Arm unveils its fastest CPU core, Cortex-X4, with 15% performance gain

Arm is the leading force in microprocessor technology for mobile phones, providing a wide variety of cores to meet the performance, power, and cost requirements of many application areas. It has just announced the latest TCS23 mobile computing with Cortex-X4, A720, and A520 clusters at the ongoing Computex 2023.

Arm TCS23 Compute Clusters

It’s essential to understand the latest Cortex-X4, A720, and A520’s lineage in order to fully comprehend its features and capabilities. Each successive Cortex-X family member has further improved CPU efficiency and performance while working in a low-power range. The latest Cortex cores also continue this pattern. The Cortex-X4 is the high-performance core, the Cortex-A720 is responsible for mid-range operations, and the Cortex-A520 is responsible for power efficiency.

Cortex-X4

The Cortex-X4, ARM’s fastest CPU core, provides an impressive performance boost over last year’s Cortex X3. It outperforms the competition by 15% while using the same amount of energy. Added to that, the Cortex-X4 offers a significant 40% reduction in power utilization for the same level of performance. It has a clock frequency of 3.4 GHz.

Cortex-A720

The Cortex-A720 aims to be even more efficient than its predecessors, the A715 and A710 cores. It improves efficiency by 20% over the A715, which was already 20% more efficient than the A710. They can efficiently address complicated tasks which require processing numerous threads simultaneously while using five A720 cores. The A720 has a clock speed that ranges from 2.5 to 3 GHz.

Cortex-A520

The Cortex-A520 saves space in the die by allowing two cores to share execution units. A further important objective was to reduce power usage, ultimately resulting in the A520 being 22% more efficient than the A510. This core is not meant for resource-heavy tasks but for routine background tasks. They have clock speeds ranging from 1.5 GHz to 2.0 GHz.

In actual usage, the Cortex-A520 is unable to show the same significant advancement over prior generations as the A720 and X4. Its capabilities at lower power levels are comparable to the A510.

Arm designed TCS23 to interact with the Android Virtualization Framework (AVF), which was introduced with Android 13. This framework enables the isolation of Android applications in separate sandboxes. It’s worth noting that Arm doesn’t make its own chips, instead, future silicon (produced by Arm’s licensees) will include TCS23. According to Rosinger, Arm expects some TCS23-enabled products to be ready in the market shortly afterward.

Performance and Efficiency of Cortex

Arm clients can modify the chipsets to meet their individual needs and power requirements. While the standard configuration consists of one Cortex-X4, three A720s, and four A520s cores, some may choose a different arrangement, such as 1+5+2. This decision is influenced by expected workloads and power limits. A new chipset with Cortex-X4, A720, and A520 cores in a 1+5+2 configuration achieves a 27% performance gain on Geekbench 6’s multi-threaded test. This is an improvement over the present combination of Cortex-X3, A716, and A510 CPUs (1+3+4) running at the same frequency and storage. It’s worth noting that these performance gains are achieved before taking into account the benefits of a new chip’s technological advancements.

It is crucial to note that the Cortex-X4, A720, and A520 cores do not support the prior 32-bit ARM instruction set. ARM specifically designs them for the ARMv9 instruction set. However, the Cortex-A710 core is available for firms that still require a 32-bit function.

Arm’s Immortalis G720 revolutionizes mobile GPU with Deferred Vertex Shading

3

Along with the release of new generation processor cores, Cortex-X4, A720, and A520, Arm has also unveiled its 5th generation GPUs namely, Immortalis G720, Mali G720, and Mali G620 – as its most awaited computing solutions for 2023.  This time around, Arm has brought up Deferred Vertex Shading, or DVS for the enhancement in bandwidth and power efficiency of GPU, complementing its already achieved features such as Variable Rate Shading and ray tracing.

Differences in Immortalis and Mali GPUs

At present, there are minimal distinctions between Immortalis and Mali. GPUs marketed as Immortalis in Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) chipsets must include a ray-tracing unit, whereas the Mali GPU has the option to include or exclude it.

Also, Immortalis G720 can be configured with up to 16 cores with 10 being the minimum, while the Mali G720 can have between 6 and 9 cores. The more budget-friendly Mali G620 has more limited cores support of only 5.

Improvements in Immortalis G720 GPU

The Immortalis G720 stands out as the best GPU from Arm to date, offering exceptional performance, advanced features, and an efficient design.

Arm 5th Gen Mobile GPU Microarchitecture

It features new technology, as mentioned before, Deferred Vertex Shading, that effectively reduces memory access. Arm emphasizes that memory access accounts for approximately one-third of power consumption in high-end gaming. By minimizing the need for memory access, DVS achieves energy savings, prevents chip overheating, eliminates thermal limitations, and ultimately enhances performance.

The Deferred Vertex Shading Technology

This feature allows the GPU to prioritize and process the shading of vertices at a later stage called fragment shading. It allows significant advantages in terms of performance and efficiency. Using deferring vertex shading, the rendering pipeline avoids storing intermediate data in memory, reducing bandwidth usage and improving overall performance.

Arm Deferred Vertical Shading GPU Technology

The DVS technology is built directly into the new Arm GPU, meaning developers do not need to make any specific adjustments to incorporate its usage. It also provides a greater advantage in ray tracing capabilities of the GPU.

While there is no idea which chipmakers will adopt the Immortalis G720 architecture, it sure is made for flagship devices. Owing to last year’s Immortalis G715 performance, the new generation GPU that has more improved technology is sure to give a bang.

Other Improvements

In addition to its optimized memory access, the Immortalis G720 showcases a 15% improvement in performance per watt, an equal rate of improvement in peak performance, and a boost in frame rate.

