OnePlus Nord Watch is here with a big 1.78″ AMOLED display, budget price

The Nord lineup is home to OnePlus’ midrange smartphones, and many of them have done quite well in the market. OnePlus then expanded the brand to include earbuds. Now it has made the Nord lineup a part of the growing smartwatch segment. Today, we will discuss everything about the new OnePlus Nord Watch, including its specs, features, official price, and availability in Nepal.

OnePlus Nord Watch Overview:

Previous Failures

One Plus’ first attempt at making a smartwatch was a disaster, to say the least. Their OnePlus Watch was met with heavy criticism as it lacked a lot. The hardware itself was decent. The biggest gripe was their lackluster health app.

Similarly, their ~$35 OnePlus Band failed too. Despite their failure, with the Nord Watch, OnePlus seems adamant about establishing itself as a well-versed player in the wearable market.

Design

As confirmed earlier, OnePlus Nord Watch features a 1.78-inch AMOLED screen with a resolution of 368 x 448 pixels. The watch will refresh at 60Hz and boasts typical brightness of 500 nits. It is enclosed by a Zinc alloy case rated for IP68 dust and water resistance.

By default, the OnePlus Nord Watch comes with a silicon strap with stainless steel buckle. With the strap included, the watch measures 52.4 grams while the body alone is 35.6 grams. The watch is available in two colors: Deep Blue and Midnight Black.

Fitness/ Health Tracking

OnePlus Nord Watch comes with an optical heart rate sensor capable of recording your heartbeat 24×7 hours. There is also a SpO2 sensor to track your blood oxygen level. The watch even has sleep tracking and women’s monthly cycle. In addition, there are around 105 built-in sports modes.

Rest of the Features

The 230mAh battery of the OnePlus Watch is said to last up to 10 days of typical usage. It also boasts 30 days of standby time. The watch charges via a magnetic charger with OnePlus includes in the box.

The OnePlus Watch is compatible with phones with Android 6.0 and iOS 11.0. It connects with the phone with Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity. You can customize the watch via the N Health app.

MediaTek surpasses Qualcomm to launch Arm v9 SoC with hardware ray-tracing

1

MediaTek announced its latest flagship processor in an event yesterday. Called the Dimensity 9200, it’s the world’s first mobile silicon based on Arm’s v9 architecture. Let’s see what other upgrades MediaTek Dimensity 9200 brings along with the smartphones that are scheduled to launch with this SoC.

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 Overview:

CPU

The Dimensity 9200 is the world’s first chip with Arm v9 architecture, as well as the first to include the Cortex-X3 core. This single core runs at 3.05GHz and is accompanied by three 2.85GHz Arm Cortex-A715 cores and four efficiency Arm Cortex-A510 cores.

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 CPU

Here MediaTek is using TSMC’s second-generation 4nm node (N4P) fabrication process, which has previously been seen on the Dimensity 9000+ and Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. According to the company, the CPU’s peak performance power consumption is reduced by 25% when compared to its predecessor.

GPU

MediaTek has made some worthy advancements on the GPU front as well. The Dimensity 9200 is baked with an all-new 11-core Immortalis G715 GPU from Arm with Vulkan 1.3 support and hardware-based ray tracing. Although this is not the first chip with this tech.

MediaTek Dimensity 9200 GPUInstead, Samsung unveiled the Exynos 2200 as the world’s first hardware-based ray tracing chip. The chipset has MediaTek’s HyperEngine 6.0 Gaming Technology for fast, fluid action.

The GPU also brings Variable Rate Shading (VRS) that allows double machine learning performance over the predecessor, and ARM Fixed Rate Compression (AFRC) for reduced bandwidth usage.

APU, ISP

MediaTek is introducing a sixth-generation AI Processing Unit with the Dimensity 9200. The APU 690 is able to outperforms it predecessor by 35% in the ETHZ5.0 benchmark app.

