Xiaomi MI A3 unveiled: A budget device for the Android purists

0

Under Redmi sub-brand Xiaomi garnered an immense success this year with the Redmi Note 7 and Note 7 Pro. These budget devices pack quite a value in the budget segment because of which company managed to sell over 15 million of Note 7 series devices in just a matter of months. To achieve a similar kind of success with its MI series devices, the Chinese smartphone maker recently launched the Xiaomi MI A3. And like all the MI series devices in the past, this one will feature a stock version of Android under the hood.

Overview:

In terms of specs, MI A3 is basically the MI CC9e, which was launched a few weeks back. However, Xiaomi has completely erased the MIUI 10 overlay and put the unadulterated version of Android Pie. The device is also promised with regular software updates and security patches from Google itself.

The handset comes with a 6.01-inch Super AMOLED display with a tiny notch on the top. The switch from LTPS IPS LCD display on the MI A2 to the Super AMOLED on the A3 does look commendable. However, in terms of resolution, it’s a downgrade from MI A2 and even the MI A2 Lite. The device features merely an HD+ display, which may not look as sharp. Despite this parsimony, Xiaomi has generously included Gorilla glass 5 on the top to ensure display protection. Gorilla Glass 5 protection has extended to the rear glass panel as well. So despite the budget nature, it will offer a premium look and feel.

Powering the device is Snapdragon 665 processor complemented with 4GB of RAM. Since there is no significant leap in the performance from SD660 to SD665, there is not much of an upgrade even on the performance front. Although there is no RAM option, Xiaomi is offering 64GB and 128GB variants on the storage side. This time, the company also brought an SD card slot, which is really a good thing.

In terms of cameras, Xiaomi MI A-series has always made quite a mark in its territory. And this legacy seems to continue with the Xiaomi MI A3. The device flaunts a triple camera setup at the back tucked neatly in a vertical configuration. There is a 48MP main camera, which comes capped with an f/1.78 lens. An 8MP wide-angle shooter (118-degree FOV)and 2MP depth sensor complete the triple camera setup on the back. On the front resides a 32MP snapper, which takes up the selfies.

When it comes to the battery, this time there is 4,030mAh unit. And this sounds significantly better than what we saw on the MI A2 (3000mAh). To charge up the device, there is a USB Type-C port, which accepts 18-watt fast charging. However, Xiaomi will include just a 10-watt charger inside the box.

The 3.5mm headphone jack also made a surprise comeback on the MI A3. The fingerprint scanner, however, got relocated under the display. Since under-display fingerprint scanner is quite on the trend, the device may receive attention because of this fancy feature.

Xiaomi MI A3 Specifications:

  • Display: 6.01-inch Super AMOLED with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection

So, let’s hope these phones will be available to us soon so we can see for ourselves what this new series is all about.

Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 with ECG heart rate tracking to launch soon

Attention all the fitness freaks and smartwatch enthusiasts! Samsung brings good news for you… Though still unannounced, the tech giant will launch a new smartwatch soon – which will be a follow-up to one of the existing Samsung smartwatches.

Rumors are already around about a follow-up to the Galaxy Watch Active. The Galaxy Watch Active came out only about 6 months ago. But it seems we’ll have a successor pretty soon. Currently, in only rumors and speculations, the new smartwatch is aptly named Galaxy Watch Active 2. And this time, the watch will include an ECG Heart Rate tracker just like on the Apple Watch Series 4. However, this feature won’t be available at launch. It will come to you via later updates.

samsung galaxy watch 2 specs

Other than the inclusion of the ECG tracker, the watch is not much different than its predecessor. Heart rate trackers are not new for Samsung smartwatches. The previous versions used less accurate light-based trackers. In contrast, the ECG tracker in this watch will utilize electrical signals which provide much accurate detection of health conditions. Furthermore, the Galaxy Watch Active 2 will perform sleep tracking and will record various exercise activities.

Speculation is that the use of ECG tracker is still pending FDA approval. As a result, the feature will not be available upon its release. The feature will likely come out as a post-release update in the first half of 2020. As the Apple Watch series 4 did the same, it isn’t unlikely.

The smartwatch will be available in three variants: one with LTE, one with Bluetooth, and another with an Under Armour special edition featuring an exclusive strap. They will probably make use of Samsung’s One UI software. Also, they will be available in two sizes, 40mm and 44mm.

We can be sure that the device will come out alongside the Galaxy Note 10 next month. But then again, maybe Samsung will actually release a Galaxy Watch 2 instead of the Watch Active 2. We’ll see about that soon enough. However, the release will be in New York. But since the Galaxy Watch Active did not make its way here, we cannot be certain about its release in Nepal.

Major WhatsApp & Telegram security issue on Android allows hackers to manipulate your phone

0

Most of us do not change our default WhatsApp settings. I mean they are the default settings so it probably is there for the best. One of those settings allows media files sent to you to be downloaded directly to your phone’s gallery or to external storage. It is great as it means one less thing for the users to worry about. However, what if I told you that this feature can actually put your device at risk.

