Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 announced with major performance boosts!

Qualcomm launched its top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip just a few weeks back. The company has now announced a new member to its “Snapdragon 7” series of midrange mobile chipset as well, called the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 Overview:

The Snapdragon 7 series has become convoluted with some recent launches like the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 and Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2. Although it sounds like the 7 Gen 3 is the successor to both of them, it’s the true successor to the very first Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 instead. And it actually sits between the 7s Gen 2 and 7+ Gen 2. I told you things were convoluted here!

Internals

Anyway, Qualcomm’s latest midrange chip has been fabbed under TSMC’s 4nm process. Its octa-core CPU cluster consists of one primary core clocked at up to 2.63 GHz. Similarly, Qualcomm has coupled it with three performance and four efficiency cores, with a maximum clock speed of 2.40 GHz and 1.80 GHz, respectively. Qualcomm says all this results in a 15% better CPU performance and 20% better power efficiency versus Snapdragon 7 Gen 1.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 Highlights

Likewise, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 features an unnamed Qualcomm Adreno GPU that’s 1.5x more powerful compared to the 7 Gen 1. In addition, the latest chipset also features a Qualcomm Hexagon NPU that apparently offers 60% faster AI performance per watt.

Hardware support and more

Moving on, this third-gen “Snapdragon 7” series processor can support up to 16GB LPDDR5 RAM. Meanwhile, it supports UFS 3.1 storage as well as Qualcomm Quick Charge 5 technology via USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C connection. In terms of cameras, a Snapdragon 7 Gen 3-powered phone can handle up to 200MP photo capture and even record 4K HDR videos at up to 60 fps.

Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 for mobile

Additionally, it supports a WFHD+ on-device display with a 168Hz refresh rate, or WQHD+ @120Hz. While supporting up to a 4K 60Hz external display. In terms of wireless connectivity, this chipset supports WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and six-way navigation with GPS, GLONASS, BeiDou, Galileo, QZSS, and NavIC.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 Availability

According to Qualcomm, Honor and Vivo will be the first adopters of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chip. Furthermore, devices featuring this processor are expected to make their way later this month.

ColorOS 14 (Android 14) Beta Update Roadmap is here for OPPO smartphones!

0

The Android 14 update, initially introduced on Pixel phones, is gradually making its way through. Oppo, the Chinese tech giant has also disclosed the Android 14 roadmap with ColorOS 14. Here’s a brief overview of the updated roadmap and key features of ColorOS 14 for Oppo smartphones.

Oppo ColorOS 14 Update Roadmap:

The ColorOS 14 update has already started. The first one to get a stable version of this OS will be Oppo Find N2 Flip in mid-November. Others will first get the beta update, and based on the feedback, Oppo will fine-tune the stable release of the OS for that device.

Beta Update Rollout timeline

The ColorOS 14 beta update timing may vary depending on the region you live in. But here is the general schedule:

October 2023

November 2023

December 2023

  • K series: Oppo K10 5G
  • A-series: Oppo A77 5G

January 2024

April 2024

  • Reno series: Oppo Reno8 Z 5G
  • F-series: Oppo F21s Pro 5G
  • A-series: Oppo A95 5G

One flaw I found here is that the Oppo F21s Pro 5G has been mentioned twice. Hence, one of them might be the F21 Pro 5G.

What’s new in Oppo ColorOS 14?

There are many tweaks and turns in this update. But I will focus on the important ones quickly.

Design

Remember the Aquamorphic design from the last version? It is getting an upgrade in ColorOS 14. Specifically, the feature will have new sound effects, color systems, and interactions based on the smartphone’s status, time, and on-screen content. Plus, the new Aqua Dynamics design integrates bubbles, capsules, and panels expandable from the status bar for enhanced interaction.

Oppo ColorOS 14 Aqua Dynamics design

Plus, ColorOS 14 brings in GO Green Always-On-Display, displaying environment-based animations linked to your step count. The animations signify reduced carbon emissions through walking instead of alternative transportation. Users can also open Snapchat easily with a lock-screen shortcut. Additionally, “Snapchat Card on Shelf” provides a quick view of messages, status, and friend locations.

AI-powered features

The AI-based Smart Touch enables users to collect texts, images, and videos from all apps into the new File Dock (situated at the Smart Sidebar). The stored contents can then be dragged and used across other apps. The added benefit is that this “clipboard-like thing” is synced across Oppo devices.

Oppo ColorOS 14 AI-powered features

Another feature that uses AI is “Smart Image Matting,” which crops out multiple subjects from an image or a frame of the video. Users can edit the cutouts as well as share them with friends. And the new “Smart Charging” adjusts the charging current based on the smartphone’s usage, minimizing battery wear and tear.