Similarly, the processor employs the Imagiq 890 ISP, which provides the first native support for RGBW sensors and uses 34% less power. It can work in conjunction with APU via Video Stream Engine to enable device manufacturers to add unique AI-video enhancements to the video stream as it is processed by the ISP.

Rest of the specs

Moving on, this new mobile silicon supports LPDRR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage. It’s also the first chipset to support Wi-Fi 7, with data transfers of up to 6.5Gbps. Rest of the connectivity option include Sub-6GHz, mmWave, and Bluetooth 5.3

1

Xiaomi has unveiled the Redmi 10C smartphone in Nepal. It’s the successor to last year’s Redmi 9C. In this article, we will go through the specs, features, availability, and official price of Redmi 10C in Nepal.

Best Budget Fitness Trackers in Nepal [Updated]

In this article, we’ve listed the best budget fitness trackers that you could buy in Nepal right now. Fitness trackers (aka fitness bands) have made our lives a lot easier. And while keeping track of health may have become easy because of such devices, buying the perfect one for you is a different story altogether.

You can go for a full-fledged smartwatch or maybe a modest fitness tracker. Or instead, you can choose one from the now trending budget fitness trackers. So in this article, we’ll be talking about the best cheap, budget fitness trackers (fitness bands) you can buy in Nepal. Let’s begin.

Best budget fitness trackers in Nepal:

7. Amazfit Band 5

Amazfit Band 5 Olive Fitness Trackers Best Budget Nepal

Taking the seventh position on our list of best budget fitness trackers in Nepal is the Amazfit Band 5. If you didn’t already know, Amazfit’s parent company Huami also manufactures Xiaomi’s wearables which include the Mi Band 5, 6, and other newer modes. And the Amazfit Band 5 is pretty similar to the Mi Band 5 which is no longer in Nepal.

Anyway, it features a 1.1″ AMOLED screen with a peak brightness of 450 nits. Just like its previous iterations, Amazfit has installed a 2.5D reinforced glass and anti-fingerprint coating on this one too. And as you’d expect, this panel is extremely vibrant with great contrast and plenty of brightness to be visible in outdoor situations as well. As for health tracking, the Amazfit Band 5 includes an SpO2 sensor for logging your blood oxygen saturation levels.

Built-in Alexa

Now, even though none of the fitness trackers is a substitute for a dedicated medical device, Amazfit Band 5’s SpO2 monitoring is still a decent indicator of your health. Moreover, it has 24/7 heart rate (PPG heart rate sensor), 24-hour sleep, step, stress, sports (11 in total: walking, yoga, cycle, jump rope, swim, freestyle, etc.), and women’s health (menstrual cycle, ovulation phases) tracking.

Besides this, it also has Amazon Alexa built-in. Although you won’t be able to make phone calls on this, Amazfit lets you get your answers, translations, or set alarms via Alexa. The Amazfit Band 5 boasts an incredible battery life too; 15 days under normal usage and up to a whopping 25 days under battery-saving mode. And this fitness band fuels up using Amazfit’s magnetic charger in a little over an hour.

Amazfit Band 5 - Color Options

Okay, while the Amazfit Band 5 is certainly a competent entry-level fitness tracker, it’s best that you expand your budget and get something newer instead. Like the Amazfit Band 7, Redmi Band Pro, or other ones that you’ll come across later in this list of best budget fitness trackers in Nepal. Not only do they look much more modern than the Band 5, but their feature suite—including health and fitness tracking ones—are a lot more mature as well.