Arm has also added a 2x MSAA module, refining the GPU’s ability to handle the anti-aliasing of graphics. The command stream front-end (CSF), responsible for scheduling, has received enhancements with extra working registers for streaming processing.

This app can spot fake and counterfeit products with your phone’s camera

0

Counterfeit products are literally everywhere in the market. Besides the complete final product itself, counterfeit spare parts and components are also way too common. And as such products bear a lot of similarities with the original ones, unsuspecting buyers could go home with subpar products. Thankfully, there’s now an app that lets you spot counterfeit and fake products. Alitheon, a US-based company has developed an app known as the FeaturePrint to tackle the mushrooming growth of counterfeit products.

FeaturePrint App Overview:

This app uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify counterfeit products. Simply take a picture of a part, product, or component and the app will determine whether it’s genuine or not.

How does it work?

The app relies on patented AI algorithms allowing automatic identification of unique features and attributes of a product. It enables human biometrics without the risk of profiling and establishes the unbreakable object link required for blockchain security and the operation of smart contracts.

FeaturePrint App

Basically, the app doesn’t identify counterfeit products but instead uses the digital fingerprint or “FeaturePrint” to identify original products. It gets the new FeaturePrint of the testing product and compares it to the authentic one. This becomes the basis for tracing and segregating duplicate products from the original ones. And it also eliminates the need of identifying objects through QR codes, RFID tags, or barcodes.

Another thing to mention is that FeaturePrint works for a single object only, not a class of objects. In a general sense, the app is only able to extract the characteristics of a specific object, not its entire class. For example, the app can represent a specific AMD Ryzen 7000 series processor, but not the entire Ryzen 7000 family.

Practicality and availability

The FeaturePrint app can be a one-stop solution for businesses to tackle counterfeit issues in production. But genuine parts or products must register their “FeaturePrint” in the app for it to work. So, it might take a longer time for a full implementation around the world.

Unfortunately, this app is exclusively available to businesses only. Which means you can’t just download it from an app store and get to it. The B2B modality is aimed to reach a larger platform for companies to produce genuine products for end consumers. And reports suggest FAST Sneaks and London Bullion Market Association have already begun using Alitheon’s solution.

Samsung Galaxy F54 Overview:

Design and Display

galaxy A54 Vs galaxy F54
Samsung Galaxy A54 Vs Galaxy F54

Besides its familiarity with the Galaxy A54, the Galaxy F54 is actually a rebranded Galaxy M54 that launched a couple of months ago. That means this phone has a plastic back and frames, with a metallic finish for the protruding camera lenses. Available in either Silver or Dark Blue colorways, the phone weighs 199 grams and measures 8.4mm thick. Samsung has also embedded a fingerprint reader into the power button. To compare, the Galaxy A54 has a more premium glass sandwich body and IP67 rating too.

As for the display, you’re looking at a Gorilla Glass 5-protected 6.7″ Super AMOLED Plus screen with an FHD resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. Its peak brightness is rated at 800 nits under High Brightness Mode (HBM), whereas the phone also supports Samsung’s “Vision Booster” technology for enhanced outdoor visibility.

Performance

Performance-wise, Galaxy F54 5G comes with Samsung’s in-house Exynos 1380 5G (5nm) chip. It’s the successor to last year’s Exynos 1280 and is the same processor used in the Galaxy A54. ISPs are silently increasing the price of their low Mbps internet plans!

It looks like the recent price war between Internet Service Providers (ISPs) is finally coming to an end. The competition that started with CG Net’s aggressive entry into the market is practically over after ISPs agreed against the unhealthy competition by undercutting themselves. ISPs are now increasing the price of low Mbps internet plans or abandoning them altogether.

ISP Price War in Nepal

How the ISP Price War really started

CG Net initiated its service in the Kathmandu Valley with residential 120Mbps home plans costing as low as Rs. 999 monthly in 2021. Back then, the said speed and the price it came with were both unheard of in Nepal. This compelled other mainstream ISPs like Worldlink and Vianet to level up. Many introduced new plans and even updated the existing ones to higher speed for free. As a result, high-speed internet plans over 100Mbps became the new norm, with some ISP offerings even going over 1Gbps.

While these high-speed plans offered better value than the plans they were replacing, their popularity took a hit as most subscribers realized they didn’t need all the speed. There was a gap in the market for low-priced home internet plans with moderate speeds. CG tried to capitalize it with its 50Mbps “Super Sasto Packages” for Rs. 649/month. However, then came Wi-Fi Nepal with its 30Mbps package at just Rs. 333/month, which was unheard of before.

Is ISP Price War finally coming to an end?

But it looks like the ISP price war in Nepal has finally come to an end. A recent rumour suggested that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Nepal are gradually increasing the price of their packages to avoid competition within themselves, and we are seeing the results.

Wi-Fi Nepal burst into the ISP scene with super affordable internet packs, which has increased the price by nearly 100%. Likewise, CG Net has completely abandoned the 50Mbps package. You won’t also find the low-cost Purple and Mini Packs on Vianet’s official site either. And in the latest move, DishHome has also raised the rate of its internet plans.

This is what NTA has to say about the increased internet price war

As all of this unfolded, Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) released a notice urging ISPs not to increase the price and to abide by the existing law. It also denied any involvement in the rumoured agreement between ISPs to end the price war. The regulatory authority has said that no directions about internet pricing increases have been issued. Instead, service providers can only change their prices with the approval of the regulatory authority.

The authority has instructed ISPs not to raise their internet price. They must first approve tariffs according to Section 42 of the Telecommunications Act of 2053 and the permit conditions.

But this is where things get confusing. Turns on at the height of the price war when ISPs were introducing low-cost options, and none of the plans were approved by NTA. NTA had even released a notice prior to putting an end to unapproved internet packages.
