AMD’s Ryzen C7 Mobile SoC sounds too good to be true: Or does it?

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD)’s success story is one for the ages. A company that was once in the brink of bankruptcy, is now ruling the consumer-grade as well as workstation-grade CPUs with its new Ryzen, Threadripper, and EPYC lineup of processors. While its direct-competitor Intel is still playing catch-up with AMD, the company has successfully built a good rapport with its customers which will help its market dominance in the long-run. And a recent leak suggests that AMD will try to replicate that success in the smartphone chipset business as well. The chipset in question is the Ryzen C7 from AMD.

AMD Ryzen C7: The Beginning

Leaked by a Twitter user “HansDeVriesNL”, his submission to Slashleaks has since been removed for reasons unknown. We’re not off to a great start here as the integrity of the leak already seems feeble. And further grammatical errors on the images don’t help the case either. As pointed out by Ian Cutress from Anandtech, Arm hasn’t stylized its name in all-caps in some time, though the image clearly indicates otherwise. Furthermore, the leakster himself identified the misspell on the naming convention in the CPU Cores.

AMD Ryzen C7 Mobile SoC Leak

According to the image, Ryzen C7 has 2x Gaugin Pro and 2x Gaugin cores among others. However, it most likely is referring to Paul Gauguin – a French artist from the mid-1800s, further discrediting the leak in the process. Having said that, misspelling certain aspects are common and clever tactics to avoid any sort of NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) violation. So, with this little two-sided argument I’ve made, let’s take a closer look at what the Ryzen C7 SoC features – according to the leak.

A flagship SoC

Starting with the most obvious fact, the Ryzen C7 looks to be a flagship SoC, going head-to-head against the likes of Qualcomm, MediaTek, and others. In a time when every high-end chip right now is manufactured under the 7nm process, Ryzen C7 will use TSMC’s 5nm technology. Well, that is to be expected because every forthcoming flagship SoCs will be based on the same fabrication process. Anyway, this is a 64-bit processor with an octa-core CPU.

But the actual core setup is where it gets exciting. Featuring Arm’s relatively new “DynamiQ big.LITTLE” system, the AMD Ryzen C7 features 2x Gaugin_Pro Mobile, 2x Gaugin_Mobile, and 4x ARM Cortex-A55 cores. Here, the Gaugin_Pro is based on Arm’s Cortex-X1, and the standard Gaugin cores are based on Cortex-A78 cores. A78 is an expected upgrade over the current high-performance A77 cores. However, Cortex-X1 is a potentially ground-breaking feat of achievement; one that is poised to hold its crown against the best of Apple.

You see, despite using the Arm-based processor in its flagship chipsets in iPhones for the most time, Apple’s custom CPU microarchitecture has always managed to outperform the Cortex counterparts. That too by quite a margin. The standard A78 is an efficiency-focused CPU with about 20% improvement in sustained performance over its predecessor.

Arm’s new Cortex-X1!

On the other hand, the X1 is an entirely new design route from Arm which emphasizes entirely on the performance end of things – with a significant disregard for power and area. Or as Arm calls it “Performance-First Design”. The Cortex-X1 also falls under Arm’s new “Cortex-X Custom Program” where licensees can customize and differentiate over Arm’s “base” design.

Arm Cortex-X1 CPU architecture

The primary difference between X1 and A78 is performance. This is pulled off by physically increasing the core structure. In terms of benchmark scores, the Cortex-X1 delivers +30% and +22% integer performance over Cortex-A77 and A78 cores respectively. Similarly, it achieves 2x machine learning performance against the same A77 & A78 cores. But as I said earlier, it actively understates the other two aspects of the PPA (Power, Performance, Area) triangle. As a result, the performance-bump comes at a significant power usage, which is projected to be up to 2x of Cortex-A77/78.

Till now, Samsung has partnered up with Arm in its Cortex-X Custom Program while other customers are likely to make the announcement pretty soon. Seeing how Samsung abandoned its “Mongoose” custom CPU design in favor of staying competitive against Qualcomm, the partnership was not a surprise at all. From now on, the company will be licensing Arm’s CPU core design instead of just the IP (Intellectual Property), unlike Qualcomm.

And the leak suggests AMD is going the Qualcomm way here. Its 2x high-performance Gaugin_Pro Mobile Core (clocked at 3.00GHz) and 2x Gaugin_Mobile Core (clocked at 2.60GHz) are the slightly modified versions of their Cortex counterparts. So, we expect even better energy efficiency on these CPUs; provided the Ryzen C7 actually exists. Finally, AMD hasn’t fiddled with the remaining four CPUs being the ultra-high efficient Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 2.00GHz.