Amazfit Band 5 Specifications:

  • Display: 1.1″ AMOLED panel, 294 x 126 pixels resolution
  • Dial shape: Elliptical
  • Body: 18.15 x 12.4 x 47.2 mm, 24gm (with TPU strap)
  • Strap: Removable silicone strap, 18mm width
  • Battery: 125mAh, Up to 15 days endurance, 2-pin POGO pin charging (magnetic)
  • Connection: Bluetooth v5.0 LE
  • Compatible with: Android 5.0, iOS 10 and above
  • IP Rating: 5 ATM water-resistance
  • Sensors: 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope, PPG heart rate, SpO2 sensor
  • Functions: Alarm, Calories Burned, DND, Heart Rate Monitor, Notifications, Sleep Tracking, Step Counter, Stress, Women’s Health, Breathing Exercise, Sports Mode (11), Alexa built-in
  • Companion App: Zepp (Android | iOS)
  • Colors: Midnight Black, Olive, Orange
  • Price in Nepal: Rs. 4,400

6. Mi Smart Band 6

Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 6 - Black

The next entry in our list of best budget fitness trackers in Nepal is the Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 6 (or Mi Band 6). As other manufacturers shift to a bigger form factor in their newest fitness bands, Xiaomi followed suit as well. Compared to the 1.1″ screen on its predecessor, the Mi Band 6 has a bigger 1.56″ AMOLED display. Despite this, both of them are packaged in a similar body.

This means that Xiaomi has gotten rid of the top and bottom bezels to accommodate a bigger screen. While this big screen sure does look nice, the cramped layout means it doesn’t quite solve the issues with the smaller display on the Mi Band 5. The font size in notifications and other menus is quite small and it’s relatively less readable compared to say… the Honor Band 6 or numerous other options that you’ll come across later on this list.

SpO2 monitoring

Despite this, the system text, animations look quite sharp here and colors pop out quite nicely as well. Another upgrade in last year’s Mi Band is the inclusion of blood oxygen (SpO2) monitoring. While it doesn’t support continuous SpO2 tracking, it can record your SpO2 levels overnight. Besides this, the Mi Band 6 can keep track of your heart rate, stress, and sleep quality as well.

mi band 6 price nepal

As for exercises, this fitness tracker supports 30 fitness modes in total, including ones like HIIT, basketball, zumba, pilates, and more. And it can automatically recognize and start recording 6 workouts on its own too. Mi Band 6 packs the same 125mAh battery that’s rated to last up to 14 days in normal mode.

Mi Smart Band 6 Specifications:

  • Display: 1.56″ AMOLED panel, 326 x 152 pixels resolution, 326 PPI
  • Dial shape: Elliptical
  • Body: 18.6 x 12.7 x 47.4 mm, 12.8gm
  • Strap: Removable silicone strap, 18mm width
  • Battery: 125mAh, Up to 14 days endurance; 2-pin POGO pin charging (magnetic)
  • Connection: Bluetooth v5.0 LE
  • Compatible with: Android 5.0, iOS 10.0 and above
  • IP Rating: 5 ATM water-resistance
  • Sensors: 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope, PPG heart rate sensor, SpO2 sensor
  • Functions: Alarm, Calories Burned, DND, Heart Rate Monitor, Notifications, Sleep Tracking, Step Counter, Stress, Women’s Health, Breathing Exercise, Sports Mode (30)
  • Companion App: Mi Fit (Android | iOS)
  • Colors: Black, Blue, Orange, Yellow, Olive, Ivory
  • Price in Nepal: Rs. 5,999

5. Honor Band 6

Honor Band 6 - Sandstone Grey

Moving on, the Honor Band 6 takes the fifth spot in our list of best budget fitness trackers in Nepal. Now, it is quite similar to the Huawei Band 6 below, so I’ll be keeping this short here. The Honor Band 6 arrives in a similar build as its Huawei counterpart, but this one has a slightly inferior design language.

While the Huawei Band 6 has a metallic finish on its polymer fiber frame, the one on the Honor Band 6 is plain plastic—and there’s a rather off-putting “Honor” branding on the left frame as well. But since that part won’t be the center of attraction when putting on this fitness band, it’s not that big a deal.

On top of this, the Honor Band 6 is 5 ATM resistant as well. As a result, you can wear it even during deep dive swimming sessions without a care in the world. Plus, the band can even track your swimming workout. Talking about workouts, this can track 10 of them in total—including automatic detection of 6 workouts. These include indoor and outdoor running, indoor and outdoor walking, rowing, and elliptical machine.

