PCIe 6 specs already finalized: Will double the bandwidth of PCIe 5

0

Although PCIe 5 has just arrived with Intel’s 12th gen Alder Lake processors (AMD has also announced PCIe 5 support for the Ryzen 7000 series), the specifications for PCIe 6 have already been finalized.

PCIe 6 Overview:

PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) is a serial expansion bus standard that connects a computer to one or more peripheral devices. Because it has reduced latency and faster data transfer rates, PCIe is now the standard employed by computer makers.

The first generation of PCIe was launched in 2003. And now, the PCI Special Interest Group (PCI-SIG) has announced the completed specifications for the next-generation PCIe 6.

Twofold speed

PCIe 6 Speed

The new edition increases the bandwidth rates across all slots by a factor of two. The x1 connectors can transfer up to 4GB/s on PCIe 5 to 8GB/s on PCIe 6. Similarly, in full-duplex mode, the x16 slot has a maximum speed of 256GB/s. Furthermore, the raw data transfer speed has risen from 32GT/s (Giga Transfers per second) on PCIe 5.0 to 64GT/s on PCIe 6.0.

This boost in speed is due to the use of a new signaling method known as PAM4 (Pulse Amplitude Modulation with 4 levels). Not only does it deliver faster speeds, but it also allows for low-latency operation.

As you’d expect, it’s also backward compatible with all previous PCIe versions. This enables any current hardware that adheres to older requirements to function on PCIe 6.0 hosts.

PCIe 6: Availablity

As mentioned in the beginning, PCIe 5 components like SSDs are just beginning to get mainstream. Samsung and Adata have just teased their first PCI 5.0 SSDs, which are also aimed at enterprise customers. So there is plenty of time for PCIe 6 to enter the market.

Furthermore, while Intel’s 12th-generation desktop chips enable PCIe 5.0, its new mobile CPUs are limited to PCIe 4—a move designed to keep the costs down. Thus, the first PCIe 6 hardware is unlikely to be available for another 12 to 18 months.

Daraz Nepal appoints Aanchal Kunwar as its new Managing Director

Daraz is arguably the biggest fish in the e-commerce sector in Nepal today. Daraz Nepal has now announced the appointment of Aanchal Kunwar as its new Managing Director (MD). This latest recruitment decision is receiving a positive reception from the public.

Daraz Nepal appoints new Managing Director

The news of the change in the managerial role was confirmed by Bjarke Mikkelsen who founded the Daraz Group back in 2015. He is also acting as the current CEO of the group.

The appointment of Aanchal Kunwar as the MD of Daraz Nepal is significant in two ways. First, her recruitment as the country lead in a company as big as Daraz will serve as an example and inspiration for the younger female generation.

Secondly, with Aanchal Kunwar as Nepal’s lead, Daraz now has local people as the country’s lead in all of the five markets that it operates in. Before her, Daraz Nepal’s operation was looked after by Lino Ahlering, who had been in the role since the acquisition of Daraz by Alibaba Group in 2018. He is now taking over the role of Chief Customer Officer in Daraz Group.

Aanchal Kunwar will officially take over as the company’s new MD on January 17, the same day as Daraz’s rebranding. Hopefully, her appointment will bring more localized approach to Daraz’s operation in Nepal.

Who is Aanchal Kunwar?

Aanchal Kunwar has vast experience working overseas, including her 5-year stint at Amazon. In between 2018 and 2021, she was active under different product and program managerial roles in Amazon.

Prior to that, she served at Carlson Wagonlit Travel working as a product manager, business analyst, and consultant. She has an MBA degree in Strategy from the University of Minnesota.

Daraz Nepal will undoubtedly benefit from the 15 years of overseas experience of its new Managing Director.

About Daraz

We all know that Daraz is the most popular online marketplace in Nepal. It started as an online fashion marketplace in Pakistan in 2012. The Daraz Group was formed in 2015 to overlook the company’s operation across the border. Daraz came under China’s Alibaba Group for an undisclosed fund in 2018.

