As the world battles COVID-19, something more deadly might be coming!

If we take a look back in the history of epidemics, pandemics and other deadly diseases, what is clear is that all of those have been a result of human activities (or rather cruelties). The HIV virus spread from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Swine Flu originated from a pig farm in Mexico; all because humans butchered and savored those animals in an unimaginable way. COVID-19 (coronavirus), as everyone is aware of by now, is believed to be a result of merciless killing and selling of exotic and wild animals in a market in Wuhan, China!

So, don’t be surprised at how and why all of this virus spread is happening in the world. The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned the world of an unknown virus (codenamed Virus X at that time) for years now. With all the factory farms, animal meat market, exotic animal trading, the situation that we are going through right now was expected if not apparent.

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Exposing them all!

Wayne Hsiung, the co-founder of Direct Action everywhere, is facing a total of 16 felonies for whistleblowing the kind of treatment animals get inside US factory farms. In a recent video by him, he explains how dreadfully overcrowded and unsanitary those factory farms are. These places, as he explains are perfect grounds for breeding infections.

Animals in such places are fed antibiotics, such as tetracycline, penicillin, and carbadox. These drugs banned in most countries for the effects they have on human health.

So, why isn’t anyone with authority addressing these threats? Well, turns out, the US meat industry sends in a lot of money in political donations and the pharmaceutical industries spend a lot in lobbying. Because of this, they get a free check to do whatever they want.

Hence, those dreadful conditions continue to be the way they are, resulting in more viruses and flu outbreaks. So, if we look from that perspective, we are likely to face something more dangerous in the future.

Taking a look at the mortality rate of some pandemics

The entire world is blaming China for the outbreak right now. But a dangerous disease could easily spread from anywhere in the world. That’s because of the evidently horrible conditions the meat industry operates in. If we look at the mortality rate, the number of people who have died of the Coronavirus is around 3.4% in the entire world (to date). In comparison, Smallpox had a mortality rate that was as high as 30%. Likewise, Ebola killed around 50% of infected people.

This does not mean, by any means, we should take the COVID-19 (coronavirus) lightly. But here, what we are trying to give a heads-up to is something more dangerous that might occur in the future, if we don’t change!

It’s not the chicken’s fault that it’s bred in horrible conditions. When that chicken catches a deadly virus, humans still don’t understand that it’s the breeders’ fault to keep them in such conditions. Rather, it’s the government’s fault for failing to implement a check mechanism. The consumers who buy the meat knowing how it’s prepared are also at fault here.

Therefore, after the COVID-19 (coronavirus) is over (which we hope for the soonest), it might not be long before another pandemic starts. That one might have an even higher mortality rate, endangering the human species as a whole – once again.

OnePlus Pay is now available for OnePlus 7T owners in China

These days, smartphone brands aren’t just smartphone brands. Companies are always looking for ways to expand their portfolios. And the latest brand to embark on a new adventure is OnePlus, which has launched its own mobile payment system called “OnePlus Pay” in China. Let’s find more about the new digital payment solution from the Chinese giant.

OnePlus Pay

The launch of OnePlus Pay is not surprising news. OnePlus first teased the product during the launch event of the OnePlus 7T series last year. The company has kept its promise of making OnePlus Pay official in 2020. As of now, this app is only available in OnePlus 7T series devices that run on Hydrogen OS. In case you are hearing it for the first time, Hydrogen OS is the Chinese adaptation of the Oxygen OS. The app is available in the Wallet section of the latest stable version of the Hydrogen OS.

Check out our review of OnePlus 7T

OnePlus Pay is no different than digital wallets from other companies because it utilizes NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. It is even easier to use in a POS terminal with Quick Flash supports as the user only needs to type in the password to complete a transaction. You can launch the service just by double-clicking the power key on OnePlus 7T devices that are running the latest version of both Hydrogen OS and Wallet App.

OnePlus Pay’s Competition

Everyone is expecting OnePlus Pay to battle against the likes of Google Pay and Samsung Pay. However, since both of them are already a success in the global market, OnePlus wants to conquer the Chinese market first. So the immediate rivals to the OnePlus Pay are apps like Alipay and WeChat and it needs to support most of the mainstream banks in China to stand above them.

