Microsoft Surface Duo Video “surfaces” online before the official launch

When Microsoft held its “Surface Event” last October, it did it in style- bringing its biggest ever line-up of products. One of the products that made its way into the event was Microsoft Surface Duo. With the Surface Duo, Microsoft announced its return to the smartphone industry. In a world where smartphone companies are racing to get on top of the folding smartphone technology, Microsoft’s idea of a dual-screen phone did raise some eyebrows. Though there is still some time left for the official launch of the device, videos showcasing the device have already emerged on the internet.

Microsoft Surface Duo

The Microsoft Surface Duo follows in the footsteps of devices like ZTE Axon MLG G8X, and LG V50. It comes with dual-screen. Each of the screens measures 5.6-inch in diagonal length. A 360-degree hinge holds the two-screen in place. The thick gap between the two screens differentiates it from the trendy foldable phones. While a screen is used as a display, the other can be used as a keyboard or a game controller. Though Microsoft has already developed Windows 10X specifically for the foldable and dual-screen device, Surface Duo comes loaded with Android. However, Microsoft has tweaked Android to look like the Windows 10X. It is expected to launch at the end of 2020.

Microsoft Surface Duo Dual Screen Usage

Hands-on Video of Surface Duo

Microsoft Surface Duo’s first hands-on video has recently surfaced on the internet. In the video, a person is caught using the Surface Duo. The phone can be used in both portrait and landscape mode. Though the second screen is designed for functions different than that of the primary screen, you can, however, use both of the screens for a single app.  The video also reveals a front flash that was missing in the device showcased at the Surface Event. A report from Windows Central claims that the device could have a single camera instead of the regular rear and front camera setup. The same report claims that Microsoft has started distributing the product to its employees for feedback and that the Surface Duo could hit the market earlier than expected.

Microsoft Surface Duo Public Appearance

Rumored Specs and Launch Date

As of now, Microsoft has not dropped any official information about the specs of the Microsoft Surface Duo. The information about the device is so limited that we don’t even know the kind of display it has or their resolution. However, the device is rumored to come with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset and a specialized version of Android which Microsoft built working with Google. It will be launched during the Holiday period of 2020.

Samsung Galaxy Buds Plus launched in Nepal: Still no active noise cancellation!

0

Alongside the Galaxy S20 series and Z-flip, Samsung also announced the Samsung Galaxy Buds plus in an unpacked event back in Feb 2020. It is Samsung’s latest true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds and comes with significant upgrades over its predecessor. And Samsung Nepal has officially made the Galaxy Buds plus available in Nepal too. It is now available for purchase from Samsung retail shops all over Nepal for a very reasonable price.

Galaxy Buds Plus Overview

Speakers

The latest iteration of the Samsung Buds series comes with double the number of speakers as in the Samsung Galaxy Buds. This time Samsung has gone for a tweeter and woofer arrangement instead of a single driver in each of the buds. Tweeter will take care of the high notes while woofer will look after the bass. Alongside the bump in the number of speakers, Samsung has bumped the size of each speaker by nearly 40%. The company claims that it will not only deliver more and better sound. The buds have been tuned by AKG and it promises crystal clear sound.

Battery and Backup

Back in December 2019, there were reports claiming that the next Galaxy Buds in the lineup will come with a battery capacity of 300mAh in each of the buds. Though it didn’t turn out to be true, the battery in the Galaxy Buds Plus is certainly bigger than the Galaxy Buds. Each bud comes with an 85mAh battery compared to a 58mAh battery in its predecessor. It also has a 270mAh battery capacity packed in its charging case.

Samsung Galaxy Buds plus Announced, price features availability in Nepal

With those batteries, the company claims the Galaxy Buds Plus provides 11hours of playback time. The power case will add another 11 hours to that playback time. The Buds Plus supports both wireless charging and wireless power-sharing. You can get around an hour of playback time with just 3 minutes of quick charging.

Partnership with Spotify

This year, Samsung has partnered with Spotify to offer a more personalized playlist to the users. A simple long-press in Buds Plus can provide you a list of recommended songs based on your track history.