Trinity Engine

ColorOS 14 promises smoother performance across Oppo devices, thanks to virtualization in their Trinity Engine. ROM virtualization compresses apps and files to save up to 20GB of data. While the RAM virtualization keeps more memory for background apps. And lastly, CPU virtualization strikes a balance between efficiency and performance using better scheduling of tasks.

Privacy

Aside from that, ColorOS 14 also focuses on privacy. It introduces Picture Keeper, retaining Android 14’s ability to prevent apps from getting your whole gallery. Instead, the app will need permission for selected images from the user every time for added security.

Nepal government has decided to ban TikTok. What’s next?

    1

Nepal government has officially banned the popular video-sharing app TikTok in the country. As of 13th November 2023, anyone living in Nepal cannot access the web version of TikTok, while ISPs will soon disable its app version within 24 hours.

Why did the Nepal government ban TikTok?

Chinese company TikTok has been banned in many countries because of potential privacy and cybersecurity concerns over fears that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) can use the social media app for spying or propaganda.

However, Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of Nepal Narayan Kaji Shrestha emphasized that the government’s decision to prohibit TikTok in Nepal is rooted in concerns about its role in disturbing social cohesion, undermining national unity, and endorsing inappropriate content.

Many countries like the US, UK, Canada, and EU have only banned TikTok from devices issued to government staff citing data security concerns. Whereas countries like India, Pakistan, Taiwan, and now Nepal have imposed a public sector ban. Meaning all citizens are forbidden to use this Chinese-made software on their smartphones, tablets, and PCs. By the way, the Nepal government had already banned TikTok from historic, sacred sites across the country around a year ago.

The pros and cons of TikTok ban in Nepal

Now, has the Nepal government done the right thing by banning TikTok in Nepal? Let’s explore its cons first!

    The cons

The first demographic that’s immediately affected by the TikTok ban in Nepal is the small content creators — typically aged between 18 to 24 — who were generating some sort of income through creative content. Likewise, TikTok has been one of the best platforms for small businesses to sell their products through short interactive videos.

Tiktok launching AI Avatars is worrisome

While it’s not as if TikTok is without competition, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels are nowhere near as engaging and algorithm-friendly. So new creators or any genre of videos may struggle to rapidly reach a broader audience, hindering potential engagement rates.

    The pros

What about the pros then? Well, since TikTok is a relatively new video-sharing platform, it is not as refined as YouTube when it comes to copyright strikes or guidelines related to hate speech and harassment, pornographic content, and those that promote violence. According to a report, a total of 1,647 cybercrime cases were reported on TikTok in the last four years in Nepal.

Such types of content are especially more difficult to regulate in “TikTok LIVE” where creators engage with their audience in real-time. In Nepal, several instances have been reported where videos were removed due to violations of TikTok’s guidelines. While the company says it’s working hard on these issues, it has severely impacted teens and young adults.

How to use TikTok in Nepal after the ban?

But as they say, where there’s a will, there’s a way.

And despite the ban, you can still use TikTok in Nepal by using a VPN software. What VPN does is, it establishes a digital connection between your computer and a remote server owned by a VPN provider. This creates a virtual network that encrypts your personal data, masks your IP address, and lets you browse from a different region.

    VPN usage illustration

So you can download VPN apps like Nord VPN and TunnelBear to still access TikTok in Nepal. After installing a VPN service provider, you can sign up for free and locate the address to countries where TikTok is legal and continue using it. However, most VPN apps offer limited data and bandwidth. So you might have to upgrade to a premium subscription which can cost anywhere between $5 – $15 per month.

    My final thoughts

Like TikTok, PUBG faced a similar ban in Nepal. But it was swiftly turned away through a Supreme Court stay order last time. And the current TikTok ban situation with an even weaker case remains to be seen about how sustainable this restriction will be in the long run.

While I personally don’t use TikTok that often, I appreciate its appeal to those who enjoy the platform. It’s fun and highly interactive. The sophistication of its algorithm, intuitively showcasing content aligned with individual preferences, adds to its “wow” factor.

Samsung Galaxy M44 launched with Snapdragon 888 5G chipset

South Korean tech giant Samsung has just launched the Galaxy M44 smartphone in its home country be it under a different name. The “Galaxy Jump 3” which will likely be called the ‘Galaxy M44’ globally houses the powerful Snapdragon 888 chipset among other things. In this article, let’s talk about the Samsung Galaxy M44 including its design, full specs, and expected price in Nepal.

    Samsung Galaxy M44 Overview:

    Performance

Under the hood, the Galaxy M44 has a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SOC.