No 24-hour SpO2 tracking

Compared to the Huawei Band 6 which boasts 96 workout modes, this is a pretty small number. Yet, it is crucial to understand that Huawei’s wearable basically records the same health metrics in all those 80+ miscellaneous workouts. However, it does bring a couple of crucial features like all-day SpO2 monitoring and newer TruSleep 2.0 that the Honor Band 6 lacks.

Honor Band 6 Launched Price Nepal Fitness Band Tracker

Fueling this budget fitness tracker is a 180mAh battery that is rated to last up to 2 weeks. Under regular usage, you can easily squeeze out 10 days of endurance from this thing. Plus, the Honor Band 6 also supports fast charging which takes its battery from 0 to 100% in under 50 minutes.

Honor Band 6 Specifications:

4. Redmi Smart Band Pro

Redmi Smart Band Pro - Black

And taking the fourth position on our list of best budget fitness trackers in Nepal is the Redmi Smart Band Pro. This is the first Redmi-branded fitness band to officially arrive in the Nepali market. And it’s quite a capable fitness tracker as well. You can keep track of over 110 exercise modes here; including the basic ones like running, walking, cycling, and pool swimming, all the way to yoga, trail running, and more.

And it can automatically record walking, running, and treadmill exercises as well. It’s got a nice suite of health-tracking features too. Redmi Smart Band Pro supports 24-hour heart-rate monitoring and it can also alert you if your heart-rate level is abnormally high or abnormally low. Besides this, there’s also stress, sleep, female health tracking, and breathing exercise support.

No all-day SpO2 monitoring

Unfortunately, it can’t automatically keep a log of your blood oxygen level all through the day. In the current day and age, that’s quite an important omission. So if you want 24-hour SpO2 tracking, then you can check out other entries on our list of best budget fitness trackers in Nepal instead. Getting to design, the Redmi Smart Band Pro looks pretty basic for a 2022 fitness tracker. And it doesn’t help that the band is available only in a single black color option.

Anyway, while there’s no dust protection here, it is 5 ATM water-resistant up to 50 meters deep. Redmi Smart Band Pro also sports a nice 1.47″ AMOLED display with an incredible 100% NTSC color coverage. And apart from its sharp pixel density, this fitness band can also stay plenty bright outdoors thanks to its 450 nits max brightness. When it comes to watch faces, Redmi gives you over 50 options to choose from here.

Redmi Smart Band Pro Price in Nepal

That certainly isn’t a lot compared to what competitors like Huawei, Honor, and Amazfit offer for their fitness bands, but that selection should grow over time. And I gotta say that Redmi’s available watch face options are quite nice too. This fitness band promises two weeks of battery life under typical usage—or up to 20 days under power-saving mode via its 200mAh battery. And it fuels up via a regular 2-pin magnetic POGO connector.

Redmi Smart Band Pro Specifications:

  • Display: 1.47″ AMOLED panel, 368 x 194 pixels resolution, 100% NTSC

3. Huawei Band 6

Huawei Band 6 - Amber Sunrise

Now, the bronze medal in our list of best budget fitness trackers goes to the Huawei Band 6. It is actually quite similar to the comparatively cheaper Honor Band 6 above—and also the Huawei Band 7 that you’ll find later on this list. And considering everything you’re getting for the price, this is easily one of the best budget fitness trackers in Nepal right now.

From its bold design to other perks, it outclasses much of the competition by a long shot. It sports a wide, large 1.47″ AMOLED display for excellent visibility and readability. So every UI elements are much easier to read and comprehend here, while navigating through swipes on this comparatively wider screen is also quite easier. Not to mention, the color reproduction and brightness levels of this screen are fantastic as well.