Likewise, Daraz entered the Nepali market in 2016 with its acquisition of Kaymu. Since then, it has had a prominent presence in the domestic e-commerce industry. The company recently recorded its biggest one-day sale—of Rs. 6 crores—under the Daraz 11.11 2021 campaign. Daraz Nepal is looking to reach new heights with Aanchal Kunwar as its Managing Director.

Since its split with Huawei, Honor has released a bunch of handsets with Google Mobile Services (GMS) onboard. Now, the company has entered the foldable arena with the launch of Honor Magic V. So, let’s go over the specifications, features, availability, and expected price of Honor Magic V in Nepal.

Honor Magic V Overview:

Design and Display

The Magic V sports a 6.45-inches exterior screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and 1000 nits of peak brightness. One of the main attractions of this device is that it features a 21.3:9 aspect ratio which provides a regular smartphone experience even when it’s folded.

Honor Magic V Design-Display

When unfolded, the Magic V greets you with a 7.9-inch flexible OLED screen that has a 90Hz refresh rate and 2272 x 1984 pixels resolution. The screen has a 10.3:9 aspect ratio which divides into two areas of close to 21:9 ratio. Likewise, it has HDR10+ support, 10-bit color depth, a peak brightness of 800nits. And it’s also the first foldable to receive IMAX Enhanced certification.

Moreover, the phone’s hinge folds like a water droplet, similar to what we saw with the Oppo Find N. As a result, it folds completely flat—with no gap between the two halves of the screen. Its hinge is made of aerospace-grade material and measures 14.3mm when folded and 6.7mm when unfolded—making it the thinnest foldable currently available. Also, the hinge is rated to survive 10 years if folded and unfolded 50 times a day.

Performance

Powering the Magic V is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1—making it the first foldable to debut with this chipset. This is accompanied by 12GB RAM and 256 or 512GB of storage option. For software, it comes pre-installed with the new Magic UI 6.0 based on Android 12. Similarly, it is fueled by a 4750mAh battery that supports 66W wired charging, which takes the phone from 0 to 50% in just 15 minutes.

Over the years, Acer has pretty much perfected its Predator Helios lineup of gaming laptops. Thanks to their bold design mixed with powerful hardware and an equally competent thermal solution, Helios 300 has been the go-to choice of many gamers. So when I had the 2021 edition of Acer Predator Helios 300 (PH315-54) in for review, my expectations were high. And for the most part, this laptop has managed to live up to its reputation just fine.

Acer Predator Helios 300 (2021) Review:

Design

  • 4.31W x 10.04D x 0.90H-inches, 2.3 kg
  • Plastic/metal hybrid build quality

Because this is a tried-and-tested design, Acer has been careful enough to not tamper with what works. As a result, the Helios 300 still features a familiar bold design with the glowing “Predator” logo at the back.

Unfortunately, there’s no way to completely shut it off—and it’ll instead get dimmer/brighter depending on the screen’s brightness level. This is complemented by non-illuminating blue stripes on the sides to let everyone around you know what you’re dealing with. The sharp-angled edges further establish the bold dominance of the Predator heritage.

Acer Predator Helios 300 2021 - Design

But things have changed in 2022. Few laptop makers had already adopted a relatively modern look on their 2021 lineup of gaming laptops and that commitment has only grown stronger this year. So, coming from someone who’s absolutely adored the subtle design of Lenovo’s Legion 5 Pro or the HP Omen 15, suffice it to say that I’m not a big fan of how the Helios 300 looks.

Plus, its wrist rest area is quite sharp as well. This hasn’t been bothersome at all when I’m wearing full-sleeved clothes in this weather, but I’m not sure about how it’ll fare during the summertime. Anyway, the metal body of the laptop—which includes the lid and the keyboard chassis—feels quite premium. At 2.3 kg, this is certainly not the most lightweight gaming laptop I’ve had in my backpack, but I’m not complaining.

Excellent I/O options

Its I/O selection is pretty decent too. There’s one ethernet, one 3.5mm headphone jack, and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A ports on the left—whereas the right frame hosts one DisplayPort and Power Delivery-compatible USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C / Thunderbolt 4 port.