Global Launch

As of now, the digital payment app is available only for the Chinese audience. However, the company is working on making it available in other regions of the world. Rumors suggest that the Chinese launch will be followed by a launch in the US. The app will also land in India in the future. We are expecting to hear more from OnePlus during the launch event of its OnePlus 8 series which is scheduled for next month.

After it is available globally, we have to see how it fairs against similar payment solutions. Will people choose it over Mi Pay, Samsung Pay, Realme PaySa and Google Pay?

Samsung Galaxy A31 is officially here with a Super Amoled display and quad-camera setup

0

The coronavirus pandemic might have forced a worldwide lock-down, but one thing it certainly has not been able to stop is the launch of new smartphones. Just yesterday, Samsung officially added a new device to its list of mid-range devices. Yup, the Samsung Galaxy A31 has officially here. And it is here to spice up the game. Now, the device has been announced during a lock-down, so obviously, we won’t see it here in Nepal soon. However, I do believe, once launched, the price of Samsung Galaxy A31 in Nepal will be reasonable.

Overview

Let’s begin with the display. It has a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED screen with a 1080p+ resolution. I was kind of hoping that this device would launch with a punch-hole display, however, they have opted for a subtle U-shaped notch with this one. The notch houses a 20MP selfie shooter. And as with smartphones with AMOLED display, this one too has an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Moving on, the rear camera on this one is a quad-cam setup. Positioning and display-wise, the camera setup looks similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy M31. The primary lens is of 48MP and it is backed up by an 8MP ultra-wide lens, a 5MP macro lens, and a 5MP depth sensor.

Under the hood, the Samsung Galaxy A31 uses MediaTek Helio P65 chipset. This chipset includes two Cortex-A75 CPU’s and performance-wise it should be somewhat similar to the Galaxy M31. In terms of memory, it comes with two variants – 4GB and 6GB. And the available storage options are 64GB and 128GB respectively. However, there is a microSD slot available for those looking to expand the storage.

Finally, this smartphone packs in a huge 5000mAh battery that supports 15W fast charging. They could have bumped it up to 20W maybe but 15W is what we get in this one.

Samsung Galaxy A31 Specifications:

Body 6.27 x 2.88 x 0.34 inches; 185 gm
Display 6.4-inches Super AMOLED panel with 1080 x 2400 pixel resolution
Chipset MediaTek Helio P65

Samsung Galaxy A31 Price in Nepal, Availability

Samsung Galaxy A31 will be available from April. However, in this instance, we don’t know the exact date nor the pricing of the device. The device is comparable to the Galaxy M31 and thus its pricing should be comparable to that of the M31. So, my guess would be that the price of Samsung Galaxy A31 will be somewhere around $200-$210 and its price in Nepal should also be similar i.e MRP 25,000.

Royole brings the new Flexpai 2 with gap-less hinge, Snapdragon 865 & a whole lot more!

Besides 5G, foldable phones are the next big thing in the smartphone industry right now. With Samsung and Huawei already competing for the top spot, other companies like TCL are also trying to establish a name for themselves. But alas, there’s someone else, a different entity that birthed the whole thing – Royole. The company’s first-gen foldable phone dubbed the “Royole FlexPai“, was the first mass-produced device of its kind. And it was not just a proof-of-concept either. Now, Royole has unveiled its successor. The Royole FlexPai 2 brings so many upgrades to its predecessor, be it structural or in terms of pure computing power.

Overview

First and foremost, the company has been clever in overhauling the hinge mechanism. The uncomfortable folding mechanism on the original FlexPai was a major complaint, and it looks like Royole has worked effortlessly on that. The new “3S Hinge” is now gapless, thus making it much more pocketable. According to the company, this hinge is manufactured using 0.01mm precise processing and with materials like liquid metal/durable aluminum titanium for core parts. The hinge can also be adjusted at any angle like you would a laptop. Moreover, this hinge also has an anti-shock structure that protects the display.