Premium build quality

Anyway, it has a fairly premium build quality too. This polymer fiber watch frame brings a metallic texture that feels quite nice. It also has a button on the side to wake up the screen or trigger the menu. Huawei also promises up to 96 workout modes on this fitness tracker. However, besides the 10 professional modes, all it does on the remaining ones is track your heart rate, calories burnt, and classify the stress of training.

Huawei Band 6 Color Options Design Display

And like most other fitness trackers, the Huawei Band 6 also supports automatic workout detection. Moving on, a unique feature of this band compared to every other entry in our list of best budget fitness trackers in Nepal so far, is its ability to record your blood oxygen levels throughout the day. More specifically, the Huawei Band 6 graphs your SpO2 level every 30 minutes all day.

Additionally, its TruSleep 2.0-powered sleep tracking can detect 6 major sleep problems and up to 200 suggestions to improve your sleep quality. In terms of battery endurance, Huawei says the band can last up to 14 days under normal usage. And it fuels up via a proprietary 2-pin POGO magnetic charger.

Huawei Band 6 Specifications:

  • Display: 1.47″ AMOLED panel, 368 x 194 pixels resolution
  • Dial shape: Squarish
  • Body: 25.4 x 11.45 x 43 mm, 18gm (without strap)
  • Strap: Proprietary silicone strap (removable)

2. Amazfit Band 7

Amazfit Band 7 - Black

Likewise, the new Amazfit Band 7 takes the second spot on our list of best budget fitness trackers in Nepal. Compared to the Amazfit Band 5 above, this guy introduces a massive upgrade on the design front, While the Band 5 had this classic slim, narrow display, the Amazfit Band 7 gets a much wider 1.47″ AMOLED display instead. That translates to a roughly 112% larger viewing area here. So every UI element including texts, icons, and animations look much clearer on this fitness band.

Not just that, but the actual quality of its display is quite nice as well; be it in terms of sharpness, colors, brightness, or viewing angles. It also supports Always-on Display (AoD) and Amazfit says there are over 50 watch faces with matching AoD for the Band 7. As for the color options, you can find this fitness band in multiple finishes including black, beige, pink, green, and more. But not all of them have made it to the Nepali market.

Fluid Zepp OS

In terms of software, the Amazfit Band 7 runs on the company’s proprietary Zepp OS platform (do note that Amazfit’s newer smartwatches run on the updated Zepp OS 2.0 platform instead). With this, you can expect a well-designed software experience with fluid UI/UX responsiveness. There’s also an app store here that lets you install up to 10 mini-apps.

Amazfit Band 7 Price in Nepal Specifications Where to buy

When it comes to health monitoring, the Amazfit Band 7 covers most options you’d expect from a budget fitness tracker. From 24 hour heart-rate, SpO2, and stress tracking to sleep monitoring, it can do them all. And I find the one-tap measurement feature especially useful where I can get my heart rate, blood-oxygen saturation, and stress level reading with just one tap instead of having to individually measure them one by one.

Amazfit Band 7 is also pretty great at fitness tracking. The company says it can log over 120 different sports modes here, although the majority of them keep track of your heart rate, calories burnt, and other basic data only; instead of workout-specific metrics. Thanks to its 5 ATM water resistance, the Band 7 can also record your pool swimming exercises. Then there’s the PAI health assessment system, which encourages you to engage in daily exercise routines by assigning a score to your entire day’s health and fitness data.

And among the 120 sports modes, the band can also automatically recognize and record 4 of them. These include walking, running, elliptical, and rowing machines. As for the battery, the Amazfit Band 7 sports a 232mAh cell that promises up to 18 days of endurance on a typical usage pattern. And that number goes down to around 12 days under a heavy usage scenario with a lot of fitness tracking.