Symantec Corporation, a cybersecurity firm, says to have found a security issue with WhatsApp and Telegram for Android. It claims that the flaw could allow hackers to manipulate the files shared between users.

The aforementioned flaw only becomes an issue if you happen to have a malware on your device that has access to your phone’s external storage. If so, then it would allow hackers to intercept your media files and potentially alter them. The attack has been termed as Media File Jacking.

For instance, the images you receive could be manipulated in real-time. This scenario might seem trivial but it nevertheless shows a serious issue in making. A much serious case could be a transaction fraud. Seen from any angle, if not mitigated, this flaw can take a much damaging form.

WhatsApp has affirmed that the issue exists but they are working on possible updates. If it’s an issue, why not simply remove the feature? Well, according to WhatsApp, removing the feature could create privacy complications whilst also limit how media files can be shared. However, an official statement is yet to arrive from Telegram.

We don’t know how long it will be until the update arrives. So, in the mean-time, you can disable the features by going to Settings-Chat-Media Visibility. Though it still won’t prevent files from being stored externally.

Recently announced Snapdragon 855 Plus to power ASUS ROG Phone II

Qualcomm recently announced the launch of Snapdragon 855 plus Mobile Platform. It comes as a mid-year chipset improvement to the Snapdragon 855. The chipset boasts higher CPU and GPU clock speed for improved performance. This incremental upgrade aims to provide elite gaming experience.

qualcomm snapdragon 855 plus mobile platform

The Snapdragon 855 plus features the Kryo 485 CPU core which runs at a clock speed of 2.96GHz. Similarly, the GPU used is Adreno 640. In comparison with the Snapdragon 855, the CPU performance is enhanced by 4% whereas the GPU is boosted by 15%.

While there’s no significant increase in the numbers, Qualcomm is confident that it will increase the bar for elite gamers. Other than these, the platform also brings software enhancements. It includes features such as Game Jank Reducer, Game Anti Cheat Extensions, Game Fast Loader and many more. However, it still does not contain a built-in 5G modem. As a result, the support of 5G connectivity is provided using an external X50 5G modem. It has also updated the AI engine which now offers a total capacity of 7 trillion operations per second (7TOPS).

Other than the tweaks in the CPU and GPU, the Snapdragon 855 plus seems similar to the binned Snapdragon 845. It still uses the multi-gigabyte X24 LTE 4G modem and there’s no change in the RAM and storage support either.

Qualcomm has updated the chipset for gaming and VR applications. So the expectation is that the next generation of gaming phones will include these. The ASUS has recently announced that its next-gen ROG phone II will be the first phone to be powered by the Snapdragon 855 plus. Officials claim that the Snapdragon 855 plus is their most powerful chipset to date. Also, the phone is built upon the success of the Android flagship Snapdragon 855 5G mobile platform, so hopefully, it will not disappoint its users.

Realme 3i launched with diamond-cut back & a 4,230mAh battery

Today marks a new addition to the Realme’s range of budget phones in the form of Realme 3i. Launched alongside the Realme X, this smartphone is set to compete with Xiomi’s Redmi 7A. The phone is basically similar to the Realme 3 available in the Nepali market coupled with the diamond cut-back finish of Realme C2.

Realme 3i offers an octa-core MediaTek Helio P60 Soc with either 3GB + 32GB storage or 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. The screen up front boasts a 6.2 inch IPS HD+ display and a notch to house the 13MP selfie camera. On the back side, it features a 13MP primary camera along with a 2MP secondary one. Also, there is a fingerprint scanner on the back. It is powered by a large 4,230mAh battery which however relies on the dated micro USB port.

A similarity with the past Realme devices can also be found in its software combinations. It uses the combination of ColorOS 6 and Android Pie as its operating system. Realme 3i will be sold in three color combinations, namely: Diamond Blue, Black, and Red.

The phone launched today in India is set to have a starting price of INR 7,999 ($116) for the 3GB + 32GB variant whereas the 4GB + 64GB is set to cost INR 9,999 ($145). Though a budget phone, the diamond cut-back finish will certainly provide its users with a premium feel.

realme 3i display

As mentioned previously, the phone is essentially similar to the Realme 3 available in Nepal. The one available in the Nepalese market uses the upgraded version of the Mediatek Helio P60 which is the Helio P70. Realme 3i, for now, has just been launched only in India. However, with features similar to the one available here, it’s up to the users to decide which one they should go for.

Realme 3i Specifications

  • Display: 6.2-inch IPS display, HD+ (720 x 1520 pixels) resolution, 19:9 aspect ratio
  • Protection: Gorilla Glass 3
  • CPU: MediaTek Helio P60 SoC

  • Storage: 32GB or 64GB

Alcatel 3 now available in Nepal via Daraz

Alcatel is a French mobile brand which is not known in the premium leagues of smartphones, but it has its name in the budget ones. Still, this is not a brand that you can find all over. However, there were talks about it coming to Nepal soon. And now, it seems that it’s finally official – with the Alcatel 3 available for purchase in Nepal.