Enter, the 3rd generation Cicada Wing fully flexible display!

And talking about the display, it is the new 3rd generation Cicada Wing flexible panel. It has a smaller crease, bend radius, and 50% increased brightness plus better colors & viewing angle. The display is a 7.8-inch AMOLED panel with a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Royole FlexPai 2 - 3rd gen Cicada Wing Flexible Display

But in the more cinematic 21:9 aspect ratio, the display has an effective screen size of 6.78-inches. Royole was particularly proud of this achievement since that makes the FlexPai 2 the flexible device with max viewing area among any foldable phones.

After all, the one thing making foldable phones interesting is the enlarged screen real-estate in a small form-factor.

Durability has always been a concern when it comes to foldable devices. Here, Royole says that the 3rd-gen Cicada Wing fully flexible display has undergone about 200,000+ bend test without any trouble.

5G, of course!

When it comes to performance, the Royole FlexPai 2 comes with the latest Snapdragon 865 chipset. It also supports 9 different global 5G network bands (n41/77/78/79/1/3/5/28/38) across China, North America, Europe, South-East Asia, and other regions of the world. Other performance-oriented features on the device include LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.0 storage. However, the exact number of those hasn’t been revealed.

In its unfolded state, we can also see the quad-camera setup on the left-hand side. Like the ones above, the cameras’ exact spec hasn’t been publicized either. The Royole FlexPai 2 also comes with true stereo dual speakers on the side and runs on the Water OS 2.0. That is the company’s custom skin on top of Android for better performance on flexible displays.

Royole FlexPai 2 - Folded

During the event held in Shenzhen, China, Royole also signed an agreement with telecommunication giant ZTE. With this, we’ll be seeing Royole’s third-gen Cicada Wing fully flexible display in upcoming terminal products from ZTE as well.

Royole FlexPai 2 Specifications:

Body **unknown**
Display 7.8-inches AMOLED panel; 3rd-gen Cicada Wing; 4:3 aspect ratio
Chipset Qualcomm Snapdragon 865; 7nm Mobile Platform
CPU Octa-core (1×2.84 GHz Kryo 585 & 3×2.42 GHz Kryo 585 & 4×1.8 GHz Kryo 585)
GPU Adreno 650
RAM LPDDR5 (exact size unknown)
Storage UFS 3.0 (exact size unknown)
Software & UI Water OS 2.0 on top of Android 10
Camera Quad-camera
Audio True Stereo Dual Speakers

Royole FlexPai 2 Pricing & Availability

As of now, we saw how the company hasn’t made so many details regarding the FlexPai 2 public. Therefore, there’s no official word regarding the phone’s pricing or availability yet. Yet, there are rumors that the Royole FlexPai 2 will be launching sometime in the second quarter of 2020.

Qualcomm-powered phones to get GPU driver update through Google Play Store

Last year, Qualcomm announced that it was working on some desktop-like features to include in the upcoming smartphones. The whole point of the idea was to improve the mobile gaming experience to make it more like desktop gaming. The first step in the mission was to introduce GPU driver update to smartphones and Qualcomm has finally made it possible with a collaboration with Google.

Smartphone GPU Driver Update

For better gaming experience you must have your driver updated frequently. Before this day, GPU driver updates had to be released bundled with the system update. With the recent announcement, these updates will be released via Google Play Store without having to bundle it with something else. This will make the process more efficient, faster and more practical than the traditional approach.

However, this feature isn’t for everyone. This feature will be available only for smartphones with the latest high-end Qualcomm chipset. Currently, it is only available for four devices running on Snapdragon 855 chipset – Samsung Galaxy S10, Samsung Galaxy Note 10, Google Pixel 4 and Google Pixel 4XL. Qualcomm is working to add devices running Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 765G will also be added to the list. Hopefully, we will see some gaming smartphones soon on that list.

Android GPU Inspector

The GPU driver update in smartphones is part of the Android GPU Inspector. Qualcomm and Google have worked together to develop this Inspector tool and they believe it will let Android game developers optimize their games even further for the better gaming experience. Game developers will have access to games render stage and GPU counter which they can use to optimize their games. It will ultimately help the GPU perform better without being too harsh on the battery.