RDNA 2 Mobile GPU?

Moving to the graphics side of things, the Ryzen C7 is tipped to equip AMD Radeon RDNA 2 (Mobile) GPU microarchitecture with 4-core custom compute unit @700MHz. Yes, you read that right.

RDNA 2, not RDNA.

Ryzen C7 is starting to sound almost too good to be true now. We’ve yet to see RDNA 2 Radeon RX graphics for PCs and consoles hit the shelves and the news about AMD working on its mobile equivalent definitely raises some eyebrows.

AMD RDNA 2 GPU microarchitecture

Yet, the RDNA GPU technology had already made headlines in a different leak. It is supposed to feature on Samsung’s upcoming Exynos 1000 SoC substituting Arm’s Mali GPU. With this move, the Exynos 1000 reportedly brags nearly 3x better performance than Qualcomm’s latest Adreno 650 GPU in GFXBench’s Aztec Ruins (High) test. Regardless, the RDNA 2 Mobile on Ryzen C7 claims 45% faster performance than the Adreno 650.

Additionally (and this is quite the big one), this GPU will also go on to grab the title for the world’s first mobile GPU with “real-time hardware-accelerated ray tracing and variable rate shading”. In case you don’t know, ray tracing is a rendering technique to deliver realistic lighting effects in fields like gaming, CGI, animation, etc. Popularized by NVIDIA’s RTX lineup of graphics cards, real-time ray tracing has become one of the most sought-after features in recent GPUs. Though NVIDIA had also released a driver-based solution to enable ray tracing for its GTX 10 and 16 series of GPU, their hardware limitation simply couldn’t compete with the ones from RTX cards.

Ray Tracing on Smartphones

Though it’s exciting to hear that AMD’s Ryzen C7 may come with real-time ray tracing for smartphones, Huawei has already beaten it to the race; partly that is. In association with NetEase, Huawei’s homegrown Kirin 990 was able to produce a working demo of ray tracing on smartphones in a Chinese MMORPG game titled “Love is Justice”. Yes, it was just a proof-of-concept with framerate capped to prevent overheating; but an interesting development regardless.

Love is Justice - Ray tracing on vs off

Likewise, Variable Rate Shading (VRS) refers to a technique of allocating GPU’s compute power at varying rates when rendering an image. This is an effective way of reducing the load from the GPU by eliminating a consistent level of detail in certain parts of an image frame. But don’t worry, the difference is very minimal to the point where you may not even recognize it. With this, AMD Ryzen C7’s GPU is on its way to becoming the most powerful smartphone GPU too.

Moving on, AMD Ryzen C7 will also come with MediaTek’s 5G modem (most likely the Helio M70 found in MediaTek’s Dimensity lineup of chipsets). It will also come with Dual 5G SIM support. To cope with the eventual battery drain thanks to a uniform voltage supply for maintaining stable 5G connection, Ryzen C7 will also borrow MediaTek’s latest “5G UltraSave” feature.

Also Read: MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ 5G SoC announced

What it does is dynamically adjust the 5G modem’s power configuration and operating frequency, depending on the available network condition and what the user is doing. Oh, and because it likely is MediaTek’s M70 modem, the Ryzen C7 may not support mmWave of the 5G spectrum.

WiFi 6, 802.11ad, and 802.11ay

Memory-wise, the SoC will come with LPDDR5 RAM support (@2750MHz) and the latest UFS 3.1 storage protocol. On the display front, it supports panels of 2K resolution with 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ contrast, and 10-bit color depth. Other features of the chipset are pretty boilerplate, with support for Bluetooth 5.1, NFC, USB 3.1, GPS, NavIC, GLONASS, etc. But, the claimed WiFi standards for Ryzen C7 is where its legitimacy gets questioned once again. According to the image, it supports WiFi 6 (ax), 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, as well as 802.11ad and 802.11ay.

WiGig (Wireless Gigabit Alliance)

I completely understand if you hadn’t even heard about the last two before this. Frankly, I didn’t either. Turns out, it was something that existed since 2016 with the Letv’s Le Max Pro which supported the 802.11ad (WiGig) standard. Despite the popular 2.4 and 5GHz, a much powerful (and unlicensed) 60GHz WiFi band also exists. It enables high data transmission rates of up to 8Gbps with reduced congestion; though with a very narrow line of sight (aka shorter range). Some other (more popular) smartphones with 802.11ad WiFi include the ZenFone 4 and ROG Phone II from ASUS.