Amazfit Band 7 Specifications:

  • Display: 1.47″ AMOLED panel, 368 x 198 pixels resolution
  • Dial shape: Squarish
  • Body: 24.36 x 12.2 x 42.33 mm, 28gm (with strap)
  • Strap: TPU strap (16mm wide)
  • Battery: Up to 18 days endurance; 2-pin POGO pin charging (magnetic)
  • Connection: Bluetooth v5.2 (BLE)
  • Compatible with: Android 7.0, iOS 12.0 and above
  • IP Rating: 5 ATM water-resistance
  • Sensors: BioTracker 3.0 PPG biometric (supports blood-oxygen, 1PD + 2LED), 3-axis acceleration, Geomagnetic
  • Functions: Alarm, Calories Burned, DND, Heart Rate Monitor, Notifications, Sleep Tracking, Step Counter, Sports Mode (120), Blood Oxygen, Women’s Health, Amazon Alexa support
  • Companion App: Zepp (Android | iOS)
  • Colors: Black, Beige, Pink
  • Price in Nepal: Rs. 6,799

1. Huawei Band 7

Huawei Band 7 - Flame Red

Finally, the number one spot on our list of best budget fitness trackers goes to the newly launched Huawei Band 7. It is quite similar to last year’s Huawei Band 6 (which is still available in Nepal by the way), but kicks in a few extra features like Always-on Display support and slightly slimmer and lighter build quality. More importantly, Huawei Nepal has launched the Band 7 at a somewhat reasonable price considering how the Band 6 made its debut at an outrageous price of Rs. 9,490.

Anyway, Huawei Band 7 continues the legacy of its predecessors almost to a fault. By that, I mean how the company has introduced so few upgrades this time. From the display and battery life to all the health and fitness tracking it is pretty much the same as the Huawei Band 6. So while that essentially means Band 6 owners have no reason to upgrade to this, if you’re in the market for a new fitness band, this is definitely one of the best options available in Nepal right now.

First up is its spacious 1.47″ AMOLED display that is plenty sharp, colorful, and bright enough to deliver clear outdoor visibility. I would’ve liked to see Huawei add automatic brightness adjustment this time but that’s non-existent here. But the Band 7 does have this option that automatically dims the display at night when enabled. It’s not the most elegant solution out there, but I’ll take it.

Attractive color options

Anyway, it has a fairly nice build quality as well. Available in four color options, the Huawei Band 7 uses polymer materials for the case with a nice satin matte finish. For easier navigation, it has a button on the right frame with which you can wake up the screen, go to the homescreen, or launch the workout menu. Its strap is user-removable and you can also find third-party straps for the Huawei Band 7.

Huawei Band 7 Price in Nepal

As for fitness tracking, it supports a total of 96 workout modes—just like its predecessor. The band can also detect a few exercises including walking, running, and more on its own. And after you complete a workout, it gives a fairly detailed read of the session, including training load. But unfortunately, there is no built-in GPS on this fitness band, so you’ll need your phone for that.

Huawei Band 7 has got most health monitoring features covered. This includes all-day heart rate, stress, and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). It can also send you an alert in case any of those values hit an abnormal level. And with TruSleep 2.0 algorithm, Band 7 can detect 6 major sleep problems and up to 200 suggestions to improve your sleep quality. Battery-wise, Huawei promises up to 2 weeks of endurance here. Just like in the Band 6.

Huawei Band 7 Specifications:

  • Display: 1.47″ AMOLED panel, 368 x 194 pixels resolution
  • Dial shape: Squarish
  • Body: 26 x 9.99 x 44.35 mm, 16gm (without strap)
  • Strap: Proprietary silicone strap (removable)
  • Battery: Up to 14 days endurance; 2-pin POGO pin charging (magnetic)
  • Connection: Bluetooth v5.0
  • Compatible with: Android 6.0, iOS 9.0 and above
  • IP Rating: 5 ATM water-resistance
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Optical heart rate
  • Functions: Alarm, Calories Burned, DND, Heart Rate Monitor, Notifications, Sleep Tracking, Step Counter, Stress, Women’s Health, Breathing Exercise, Sports Modes (96)
  • Companion App: Huawei Health (Android | iOS)
  • Colors: Graphite Black, Flame Red, Wilderness Green, Nebula Pink
  • Price in Nepal: Rs. 7,990

Redmi Pad Review: The New Budget Tablet King

In this review, I will be discussing my experience of using the all-new Redmi Pad for around a month. For starters, this is Xiaomi’s first tablet under the Redmi brand, a division that has built its entire reputation with value-for-money bargains. And this just feels like yet another winner and I have a lot to talk about it.