Besides, you get one HDMI 2.1 connection that can output up to 4K/120Hz content (or even 8K/60Hz), one USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A, and one Mini DisplayPort 1.4. This USB-A port even supports power-off charging by the way—which means you can juice up your phone, tablet, smartwatch, or other USB-powered devices even when the laptop is in Sleep mode.

Display

  • 15.6″ anti-glare non-touch QHD IPS panel
  • 165Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 gamut

The Predator Helios 300 further continues to impress me with its display. It would’ve won me over completely if it was married to a 16:10 aspect ratio, but looks like we’re gonna have to wait till next year for that because even the new 2022 edition of this laptop incorporates the aging 16:9 screen.

At least the Predator branding on the bottom bezel is a lot subtle this time around, huh?

Specs-wise, you’re looking at a 15.6” display with a QHD resolution, 165Hz refresh rate, 3ms response time, and 100% DCI-P3 color coverage. And without a shred of doubt, this is the best screen on a gaming laptop in this price bracket.

Compared to the display on other gaming laptops in this arena, the Predator hunts down its prey rather easily. Fair to say, this can be a decent monitor for your professional video creation workloads as well. Our calibration tool measures this screen’s color gamut as follows:

  • 100% sRGB
  • 88% AdobeRGB
  • 99% DCI-P3
  • 85% NTSC

However, not everything’s sunshine and rainbows here. Complementing all these specs is its hilariously mediocre brightness level. 238.4 nits is more than enough for indoor usage—sure—but that’s simply not enough if you ever plan on taking this thing out in the sun.

Could be a QC issue

But if you don’t intend on using this laptop outdoors, it won’t matter as much. I’m not sure this is a quality control (QC) issue limited to a few units including ours because Acer clearly states 300 nits of peak brightness on this thing.

Acer Predator Helios 300 2021 - Display 2

Moving on, the viewing angles here isn’t that bad though—with minimal drop in brightness, saturation levels when looking at it from the sides. Unlike a few other gaming laptops I’ve tested recently, the Helios 300 isn’t subject or any major IPS glow/screen bleeding either.

Keyboard

  • Backlit full-size keys (with Numpad)
  • 4-zone RGB lighting (customizable)

On to the keyboard, the Predator Helios 300 has the same 4-zone RGB backlit keyboard as last year. These concave keys do take some getting used to if you’ve mostly used flat keys on a laptop, but that’s ok. Compared to other gaming laptops I’ve tested last year, Acer brings comparatively softer keys—and I kinda like them. More importantly, their silent sound profile is music to my ears. Heh.

Acer Predator Helios 300 2021 - Turbo Key

But what gamers—especially eSports gamers—will appreciate more is the 26-key rollover that prevents any possible ghosting issue during the gaming sessions. There’s also a dedicated Numpad section over on the right, which is slightly compact in size compared to the other full-sized keys.

It hosts the shortcut key to the “PredatorSense” app as well, where you can overclock the CPU/GPU, toggle between multiple performance/fan profiles, tune up the keyboard lighting, and more.

The dedicated Turbo key is a blessing

As you can see, the full-sized arrow (thank heavens) and the WASD keys share a see-through design to further establish the gaming aesthetics on the Helios 300. And I gotta talk about this “Turbo” key.

You can of course switch to the maximum performance mode through the aforementioned PredatorSense app, but come on—how cool is it to just hit one button and start your game without having to worry about fan speeds and such.

Trackpad

  • Plastic trackpad with integrated left/right keys

Regardless, this trackpad is just about okay. Or as the deputy chief engineer of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant would say “Not great, not terrible”. As expected, it’s plastic-made and features integrated left/right keys.

Acer Predator Helios 300 2021 - Keyboard

The click response is fine and multi-finger gestures work without any trouble either. And although a glass trackpad certainly would’ve been better, I didn’t notice any touch resistance here.

Audio

  • 2x 2W down-firing speakers
  • Supports DTS:X Ultra audio

Over on the audio, the Helios 300 has a typical set of down-firing stereo speakers. While it’s definitely not the worst I’ve heard on a gaming laptop, don’t expect much from this setup. It gets fairly loud enough for an average-sized room and there’s even the option of playing with different audio profiles.