Optimized mics

The Galaxy Buds Plus comes with 3 mics versus the industry-standard two mics. We believe that this step was taken to overcome the issues in the Samsung Galaxy Buds. Many people complained about the call quality in the previous bud. However, with three mics, the Buds Plus is said to perform better even in the crowded surroundings.

Ambient Sound

Samsung also claims to have enhanced the Ambient Sound feature. While the Ambient Sound mode in the Galaxy Buds looked good in paper, we didn’t find it of any use in our review. However, with the latest Galaxy Buds plus, Samsung claims you can have better control of what you want to hear. Despite this, there’s still no Active Noise Cancellation on the Galaxy Buds plus.

Samsung Galaxy Buds plus Charging Case

Better Connectivity

The Samsung Galaxy Buds plus offers better convenient device pairing and device switching. You can completely avoid the whole process of unpairing and paring; all you have to do is tap on the Media Player. The Buds plus is also compatible with iOS devices.

OPPO Reno 3 Vitality Edition goes official with Snapdragon 765

0

OPPO started off the Reno 3 series at the end of last year by launching OPPO Reno 3 and OPPO Reno 3 Pro. The highlights of these phones were the support for 5G that they came with. It’s February now and OPPO has decided to add one more device to the Reno 3 series. The latest OPPO Reno 3 Vitality Edition is basically the Reno 3 5G but with some modifications in the specs.

Oppo Reno 3 Vitality Edition

Design and Display

Design-wise there isn’t much to choose between the Reno 3 and the Reno 3 Vitality edition. The Oppo Reno 3 Vitality Edition comes with a 6.4-inch AMOLED Panel. It comes with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels and an aspect ratio of 20:9. The display features a waterdrop notch to accommodate the 32MP selfie camera. There is Corning Gorilla Glass 5 both on the front and rear end of the device.

Dimensity 1000L vs SD 765

We can know the difference between the two devices when we look at the specs sheets.  While the original OPPO Reno 3 came with MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000L, the Reno 3 Vitality Edition packs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765 chipset. Both are 5G ready chipset targetted at the mid-range smartphone segment. We can’t think of any reason for switching to SD 765 as both the chipset offer similar performance in real-life usage.

Check out our comparison between SD 765G and Dimensity 1000L

Differences in the Camera

OPPO Reno 3 Vitality Edition Cameras

Another noticeable difference is in the camera. Though the Reno 3 Vitality Edition features a quad-camera setup as in the Reno 3, the former comes with a 48MP primary camera against the 64MP primary camera of the latter. The other sensors have been left unchanged. The Vitality edition features the same 8MP ultrawide sensor, 2MP Black and White sensor, and 2MP depth sensor.

Check out launch date for Mi 10 series

Configurations and Color Options

While the Reno 3 came in two configurations 8GB/128GB and 12/128GB, the Vitality Edition only comes in 8GB/12GB memory configuration. Though the design remains unchanged in the Vitality Editon, it does come with different color options. You can choose between Moonlight Black, Sky Mirror White, and Streamer Gold.

Other Features

The rest of the features of the new edition is identical to the original Reno 3. Both come with an optical fingerprint scanner mounted under the display. Both come with a 4,025mAH battery which supports VOOC 4.0 quick charging technology.

OPPO Reno 3 Vitality Edition Specifications

  • Display: 6.5″ AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution (1080 x 2400 pixels)
  • Rear Camera: Quad, 48MP primary lens with f/1.7 aperture + 2MP depth sensor with f/2.4 aperture + 8MP Ultra-wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture + 2MP monochrome lens with f/2.4 aperture
  • Front Camera: 32MP lens with f/2.4 aperture
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 765
  • GPU: Adreno 620
  • Storage: 8GB/128 GB

  • Battery: 4,025mAh with VOOC Flash Charge 4.0 support
  • Sensors: Fingerprint (in-display), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass

Price and Availability

As of now, Oppo Reno 3 Vitality Edition is available for pre-orders in China. After the pre-order is over, the phone will go on sale from the 14th of February. It is priced at around 3,000 Yuan (~NRP 49,100).