Before we begin

But I’m going to hold my excitement for later and start with a major concern. Like I said in my budget tablet buy-guide video, the thing that initially impressed me about the Redmi Pad was its software. But it turns out that the software experience across multiple memory configurations of this tablet is not the same.

You see, the base 3/64GB variant of the Redmi Pad skips even some basic features like split-screen and floating window. And the company has been really sneaky about it, only mentioning it deep down the product page.

And if an experienced reviewer like My Next Tablet can get fooled, I believe it’s even worse for general consumers. So, even if the starting price feels tempting, the base 3/64GB variant is not “THE RIGHT CHOICE”. I personally think the 4/128GB is the best value but unfortunately, it is not available in Nepal. Only the 6/128GB variant is available in Nepal which costs Rs. 34,999.

Redmi Pad Specifications:

  • Body: 250.38 x 157.98 x 7.05mm, 445 gm, All-metal build
  • Display: 10.61-inches IPS LCD panel, 90Hz refresh rate, 400 nits brightness, 1 Billion colors
  • Resolution: 2K (1200 x 2000 pixels)
  • Chipset: MediaTek Helio G99 (6nm Mobile Platform)
  • Memory: 3/4/6GB LPDDR4X RAM, 128GB UFS 2.2 storage (fixed)
  • Software & UI: Android 12 with MIUI for Pad on top
  • Rear Camera: Single (8MP sensor, 105-degree FOV)
  • Front Camera: Single (8MP sensor)
  • Audio: Quad-speaker setup, Dolby Atmos
  • Security: No fingerprint sensor, Face unlock
  • Sensors: Accelerometer, Light, Magnetometer, Gyroscope, Color Temperature
  • Connectivity: WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac (Dual-band), Bluetooth 5.3, USB Type-C
  • Battery: 8000mAh with 18W fast charging (22.5W adapter provided)
  • Color Options: Graphite Gray, Moonlight Silver, Mint Green
  • Price in Nepal: Rs. 34,999 (6/128GB)
  • What’s inside the box: Tablet, Power adapter, USB-A to USB-C cable, quick start guide, warranty card

Software

With pricing out of the way, let’s get back to the Redmi Pad review, starting with the software, which honestly was a major surprise for me. I was not expecting much in this department as it is not Xiaomi’s strongest suit based on my experience with the Xiaomi Pad 5. So, I was taken aback by this version of MIUI for Pad when I started using it. It’s surprisingly light, void of bloatware apps, and comes with some really useful features.

For starters, it has this iPadOS-like dock that houses up to 7 frequently used apps, with space for recently used apps on the right.

You can use the dock to quickly launch an app. Or once an app is open, you can simply drag a second app from the dock to open it in a floating window or trigger the split-screen mode. Redmi Pad even allows you to save split-screen combos on the homescreen, saving you a ton of time when accessing your favorite pair of apps. Like browsing Chrome while you’re simultaneously watching a YouTube video, for example.

And the good thing is that the dock is accessible from the homescreen as well as other apps, making it a great tool for multitasking. Another feature that I’m quite fond of here is the lock screen YouTube playback. It’s not as flexible as the Background Stream on Oppo Pad Air but it’s useful nonetheless.

While I could go on and on about Redmi Pad’s software, the point is that Xiaomi is certainly on the right track with this edition of MIUI for Pad, building helpful features on top of a clean UI. The company has even promised three years of security and two generations of Android updates.