Oh, I almost forgot—in case people around you don’t recognize that this is a gaming laptop, Acer has made sure to remind them of the fact with the distinct start-up sound. Thankfully, you can disable it pretty easily under the PredatorSense app.

Webcam

  • 720p HD camera
  • No privacy shutter

AcerPredatorHelios 300 2021 - Webcam

For all your video calling needs, you’ll find a standard 720p HD camera housed inside the top bezel alongside the array microphones. I guess it’s alright for casual video calls and such.

Performance

  • Intel Core i7-11800H CPU (45W TDP)
  • NVIDIA RTX 3060 105W (discrete GPU)
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB PCIe NVMe SSD

Getting to the performance side of things, this gaming laptop has been configured with Intel’s Core i7-11800H CPU and either RTX 3050 Ti, 3060, or 3070 GPU from NVIDIA. Our review unit of the Acer Predator Helios 300 packs RTX 3060 with 6GB GDDR6 VRAM and 105W TGP.

This specific model is currently available in Nepal for Rs. 217,000—down from Rs. 230,000. Likewise, it costs INR 121,000 in India, and about USD 1,300 in the US. But given the fact that its 2022 edition with Intel’s new 12th Gen processor has already been announced, this Helios 300 should undergo some major price-cuts in the coming days—especially in the international market.

PCIe 4.0 SSD baby!

On the memory front, you have 8GB of DDR4 RAM and a terabyte of M.2 NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD. Since this is a gaming laptop, neither of the memory modules are soldered onto the motherboard here. Therefore, you can access the two M.2 and two SO-DIMM slots for memory upgrades if necessary. There’s even a 2.5″ SATA slot to install an HDD or SSD.

the read/write speed of the pre-installed PCIe 4.0 SSD is some of the fastest I’ve ever seen.

Anyway, 8GB RAM is simply not enough for a high-end gaming laptop like this—and that was evident from my overall experience with the Helios 300.

  • Time taken lower is better

My daily chores consist of browsing the web with a bunch of Chrome tabs opened at once, besides editing documents on LibreOffice Writer, listening to some tunes on Spotify, and even editing light photos on Photoshop every now and then.

Acer Predator Helios 300 2021 - PredatoSense

Under this, the laptop would occasionally fail to keep all the Chrome tabs in memory even when turning on the Turbo mode. This is best visualized on CPU-intensive games like CS: GO, where the Helios 300 is noticeably behind, compared to the MSI Katana GF66 with the same Intel CPU, but 16GB RAM.

Gaming experience

To compare, the latter hits 240-260fps on average at the game’s highest graphics settings, which is about 30% higher than the Predator. I’m talking about 1080p gaming here, by the way.

On the other hand, GPU-intensive games take quite a toll on this laptop. Cyberpunk 2077 starts off at a decent 28-30fps under High texture quality and Ultra ray tracing, but it quickly drops down to about 20-24fps after mere 10-15 minutes into the game.

1080p Gaming Benchmarks
Turbo Performance mode, Power plugged in
Game Settings Average FPS
Cyberpunk 2077 Texture quality: High 20-24fps
Ray Tracing: Ultra
Texture quality: Medium 35-40fps
Ray Tracing: Medium
Control Texture resolution: Ultra 39-45fps
Ray Tracing: High
GTA V Texture Quality: Very High 89-95fps
Reflection Quality: Ultra
CS: GO Texture Detail: High 190-200fps
Anti-Aliasing: 8X MSAA
FIFA 22 Rendering Quality: Ultra 177-185fps
Anti-Aliasing: 4X MSAA

But dialing it down to Medium, one can expect a respectable 35-40fps on average. Similarly, Control is well playable at its highest settings here, giving off 39-45fps, whereas GTA V posts 89-95fps on average. By the way, I tested all the games with the Turbo mode turned on and kept DLSS and VSync off wherever available. So, you’ll get even better results when turning on DLSS on games like Cyberpunk 2077 and Control.

