting the Snapdragon Elite Gaming technology to make an entrance as well, it won’t be available in the 690. It is only for G-series and 8-series chipsets. However, SD 690 does support Vulkan 1.1 API and Physically Based Rendering (PBR).

5G Modem

Like mentioned earlier, it is the first 6-series chipset to support 5G connectivity. It has been made possible because of the X51 modem that’s integrated on to the chip. Unfortunately, it misses out on mmWave 5G support. The Snapdragon 690 supports sub-6Hz for both SA and NSA band. The maximum downstream and upstream speed has been quoted at 2500Mbps and 1200Mbps, respectively.

Camera

The new Spectra 355L ISP (Image Signal Processor) can support up to 192MP cameras or 48MP capture with MFNR (Multi-Frame Noise Reduction) enabled. In a multi-camera setup, it can support up to 32MP + 16MP dual cameras. It is also capable of 4K UHD video capture.

Others

In terms of display, Snapdragon 690 supports 120Hz display in FHD+ resolution or 60Hz in QHD+. It features 10bit color depth and support for HDR10 and HDR10+. The chipset is also Wi-Fi 6 ready and packs in the new 5th-gen AI Engine, which is reportedly 70% faster than its predecessor. It also has support for dual-channel LPDDR4x at up to 1866MHz.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 Availability

We can expect 5G smartphones with Snapdragon 690 processor to be available in the market starting from Q2 2020. As of now, Nokia, LG, Motorola, Sharp, and TCL are all working on phones with the Snapdragon 690. These upcoming smartphone will retail for about $300 or even less.

Users can now make payments through WhatsApp

Facebook is hell-bent on integrating everything into its ecosystem. And in a bid to bring more e-commerce to its system, Facebook has now launched WhatsApp Pay. Basically, it means that the users will be using Facebook Pay to send and receive money via WhatsApp. However, the service is currently limited to Brazil only.

For normal consumers, this service is free to use. That means that they will not have to pay any commission fee to Facebook. However, business organizations, that will use the app for commerce will have to pay a 3.99% processing fee.

How it works

Users can use this service to purchase products from WhatsApp’s catalog. Or exchange of money among friends and family. However, to use this service, customers should first link their WhatsApp to their credit/debit card. Currently, Facebook has partnered with just three banks: Banco do Brasil, Nubank and Sicredi. Furthermore, they have also partnered up with Cielo, a payment processor. However, in the future, they will obviously partner up with more banks.

Anyway, so after linking up your card, users will have to enter a six-digit PIN or fingerprint to complete the transaction. This is there for security purposes. That is it will help prevent any unauthorized transactions.

This move from Facebook in my opinion is a masterstroke. I mean there are other options for digital payments. For instance, people widely use PayPal, Google Play, Paytm and so on to make payments. However, there are virtually no competitors that offer payment options in the messaging app. Now, the informal use of WhatsApp for a commercial purpose is prevalent. Businesses use it to exchange messages with customers, suppliers, and so forth. Furthermore, the app already has amassed over 2 billion users. Thus, the integration of Facebook Pay within WhatsApp is clearly a good move. Eventually, Facebook plans on allowing its users to use linked cards across its family of apps.

Covid 19: Inexpensive dexamethasone becomes first life-saving drug

The spread of COVID-19 across the world has caused a lot of casualties. At the time of the writing, over 440K people have lost their lives to this pandemic. The virus is contagious and is showing no sign of going away anytime soon. However, researchers around the globe are hell-bent on finding a cure to it. In the hope of finding a cure, multiple drugs are being tested. And now we might just have got a major breakthrough in it. Researchers at Oxford University claim that dexamethasone can be used to lower the mortality rate in high-risk patients.

Cheap steroid dexamethasone for Covid-19 Patients

The team of researchers led b Prof. Peter Horby, administered drugs to patients in about 2000 hospitals in the UK. The result was then compared against 4000 hospitals who were not given the drug. Per them, the risk of death reduced from 40% to 28% for patients on a ventilator. Similarly, the risk was cut from 25% to 20% for those in need of oxygen. This clearly shows the reduction in the mortality rate of COVID-19 patients after the use of dexamethasone.

19 out of 20 COVID-19 patients recover without having to be admitted. And even if people need to get admitted, after some time they successfully recover. However, out of all these, there will be such patients who will require oxygen or mechanical ventilation. These are high-risk patients. And dexamethasone works best on them. The drug apparently helps to stop the damage caused as a result of the immune system going into overdrive.

How effective is this drug?

This research shows that dexamethasone saves the life of one out of every eight patients on a ventilator. And one out of every 20-25 patients treated with oxygen. Moreover, this low-dose steroid costs around £5 and needs to be administered for 10 days.