In future editions though, I would love to see Xiaomi add an option to opt out of this style of control center since it doesn’t make sense in a tablet. I would also appreciate a sidebar of some sort with shortcuts for smart functions like screenshots and screen recording baked in. And a cross-device collaboration feature would be fantastic as well.

Design and Display

Now let’s get into the design side of things. While most budget tablets sport a plastic-metal hybrid build quality, Redmi has gone with an all-metal body that feels sturdy and fairly premium too. Likewise, the matte finish on the back also helps conceal fingerprints.

Over on the front, you get a 90Hz display, which is a first in the budget segment. No wonder Redmi Pad feels smoother than any of its competitors! That’s especially noticeable when switching between landscape and portrait modes. What’s even better is that the tablet knows when to switch back to 60Hz to save battery.

Redmi Pad 90Hz Refresh Rate

Other than that, Redmi Pad has 10.6” 2K LCD screen which is pretty standard among other budget tablets that I have reviewed recently. There’s also Widevine L1 certification which means you can stream movies and shows at high resolution on your favorite OTT platforms. In my spare time this festive season, I binged Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Netflix, and the neon lights of the Night City looked great on the Redmi Pad.

The screen gets quite bright while the colors and contrast are on point too. And it’s paired with powerful quad speakers which sound quite enjoyable when watching movies and such. I do wish it was a bit louder though. The audio quality is kinda flat by default, but you can tweak it a little using the Dolby Atmos equalizer.

Performance and Battery

Moving on, Redmi Pad is powered by MediaTek’s Helio G99 chip, which brings a decent balance of raw performance and power efficiency. It is based on TSMC’s 6nm process, which when paired with the tablet’s 8,000mAh battery, results in excellent battery life.

Redmi Pad supports 18W charging, and you get a 22.5W charger in the box itself which takes the tablet from 0 to 100% in over 2.5 hours. A full charge usually lasted me for 3 days under casual usage, consisting of a lot of media consumption and scrolling through different social media apps.

Gaming Experience

I also added a few games to the mix every now and then during my review of the Redmi Pad. And yes, you can get a fairly playable experience on most games by adjusting the settings a little. For instance, PUBG: Mobile runs stable at 40 fps on Smooth graphics and Ultra frame rates. But since Redmi Pad doesn’t have a gyro sensor, it might feel somewhat restrictive to those who are used to it.

Likewise, you can enjoy stable 60 fps gameplay on Mobile Legends: Bang Bang with graphics and frame rate both set to high. I also tried some higher refresh rate games here. Alto’s Odyssey runs at 90 fps while there are noticeable frame drops in comparatively demanding titles like Black Ops and Mech Arena.

Day-to-Day Usage

That aside, Helio G99 on the Redmi Pad is powerful enough to handle your day-to-day usage and light multitasking. You will have no problem reading e-books, writing emails, and attending online classes with this thing. Although Xiaomi doesn’t bundle Redmi Pad with any stylus, you can use a third-party stylus such as WiWU Pencil Max to take notes. Also, while the built-in note app has a handwritten mode, I recommend using third-party apps like Squid instead for a better experience.

Redmi Pad with Third-Party Stylus

For online classes, there is an 8MP front-facing camera. It is not anything to write home about but can get you through casual video calls. Redmi is also set to introduce Apple’s Center Stage-like feature called “FocusFrame” with future software upgrades to make full use of the front camera’s wide 105° field of view. Then there’s an 8MP shooter at the back that you can use to scan notebooks and homework.

Redmi Pad Review: Conclusion

Wrapping up this review, Xiaomi has clearly scored another winner with its latest budget tablet. The company has struck a fine balance between affordability, usability, and features, making the Redmi Pad the best budget tablet in the market right now. Other than the software limitations on the base variant and a few other minor drawbacks, this is an excellent budget tablet. And the one to beat for other new newcomers.

Redmi Pad Review: Pros and Cons

  • Smooth 90Hz display
  • MIUI for Pad looks promising
  • Great Battery Life
  • Decent gaming