Commendable CPU performance

By now, we’re pretty familiar with the excellent single-core performance of Intel’s 11th Gen processors. And the i7-11800H is an excellent example. Moving on, managing all the heat are a couple of Acer’s 5th Gen Aeroblade 3D fans, three heat pipes, air exhaust vents on the sides and the back, and the intake vent on the bottom.

Acer Predator Helios 300 2021 - Exhaust

At its highest, I noticed the CPU and GPU temperature on the Helios 300 to be around 81 and 75°C, respectively. After more than an hour of continuous gaming, the WASD key area remains relatively cooler than the rest of the keyboard chassis.

But come summer season, the rise in the average ambient temperature should result in slightly worse thermal performance for this laptop. Almost forgot—switching to the Turbo mode blasts the fans to their highest speed, which means louder fan noise. So you’ll definitely want to put on a decent pair of headphones for the best gaming experience on this laptop.

Battery

  • 59 Watt-hour 4-cell battery
  • 230W AC power adapter

In terms of battery, Acer has been confident enough to ship the same 59Wh battery on the 2021 edition of Helios 300 like its predecessor. And that’s incredibly misplaced confidence if you ask me! At a time when 70-80Wh batteries are getting common on gaming laptops, this is honestly really underwhelming.

AcerPredatorHelios 300 2021 - Charger

With brightness set to around 50%—on top of Default performance mode and Auto fan control—this laptop lasted me about 3-4 hours only under lightweight usage. Fueling it up is a 230W AC power adapter that takes about 2 hours to fill up the battery.

Acer Predator Helios 300 (2021) Review: Conclusion

So there you have it, our review of the Acer Predator Helios 300 (2021). Based on everything I’ve discussed so far, you might have already guessed that I’m pretty fond of this gaming laptop. It features a solid build quality and an almost-excellent display—barring the brightness level of course.

Apart from this, the Helios 300 delivers an equally impressive gaming performance, backed by an effective cooling solution. It’s just that the bold visual flair of the Predator lineup feels unapologetically classic as we head on to 2022.

Acer Predator Helios 300 2021 - Display 1

And maybe Acer could’ve given an AMD option as well considering all the strides team red had made with its Ryzen 5000 series mobile processors. Unfortunately, even the 2022 iteration of Helios 300 laptops favor Intel CPU—although that doesn’t necessarily feel like a bad thing this time considering how Alder Lake looks superior to AMD’s Zen 3+ based Rembrandt CPUs. But only time will tell just how much of that is true.

Acer Predator Helios 300 (2021) Review: Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Nice, sturdy build quality
  • QHD display with excellent colors
  • Terrific connectivity options
  • Decent keyboard feedback
  • Great 1080p gaming performance
  • A fairly effective cooling solution

Cons:

  • The flamboyant design feels dated
  • Not the brightest display
  • Mediocre audio, webcam quality
  • Battery life could’ve been better

Future Xiaomi phones might feature an all-screen fingerprint scanner

0

Though they are the go-to tools for biometrics in premium Android phones, in-display fingerprint scanners do have their limitation. For instance, the limited scanning area has been a major problem for users, although this might not be a problem in the future. Xiaomi has patented a new technology that allows the entire screen to accept fingerprint requests. In this article, we will be discussing Xiaomi all-screen fingerprint scanner along with its working mechanism.

How does an in-display fingerprint scanner work?

Before we begin, let’s learn how mainstream in-display fingerprint scanners actually work. Current smartphones have either optical or ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensors. The optical ones capture a 2D image of your fingerprint using the reflected lights from your phone’s display. Then, it will compare the data with the one in the database to find a match.

Now, as far as the ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensors are concerned, they use ultrasonic sound waves to map a 3D image of your fingerprint. When you place your finger to unlock the device, ultrasonic waves are projected from the phone’s surface to take in the input.

In theory, ultrasonic fingerprint sensors are better than optical ones. That’s primarily because it captures a 3D image of the fingerprint.

Xiaomi All-Screen Fingerprint Scanner

Xiaomi’s latest patent was first discovered by IT Home, which reported that the company was awarded the patent on January 4.

The patent also reveals the working principle of Xiaomi’s vision of an all-screen fingerprint scanner. The setup consists of a matrix of infrared LED between the capacitive touch-screen and the AMOLED panel. Above this layer will be another layer of infrared receivers.

