Instagram launches DM filter against hate speech and bullying

0

Instagram is one of the world’s largest social media platforms. And that accomplishment doesn’t come with its fair share of those who abuse the platform. As is well known, the company deals with accusations of hate speech and bullying, and they are regularly introducing new features to control it. Instagram has again devised a way to regulate it by filtering all messages that you believe are inappropriate. So, let’s take a closer look at the latest Instagram abusive DM filter functionality.

Instagram DM Filter Overview:

The new update is intended to protect users from abusive direct messages (DMs). Instagram will soon roll out the filters for DMs, which allows users to personalize their DMs by hiding abusive terms. Then, Instagram will hide all of these messages from the DMs of users.

Instagram also shared in a blog that they’ve worked with leading anti-discrimination and anti-bullying organizations to create a predefined list of derogatory words that will be filtered from DM requests when the feature is activated. The new DM request filter would work similarly to the existing comment filters.

Instagram permanent user block feature

The next step here is to permanently block the user. This makes it more difficult for someone to contact you again through a new account. If you wish to block someone on Instagram, then this feature allows you to preemptively block new accounts that an individual can create.

How does it work?

This feature will allow users to choose a list of words, phrases, or emojis that they want to filter out of DM requests. Instagram adds that the filtering of all messages is done on your own device. It ensures that no message material can be sent back to their servers. The content of a DM request isn’t shared till you report a specific account.

Instagram will begin rolling out the function in a few countries over the next few weeks, with plans to extend to more countries over the next few months. For those who want to use the function, go to Settings > Privacy > Hidden Words, after the service is available in your region.

Realme 8 5G announced with Dimensity 700, 90Hz LCD screen

0

Just a month after the launch of the Realme 8, the company has announced the 5G variant of the device. In this post, we will be taking a look at the specs, features, expected price, and availability of Realme 8 5G in Nepal.

Realme 8 5G Overview:

To note, Realme 8 5G is a rebrand of Realme V13 5G which was launched in China about a month ago. While the V13 has an 8MP selfie camera, this one brings a 16MP sensor instead.

Design and Display

The phone features a 6.5-inch FHD+ panel with support for a 90Hz refresh rate. Unfortunately, Realme has used an LCD panel here. Therefore, the fingerprint scanner has also been shifted from under the screen to the side. The display has a left-aligned circular cutout for the selfie camera. Realme also claims maximum brightness of up to 600 nits and a screen-to-body ratio of 90.5% on this phone.

Realme 8 5G Supersonic Blue

Realme 8 5G is 8.5mm thick and weighs around 185 grams. The rear panel is based on high-gloss indium plating which the company claims provides extra shine to it. Many will be glad to know that there is no “Dare To Leap” branding on the 5G variant. There are two colors to choose from here – Supersonic Blue and Supersonic Black.

Performance and Memory

Powering the Realme 8 5G is Dimensity 700 which features two Cortex-A76 cores (@ 2.2GHz) and six Cortex-A55 cores (@ 2.0GHz). It is based on TSMC’s 7nm process that makes it more energy-efficient than the Helio G95 on the 4G variant. It also supports 5G connectivity and hence boasts up to 2.77Gbps of peak download speed.

MediaTek Dimensity 700

The phone comes in two RAM variants – 4GB and 8GB. Both come with 128GB of UFS 2.1 internal storage. It can be expanded up to 1TB using an external microSD card. Realme has also introduced Dynamic RAM Expansion (DRE) technology that lets the phone use a certain portion of internal storage as RAM. With this, you can increase Realme 8 5G’s RAM to 5GB and 11GB depending upon the variant.

Camera

Coming to the camera, Realme has made a lot of compromises here. First, the primary camera has been downgraded to 48MP from 64MP on the 4G variant. Similarly, there is no ultrawide lens here. Instead, what you get is a macro sensor and a Black and White sensor. Plus, there is no 4K recording either. The highest you can go with the rear camera is 1080p/30 fps.

Realme 8 5G Camera Setup

On the front, there is a 16MP selfie camera enclosed within the punch-hole cutout. It also maxes out at 1080p/30fps video recording.

Rest of the specs

Realme 8 5G gets its juice from a 5,000mAh. The company claims that one can get up to 114 hours of music time on a full charge with this device. The charging speed has also been reduced from 30W on the 4G variant to just 18W here. The phone ships with Realme UI 2.0 based on Android 11 out-of-the-box.

Realme 8 5G Specifications:

  • Display: 6.5-inch LCD panel, 90.5% screen to body ratio, 90Hz refresh rate
  • Resolution: FHD+ (2400 x 1080 pixels), 405PPI
  • Chipset: MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G (7nm)
  • CPU: Octa-core (2x 2.2GHz Cortex-A76 + 6x 2.0GHz Cortex-A55)
  • GPU: Mali G57
  • Memory: 4/8 LPDDR4x RAM, 128GB UFS 2.1 storage (expandable)
  • Software & UI: Realme UI 2.0 on top of Android 11
  • Rear Camera: Triple – 48MP primary, 2MP BnW, 2MP Macro
  • Front Camera: 16MP (punch-hole)
  • Security: Fingerprint sensor (side-mounted)

Dish Home and Prabhu TV are in final talks towards a merger

0

If things go as planned, two of the leading digital TV service providers of Nepal will soon be working under a single brand. Executives of Dish Home and Prabhu TV are in talks with each other over the possible merger of the two companies.

