Great news: Nepal now has PUBG servers of its own!

Recently, the craze towards e-sports in Nepal has been on a steep rise, thanks to the recent triumphs of domestic teams in international competitions. If you belong to this crowd, there is a piece of good news for you. Worldlink, the biggest ISP in the country has brought the PUBG server to Nepal in collaboration with Tencent. Worldlink has stated that the servers are still in the beta stage and will help reduce latency in the game (ping) once they go live.

What are CDN servers, and what do they do?

Content Delivery Network or CDNs are the backbones of almost all major web applications. As their name suggests, they help in the effective delivery of content. When are using any web page, you are constantly sending requests to the corresponding server, which processes your requests and provides you with relevant information. This whole process takes time which is called latency or ping.

Usually, each application has one origin server in one part of the world. If a user sends requests from other parts of the world, he/she may experience high latency. To help avoid that web application uses CDNs.

CDNS have multiple points of presence or PoPs, which consists of cache servers. These servers store cached versions of websites in SSD, HDDs, and even RAM to cope with local requests.

Usually, these types of servers have static content such as text, images, and other resources. However, recent advancements in the field have made dynamic servers possible. These servers are capable of handling requests unique to requestors.

In addition to content delivery, CDNs are also key in the security of web applications. Most CDNs use a reverse proxy technology that helps mask users’ IP. CDNS are the perfect place for installing firewalls and are great in mitigating DDoS attacks.

PUBG, Worldlink, and CDN servers in Nepal

As of now, Worldlink has partnered with Tencent and PUBG to bring two CDN servers to Nepal. The two servers have already passed the initial tests. Now, Worldlink is preparing to add 8 more CDN servers in Nepal soon.

Exynos 2100 - PUBG Mobile

We are not sure if the CDNs in question are static or dynamic. We tried to reach out to Worldlink and were told that these servers would help load maps and the gaming environment faster. The team believes that it will help reduce latency or ping in while gaming.

According to the reports, Nepal uses 20 to 25 Gbps of international bandwidth for PUBG. Worldlink alone is responsible for around 10Gbps of this bandwidth. Before this, Worldlink had successfully installed 20 CDN servers for TikTok after users complained of high latency.

User expectations

Local players had been demanding a dedicated PUBG server for Nepal for some time now. They believe the new servers will uplift the gaming experience by reducing the latency by processing their inputs locally. However, it is yet to be seen if these servers will bring significant improvement in gameplay.

After the launch of Gionee M100 last year, the company has launched yet another smartphone in Nepal. This time, it’s the Gionee M12. Here, we will be discussing the full specifications and key features of the Gionee M12, along with its official price in Nepal.

The phone is built around a 6.55-inch panel with an HD+ resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels. It has a left-aligned punch-hole cutout that contributes to the 91% screen-to-body ratio. Gionee M12 comes in a 3D curved body. Users can choose between two color options – Black and Green.

The variant of the Gionee M12 that has arrived in Nepal is powered by Helio P22. There is also a Helio A25-powered option but that is yet not available in Nepal. Here, seeing P22 in action is quite disappointing as you can easily get the other phones with the newer and more powerful Helio G-series chipsets in the same price segment.

As for the memory, the M12 comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The latter can is expandable up to 256GB using an external MicroSD card.

MediaTek announces Helio G96 and G88 chipsets with minimal upgrades

Since its inception in 2019, MediaTek’s Helio G series chipsets have been a popular choice in budget and lower-midrange smartphones. Yesterday, MediaTek announced two new silicons in this lineup—Helio G96 and Helio G88.

MediaTek Helio G96 Overview:

Here, the Helio G96 builds on the specs of last year’s Helio G95. It has the same core configuration with 2x Cortex-A76 and 6x Cortex-A55 CPU cores. Interestingly, MediaTek has downgraded the GPU from Mali G76 to Mali G57. The new GPU has half the core count of the G76.

On the other hand, the chipset supports LPDDR4X RAM @ 2133 MHz and UFS 2.2 storage. The latter is an upgrade over G95’s UFS 2.1.

Moving on, Helio G96 has support for up to 108MP cameras, which is gaining popularity in the mid-range segment. Other camera features include dual-camera bokeh capture, Camera Control Unit (CCU), Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), and Rolling Shutter Compensation. Video recording capability is still capped at 4K/30fps.