As of now, Qualcomm will be distributing the beta release of the Android GPU Inspector to select developers and will welcome their feedbacks. The final version of the tool will be available for download from the Play Store.

Smartphone makers to opt for Snapdragon 765G instead of the flagship 865?

Price of flagship smartphones are already too high, imagine what a more expensive chipset will do to its cost. Qualcomm, in its bid to lead the 5G market, brought out the Snapdragon 865 SoC this year. Don’t get me wrong, it is a great chipset. It provides more power to your smartphones. However, the upgraded performance comes at a huge cost. And many smartphone companies, don’t believe that this trade-off is beneficial.

Now, Samsung has already launched its latest flagship, the S20 series with SD 865. Additionally, many Chinese smartphone makers like Xiaomi with Mi 10 Pro also used the SD 865. More were speculated to follow in. However, a conflicting report has now emerged regarding such news. Speculation is that Google and LG will not include this chipset in their latest devices. Rather, they will opt for a much cheaper alternative in the form of Snapdragon 765G.

snapdragon 865 qualcomm

A couple of Google devices had recently popped up in the Android Code repo. And XDA, after a thorough examination confirmed that the devices were supposedly the Pixel 4a and the Pixel 5 series. The major surprise for them was that none of these devices actually used the Snapdragon 865, and were in fact running on SD 765G. Reportedly, LG too will use the 765G in its upcoming LG G9 ThinQ. Recently, HMD launched the new Nokia 8.3, and that too had SD 765G.

Also read: How streaming platforms are preventing network congestion

So why are companies shying away from SD 865?

Well, the plain and simple answer to this question is cost. Yup, using the 865 chipset leads to increased cost for smartphone makers and ultimately the customers too. Qualcomm, with its SD 865 SoC, has made 5G mandatory for any smartphone wanting to opt for it. It does not have an on-board modem either. Rather, it has to be bundled with the X55 modem for 5G support.

This means that smartphone makers have to pay the cost of the modem in addition to the cost of the chipset. Not only that, to accommodate the SoC, they have to make the device bigger, which undoubtedly increases the cost.

Thus, this might be one of the reasons why Google and LG are seemingly opting for the less expensive 765G chipset instead of the flagship Snapdragon 865. It has an integrated 5G modem and thus comes packaged in a single chip. Now, it is a bit slower than the 865 but if heavy software optimization is done, it may not even be noticeable.

What are your thoughts about this, do comment down below!

Smartphone shipments decline amidst the COVID-19 outbreak

COVID-19 has affected almost all aspects of our lives. It has disrupted our daily routines and is forcing us to stay indoors all day. And suffice to say, all forms of business has taken a hit because of it. Just today, I read a news that said global smartphone shipment in Feb suffered the biggest ever drop. Number-wise the drop is 38% year-by-year. That was just in Feb, and only God knows what the data for this month will turn out to be.

Smartphone Shipments: Feb 2019 vs Feb 2020

In February last year, the reported number of smartphone shipments was 99.2 million units. And this year, the number of smartphone shipments stands at a mere 61.8 million due to the coronavirus outbreak. Now with more than half of the population staying safely inside their homes, it is expected that March will take a bigger hit than Feb.

smartphone sales decline

The initial drop in sales started when China went into lock-down. All the major smartphone companies had closed their factory there. Not only that, but sales in Asia also dropped because many people here were reluctant to visit stores amidst the corona fear.

Now, with the US and other major smartphone markets closed for the foreseeable future, the year-over-year drop in sales this month will be much bigger. Some factories in China have indeed started to resume smartphone production. However, I don’t believe people will rush to buy new smartphones. After all, taking into account the current situation, buying a smartphone would be the last thing a sane person would think of.

In fact, I believe this will be a tough quarter altogether for smartphone companies. Apple has closed all of its retail stores outside of China and AT&T has also closed 40% of its corporate-owned store. Even if the coronavirus outbreak were to calm down, it would take a considerable amount of time for the smartphone shipments to go back to normal.