Dish Home and Prabhu TV Plans for Merger

Dish Home is the first Direct-To-Home (DTH) TV service provider in the country. Similarly, Prabhu TV was the first to bring wireless terrestrial TV (DVB-T2) facility in Nepal. Both companies have expanded their service to include internet facilities as well. Dish Home is providing internet facilities to a limited region in the Kathmandu Valley under the Dish Home Fibernet name. Similarly, Prabhu TV has been offering internet service as well.

As per the report, the merger will allow the resulting company to provide TV and internet service under a single brand. Two companies share some common investors, promoters and thus the merger has been regarded as the way forward for the two companies.

TV service providers have been struggling to keep up with the major ISPs that bundle TV services with their internet plans. Similarly, people have also started to turn towards OTT platforms like Netflix which has affected their revenue over the years. Not to forget, TV operators have been complaining about the recently implemented Clean Feed policy too.

In such circumstances, it’s difficult for the companies to grow alone. That’s especially true for Prabhu TV which is relatively younger and has a narrower customer base than Dish Home. With the two companies going for a merger, there will be one less competitor in the market. The resulting company will have a wider customer base and more resources to compete against ISPs and other providers.

According to the sources, the talks of the merger have already advanced and now is in the final stage.

Apple finally unveils the long-awaited AirTag object tracker

1

Apple’s Tile alternative, the AirTag has been a long time coming. In fact, its design was leaked almost a year ago. Designed to let you track your everyday objects with ease, the AirTag joins the likes of Samsung’s SmartTag. Allow me to discuss the Apple AirTag in more detail including its features, specs, expected price in Nepal, etc.

Apple AirTag Overview:

Design

The AirTag comes in a minimalistic circular design with stainless steel build and the Apple logo etched into it. And like other Apple accessories, you can really make it your own by engraving the AirTag with text (4 characters max) or the available emojis. It’s free, of course. Furthermore, it is IP67 dust and water-resistant as well so you don’t need to worry about getting it wet either.

Apple AirTag - Design

At just 11 grams, the AirTag is incredibly lightweight. In fact, it is lighter than Samsung’s SmartTag which weighs around 13 grams. As expected, this thing is battery-operated and takes a CR2032 coin cell battery. With everyday use, Apple says its battery can last over a year. Nice. And when needed, replacing it is quite simple too. Press it, twist it, release it. You can attact AirTag to a key ring, loops or if you feel like a daredevil, skip them all.

Tracking

Now let’s get to the more interesting stuff. The first step in using the AirTag includes setup which is as simple as bringing it close to your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. You can also name it depending on what object you’ve attached it to. It is embedded into Apple’s existing “Find My” network and you can view the status of your AirTag in the Find My app itself. It will show you the last known/current location of the device.

In case the lost/misplaced item is within the Bluetooth range, you can use the app to ring the AirTag or simply ask Siri to do so. This will trigger the AirTag to play a sound. On the contrary, when you’ve lost a device that’s particularly far away, the Find My network comes to the rescue.

Under this, the lost AirTag relays Bluetooth signals which are picked up by Apple devices in the network. And if you place your AirTag in “Lose Mode”, then you’ll also get a notification as soon as the device comes within your range or if it’s found in the Find My network.

Precision Finding

A good samaritan is also able to use their iPhone or other NFC-capable devices and tap the AirTag. This will then take them to a website that will display the owner’s contact number, provided that you’ve enabled it beforehand.

AirTag also uses Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology to enable a feature Apple calls “Precision Finding”. Unfortunately, this currently works only with the iPhone 11 and 12 series. As the name dictates, this feature is designed to give you the precise location of your AirTag-embedded object. According to Apple, it uses data from the camera, ARKit, accelerometer, and gyroscope to accurately guide you to the AirTag.

Privacy

Amidst all the location tracking, Apple ensures the utmost privacy and security built into the AirTag. Here, every data transfer in the Find My network is end-to-end encrypted, meaning even Apple won’t be aware of your device’s identity or location. You will also get an alert if someone else’s AirTag is within your vicinity. However, this action is only triggered if the original owner of the said AirTag has placed it in Lost Mode.

Apple AirTag Specifications:

  • Size and Weight: 1.26 x 0.31 inches, 11 grams
  • IP certification: IP67 dust and water-resistant
  • Connectivity: Bluetooth, U1 chip (Ultra Wideband), NFC
  • Battery: User-replaceable CR2032 coin cell battery
  • Others: Accelerometer, Built-in speaker
  • Compatibility: iPhone and iPod Touch with iOS 14.5 or later, iPad with iPadOS 14.5 or later

Apple AirTag Price in Nepal & Availability

It’s available in either a single pack or a pack of four that cost $29 and $99, respectively. A single Apple AirTag is available in Nepal at the price of NPR 5,500 through its official distributors, while a pack of four will charge you NPR 18,000.