Over on the display, it supports up to 120Hz refresh rate on an FHD+ panel. Other features include Cat 13 LTE connection and Bluetooth 5.2.

There is no doubt that CG Net has revolutionized Nepal’s internet market with its low-cost 120Mbps plans. Then came DishHome with Rs. 233/month 25Mbps plan for its Lifestyle HD subscribers. And now, Subisu has announced a 150Mbps plan under the “Internet Chha Kamaal Speed Super Babaal” offer. And yeah, you guessed it—this is the highest bandwidth residential internet plan available in Nepal right now.

Subisu 150Mbps Internet Overview:

This new plan from Subisu replaces CG Net’s 120Mbps plan as the highest bandwidth consumer-grade internet plan in the country. It comes bundled with a Clear TV subscription. Users have an option to connect up to 4 TVs under this plan.

Pricing and Availability

In terms of pricing, customers will have to pay for the set-top box and 5GHz Wi-Fi router. You can pay the package fee annually or bi-annually. However, the price of the router is waived completely if you opt for the yearly package.

Anyway, the annual and bi-annual packages will cost you NPR 28,318 and NPR 17,079, respectively. Below is the breakdown of the pricing:

Valve’s Steam Deck handheld gaming PC is a $399 Nintendo Switch killer

Valve has announced its first Nintendo Switch-like handheld gaming console, called the Steam Deck. It lets you play your favorites Steam games on the go. So, let’s get into the specs, features, availability, and expected price of Valve Steam Deck in Nepal.

Valve Steam Deck Overview:

If you’re unaware, Valve is a video-game developer company that also has its hands in the hardware business. It is behind the popular titles like Dota 2, CS: GO, and others.

Design and Display

Here, the Steam Deck is similar to the Nintendo Switch (or Switch OLED) in that it is a handheld gaming machine with full-sized controllers. It also has a detachable dock that allows you to easily connect it to an external monitor.

Steam Deck features a 7-inch optically bonded LCD screen with a 60Hz refresh rate, 400 nits brightness, and an ambient light sensor. This handheld gaming PC measures 298mm x 117mm x 49mm and weighs 669 grams.

Performance

As per its specifications, it is more than a simple game console—it’s a portable PC. Powering the device is an AMD APU with Zen 2-based 4C/8T CPU that has a max turbo frequency of 3.5GHz. On the GPU front, it features octa-core Radeon graphics based on RDNA 2 architecture. Valve says this APU has a configurable TDP between 4 – 15W.

Memory-wise, it comes with 16GB LPDDR5 RAM, and three storage options to choose from. The base variant has 64GB eMMC (PCIe Gen 2 x1), 256GB NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4), 512GB high-speed NVMe SSD (PCIe Gen 3 x4). There’s also a micro SD card slot to expand the storage.

However, the company has confirmed that despite the difference in storage protocols, “there is no in-game difference in frame rates or graphics quality”. In terms of software, the Deck boots on Arch-based SteamOS 3.0. You can even install Windows on the Steam Deck if you’d like.

Controls

Furthermore, this handheld gaming PC is crammed with all the controls you’d expect to see on a console. It has A, B, X, and Y buttons, as well as a D-pad, L and R analog triggers and bumpers, View and Menu buttons, and four assignable grip buttons.

Similarly, there are two 32.5mm square trackpads on the left and right. When compared to the Steam Controller, these trackpads offer 55% lower latency. For easier control, it includes a 6-axis IMU gyroscope too.

On the wireless connectivity front, it utilizes Bluetooth 5.0 and dual-band WiFi (ca). Unlike the Nintendo Switch, it supports Bluetooth audio as well. Additionally, there’s a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C port with DisplayPort 1.4 support that is capable of transferring up to 8K videos at 60Hz.

Besides all of this, the console boasts a stereo speaker setup with a dual-microphone array and stereo 3.5mm headphone jacks. Likewise, with 40Whr of battery, Valve promises up to 8 hours of gameplay (depending on the game).

A dock sold separately

Steam Deck, like the Nintendo Switch, has a dock that lets you connect it to your computer or monitor. This USB Dock provides Display Port, HDMI 2.0, an Ethernet adapter, and three USB (2x USB-A 2.0, 1x USB-A 3.1) inputs. As expected, you’ll have to buy it separately although Valve hasn’t confirmed the price just yet.

We expect the price of the Valve Steam Deck in Nepal to start at around NPR 57,000 if it launches here.