Similarly, 802.11ay is an increment over WiGig that delivers up to 4x bandwidth and increased range. The upcoming iPhone 12 is rumored to embrace 802.11ay (WiGig v2) technology. So, it seems the leak hasn’t gone overboard after all.

AMD Ryzen C7: Final Words

Overall, the AMD Ryzen C7 SoC is one ambitious chipset; provided that it’s real. The custom Gaugin, Gaugin Pro CPU cores, and RDNA 2 Mobile GPU are all but enough to blow a punch of disappointment. Add this to the fact that AMD hasn’t officially confirmed any single aspect of this leak. Yet, the company hasn’t disproven it either. I agree the Ryzen C7 sounds too good to be true and it may all just be some enthusiastic internet-dweller shaping his/her dream mobile chipset. But should this be an actual product, Qualcomm, MediaTek, and Samsung are going to have tough competition on their hands!

Facebook’s new “Manage Activity” feature lets you purge your old posts in bulk

Turns out, taking a quick look at your Facebook timeline over the years is a really effective way to reflect upon your life; see how you’ve grown and how far you’ve come. And the other way to analyze it is how it can also be an excellent reminder of things you may not necessarily be proud of now. Posts shared, statuses updated, etc. years ago most likely don’t define who you are now. While you could’ve always deleted them if you’d like, the tedious process of having to go through them individually was a turn off for many. However, Facebook has now rolled out a way to delete your account activity in a large quantity. Under the new “Manage Activity” feature, Facebook is, for the first time, letting your delete posts in bulk. Let’s find out more.

Facebook Manage Activity: Delete Posts in Bulk

In the early stage, Facebook is rolling out this feature only in the official mobile apps: Facebook (Android | iOS), and Facebook Lite (Android | iOS). Oh, and I was today years old when I found out that the Lite version of the app has a dedicated dark mode while the standard one lacks it. What?! Anyway, you can navigate to this feature in the following steps:

  1. Click the hamburger menu (the one with three parallel lines) on the top-right (or bottom-right in some regions) and select “Settings & Privacy“.
  2. From there, go to “Settings” and click the “Activity Log” option under the “Your Facebook Information” header. Or in the case of some users, the “Go to Activity Log” option may be visible in the user profile page itself.
  3. Here, you can see the “Manage Activity” tag at the top, alongside “Archive” and “Trash“.

Or, you can also redirect to the “Activity Log” from the profile settings option. This is that little box with three dots […] at the top of your profile page.

How does it work?

And this is where the magic happens! Using the “Filters” option, you can curate the category of your Facebook activity to list out; including a custom time range, or posts with specific people that you’ve created. Then, you just select the ones you wish to archive or send to trash.

Facebook Manage Activity - manage, filter, archive, trash posts

Here, the “Archive” option is like setting the privacy of the selected posts (and other activities) to “Only Me”. You can restore the posts to their original state from the archive if you feel like it too. This is different from “Trash“, which is where the deleted posts go. Items in trash stay put for up to 30 days, then they get permanently deleted. But of course, you can manually delete them permanently from the trash bin without having to wait a month for Facebook to do it for you. Additionally, you can also restore posts from trash, but you gotta do it before the 30-day limitation expires.

But since the update is fresh off the oven, there are many areas for improvement. The first and a surprisingly weird nuisance I observed was how selecting the posts, and navigating through the whole thing was smoother on Facebook Lite, compared to the standard Facebook app. Also, it would’ve been nice to be able to select items in a bulk as well. What I mean is: say I had a ton of posts I wished to delete of the same day. Yet, I have to go through them one by one and I can’t just select the day and be done with it. Let’s hope the company keeps working on it to make it much for efficient and simple to use.

Going forward

At the end of the day, this is clearly a positive step from Facebook (all things considered). Someone’s social media presence has inadvertently become a crucial factor in judging them; especially for their professional career. There have been numerous reports about people losing their existing job or a potential one because somehow their past activity on the web caught up to their present. So, the ability to perform a mass-deletion of your Facebook activities is a welcome update.