DTH service provider DishHome steps up for satellite internet service

0

Needless to say- the internet has become our necessity. There are a lot of service providers to fulfill your networking needs. Well, almost all of them use the same technology to distribute the internet but under different names. However, we are finally going to witness something that has never seen in Nepal-commercial internet service through satellite. Nepal Telecommunication Authority has provided DishHome with an ISP (Internet Service Provider) license. With this license, DishHome now has permission to provide internet service through fiber-optics and satellite.

DishHome: An Introduction

DishHome is Nepal’s first DTH (Direct to Home) based TV service provider. Since its launch in 2009, it has been a pioneer in the field of digital broadcasting in Nepal. Though its popularity in the urban areas is overshadowed by emerging IPTV technology, it is still the king in the rural areas cut-off from the cable-world. After the success in the TV service business, DishHome is set to conquer the internet business too.

Though DishHome has just been granted the license to operate as an ISP, it has been evaluating the feasibility of satellite-based internet service for more than a year. It looks like they are finally able to implement their plans. They will be using the Fiber-optics in the urban areas whereas the rural areas will be connected via VSAT technology.

dish-home

Check out the price of Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Lite in Nepal

VSAT: The Technology Involved

VSAT stands for Very Small Aperture Terminal. Simply, it is a satellite-based communication system in which the end-user receives and sends signal information to and from a satellite. DishHome is using this technology for its TV service. Though it is comparatively expensive than cable TV, it can reach places which the cables cannot. And internet-based on VSAT isn’t a new thing in Nepal. In fact, a few corporations in Nepal have been using it for office purposes. However, DishHome is now trying to commercialize this technology and make the internet available to every place.

Nepal doesn’t have any commercial satellites so DishHome uses satellite from an Israeli Satellite Company named Spacecom. DishHome looks to collaborate with the same company for satellite-based Internet service.

Check out the generator that generates electricity from a drop of water

DishHome Internet Service – The Roadbumps

While the idea of connecting rural areas with the internet looks exciting and promising, it is not going to be easy. VSAT technology is not cheap. It has been reported that DishHome will initially be investing NPR 30,000,000 for the project. However, the cost can be expected to go up even more. So, VSAT based internet isn’t going to be cheap. It becomes a major problem when targetted customers are from rural areas.

Another problem is the pricing. The company will be providing internet via fiber-optics and VSAT. The company will have to come with two different pricing schemes based on the area and the technology involved. It will be interesting to see how the company implements that without hurting the sentiments of any set of customers. Will they operate under different names in different regions. Who knows? But it looks like the safest way to move ahead.

So what do you think of the news? Do you see DishHome succeeding as an ISP? Share your opinions.

Accurate launches HX03 True Wireless Earphones: A worthy competitor to Redmi Airdots?

0

When we go out to stores to buy any accessories we all face the problem of affordability and authenticity. We don’t even have a wide range of options to choose from. Most of the products which we want don’t land officially in Nepal so getting hands-on them is quite difficult. Even if they do, they come with hefty price tags. So to remove those complications, Accurate launched itself into the Nepalese market with power banks, fast chargers, and data cables. Recently, they have launched the Accurate TWS HX03 True Wireless Earphones for those who want a decent wireless experience without having to break the bank.

Also, check out Xiaomi Mi 10 & Mi 10 Pro launch date

Accurate TWS HX03 True Wireless Earphones

Accurate TWS HX03 is the company’s first truly wireless earphones. During its initial launch, the company had brought earphones, neckbands, and Bluetooth headset. The wireless earphones come with Bluetooth v5.0 and a response frequency between 20Hz and 18.5kHz. Each earphone comes with a 12mm speaker with 32 Ohm impedance.  Accurate claims the TWS HX03 has a signal-to-noise-ratio of at least 70db which theoretically means at a given time the noise from the earphones will be 70db quieter than the music it is playing.