SHTC International Pvt Ltd. is the official distributor of Alcatel mobiles in Nepal. But SHTC is also a well-known distributor of other electronics like Prolink, Fujitsu, etc. However, it was Daraz that is selling the phone right now. And out of the 4 phones rumored to arrive (Alcatel 1S, Alcatel 1x, Alcatel 3 2019, and Alcatel 3L), the Alcatel 3 2019 is already up for grabs on the site.

alcatel 3 launched in Nepal

Alcatel 3 is a new budget phone in the Nepali market now. Its specs are also very similar to that of a budget phone. After all, it runs on the Snapdragon 439 processor, with 4 GB of RAM. The phone also has the trendy notch cut-out up top but with a display of 5.94″, it is small for a phone of 2019. We rarely see new phones with displays under 6″ these days!

Besides that, you get a standard dual camera set up at the back and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. The dual cameras comprise a primary and a depth sensor, and the display is only HD+. All the characteristics of a typical budget phone. Also, the battery is a 3500 mAh unit, which is okay, actually.

And all this is available for a price of Rs.21,490 in Nepal, from Daraz. We can’t be sure how it is in the offline marketplace. Also, since its very new…it might take time to make its presence in the offline stores.

Alcatel 3 2019 Specifications:

  • Display: 5.94″ IPS LCD display with HD+ resolution (720 x 1560 pixels)
  • Rear Camera: Dual, 16 MP with f/2.0 aperture + 5 MP depth sensor
  • Front Camera: 8 MP with f/2.0
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 439
  • CPU: Octa-core (2×2.0 GHz Cortex-A53 & 6×1.45 GHz Cortex A53)
  • GPU: Adreno 505
  • RAM: 4 GB
  • Storage: 64 GB (expandable via microSD card)
  • OS: Android 9 Pie
  • Battery: 3500 mAh
  • Price: Rs.21,490

Honor 9X leaks ahead of the official launch

0

Honor 9X is most likely launching next week in the Chinese market. However, rumors and speculations are still pouring in about the phone’s specifications. This series of the phone has been gathering a lot of market attention due to their specs and price range.

Honor phones only made their debut recently in Nepal, compared to others. And we can expect a price range of around Rs. 40,000 in the Nepalese market, for these phones, if it lands in Nepal. But since this is the first phone with a Kirin 810, I hope it does.

Regarding the latest development, the phone will be launched in three different variants. Those being HLK-TL00, HLK-AL00, and HLK-AL10. Of course, these are not your official names, just the models. But, I couldn’t find any significant differences in their specs. Nonetheless, here’s what the phones will look like:

Honor 9X specifications:

  • Display: 6.59-inch TFT display
  • Resolution: Full-HD+ (2340 x 1080 pixels) @ 19.5:9 aspect ratio
  • Rear camera: Triple camera, 48MP + 16MP + 2MP
  • CPU: HiSilicon Kirin 810
  • GPU: Mali-G52 MP6
  • RAM: 4GB, 6GB, 8GB
  • Storage: 64GB, 128GB, 256GB
  • OS: Android 9.0
  • Battery: 3900 mAh
  • Colors: Black, Blue, Red, Gradient Violet, Gradient Blue

Some minor changes can be expected on specifications once the device is finally launched. But for the time being, they look fairly similar. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait for long to find out! The device is slated to launch on July 23. So it won’t take us long to figure out how these leaks pan out in real life.

Another app in Google’s graveyard: Blog Compass shutting down!

0

We all know about Google and its huge array of apps, and why shouldn’t we, they have obviously made our lives easier. From Maps to Gmail, we use Google’s services for even the simplest of tasks. But even this silicon valley giant doesn’t have a Midas touch. It was just in April 2019 that Google cut all services of the laughing stock that was Google Plus. Now, there’s a new app that makes its way into the Google graveyard-the Blog Compass.

[Source: androidpolice.com]
Launched in 2018, Blog Compass was a blog management tool that could connect to sites running either WordPress or Blogger. It basically provided bloggers an insight into trending topics and a centralized dashboard for analytics. Bloggers could track their site stats, approve comments and get tips on how to make their blogs successful through the app.

User review might have been a reason for its downfall. It was way back in October 2018 that users started complaining about the app. As per the reviews available for this app in Google Play, users were unable to even sign in using their Google Accounts. Even those who succeeded in signing in were simply greeted by a “Getting Started” message only. According to the Play Store, the app had around 10,000 to 50,000 installs. These numbers were good but not “Google good”!

The abrupt shut down of this app further goes on to show Google’s lack of interest in blogging platforms. Even Blogger, Google’s own blogging platform, has not received any update since 2016. Thus, it’s safe to assume that its interest in this area is dying.

One can never really say why a company of Google’s stature has failed in the ever-growing field of blogging. But I guess its success in other fields makes up for one or two failed ventures.