Xiaomi All-screen Fingerprint Scanner Patent

Whenever a user touches the screen for biometrics, the touch is registered by the capacitive touch layer, which also evaluates the position and shape of the fingerprint. The infrared transmitters use this data to throw light accurately at the area of contact between the screen and the user’s finger. To make the process more efficient, only the LEDs just below the area will light up.

The emitted light will then travel towards the screen, where it will bounce off the fingertip. It will then be received by the infrared receivers where the fingerprint data on the reflected light is compared against the known data. The phone will unlock only if there is a match.

Xiaomi is not the first, though

Back in August 2020, Huawei patented a similar technology for use in select regions like Europe, the US, India, South Korea, China, and Japan. However, the company is yet to commercialize it on a smartphone. Even Vivo showcased the tech in its Apex 2019 concept phone in 2019.

However, the tech is yet to be available on the commercial market. And Xiaomi still has a chance to be the first brand to launch a smartphone with an all-screen fingerprint scanner.

No Netflix?

It’s official: Sony will launch the world’s first QD-OLED TV

LG and Sony are the behemoths that dominate the OLED TV industry. Alongside LG, Sony has also announced its 2022 TV lineup which includes QD-OLED and a bunch of 4K and 8K TVs.

Sony 2022 TV Lineup Overview:

QD-OLEDs

QD-OLED was pioneered by Samsung Display, and Sony is using Samsung-made panels for its QD-OLED TVs. Unlike your typical OLED panels that use WRGB (White, Red, Green, Blue) compounds to boost the brightness of RGB pixels, QD-OLEDs use quantum dots to filter blue OLED light into red and green for better light efficiency. While Samsung has announced its own QD-OLED TVs as well, Sony will be first to market.

What is QD-OLED?

The “QD” prefix in the name refers to Quantum Dots, which are expected to improve the brightness of OLED panels. Thus, with QD-OLED, you will still have infinite contrast and pitch blacks of OLED panel alongside higher brightness levels, which will produce more vibrant colors—especially on HDR contents.

Sony QD-OLED TV

Sony will release QD-OLED TVs as a part of its A95K series. It will be outfitted with a heat diffusion layer, which contributes to uniform heat distribution. Furthermore, it will be powered by an improved XR processor with the “Depth Control” feature to improve the three-dimensionality of images. It will also have a “Flexible Color Contrast Control” feature which will intelligently increase the vibrancy of colors.

The A95K also has a camera—called the Bravia Cam—that magnetically attaches to the top edge of the TV and can be used for video calls. It will be further utilized for gesture control and automated sound optimization based on your sitting location.

Similarly, you can configure an alert to appear on the screen if the camera detects that someone is sitting too near to the television. Besides this, the TV will have different gaming features such as 4K/120Hz, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and ALLM (Auto Low-Latency Mode).

Screen sizes

Sony QD-OLED TV DisplaySony’s A95K series will feature 65 and 55″ TVs. However, those who prefer a smaller form factor can opt for A90K’s 42 and 48” models. The A90K is a standard OLED TV, although it features almost all the other specifications of the A95K.

A80K, Z9K, X95K, and others

Moving on, Sony is replacing its premium A80J OLED TVs with a new lineup called A80K. The series will have 77, 65, and 55” OLED TVs that are said to have better contrast than their predecessor—thanks to the new “XR OLED Contrast Pro” feature. This will be powered by an XR processor and will bring an improved sound system as well.

Sony Bravia Z9K Display

Likewise, Sony will ship Z9K 8K TV as the successor to its popular Z9J 8K TVs. While the latter flaunts an LED panel, the new lineup will feature a Mini LED display which results in better contrast and a low halo effect. The Z9K will be available in 75 and 85″ options.

Moreover, there are X95K TVs that feature a Mini LED panel as well, while there are other LCD/LED models which will see some improvements over their predecessors.

Sony 2022 TV Lineup: Availability

As of now, there’s no word on when these TV will be debut in the market. However, we expect most of them to hit the shelves by Q2, 2022.