Accurate TWS HX03 Earphones with Power Case

Even if you have great sounding earphones it won’t mean much if you can’t use it all the time. So, Accurate has included a 40mAh lithium battery in each earphone. Accurate claims 4.5 hours of playback time and 3.5 hours of talk time. Similarly, the power case comes with a 420mAh battery capacity. And when the charge of the power case runs low you can charge it with the Type-C cable included in the box. The power case measures only 49 x 23 x 59.2mm in dimension. So, you will have no problem carrying it around your pocket.

That’s not all. If in case you are concerned with the durability of the product-as with most of the accessories available in Nepal, Accurate has got your back on this one. The HX03 comes with 6 months warranty which is commendable given its price.

Accurate TWS HX03 Design

Also, read our Redmi Airdots review!

Accurate Specifications:

  • Earphone Speaker Dimension: 13mm, 32 Ohm
  • Connectivity: Wireless (Bluetooth)
  • Music Time: 4.5hours
  • Battery capacity: 40mAh (Each Earbud); 420mAh (Power case)
  • Bluetooth Version: V5.0
  • Talk Time: 3.5hours
  • Power Case Dimension: 49x 23x 59.2mm
  • Power Case Charger: Type-C (5V, 1A)

Accurate HX03 TWS Price And Alternatives

Accurate has launched the TWS HX03 at NPR. 3,199 which is quite reasonable considering the specification of the wireless earphones. It will be competing against the likes of Xiaomi’s Redmi Airdots which is available at NPR. 2,500 at Meroyeti.com.

However, if we compare the specs, the difference between the two is very slim and the Redmi Airdots isn’t covered by any type of warranty. But when we talk about earphones, specs don’t really reveal about the experience we can expect. So we suggest waiting for our review of the HX03 before you spend your money on it. Also, Accurate is offering free shipping up to February 14, so can save some money on that as well.

CG Telecom yet to receive a unified license from Nepal Government

0

When Jio launched in India, it was nothing sort of a revolution. Free calls, free data, and whatnots. It well and truly was a source of envy for most people. And here in Nepal where data and call prices are among the most expensive in the world, why is there so much government intervention when something similar was about to happen in Nepal? I know there are “packs” be it data or voice calls you can take from the current network providers. However, it still remains expensive. Thus, it’s baffling to see that our government has denied CG Telecom permission to commence their telecom services by not providing a unified license.

Words from the CEO, Mr. Binod Chaudhary

Binod Chaudhary, in an interview, claimed that if his company was given the permission to start their telecom services, people will be able to enjoy free voice calls and data prices at half of the current price. However, despite having already paid the required amount and fulfilled their due diligence, they have not been given the green light for three years now.

Reportedly, CG is ready to invest almost Rs. 25 billion in telecommunications. However, due to an issue of the unified license, they have not been able to do so.

In a recent press release by the Minister of Communication and Information technology of Nepal Mr. Gokul Baskota, he claimed that Chaudhary Group had not begun the process of acquiring the unified license. And it requires a company to pay Rs. 20 billion. Moreover, he also mentioned that he cannot comprehend how a company can provide free voice call to all the users.

CG Telecom – The road to a unified license

I agree that everyone has to play by the rules. However, the issue here is that CG claims that the mentioned amount has to be paid within 10 years of the license commencement. Indeed according to the “Telecommunications Code (Dur Sanchaar Ain)”, any company seeking a unified license has to pay the aforementioned Rs. 20 billion for the license. However, the payment can be made in the following way:

  •  Rs. 50 million in the first year and the second year
  •  Rs. 100 million in the third year
  •  Rs. 200 million in the fourth year and so on

Still, the Minister claims that the complete amount has to be paid in advance. Therefore, Chaudhary Group themselves via a press release sought justification regarding this situation.

Moreover, CG communication has said that they have already paid Rs 4,49,457,723 until now to the government for licensing purposes. So, once again the question remains why so much blockade for private investors? Especially, in the telecommunication industry.

CG has time and again come out and expressed their desire to invest heavily in this sector. Promised to provide services based on new technologies. And help the country achieve its goal of making digital Nepal.

Is it just because of the rules or is it a part of a much more elaborate plot? Should CG Telecom be rewarded with a unified license? Do comment your opinion!

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip goes official: The better Motorola razr!