Dexamethasone is available globally and has been in existence since the early 60s. It is used to treat conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. This drug is an already proven medicine to treat people with a breathing condition. Thus, by giving the drug intravenously, the mortality rate of COVID-19 patients can be reduced. Furthermore, as the drug is available globally at a relatively cheap price, even poorer countries can reap its benefits. This drug, however, does not help patients with milder symptoms.

Now, the world has two proper options to treat COVID-19 patients. Dexamethasone for high-risk patients. And remdesivir to reduce the duration of symptoms. Let’s hope that the world recovers faster now.

Hey Ncell, stop automatically activating & renewing services!

0

There’s a popular Nepali proverb that goes “हावा नचलि पात हल्लिदैन”. It roughly translates to how nothing happens without a reason. And that’s right, right? I mean, people don’t protest just because, Thanos didn’t snap half the existence void of a rationale, and Ncell doesn’t get its bad rep without a reason either. Even if I don’t (& can’t) repeat the obscenities the company is referred to in verbatim, you probably know Ncell by a lot of other nicknames. Here, I’ll be discussing how Ncell exploits its userbase through automatic activation and renewal of different services.

And if you don’t… hey, good for you! From tax-duping to shamelessly exploiting the helpless and at most times unsuspecting customers by activating & renewing services seemingly at random, Nepal’s second-largest telecom provider has gained quite the name for itself. Though the chapter of “Ncell stalling the government with paying its due tax” has recently been closed, the latter still remains a dreadful problem to this day.

Ncell Automatic Activation & Renewal of Services

If you’re a Ncell subscriber, chances are you’ve noticed how your balance gets inexplicably reduced. Like, you can almost guarantee it’s not supposed to be this low but somehow it is. Yet, if you haven’t been a victim of such an incident, once again, good for you! Since I’m betting the vast majority of us don’t keep tabs on their mobile balances unlike other expenses, you thus find it difficult to validate the evident abnormality on your mobile subscription. What do you do next?

Ncell Services & Devices

A dedicated person would contact the Ncell customer care number and try to sort things out. Turns out, you were subscribed to some weird, unheard of service that you’ve never used and had no memory of activating. Well… guess why you don’t remember it? That’s because our very own friendly neighborhood Ncell does it for you without any prior confirmation from the customer’s end.

And if that’s not taking good care of your clientele, I don’t know what is.

The company is so driven towards simplifying your everyday life, that it would go out of its way to provide facilities that you weren’t even aware you wanted – without your awareness. Wow, now that’s some level of commitment I cannot fathom. So, I did the unthinkable.

Going through Ncell’s Terms & Conditions

Yes, ladies and gentlemen: I read Ncell’s terms and conditions (T&C). But that was silly of me ‘cause obviously, they won’t indicate or even slightly imply that the company reserves the right to straight-up scam their subscribers out of money.

All their fancy legal resources have made sure of that. Now, I’m no lawyer or anything so I couldn’t figure out any loopholes in the T&C which would allow Ncell to initiate services, short of the customer’s agreement. However, I’m confident that all this shady practice is somehow in an intricately complicated way, legal.

Ncell Terms & Conditions

Also, while every other fillable or informative section of the subscription form has both Nepali and English translation, the T&C is written entirely in the Nepali language. Combine the fact that almost no one reads it and that its strictly professional composition is honestly hard to get for the majority of its audience, you get a bigger net to trap the helpless. Some would argue that the customer’s inability to understand it is entirely their fault; and they’d be right. However, it could also easily be a technique called “technostrategic discourse”, which is a way to discourage debates through the use of specialized language unfamiliar to the non-professionals.

More importantly, what’s the point of reading the T&C if you can’t negotiate the terms, but need the service anyway?

Push Marketing at its worst!

Moving on, Ncell has a lot of services under its belt and frankly, some of them are pretty darn useful or plain fun to have. For instance, “Ncell Saapati”, “Balance Transfer”, “PRBT”, etc. are the most useful of the bunch, and also probably the most subscribed-to services. But a large number of them are quite expensively redundant – and these are exactly the kinds of facilities Ncell seems to force upon its customers under the company’s inexcusably aggressive push marketing campaign.

Allow me to list out some of the said subscription-based services I’ve personally witnessed my family, friends, neighbors, colleagues, or some strangers on the internet have been a victim of.

  • Video Plus Service: for videos related to topics like Bollywood, fashion, fitness, kids, and lifestyle
  • Vzone: for exclusive, original and premium short-form video content from other media
  • Games Club: for playing and downloading games, including live games
  • App Gallery: for playing and downloading games under Huawei’s App Gallery
  • Shemaroo: for streaming and downloading Bollywood gossip video content

Yeah, none of them sound appealing at all, do they? Regardless, from what I’ve seen, many such victims were subscribed to the App Gallery. This service was formerly known as Huawei AppGallery but has since undergone a name change. In case you don’t know, AppGallery is Huawei’s answer to Google Play Store for app distribution since it was barred from using any technology from US-owned companies – including Google. You can learn more about the whole ordeal by clicking here.