It is an octa-core processor announced on December 1, 2020. Fabbed under the 5nm process, this SoC has a prime Cortex-X1 core clocked at 2.8 GHz, 3 performance Cortex-A78 cores at 2.4 GHz, and 4 efficiency Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz. Alongside the CPU cores, the chip features an Adreno 660 GPU and an X60 5G modem baseband.

    Snapdragon 888 5G SoC

So, although 3 years old at this point, the 888 chipset is a beast at this price range and should be able to outperform its competitors like Snapdragon 778G,  Snapdragon 870 and Dimensity 1300.

Complementing the processor, you get 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage with support for further expansion via a MicroSD card.

    Design and Display

The design of the Samsung Galaxy M44 is nothing out of the ordinary. It has a water-drop notch with noticeable bezels up front and features a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

    Samsung Galaxy M44 Design

As for the display, it is a 120 Hz IPS LCD panel which is unfortunately a downgrade from last year’s AMOLED one. The FHD+ panel (1080 x 2408) is the same size at 6.5 inches and has an 8-bit color depth.

    Cameras

    Samsung Galaxy M44 - Cameras

Moving on to the cameras, you get a triple shooter setup consisting of 50MP primary and 2MP depth and macro lenses. Unfortunately, the cameras also see a downgrade as there is no ultrawide camera, and there’s no OIS either. On the front, you see a 13MP selfie cam with an aperture of f /2.0.

    Battery and More

Fueling the Jump 3 (hopefully M44) smartphone is a 5000 mAh battery which is slightly smaller than the 6000 mAh cell on the M34. The charging speed stays the same at a modest 25W. And like with their other midrange options, Samsung promises 3 years of OS updates and 4 years of security patches.

    Samsung Galaxy M44 Specifications:

    • Display: 6.5″ FHD+ 8-bit 120Hz PLS display
    • Chipset: Snapdragon 888 (5nm)

In this article, let’s dive in to discuss the newly launched Huawei BE3 Pro WiFi 7 router including its features, bandwidth, expected price in Nepal, and more.

    Huwaei BE3 Pro: Rumors Roundup

    Features

The Huawei BE3 Pro measures 225 x 177.9 x 59.5mm with four antennas neatly folded. Its slim rectangular design adds a touch of modernity to any space. Adding an LED light enhances visibility and adds a subtle aesthetic flair.

Under the hood, the Huawei BE3 Pro uses 4K QAM modulation for efficient data transmission. In addition, the Quad-core WiFi-7 achieves speeds up to 3600 Mbps for smooth downloads and seamless gaming. With dual-frequency bands operating at 2.4GHz and 5GHz, users can expect enhanced network speed and reduced latency.

    What’s more?

The signal strength and coverage of Huawei BE3 Pro are bolstered by four performance signal amplifiers, allowing the router to easily penetrate walls for a more expansive network reach. The inclusion of a dedicated e-sports gigabit network port prioritizes gaming data transmission, ensuring fast and stable performance. For broader connectivity options, there is also a 2500 Mbit high-speed network port.

    Huawei BE3 Pro

Additionally, The router BE3 Pro features Huawei’s proprietary game turbo engine, which intelligently identifies popular games for optimal streaming speed. Parents can manage their children’s internet activities through the Huawei Smart Life app, which provides a simple and accessible way to monitor online usage.

    Huawei BE3 PRO: WiFi 7

WiFi 7, or IEEE 802.11be Extremely High Throughput (EHT), is the new WiFi standard, which is also exclusively now used in Huawei BE3 Pro. It operates on all three bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz) to make the most of available spectrum resources. Unlike WiFi 6, which aims to handle more devices, WiFi 7 focuses on providing impressive speeds for every device more efficiently. If you face issues like buffering, lag, or congestion, upgrading to a WiFi 7 router could be your ideal solution.

How is it better than WiFi 6?

WiFi 7, also available in the Huawei BE3 Pro will be way faster than Wi-Fi 6. Wi-Fi 7’s top speed is 46 Gbps for one device, much faster than Wi-Fi 6’s 9.6 Gbps. This means quicker downloads and smoother streaming for everyone.

Another cool thing is Wi-Fi 7’s bigger channel width. It goes from 160 MHz in Wi-Fi 6 to 320 MHz in Wi-Fi 7. This helps send data better, reducing traffic jams and making the network handle more stuff at once. Also, Wi-Fi 7 uses a smart encoding trick called 4k QAM (4096 Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) to put even more data in the airwaves.

In addition, it uses Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), a modulation technique, that empowers higher data rates and more efficient utilization of the available spectrum. It enables multiple devices to transmit data on the same channel, thereby enhancing the overall network throughput. So, with faster speeds and smarter tech, Wi-Fi 7 is a big step up from Wi-Fi 6.