The last time Samsung came up with a “revolutionary” foldable phone, it was a disaster. With buyers mistaking the protective layer for a screen protector, the horrors started as soon as the product reached the public. However, the company recalled all the units and took its time to amend the design errors of the Galaxy Fold before reshipping it again. And now, Samsung has come up with a new foldable phone – this time with a clamshell design. Dubbed the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip, it shares a similar design language to the recently launched Motorola razr, but with objectively better quality.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Overview

Design & Display

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip comes in a radically different design than the earlier foldable phone from the company. With its clamshell design which folds in half to a mere 3.4-inches body, the phone is a direct competitor to the Motorola razr that launched a couple of months ago. In its folded state, the phone gains a width of 0.6-inch which is just about the width of two regular phones.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip unfolding

The lid has a 1.1-inches Super AMOLED “Cover Display”, where you can view the notification, messages, or even take selfies. And on its side resides the rear dual-cameras, which I’ll get into in more detail later on. Similarly, Samsung has installed a fingerprint sensor on the side of the phone.

But it’s when unfolding the Z Flip, its beauty shines through. Revealing a tall 6.7-inches FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED display, the Galaxy Z Flip almost guarantees a unique smartphone experience. And you know what’s exciting and simultaneously reassuring, this foldable screen is made of “glass”. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, the days of plastic screens on foldables are over. Samsung’s Ultra-Thin-Glass (UTG) paired with a hideaway hinge on the Galaxy Z Flip as the company claims, can survive up to 200,000 unfolds!

And to protect from potential dirt and dust from getting into the phone via the hinge, there’s a small “sweep protect” technology. But only a real-world test will prove its worth.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip Flex Mode

There’s also a “Flex mode” which allows you to use the Galaxy Z Flip kinda like a laptop. With some apps like the camera supporting it, you get a separate screen space for the main UI while the bottom half of the display consumes the settings and whatnots. Reminded me of the ASUS ZenBook Pro Duo, not gonna lie.

Cameras

For such an animated product, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip comes with a good-enough camera setup as well. On the lid of the phone, there are two 12MP cameras; a primary and an ultra-wide sensor. The primary sensor supports OIS, while the ultra-wide lens has a 123º field-of-view (FOV). Features like 8X digital zoom, Tracking AF (Auto Focus), also make their presence on this device.

There’s an additional 10MP selfie camera under a tiny punch-hole cutout, making the Galaxy Z Flip the first foldable phone with one. Samsung’s native camera app makes use of the aforementioned Flex Mode.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip rear cameras

In terms of video, the rear cameras can shoot up to 4K videos @ 60fps. Additionally, it also supports 960fps super slow-mo at HD resolution, 240fps slow-mo at 1080p and FHD Hyperlapse videos. Honestly, I’m amazed at Samsung for being able to cram all these into a device with a radically new design approach.

Performance & Memory

The Galaxy Z Flip is a powerhouse in terms of performance as well. It is powered by last year’s most powerful chipset – the Snapdragon 855+. The Motorola razr came with a disappointing Snapdragon 710 SoC, which was one of the most significant disappointments for an otherwise okay-ish device. As a result, you don’t sacrifice the performance level for the sake of a new design.

Moreover, the phone comes with a singular 8GB RAM and 256GB storage configuration. There’s no option for storage upgrade here, but that should be plenty for the majority of the buyers anyway. Complementing the faster chipset is the faster UFS 3.0 storage technology. The Galaxy Z Flip runs on the latest Android 10 with One UI 2.0 on top.

Battery

In terms of battery, the power necessities for the phone is handled by a 3300mAh cell. It’s not very big for a 2020 phone but isn’t downright abysmal either. To put it into perspective, Google Pixel 4 came with a 2800 mAh battery and relied upon software optimizations to give out good endurance.