Checking out the quality of such services

I checked out a few of them, and boy are they terrible! Both Games Club and App Gallery are similar; with a working principle of “Netflix for mobile games”. There are some games you can download for free, while some cost up to Rs. 200! On top of this, some of the games here are a rip-off of the ones available for free on Play Store. Wow! If this is some way to promote Huawei AppGallery, it’s terrible. I can’t help but think this dubious inefficacy is what lead to changing the name of the service in the first place.

Ncell AppGalllery

But let me reiterate, the problem here isn’t that the service itself is terrible with an unrewarding and disappointing selection of features available in them. Rather, it is still the automatic activation and renewal of services from Ncell, without the customer’s knowledge.

Personal Experience & Ncell’s Validation

Unfortunately, my mother was also one of the people victimized by such a scheme. She uses an old-school Symbian phone (Samsung GT-S5233S) and doesn’t even know how to use it properly. All she does is pick up or make calls through the speed dial. One day, she complained about how the automatic voice operator replied with a balance-low message; when I had just topped-up the balance a couple of days back. It was weird and I called the customer care number “9005”. Disappointingly, I was informed that she was subscribed to Huawei AppGallery VIP service. Huh?

I complained that it’s not possible and the operator argued that she could’ve “accidentally” activated it from those pop-up messages you get when you hang up on calls or make a balance inquiry. Then I asked for ways to deactivate the service and that’s the end of it. However, I’ve been monitoring the phone every now and then to check if the message pops-up again. But it has been a no-show. Additionally, there was no message regarding the activation of the service either. You can easily make of that what you will.

The Way Out!

In some cases, Ncell has justified the service-activation saying the user may have clicked an ad for it on the web. I mean, should it be that simple to trigger a monetary transaction? Shouldn’t there be a few more steps, like confirmation and validation? What’s even more infuriating is that in many users’ cases, the service de-activation doesn’t even work easily. Take these samples for instance.

Ncell automatic activation and renewal services examples

The subscriber is following the guideline specified by Ncell to de-activate them, but it doesn’t work. Seems like an angry verbal complaint is the only way to be rid of this mischievous act. And there are 3 categories of people who handle this situation:

  • Someone who actively works to sort out the problem
  • Someone who doesn’t care
  • And someone like an elderly, who isn’t even aware of the looting

Final Words

Let’s wrap things up now. What Ncell is doing is straight-up unethical and though I don’t have any legal expertise, this thing certainly feels illegal. Profiting off of helpless customers by charging them for services through automatic activation and renewal shouldn’t be a thing, Ncell. Sadly, this has been going on for a long time; which also goes to reflect the state of consumer rights protection in Nepal. As a result, Ncell can’t even substantiate it as a programming error in the system.

As an individual subscriber to the company, all we can do is resolve it on our end and go separate ways. However, our collective efforts can definitely put pressure on this multi-billion-dollar corporation to make a substantial effort; making sure that this kind of illegitimate corporate swindling doesn’t happen again.

Hear me Cheer: the app that will bring back stadium noise to your favorite sport

The world is slowly starting to somewhat recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. Granted, we will not go back to being normal right from tomorrow, but things are improving. However, the post-pandemic world will not be like the “normal” world that we are used to. Everything will be affected. Be it travel, parties, or sports, nothing will remain the same. Well, travel and parties are a few things that are unlikely to resume anytime soon. However, sports in some parts of the world are slowly returning. EPL, NFL, and many more have already laid out their plans to resume their respective competition soon. Still, they will be missing one integral part of any sports i.e the fans. Empty stadiums are no fun, but that’s where the Hear me Cheer app jumps in.

Due to the current social distancing policy, stadiums will not be completely filled. And with no fans inside the stadium, even those watching from their homes might feel less interested as they will not hear any cheering. Now, that’s a major problem as fan noise is an important part of the sport-watching experience. However, Champ Traxs’ innovation, the Hear me Cheer app founder aims to revive that experience.

Hear me Cheer app

Hear me Cheer is a web app that compiles the audio streams of fans cheering and booing remotely. And after the compilation, it plays the sound both inside the stadium and over the television broadcast.

Basically, as you sit down on your couch to watch your favorite sport, all you have to do is go to their site and put down your device. The app automatically records each user’s background sound. And compiles it into one audio stream that contains every user’s sound. So as you cheer for your favorite team, the app sends the audio data to its server for compilation. It uses a proprietary algorithm in order to weigh each user’s sound. The low-latency algorithm enables the app to maintain full integrity and sound effects.

The Hear me Cheer app actually debuted during a boxing match on ESPN last Tuesday. And it also played the audio during the NFL draft in April. However, when the football season in the US resumes, that’s when the app will be truly tested.

Should football leagues in Europe also make use of this app? What do you think? Do comment down below!