ColorOS 7 based on Android 10 arrives to OPPO smartphones in Nepal

Google released the first stable version of Android 10 back in September 2019. Nine months later, we are already waiting for its successor – Android 11. However, not everyone is lucky enough to have their phone run on the latest software. In most of the cases, smartphone brands put a layer of their custom UI on top of the vanilla Android. This makes it harder for such phones to receive software updates parallel to Google’s announcement of a new update. Such has been the case with OPPO’s ColorOS 7. The company has finally started rolling out the update to a wider range of the device. Read along to know if your OPPO phone will be getting the ColorOS 7 update.

ColorOS 7

The Unveiling

OPPO announced the latest iteration of its custom UI based on Android 10 in November 2019. In an event hosted in China, the company unveiled the latest version of ColorOS, giving insights on the new features and improvements over the existing features. OPPO Reno 3 became the first phone to receive the update, but not many phones have received it since then. The new features include the Soloop video editor, Focus Mode, Dark Mode, Art+ Wallpapers, and enhanced three finger-finger screenshot. OPPO has also worked on areas like performance, speed, and privacy protection to make the custom UI even better.

The Slow Roll-out

Up until now, ColorOS 7 is available in Find X series, Reno 10X Zoom, Reno 3, Reno 2, Reno 2F, R17 Pro, F11 Pro, and F11.

The company has clarified that the slow roll-out of the update is because of the strict quality requirements that the software department has to comply with. Through an official statement, OPPO has stated the update being rolled out has been refined using feedbacks from over 92,000 testers.

With the new roll-out, the number of OPPO devices to receive the update will be over 20. This roll-out is focused on bringing the latest software to popular devices under F and A series.

ColorOS 7 Rollout: Phase 1

Under this phase, half a dozen phones will be receiving the Android 10 update in June 2020. These phones include:

  1. F9
  2. F9 Pro
  3. F7
  4. F7 128G
  5. A5 2020
  6. A9 2020

ColorOS 7 Rollout: Phase 2

Under Phase 2, OPPO will bring the ColorOS 7 update to Oppo A91 in July. We might see the Oppo F15 receive the update around the same period as the two devices are the same device under different brandings.

Honor has pulled the curtain off its Play4 series of smartphones. The lineup consists of two smartphones; the standard Play4 and Play4 Pro. Here, we will be talking about the Honor Play4, its specs, features, price, and availability.

Honor Play4 Overview

Design and Specs

Honor Play4 comes with a big 6.81-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. The display features a tiny circular cutout on the top left corner that houses the front camera. The bezels on the three sides are slim while it is more profound on the bottom chin.

On the back, there is a rectangular module that encloses the quad-camera setup. The fingerprint sensor is shifted to the side of the device. There is nothing on the back except for the Honor branding.

Performance and Memory

Honor Play4 is powered by MediaTek Dimensity 800 SoC. The chipset comes with an integrated 5G modem. It looks to be the money-saving tactics from the company as the majority of 5G ready midrange phones feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765G which is a little expensive SoC than its MediaTek counterpart.

The graphic is handled by Mali-G57 GPU. To keep the device cool, Honor has included a vapor chamber technology. The phone is available in 6GB and 8GB RAM variants, both of which are paired with 128GB of storage. Users can expand the storage up to 512GB using a MicroSD card.

Honor Play4 Pro with an IR Temperature Sensor, Kirin 990 Chipset Launched

0

Honor smartphones are usually known for their premium design and feel. The brand has now released two new phones under the Play4 series. This time around it is not the design that takes the center place as a separate version of the Honor Play4 Pro also features a temperature sensor. Read along to know more about the specs, features, expected price in Nepal, and availability of Honor Play4 Pro.

Honor Play4 Pro Overview

Looking at the moniker of the Play4 & Play4 Pro, one may mistake the two as they look similar, with some variations in-between. But that is far from the case. Honor Play4 Pro looks to be a completely different device. The highlight of the phone is the inclusion of a temperature sensor.

Design and Display

As compared to 6.8-inch on Play 4, the Honor Play4 Pro sports a smaller LCD screen that measures 6.57-inch diagonally. The display features an FHD+ resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio and features a dual front camera setup housed inside a pill-shaped cutout.

Honor Play 4 Pro 5G design

On the back, the rectangular camera module remains the same, but now it only houses a dual-camera setup. It is offered in three color options – Magic Night Black, Iceland Illusion, and Mecha Blue. The latter steals the show with its gaming aesthetics.

Performance and Memory

Honor Play4 Pro 5G comes with HiSillicon Kirin 990 SoC. It is a flagship chip from Huawei’s in-house chipset manufacturer. The chipset is based on a 7nm FinFET Plus EUV node by TSMC. It has an integrated modem for 5G connectivity and is among the first chipset to do so. The chipset has a 16 core Mali-G76 GPU. For memory, the phone packs 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.0 internal storage.