More importantly, the Galaxy Z Flip isn’t mean to be used as a regular phone. With regular notifications, selfies, etc. handled within the small cover display, I believe the 3300mAh battery shouldn’t do all bad in terms of endurance.

iQOO 3 5G to land in India before anywhere else

0

Back in January, we first heard about Vivo’s plan to spin-off iQOO as an independent brand in India. Recent news suggests iQOO is working to launch a new device in India called the iQOO 3 5G. The fact that the device might be premiered in India before anywhere else will make it the company’s first-ever outside its home country of China.

iQOO 3 5G overview

Soon after the rumor of spin-off, another rumor about iQOO India launching the first Snapdragon 865 device in India followed. Gagan Arora, iQOO’s Director of Marketing, has confirmed both of the news. A post on Weibo by official iQOO account has confirmed that iQOO 3 5G is on progress. We believe that the iQOO 3 5G is the same device that will be launched in India.

Xiaomi confirms the launch date for its upcoming Mi 10 series

0

The Mobile World Congress is almost here. With the event date nearing closer, we can not help but think about the smartphones we are going to witness. Major brands will be bringing their latest flagship phones to the event. Talking about both flagship and launch, we, finally, have a date for the launch event of the anticipated Mi 10 series. According to the latest report, the Xiaomi Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro will initially be launched in China before it will officially available for the international market.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 in the Mi 10 series

Qualcomm announced its latest flagship processor Snapdragon 865 earlier this month. And even before we had the complete specs of the processor, many of the smartphone brands announced to integrate it into their next flagship phone. One such brand was Xiaomi. Company’s Co-Founder and Vice-Chairman, Bin Lin, announced at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2019 that the Mi 10 will be powered by the latest flagship processor.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Specs

Let’s start with what we already knew about the device – Snapdragon 865 processor. With this, we can almost be certain that the Mi 10 will be the first of many 5G smartphones that the company promised to launch this year. Qualcomm earlier clarified that the Snapdragon 865 will only come bundled with the X55 modem (for 5G connectivity) though it lacked an integrated modem. The Mi 10 will come with dual-mode 5G support. It will come with three different memory options – 8/128GB, 8/256GB, and 12/256GB.

Talking about the display, the Mi 10 will sport a 6.5-inch AMOLED panel. The display will come with the support of refresh rate up to 90Hz. While its predecessor, Mi 9, came with a notch to hold the selfie camera, we still don’t know if Xiaomi will give it continuity or will go with a punch-hole display instead.

The Mi 10 will house a quad-camera setup at the back. Sony IMX686 will be the primary sensor. In addition to this, there will be a 20MP ultra-wide sensor, a 12MP telephoto lens. We are yet to confirm if the device will come with a depth sensor or a macro sensor.

The phone will feature a 4,500 mAh battery. It will come equipped with a 40W fast charger. As per the rumors, the device will support 30W wireless fast charging and 10W reverse wireless charging. It will feature a linear vibration motor which provides faster acceleration than the widely used ERM motor.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro Specs

At the moment, information about the Xiaomi Mi 10 Pro is limited. We can confirm the Snapdragon 865 and dual-mode 5G. It will come with RAM of up to 16GB which will be based on the latest LPDDR5 technology.  It will come with the  5,250 mAh battery. There will support for both 66W fast charging and 40W wireless fast charging. There will also be support for reverse wireless charging, detail of which is still unknown.

The Pro version is said to come with a 6.4-inch 120Hz OLED screen. It will also feature a quad-camera setup. The primary camera will have a 108MP camera. There will be a 48MP ultra-wide sensor, a 12MP telephoto lens. It will also feature either a macro lens or a depth sensor. Being a Pro version, it will only ship with 12GB of RAM. For internal storage, we can choose from 128GB, 256GB, or a 512GB variant.

Xiaomi Mi 10 Official Launch

Xiaomi, via its official Weibo account, has confirmed that Mi 10 will be unveiled in China on February 13. Unlike other unveilings by the company, this one will be an online program as pubic gathering in China is quite impossible due to coronavirus outbreak.

As for the international launch, Xiaomi will be bringing the new Mi 10 series to Mobile World Congress 2020. Xiaomi has allegedly sent out invitations for the launch event that is taking place on February 23. Though the specs haven’t been confirmed officially, we believe that the devices won’t vary significantly in terms of specs.