Camera

Interestingly, Honor has gone with a dual-camera setup on this one. The brand has opted for quality over quantity. Most of the quad-camera setup these days include an incompetent macro and depth sensor to justify the setup. These two cameras don’t really add to the overall camera performance of the device and are more of a marketing gimmick.

Moving on to the camera on the Honor Play4 Pro, it has a 40MP Sony IMX600 sensor. The 1/17″ sensor features an RYYB filter that the company claims is able to capture 40% more information. It is also said to scale the ISO to up to 204,800 and it supports Huawei’s Artificial Image Stabilization technology.

The second camera lens is an 8MP telephoto lens that offers up to 3x optical zoom. It also supports OIS for better stabilization. On the front, there is a 32MP primary selfie camera accompanied by an 8MP ultra-wide sensor.

Battery, Temperature Sensor, and Others

Honor Play4 Pro features a 4,200mAh battery with 40W fast charging support. Huawei claims that it can charge the device up to 70% within 30 minutes of charging.

Honor Play 4 Pro 5G temperature sensor

There’s a special edition of the Honor Play4 Pro that has a dedicated IR temperature sensor, which can take the temperature of people, animals, and other objects. It can measure temperature in between -4º to 212º Fahrenheit (or -20º to 100º Celsius). Huawei claims that the sensor is accurate to the tenth of a degree. The feature could come handy in the current situation of COVID-19.

Honor Play4 Pro Specifications:

  • Body: 6.41 x 2.98 x 0.35 inches; 213 gm
  • Display: 6.57-inches IPS LCD panel

Samsung launches the Galaxy M21 in Nepal for a budget friendly price

Samsung Nepal has finally unveiled the successor to last year’s Samsung Galaxy M20. It offers an improvement over the M20 in every aspect. The new M21 offers a Super AMOLED display, a big 6000mAh battery, and a 48MP triple camera setup. With the specs bump, the Galaxy M21 has also seen its price hike as compared to the M20. Let’s learn more about the Samsung Galaxy M21 along with its price and availability in Nepal.

Samsung Galaxy M21 Overview

After the success that the all-new M-series had in 2019, we expected the company to come with the second edition very early into the new year, however, it hasn’t been the case. Rumors about the upcoming device had hit the internet as early as August last year but Samsung Galaxy M21 has been unveiled in India only in March. With the eventual lockdown, Samsung had to postpone its launch in Nepal. However, the Galaxy M21 is finally here.

Display and Design

The Galaxy M21 comes with a huge upgrade compared to M20 in terms of display technology. The latter came with a 6.3-inch Full HD+ LCD display. Its successor, however, has a Super AMOLED display of 6.4-inch diagonal length. The screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The device boasts screen to body ratio of 91% and a peak brightness of 420 nits. The auto-brightness feature on this device is powered by Samsung’s Virtual Light sensing technology which claims to get the job done using the front camera without the need for any ambient sensor.

As for design, M21 houses a triple camera setup at the back. The camera sensors are arranged inside the rectangular module with the LED flash. Other than that, the device looks similar to Galaxy M20 with the placements of the notch and rear-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Chipset and Hardware

The Samsung Galaxy M21 is powered by the Exynos 9611 chipset. The 10nm FinFET processor is paired with the Mali-G72 MP3 GPU. One can choose between 4/64GB and 6/128GB variants. RAM on both these variants is based on LPDDR4x technology. The internal storage can be expanded up to 512GB using the dedicated microSD card.

Camera

Compared to last year’s dual-camera setup, the Samsung Galaxy M21 has a triple camera setup. Samsung has not only added a camera sensor but has also bumped the primary lens to a 48MP sensor. It is accompanied by an 8MP ultra-wide sensor with 123-degree Field of View, and a 5MP depth sensor. To recall, M20 had a 13MP primary sensor accompanied by a 5MP ultra-wide-angle lens. On the front, M21 boasts a 20MP selfie camera which is an upgrade to last year’s 8MP camera.

Others

The other highlight of the device will be its 6,000mAh battery which comes with support for 15W fast charging technology. Recently launched M31 came with the same-sized battery size and fast charging support.

The device will ship with Samsung’s One UI 2.0 on top of Android 10. For security, there is a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and face unlock feature. It comes with an accelerometer, gyro sensor, geometric sensor, proximity sensor but misses out on ambient light sensor.
